hen I started at the Colorado Daily 1 million years ago, my colleagues and I coined an immense catalogue of ridiculous songs, phrases and jingles about our daily newsroom duties to liven our loads. (That’s what your mom said.)

Ah, back in the day, when journalists had time to lollygag.

Now, Jesus, 15 years later, the ex-crew still exchanges tropes and old journalism-related inside jokes, because we’re cool.

I have a point, chill Fantz out. The Colorado Daily has long included a “Body & Soul” weekly section in which our dear readers can learn about things that nourish the body and soul. In a similar tune to Kit Kat’s “Gimme a Break,” one of the old gang’s favorite songs sang like this (although feel free to adapt your own style, as when that jingle rang wild, you were a mere twinkle in your mom’s uterus): “Body & Soul, Body & Soul, no one gives a fuck about the Body & Soul.”

I’ve been singing it for

weeks since I was enlisted to write this column for you fine Buffs. Honestly, the fact of the matter is, I would prefer to not give a fuck about the body and soul. I would rather deepthroat boxed wine spigots for days, smoke packs of cigarettes (they do exist), load up a big bong bowl and sit on my couch licking my Doritos-covered digits.

Alas, I fear that age has taken a hold of my damn body (and my soul). So if I have any advice for you, Generation — hold please … Gen Z, Google tells me — Zers, it’s that you really should give a fuck about the body and soul. Your creaky body and pent-up anxiety will thank you later in life.

And now, since I wasted

most of this column talking about my feelings, I’ll bullet some pointers on how to keep your bodies and souls in check as you come back to Boulder.

Keep experimenting

By pathways of responsibility and safety, feel free to charter the unknown waters — from drugs to booze to sex to anal beads. You’re an adult now. You may not be able to legally consume all of the things, but college is about shaking out the high school, washing off the curfew and putting things up your butt to see if you’re into that kind of shit. Just remember to get consent if you’re involving other parties, or we will take you down. And it will not be pretty.

It seems an easy task out here in Boulder County, one of the most zen-filled gorgeous places on earth, and it usually is. But since the leader of the free world is a grumpy toddler in grandpa jeans, divisiveness has weaseled its way into our lifestyles.

Look outside. It’s Mother Nature’s adventure land.

Get out, go on hikes, climb a mountain, get a ski pass, or just smoke weed on a grassy knoll and talk to the Flatirons.

Be sure to get daily doses of that fresh mountain air before California and Texas transplants jam it up with pollution from “vintage” (see: rubbish) RVs and oversized pickup trucks. The wealth of communities, resources and outdoor activities is almost overwhelming, so keep an eye out for clubs

That’s not only the Boy Scout motto; it’s practical advice for people thinking about climbing a Colorado fourteener, according to Tom Holmquist, a sales person at Boulder’s Neptune Mountaineering.

“It’s more than just a hike,” he said.

Whether you consider the act of summiting a 14,000-foot peak is “climbing” or even “mountaineering” as opposed to “hiking,” whatever you call it doesn’t make completing a highaltitude trek any easier.

Proper preparation is an absolute requirement if you want to safely make it up one of the state’s 54 peaks taller than 14,000 feet.

If you do, your breath will be taken away, both by the view and the lack of oxygen at altitude.

Holmquist said preparation should include having the proper footwear and clothing and proper layering of that clothing, with a rain jacket and rain pants.

Avoid wearing cotton, he said, which doesn’t evaporate water properly.

Climbers should make sure they have plenty of water and some food.

“Know your route,” Holmquist advised, and “make sure you get an early start,” especially because of the rainy or otherwise adverse weather that typically moves into and across the mountains in the early afternoon.

“You don’t want to get stuck in a storm,” he said.

Don’t expect cellphone coverage, especially at the

peak. And remember that “summiting is only half the battle because you will need to get down safely,” Holmquist said.

Study trail maps and pack a compass and plenty of water along with perhaps a celebratory summit beverage.

Physical training to strengthen your core, back and legs — remember, you’ll be carrying a pack with a large amount of water — is recommended for two to three months before attempting a 14er for inexperienced climbers.

You may want to add a jog or some lengthy walks into your training regimen to ensure your cardiovascular system can handle propelling you to the top. Since oxygen is scarce at 14,000 feet, your lungs need to be in shape enough to deal with shallow, low-volume breaths.

Take a few snacks to give you an extra boost of energy during a short break alongside the trail, or even to eat while walking slowly, considering you will definitely need the sustenance. Just don’t stop right in the middle of the trail for a breather in the way of everyone else.

Expect some snow and

cold, even in the dead of summer. Gloves and an insulated jacket may be required toward the top, whether or not the sun is shining.

