Pitch a tent

Camp like a champ By John Bear Staff Writer he University of Colorado has a habit of attracting students who came here for the outdoor activities and possibly to study whenever they have extra time. The mountains to the west of Boulder have plenty of camping opportunities for the outdoor enthusiast, and many of them are modern enough for the person who wants to camp but not in a “I-hate-humanity-and-must-escape-tothe-woods” kind of way. If you are feeling like you must escape the world and retreat to the deep forest, you probably aren’t reading this anyway. For the rest of you, here are some ideas:

T

Leave society in the dust ... or at least about 2 hours behind you

National Park Directions: Head up Boulder Canyon Drive to Nederland, then north on Colo. 7. The campgrounds are 10 miles south of Estes Park. Reservations: No More info: nps.gov/romo/ planyourvisit/camping.htm The campground has 26 spots and is tent-only. It’s a pretty high elevation at 9,500 feet, so lowlanders should take it easy to avoid altitude sickness or give yourself time to acclimate to your new home before rushing up into the mountains. It closes in late fall.

Its first floor includes a 3,300-square-foot weight room complete with Cybex strength and gym fitness equipment, Olympic-style weight benches, dumbbells, two treadmills, and nine Precor ellipticals with individual TVs as well as two 50-inch TVs in the weight room. The second floor has a multipurpose studio for group fitness classes. Cardiovascular equipment is available for drop-in recreation when classes are not scheduled. One of the benefits of using the recreation centers, Mulvany said, is that students can “de-stress by staying active. 15 billion dogs in Colorado at the moment, so making sure everyone gets along is more important than ever. It’s not difficult to be a good dog owner (or guardian, which is the preferred term ’round these parts). It really comes down to following a few simple rules to keep it all from going to shit. Literally. Which leads us to the first rule of Fido Club ...

Pick. Shit. Up.

It’s really that simple: If you’re dog drops a deuce anywhere that isn’t a litterbox or a toilet, bag those turds. Then carry the bag to an approved garbage receptacle. Deposit the crap. Walk away, safe in the knowledge that you have done the right thing and will be rewarded in an afterlife of your choosing.

Dogs from page 15 get Porkchop under control. Yes, most dogs are lovable balls of lick-y goodness. But not all. Just like the people who care for them, some have come from adverse circumstances. It’s not cool (or safe) to let them run up to humans or beasts willy-nilly. That goes for off-leash trails, too. Boulder leads the pack when it comes to its offleash open space tag system, but — and this is important — your pooch needs to go (or not go) where you tell it when you tell it. One place your dog should definitely not spend time: A parked car. They can and do die from the heat, and the fuzz (not the cute kind: cops) can and do issue tickets for hot dogs (police-speak for canine in a car). More than that, Colorado has a Good Samaritan Law that allows passersby to bust your windows and remove Rover.

Make it official Even if Sir Licks-A-Lot stays cosseted in the confines of your casa, she’s going to need a license. You have 30 days after you move to Boulder/purchase your pooch to get tags, which need to be worn at all times. A license requires a rabies vaccination and costs $15 per year for a fixed beastie; $30 for an au naturel stud or studette (although I’d recommend following the Good Word of Bob Barker and getting those bits snipped). Learn more about licenses here: bit.ly/dog-licensing. While you’re at it, why not go for that open space tag we talked about earlier? Those cost $13 for Boulder residents, $33 if you live outside city limits and $75 if you’re not from here at all. Deets: bouldercolorado.gov/ osmp/voice-and-sight.

If you don’t have the time, space or resources to take care of your own dog, you can still load up on canine cuteness from the therapy dogs that regularly visit campus to help students fight the stress of finals week. Jeremy Papasso / Staff Photographer

General tomfoolery If you are on the fence about your readiness to have your own little bundle of floof, consider these few things: Are you regularly away from home longer than eight hours at a time? Do you enjoy walking for extended periods in all sorts of crazy weather? Have you kept the same plant alive for more than five years? Will you have extra cash for veterinary care and unexpected illnesses or injuries?

