This year has presented us all with some unprecedented challenges already; but in true Canadian fashion, we are healing our frostbite and keeping things as positive as possible. The bull pen is full of wooly-haired prospects that we have finally clipped and pictured. We have some very unique genetic profiles outside the main stream, while still being committed in our hands-free calving, high maternal objectives. We love that so many sellers and buyers have really embraced the online auction platform now, and we feel it is time to try another new concept… brace yourself… we will not be mailing out a book. We know the catalogue piles in everyone’s kitchen are always super tall…and they all end up in the trash eventually. So, if you consider we only have 17 lots, to mail out thousands of books for an online sale is a bit silly when all the data, pictures, and videos are posted at www.farmgatetimedauction.com, in real time. That being said; we will be offering hard copy books at the farm, with sales management and with our consultants should you still desire to have one when you are browsing the bulls. We also are offering our first proven herd bull. I only like to sell bulls that I believe in and would use myself. I have used many home-raised sons over the years and AJB Black Velvet 9F is a sire we have used extensively in our heifer pen with amazing success. Doesn’t get much more predictable than this!! We calved his first big group of daughters here this year and we are very happy with their maternal abilities. We have some stockpiled semen in the tank, but we have too much of him in the herd to let him loose in the pen anymore. Personally, I feel Velvet is still of the stature to work directly in the heifer pen for another year, as he is very fresh off his job in the fall program. We have purchased the majority of our own bulls and semen online now and as we grow the herd, leaving the farm has become increasingly difficult. We are incredibly dependant on sale management and consultants to keep us efficient. Driving across the country to view cattle that someone can tell you point blank isn’t worth the fuel…is incredibly valuable to me!!! These hard-honesty kind of working relationships are crucial as we move towards greater technological integration in this facet of the beef sector. We are now, more than ever, acutely aware of the need for a variety of highly skilled and critical consultants that help to get you into a bull that is the best for you. So, we have offered a bigger, more diverse list of representatives that we have trusted with our own purchasing and are we confident that you can too. All the bulls are available for viewing anytime now and we are excited to show the pen with great pride and anticipation. I purchased the MTV Forrest semen with hopes of getting some cool polled females off the lead cows, and instead got some very cool polled bulls. Oakmont has been the lead calf all year long, despite all the feed challenges that 2021 brought, he is still one of the lead calves in the pen. Outcross paternal genetics will allow for some diversity without sacrificing dependability of production: nothing but successful progeny is what this cow family does. Every bull calf off this cow has found its way into leading programs and every daughter has stayed here to do more of the same. Oakmont is another exciting polled herdsire prospect off a bankable dam with great structure and balance.

Stratton is a genetic full brother to Oakmont; and while there are some styling differences between the brothers, the genetics remain to be some of the most prolific. Darwin sired cattle are starting to surface across the country and really rise up, this son is no different, while he ended up coming horned, he has all the power and color I LOVE to see: red that saturates to black across his body. His mother is another prolific female that has put some of my favourite bulls into some amazing programs: Red Willow Ranch, Furze Farms, and Terry Dayholos got two sons. One of the most powerful traits that this cow shares with all her progeny consistently is this tremendous color and amazing length; and length translates into calving ease and then into pounds. As we head towards stronger calf price predictions: every extra pound at sale time will generate bigger margins. page 4

Farmboy is a powerful sire prospect. Wider based with more bone and muscling, but he still demonstrates the calving ease traits I desire with his smooth shoulder, extra length, and longer skull. I collected and used his sire for his performance, muscling and dark red color. His dam is an older female who has the udder of a 4 yr. old. The cow family is very easy keeping, high-producing and very bankable. Farmboy’s full sister is in production and you could easily take a pot load of these cows into any part of the country and do well… very middle of the road type of female, darkest of red, long and feminine, still that soggy depth of body with a dynamite udder. The strength of Farmboy is knowing he can hang muscle with the best of them AND his daughters will be sexy af.

Red Baldy Alert! The lead son out of our new Adair bull: purchased to add the Mappins Divine female bloodline into our herd, a bloodline that I’ve been coveting for years. The color, calving ease and vigour off Divine Tradition was awesome, and his length was another great feature that has added even more value. Prophecy was in all fall in hopes of hitting the show road with his mother. She is a big-bodied baldy Red Rock mother that has that explosive rib shape that is the red rock legacy. This herdsire has the extra hair, length, style and bone to really find his place in the world. That extra length and soft-styled make-up in such a dark red package just makes me giddy and excited for his future. Prophecy has always carried himself with the chill herdbull vibe of a bull who knows he’s gonna take care of business. page 8

At breeding time, we always need something dependable; Wally is my dependable; I have used him successfully in the heifer pen for a couple years now and his daughters are also calving and milking well. He spent the winter with the fall cows and looks very fresh. He is a vigourous breeder, and spends his time bawling at the gate as cows begin to cycle in the winter pens now. I have semen in the tank off him and he is still of the stature to go right into the heifer pen this spring. He calves very well with a TON of vigour and typically if they are red, they are dark red. His mother is one of my most special cows; she has magic milk, and has one of the lead females on the ground this year.