Not all high-altitude journeys are equal, so be sure to check the difficulty of summiting each 14,000foot peak before trying.

Longs Peak, for instance, while attractive as the only fourteener in Rocky Mountain National Park and its looming outline visible from Boulder County, is one of the more difficult climbs, requiring some basic scrambling in places.

Holmquist said one of the easier fourteener peaks for beginners is Mt. Bierstadt near Georgetown, just an hour and a half drive from Boulder, known for being one of the best peaks for first-timers.

Another, he said, is Quandary Peak near Breckenridge. Others are Grays Peak and Torreys Peak near Idaho Springs.

No matter where you go and however you choose to celebrate at the top, just make sure to keep it clean — no can left behind.

high and pack out all your trash.

Height: 14,060 feet Difficulty: Easy Elevation gain: 2,850 feet Length of route: 7 miles Known for: A hike for fourteener virgins Mt. Bierstadt is about a 90-minute drive from Boulder, up the winding Guanella Pass that starts in Georgetown.

Mt. Democrat, Lincoln, Bross, Cameron

f you want to get in shape to take part in Boulder’s high-octane fitness scene or are just looking for something more active than slinging a Frisbee around campus, check out CU’s many recreational facilities and programs.

There’s everything from club and intramural teams to free-to-student recreation centers with fitness equipment, pools and a climbing gym.

Annie Mulvany, assistant director of marketing and external relations for CU Boulder’s Recreation Services, says the benefits of getting physically active extend beyond simple fitness.

“Wondering how to make the most of the next four years?” Mulvany asked. “Studies have conclusively proven that physical activity, in any form, helps to relieve stress and improve cognitive function,” she said in an email.

Mulvany urged students to check out the Recreation Services website — colorado.edu/recreation — and follow it on social media.

“We want to help you ‘Find Your Fit,’ feel good in your body, have fun and get the most out of your unique college experience,” she said.

The University of Colorado has two indoor student recreation centers, one at 1835 Pleasant St. on the main CU campus and the second on the Williams Village campus area at 3300 Baseline Road, as well as three artificial turf fields, four natural grass fields, four outdoor basketball courts, three tennis courts, and a challenge ropes course at various locations throughout the Boulder campus.

Full-fee-paying undergraduate students automatically have access to both centers, Mulvany said. Students can drop in any time they’re open.

has more than 30,000 square feet of space, with badminton, basketball, volleyball, racquetball, squash and tennis courts. That includes six multipurpose wood courts as well as an indoor turf gym. CU also has lighted outdoor basketball courts on Regent Drive behind the CU Events Center.

CU Recreation Services staff said The Rec has the only ice rink in Boulder, a facility that offers options from broomball and hockey to group skate parties. There are four pools at The Rec, as well as an indoor climbing gym that offers both bouldering and rope climbing for all ability levels.

The Williams Village Recreation Center offers fitness services that are especially convenient for students living at Williams Village/Bear Creek Apartments.

Its first floor includes a 3,300-square-foot weight room complete with Cybex strength and fitness equipment, Olympic-style weight benches, dumbbells, two treadmills, and nine Precor ellipticals with individual TVs as well as two 50-inch TVs in the weight room.

The second floor has a multipurpose studio for group fitness classes.

Cardiovascular equipment is available for drop-in recreation when classes are not scheduled.

One of the benefits of using the recreation centers, Mulvany said, is that students can “de-stress by staying active. While we can’t avoid stress, we can alleviate it before it wreaks havoc on our minds and bodies.”

The Recreation Services facilities and programs also offer a chance to make new friends, connect with other students and participate in healthy competition, Mulvany said.

“College is a time of exploration, triumph, learning, and fun, but we know that it is not without its challenges and pitfalls,” she said. “This is why we are committed to providing opportunities to help you find your center, foster positive body image, build healthy habits, and do what makes you feel physically, mentally, and emotionally well.”

hether you’re a college swimmer excited about the upcoming season at CU, a recreational climber ready to enjoy the beautiful fall season in the Flatirons, or a competitive masters runner training for a top time in the Bolder Boulder, Alta Physical Therapy and Pilates can provide an individualized program to help optimize performance and keep you going strong this fall. Owner Jane Millif encourages athletes to come in and develop an individualized program before injuries arise. “It’s a lot easier to prevent a problem than to fix a problem,” she says.

At Alta, physical therapy isn’t just for injured athletes. Alta offers an Athletic Performance Enhancement program that can help athletes get faster, stronger, and better on the track, in the pool, on the slopes, or on the wrestling mat. Eleven physical therapists and two physical therapy assistants are on staff, including

several whose experience as athletes enhances their professional expertise.