If you are, don’t, haven’t and HELL NO (respectively), a dog probably isn’t for you. They are living creatures. They need things. Lots of things. Things that require much time, energy and money. When I first rescued my sweet angel, it was pre-recession; I was flush with cash. She got the fanciest food, took monthly trips to the groomer and went to the vet for every sniffle. Now, in leaner times, she gets a bath

once a year and it’s stretch to scrape together the coin to get a doc to look at a suspicious lump. (It turned out to be benign fatty cyst, thankfully.) The point is, your relationship with your dog will (hopefully) be the longest of your young lives. (Twice as long as a first marriage, on average.) Consider it carefully. Cliff Grassmick / Staff Photographer Denise Hackett takes her daughter Maggie’s bike off their SUV during move-in last August on the University of Colorado campus. Nice set of wheels, Maggie.

Biking from page 6 a responsible, sober friend bring it home. Trust us, you don’t want to be the guy or gal in the cell who got pulled over for drunk biking. You’ll never live that one down.

No excuses With 300 miles of dedicated bikeways, 80 underpasses and 38 B-cycle stations, there’s really no reason not to bike in Boulder. Rain? Put on a jacket. Snow? Sometimes the plows hit the paths before

the streets. Wind? OK, you got me. I hate biking in the wind. The city recently created a new way to get your bicycling bliss: dockless bike shares. That means free-floating cycles will soon be popping up all over town. Take it from a (near) daily cycling commuter: Biking is more fun and often faster than sitting in traffic. Parking is never a problem, and people are generally impressed when you turn up on two wheels. Shay Castle: twitter.com/shayshinecastle

Jeremy Papasso / Staff Photographer Amanda Romano rides down Broadway in puffy jacket and yellow pants, the perfect ensemble of coldweather gear and bright, don’t-hit-me colors for a winter ride.

Get your fix Your bike is like your body: If you don’t take care of it, everything will go to shit, and then nobody is going to want to ride it. Here’s some advice from a veteran bike mechanic on how to keep everything rolling smoothly Check your tire pressure and lube your chain once a week if you’re a casual rider or commuter. For performance rides (road cycling or mountain biking) you’re going to want to re-inflate your tires and lube/clean your chain after every ride. A tip on chains: If it sounds like a flock of seagulls is following you when you ride, that means you need lube pronto. Replace chains every 1,000 to 1,500 miles. More often if you don’t regularly clean and lube it, because it will wear out faster without proper care. (See Tip Numero Uno.) Get an annual tune-up so a professional can look over things like brakes, wheel alignment, pedal wear and all that other shit you don’t know how to do but is essential to keeping you safe. Don’t be cheap when it comes to your bike. Like anything else, it costs money to maintain. so if you leave it out in the rain, sleet and snow, don’t yell at the nice mechanic who tells you it will cost hundreds to replace or repair those rusty parts. Sure, they’re trying to sell you stuff, but they also don’t want you to end up in the hospital with a cracked skull and a nice, shiny new lawsuit to file. There are more than a dozen shops where you can get a tune-up or quick flat fix, but if you’re going to spend lots of time on your bike, it might be worth knowing how to do some of these things yourself. Luckily, there are also plenty of places to get your knowledge on. Community Cycles holds free fix-a-flat clinics on weekends (communitycycles.org/what-we-do/bike-repair-workshops/); REI does gratis classes, too, though less frequently (rei.com/event/ bike-maintenance-basics-level-1/boulder/208562). Or stay on campus: CU does one-hour classes followed by 60 minutes of shop time to test our your newly learned skills: colorado.edu/ecenter/transportation/bicycle/bike-maintenanceclinics If money is no object, Full Cycle (1795 Pearl) offers a six-part class for $350 that will teach you everything you want to know. Or book a one-on-one with a mechanic for $60/hr. Deets: fullcyclebikes.com/ about/maintenance-class-series-pg85.htm

The Perfect Ride By Adam Goldstein

he crew at Republic Cycles is dedicated to making sure you find your perfect ride. How dedicated? Since opening its doors in 2016,

the shop owned by industry veterans Eric Larimer and Steve Bell has carved out a unique niche in the Boulder market with its one-on-one customer service, its extensive selection of rental cycles and its impressive fleet of demo bikes.