Alta’s practitioners take the time and effort to carefully evaluate the dynamics of the whole body as a system. One example: many climbers and swimmers experience shoulder problems, but don’t realize that an unstable shoulder can be related to a weak pelvic floor. Alta practitioners can look at an athlete’s whole-body dynamics in a free individual 45-minute selective functional movement assessment.

Alta Physical Therapy and Pilates offers a wide range of services to help you optimize your performance and stay pain-free. For runners, Alta offers video gait analysis. They also have an anti-gravity treadmill that allows partial weightbearing. While it’s useful for recovery after injury or surgery, the anti-gravity treadmill is another great evaluation tool. If the runner’s gait changes when they run unweighted, this can be a sign of weaknesses that don’t allow

them to hold the correct position.

For swimmers, Alta offers swim stroke analysis to address biomechanical errors. Allyson Friday is a swimming specialist who travels to the environment where her clients train in order to more effectively analyze stroke technique in the context of water conditions.

Using videotape, Allyson can evaluate functional movement patterns, motion limitations, and muscle imbalances, and prescribe swim workouts that will improve your technique and performance and help prevent injury.

In addition to individual assessments, Alta regularly schedules group workshops and clinics.

Within the next month, a shoulder clinic and swimming clinic will be added to the schedule.

Workshops for climbers often include small-group assessments that allow participants to identify weaknesses in themselves and others, and then learn how to prevent injury and provide healing.

ith dazzling costumes, cabaretstyle performances and fundraising for a good cause, this year’s 7th annual Condom Couture Cabaret performance promises to entertain while raising money for Boulder Valley Women’s Health Center. The event will take place at 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 21 at the Boulder Jewish Community Center. Tickets are available on the Boulder Valley Women’s Health Center website, with two options: $75 for a general admission ticket or $750 for a sponsor table at the front of the venue for parties of six.

In previous years, the show was formatted as a themed fashion show with a costume runway. This year’s show features a

Condom Couture Cabaret with a small cast of six performers draped in costumes made entirely out of condoms in a variety of colors. The costumes were designed by local designers and artists each year, and the condoms were donated by ONE Condoms.

“We will have drag queens, and burlesque performers, comedians, singers and a stilt walker,” said Communications Director at Boulder Valley Women’s Health Center Lisa Radelete. “It is a fun and creative way to raise awareness about sexual health while also raising funds for our mission.”

What is proper trail etiquette? An expert lays out the do’s and don’ts of hiking From deciding which hiker has the right of way to feeding animals, these are the rules to follow.

E

very trail has rules, and often there are signs not just at the trailhead but also along the trail to remind hikers of what to do and what not to do to respect the environment.

However, some of the guidelines for hiking seem to get overlooked time and time again, either out of lack of knowledge or intentionally.

Fletcher Jacobs, State Trail Programs Manager for Colorado Parks and Wildlife, answered a few questions about trail etiquette based on the most commonly violated rules.

Q: Why is it important to stay on the trail?

“As land management agencies, we create these trails to manage where folks go,” Jacobs said.

“Every time you decide to cut off the trail, you are potentially trampling vegetation, causing disturbance of habitat or causing erosion.”

He noted that people might step around or off the trail for all kinds of reasons — muddy conditions, ice or snow on the trail, the call of Mother Nature, to take a shortcut — but if everyone does it repeatedly, it can alter the intended trail.

“Say the trail was created

to be two to three feet wide, and that decision was made because of the landscape itself. If enough people start making their own trails, then it might become a six-foot trail and lead to greater erosion.”

That erosion of the trail can end up in the local water system and impact wildlife.

Q: What’s the big deal if someone relieves themselves right off the trail?

“Mother Nature will call no matter where we are,” he said. “The best course of action is to use any available facilities at the trailhead, as these were created to have impact in one place.”

“It’s tricky, because you’re trying to keep on the trail,” he said. “Be sensitive and thoughtful about stepping off the trail at any point.”

He suggests finding a rock type of surface or pine needles, not tundra or vegetation areas. “If you gotta go, you gotta go, but minimize impact,” Jacobs said.

Q: What’s the harm in feeding the wildlife?

“Folks love to get outside and see the wildlife,

whether they live here or are visiting here,” Jacobs said. “But in no circumstance should you get so close you could touch or feed wildlife.

Not only can this harm animals, it can also lead to behavior changes and cause danger to future visitors. These are wild animals, and we cannot predict their behavior, so it’s a safety issue.”

This includes not leaving remnants of food — such as orange peels or sunflower seed shells — as you snack on the trail.

“When you are in the wild, it’s really thinking about having all of your food sources under control,” he said. “You have to think about how can you minimize and store food properly and not tempt wild animals.”

Jacobs pointed out the seven principles of the Leave No Trace philosophy, which are: plan ahead and prepare; travel and camp on durable surfaces; dispose of waste properly; leave what you find; minimize campfire impacts; respect wildlife; and be considerate of other visitors.

Q: If a dog is friendly, why does it have to be on a leash?

“I always tell people, ‘You might have the friendliest dog in the world, but that doesn’t mean everybody else loves your dog,’ ” he said. “It’s just a courtesy for our friends who are not dog lovers to keep your dog on a leash. Also, dogs are animals that can get out and get excited by their surroundings, so they have that impact on the land and plants when they go off-trail. I’ve seen situations

where the dog goes right up to a wild animal, and it can end very badly for the dog, especially if it’s a moose or a bear.”

Every trail, wilderness area, park or open space has its own rules about whether or not dogs can be there, enter a waterway, be off-leash or on, so check the regulations ahead of time, Jacobs said.

Q: Isn’t a biodegradable bag of dog waste going to erode anyway, so it’s OK to leave it on the trail?

As one open space agency reminded hikers in a campaign, “There’s no poop fairy.”

When it comes to dog waste, even in a compostable or biodegradable bag, it’s trash that needs to be packed out just like an energy bar wrapper or tin can.

“Dog waste does not belong there,” Jacobs said of open space and wilderness areas. “Also, dog poop can be disruptive to native fauna. Dogs are not native wildlife here, and wild animals rely on scent.

its own scent.”

Q: Who has the right of way: hikers going uphill or downhill?

“Hikers going uphill have the right of way,” he said.

Perhaps more important, though, is to have good communication with fellow hikers. “Always stay on the trail, communicate by asking if you can pass, saying hi, ask how they are doing,” Jacobs said.

Q: What is one thing you want hikers to know?

“People think a few deer ran back and forth and now there is a trail,” he said with a laugh. “It takes a lot of work to build a trail. A lot of resources go into building a trail, to designing a trail, to keep impact to wildlife to a minimum, and make it a fun experience for hikers, mountain bikers and equestrians.”

He adds that many, many volunteers are involved in not only building trails but also maintaining them over the years. “There are always opportunities for volunteers to help out,” he said.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — A nearly toothless South Florida woman says she bit a man who

forced his way into her apartment.

Alice Coleman tells WSVN she woke up early Monday morning to a fire alarm going off. The 61year-old says that when opened the door, a man pushed his way inside.

She says he kept calling her “mama” and telling her everything would be OK. Coleman says

that “with the little teeth I got, I bit him.”

Coleman says she ran out of the apartment and he locked himself inside. She called police from a neighbor’s house.

Coleman says she’ll be more careful about opening her door now, adding she will open it with her Taser.

How to keep your dog safe when hiking on hot days

aybe no one is more excited to get outside on a summer day than your sweet pooch. However, dogs can overheat just like humans, so it’s important

to know how to keep them cool when you’re out for a hike.

Michelle Marotti, education and outreach specialist for Boulder County Parks and Open Space, provides some insight on summer trail safety for canines.

“It’s best to avoid hiking during the hottest times of day.”

Marotti, who owns a Great Pyrenees Australian mix, explained that cooling off in the heat is especially difficult for dogs. “Any dog can get brain damage or heat stroke if it’s too hot,” she said. “Certain dog breeds are more susceptible to heat stroke.”

Some simple strategies for hiking safely with your dog when the temperature soars, Marotti said, include planning ahead to be out during the cooler times of day and taking shorter hikes. Also, choose a shady hike and bring plenty of water.

“It can be very dangerous to hike with your dog in the heat,” said Rayna Healy, director of Active Dog, a company that takes dogs hiking while you’re busy at work.

“They don’t sweat in the

same way that we do, so it is not as easy for them to keep cool.”

If you are concerned that your dog is too hot, look for signs such as excessive panting, ropey drooling, and lethargy, Marotti said.

To reduce discomfort or illness from the heat, Marotti suggests bringing a bandana and plenty of water (pack water for you and your dog, not just to share), then wet the bandana and rub the cool cloth on the dog’s belly, armpits and paws. Her dog wears booties in summer (and winter) on the trails so as not to get blisters from hiking on rocks and other hot surfaces. Bring a portable bowl for your dog’s water, rather than pour it in your hands or directly into their mouth.

Camping and Hiking 101 The experts at Neptune Mountaineering have you covered.

oulderites are blessed with a big backyard. Boulder’s Opens Space and Mountain Parks Department manages more than 155 miles of trails to host your hikes. Plus, there are dozens of great places to camp in the county.