20 • AUGUST 27, 2018 • WELCOME BACK

These resources are designed to ensure that every customer finds the ideal set of wheels for their own unique needs. Sure, that includes catering to the hard-core cyclists who are intent on braving the region’s most daunting and untamed trails. But it also means providing full service for those looking to navigate around the city on two wheels. CU students reporting to classes in the fall, for example, will find plenty of options for wheeling around the campus and its environs at Republic Cycles. As Larimer explained to the Colorado Daily earlier this year, the shop has made expanding its fleet of rental, demo and sales vehicles a priority for 2018, and that means more choices for every

kind of customer. Indeed, Republic carries a wealth of the latest Trek mountain and road bike models. The shop’s commitment to a smooth ride goes beyond the initial sale. Republic’s in-house repair shop features technicians versed in their craft. Republic specialists are certified in Trek, Bosch, SRAM, and Shimano brands, and they regularly attend classes and seminars to ensure they’re at the top of their game. This brand of signature service has spurred many riders to offer a similar compliment to Larimer and his crew: “Thank you, you saved my ride!” Republic Cycles, 2626 Baseline Road, Boulder, republiccyclesboulder.com.

Elevation from page 20 or some lengthy walks into your training regimen to ensure your cardiovascular system can handle propelling you to the top. Since oxygen is scarce at 14,000 feet, your lungs need to be in shape enough to deal with shallow, low-volume breaths. Ensure you have a few snacks and water to give you an extra boost of energy during a short break alongside the trail, or even to eat while walking slowly, considering you will definitely need the sustenance. Just don’t stop right in the middle of the trail for a breather in the way of everyone else. Expect some snow and cold, even in the dead of summer. Gloves and an insulated jacket may be required toward the top, whether or not the sun is shining. Check the difficulty of summiting each 14,000-foot peak before trying, because not all high-altitude journeys are equal.

Kick Off the Year With A Healthy Foundation By Wendy McMillan

A

s summer reaches its close, it’s time to hit the books with renewed focus and energy. Whether adjusting to dorm life or refreshing living space, it’s worth putting some extra time into choosing a key essential: your mattress. “Getting a good night’s sleep, and the right amount of sleep, enables you to learn and retain what you’ve learned better,” says Dick Sumerfield, owner of Verlo Mattress in Boulder. “While you’re sleeping, you don’t want to be breathing noxious off-gasses that often come from those bed-in-a-box mattresses.” Sumerfield and his wife

visited Boulder over thirty years ago and fell in love: the healthy varieties of food, sunshine and natural beauty of the Flatirons and surrounds propelled the couple’s move from Chicago. Once here, they found a fit mirroring the area’s health-conscious through their business. “Our desire for healthy things carries over to the materials that we source and for the mattresses that we

make,” Sumerfield says. “All of our foam is certified pure in order to provide the healthiest sleep environment possible.” At Verlo Mattress, Sumerfield and his team take pride in maintaining control of the entire process, from acquiring raw materials to making and selling top products and finally delivering them to customers’ homes. Each Verlo mattress is made in local factories and sold exclusively in showrooms. All are adjustable, made to address individual sleep needs. What’s more, each mattress is backed with an industry-leading Lifetime Comfort Guarantee. Between study, sport, and just getting out and adventuring,

sometimes sleep may fall by the wayside. Yet good sleep becomes all the more important the more we want out of life, vital for immune function, tissue repair, brain function and more. Whether you’re managing a solid eight hours a night or squeezing in power naps, your mattress can make all the difference in reaching your potential. Bonus, Verlo Mattress of Boulder is here to help. “You can buy our mattress direct from our factory, save money, and we will deliver it and set it up for you in your room,” Sumerfield says. Go Pro with Mike’s Camera

T

he best photographers learn by doing. So here’s a hot tip as you head back to class: If you’re studying photography or just want to learn and grow as a shutterbug, the absolute best resource in Boulder is not on campus (no offense, CU). It’s Mike’s Camera, at 2500 Pearl Street. Mike’s is a Boulder institution, renowned for its enormous selection of photo and video cameras, drones and other picture-taking accessories, as well as a full line of film and photo processing services, including the latest in digital cameras and digital camera printing kiosks. The word on the street is they can print just about everything on just about anything – as tiny or as big as your imagination.