Whether you’re new to hiking and camping, or you’ve conquered a good deal of 14ers and love backpacking, the experts at Neptune Mountaineering, 633 S. Broadway in Boulder — an iconic outdoor retailer in Boulder — have you covered. Here, they’ll give you the lay of the land of camping and hiking in and around Boulder.

Must-have gear for hiking in Boulder

The weather can change very quickly in Colorado, so make sure you have the ability to add (and shed) layers, says Barry Robertson, with Neptune Mountaineering. A daypack or fanny pack to carry a rain jacket and other essentials is key.

“When hiking at our high elevation you’ll want to stay hydrated, so the No. 1 must-have piece of gear is a water bottle or hydration bladder,” he says.

insulated bottle to have cool water in summer and water which doesn’t freeze in winter. If you use a hydration bladder, get some HydraPak Bottle Bright tablets and your bladder will be clean without tasting like cleaners.

If you are hiking in the afternoon or evening in the shoulder seasons, always stash a fully charged headlamp in your pack.

“It’s really easy to be out on the trail longer than you anticipate and have darkness descend before you can,” he says.

Of course a good fitting pair of hiking shoes or boots with a sole that will grip particularly when descending on rocky steps is essential. In winter, Robertson suggests adding a set of Kahtoola microspikes. Plenty of trails have north or east-facing sections where ice forms and stays for long periods, he explains.

Gear new campers need

A good packable insulated jacket is a really good place to start because nights and mornings at altitude are often a lot colder than first-time campers assume, Robertson says.

An insulated jacket will provide plenty of use in Colorado even if you don’t become a regular camper or backpacker.

You’ll also want a comfortable sleeping pad, a sleeping bag that is warm enough for the altitude you’ll be camping at and a quality tent that is actually

Pro tip: Pack a headlamp rather than a flashlight because having your hands free to set up the tent or to prepare your meals is invaluable,

TIPS FOR ROOKIE CAMPERS WHO ARE NEW TO COLORADO Don’t attract bears!

“Be sure that you have some way to stow your food so that bears can’t get

to it,” says Pam Ranger Roberts with Neptune.

“Not all campgrounds have bear-proof storage, so call ahead to ask. If they don’t, bring a bear vault or bear canister.”

If you’re backpacking, you’ll want to bring gear to

hang food from a tree. An Ursa-sac is great along with a sturdy, adequate length cord, Ranger Roberts says.

Eldora Ski Resort 101

E

ldora is a gem of a ski area right in Boulder’s backyard.

In fact, it’s part of Colorado Ski Country USA’s Gems program, a collection of the state’s smaller ski areas that shine in some very special ways. You can get a CSCUSA Gems card for just $30, which includes two-for-one lift tickets at 11 smaller areas, including Eldora, all ski season long.

But that’s just one way to access Boulder’s closest and most affordable ski area. This year, Eldora is on the popular Ikon pass, which means locals get unlimited skiing at Eldora in addition to larger ski areas around the state when they purchase the multi-resort season pass.

If all you need is Eldora, there are also stellar ski pass discounts for students.

Right now, Eldora season passes are $259 for kids (5-12), $369 for teens (13-17), and $349 for college students (under 26).

Getting there: drive or ride

Eldora is a beautiful 21-mile drive up the canyon from Boulder with free close-in right next to a six-person high-speed lift. But those who prefer to leave the driving to others can try the Ski-n-Ride. During ski season, RTD’s Route N bus runs daily from 14th and Walnut streets. And it’s just $5.25 for adults (including up to three kids under 5 free) and $1.60 for youths age 6-19. Better yet,

If doesn’t matter how you get to Eldora: the real rewards are carved in powder. The ski area may be petite — just 680 acres and 10 lifts — but it’s got a little bit of everything for beginner up to expert skiers.

From mellow, rolling

groomers to steep tree runs to eight professional terrain parks to miles of Nordic trails, there’s always new terrain to tackle or places to practice.

Snow programs and perks

For those who want to sharpen their skiing skills,

Eldora offers ski rentals and single-day lessons, weekly programs for rippers as young as 4, freestyle park programs, three-day skills camps for kids 7 to 14 years, women’s-specific groups, and more.

As for snow, even if nature doesn’t bless Colorado with a winter like last year, Eldora’s got it covered. Part of multi-year, multi-milliondollar upgrades, Eldora’s snowmaking system is second-to-none for the size of the resort.

Boulder’s backyard winter playground can cover 100 percent of its groomed terrain in pow. Now who’s ready to ski?