The best photographers learn by doing. Mike’s Camera is your resource. Mike’s Camera has you covered and then some, gearwise (we’ll come back to this). And if that’s not enough, they’ll price match if necessary so you know you’re always getting the best deal possible. But their secret weapon is the depth of knowledge that each of their staff members bring to the job. Every customer service staff member at Mike’s MUST qualify as a Certified Photographic Consultant (CPC) and keep that status! The training is intense but the reward is oh so good for both the employee and the customer. No guesswork. Just solid craft and industry know-how.

MIKE’S CAMERA SCHOOL: PHOTO – VIDEO – MEDIA That superior knowledge extends from the service counter to the field. Mike’s Camera offers a variety of educational programs led by its own certified photo and video consultants, expert manufacturer technical reps, and nationally acclaimed pros. Mike’s School does one-on-one consultations, fundamentals classes, field leader talks, field trips, lunch & learns, in-depth seminars, multi-part photo excursion workshops, Adobe suite software instruction, and more. Current classes include an astrophotography workshop, birds of prey workshop, photo management for Apple devices, Photography 101 (intro) and 201 (advanced), and a drone workshop! If you’re too busy with school to go afield for a workshop, hop online to mikescamera.blog for some awesome posts that will help make you a better photographer. RENTALS Interdisciplinary Media Art Practices (IMAP) students working on specialized projects might need some very specific equipment that isn’t available at school. For them, Mike’s rental program is a godsend. Most types of photo gear, from consumer point-andshoot cameras to high-end professional cameras and lenses, is available to rent at Mike’s Camera. The cool thing is a portion of the rental fee can

be applied to a future purchase if you buy a similar product. REPAIRS Equipment breaks, you drop a lens… hey, stuff happens. Get your injured gear to Mike’s repair shop. Their techs can fix most equipment, old or new. We’re talking point-and-shoots, camcorders, film SLRs and digital SLR cameras, and more. As long as parts are available for your model, Mike’s can help. Mike’s even cleans digital camera sensors. Why would you need that? Well, as Mike’s explains on its website, the sensor can over time build up a film of oil and grime that can reduce the sharpness and color saturation of your images. Even if you don’t see dust on the sensor, it’s a great practice to have it checked and cleaned every year. Mike’s Camera performs quality in-house digital sensor cleanings on digital SLRs and digital pointand-shoot cameras. Think of Mike’s Camera as your partner in pursuit of that once-in-a-lifetime photograph. Whether you’re just here for the school year or here to stay, you have unlimited natural beauty to practice on, so get out there, learn, grow, and make some wonderful images to enjoy for a lifetime. Mike’s Camera is right here when you need them. Mike’s Camera, 2500 Pearl St., Boulder; 303.443.1715; mikescamera.com

Boulder thrift stores

Sustainable shopping, for your wallet and the environment By Madeline St. Amour Staff Writer

Boulder has to offer.

re you tired of throwing money at fast fashion stores that import from sweatshops and hurt the environment? Thrift shopping is a sustainable alternative for updating your wardrobe that won’t break the bank or child labor laws. Lucky for you, Boulder is full of thrift stores brimming with brand-name pieces worn once before being tossed in the donation pile, as well as gently used outdoors goods waiting for their next mountain adventure. Thrift stores also have their fair share of sales, so you can still get your shopping-induced adrenaline going without having to walk around the Twenty Ninth Street mall. Here are a few of the best spots for scoring a wardrobe update (and more) that

2486 Baseline Road Let’s start with a classic: Goodwill. First off, don’t go to the donation center on Walnut Street (Google Maps isn’t always your friend). This is at Baseline and Broadway. Schedule a chunk of time for this stop, because you can spend hours just going through the racks of clothes. You can usually put together a nearly complete outfit for $10 or less if you’re willing to do the digging. Don’t skip over the housewares section, either, or the furniture. You can usually find all of the coffee mugs you can fit in your dorm, art for the pasty white walls and storage bins for all the crap you didn’t realize you had until you moved. Karing Kind: Boulder’s First Fully-Licensed Recreational Marijuana Dispensary By Brittany Anas

W

hether you enjoy marijuana or you are looking to imbibe for the first time, experiencing a quality “Rocky Mountain high” is part of the quintessential Boulder experience for many University of Colorado students. Helping you do just that is Karing Kind – Boulder County’s first fully licensed recreational dispensary – which places a high (hard to get around that pun!) priority on its customers. With thoughtful services that allow you to pre-order your favorite products, highly knowledgeable budtenders and quality products, the dispensary has built a loyal customer base over the years. “Our main goal is to educate people to make sure they have a good experience,” says Karing Kind Owner Dylan Donaldson, a CU graduate. Here’s five reasons to make Karing Kind your go-to dispensary. KARING KIND MADE HISTORY Weed smokers and concentrate connoisseurs will appreciate this: Karing Kind is a pioneer when it comes to the legal marijuana movement. Karing Kind first opened in 2009 as a medical dispensary. When marijuana gained legal recreational status, Karing Kind, in February 2014, became the first dispensary in Boulder County to sell

recreational weed and was among the first dispensaries in the state to do so. THE DISPENSARY CARES ABOUT WHAT YOU’RE SMOKING Marijuana consumers have become increasingly interested in knowing exactly what they’re smoking and they are conscientious about their health, Donaldson says. “I’ve noticed more people want to be more educated,” he says. “They care more about what they’re putting in their bodies.” Karing Kind grows organic, pesticide-free marijuana. Also, Karing Kind’s in-house line of concentrates are processed by using non-toxic purification methods, which translates to safe but potent butter, hash and oils. Staff members can also answer any of your questions about vendor products that the dispensary sells.

FIRST-TIME MARIJUANA SMOKERS ARE WELCOME If you’re a cannabis rookie, you’ve probably got a lot of questions when it comes to various marijuana products – whether that’s which strains are best for you and what’s the difference between concentrates and flower. Knowledgeable and experienced budtenders and staff members at Karing Kind love educating consumers to help them make the best decisions. Tell the budtenders what type of experience you’d like to have, and they’ll help you find a product that’s best for you. KARING KIND IS AFFORDABLE Affordability is a top priority for Karing Kind. There are several ways to save on your weed purchases. For starters, because the dispensary is on the edge of Boulder and is technically in Boulder County, the tax rate is lower. Karing

Kind crunched the numbers – their taxes are just about 15 percent, while the average tax rate at neighboring dispensaries is closer to 24 percent. In addition to that, be on the lookout for ads in the Colorado Daily, offering student discounts. Plus, the dispensary has a rewards program that will text you deals and specials to your phone. Or, you can opt to get e-mails; that way you’ll receive not just coupons, but also the latest reviews of products. The deals don’t stop with the pot, though. Karing Kind is also the official sponsor for Fox and Boulder Theater, and will sometimes hold raffles for show tickets. THE CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE IS SEAMLESS Karing Kind is just outside of Boulder, about a mile north of the Broadway and Highway U.S. 36/28th Street intersection. The advantage? Beyond free parking, Donaldson often hears from customers who appreciate the discreteness of the location. Plus, Karing Kind is open until 10 p.m. every day, and holds discounts after 7 p.m. To really make this seamless, customers can go on Karing Kind’s website and check out which products are available, reserve them online and then pick them up in store. Parkour is like a freeform version of gymnastics By Katie Nelson For the Colorado Daily pex Louisville, 1772 Prairie Way Unit G, Louisville, 720-645-1224, apexmovementlouisville.com Instructor: Alex Tilmes has been doing parkour for five years. He’s been teaching parkour for over two years, after taking Apex’s coaching apprenticeship. “I love training with other people. It’s obviously not a team sport, but it’s most fun when you do it with your best friends,” says Tilmes. What is the workout? Tilmes describes parkour as “getting from point A to point B as efficiently and quickly as possible.” He teaches the moves and skills necessary to make that possible. It’s like a freeform version of gymnastics. Teachers provide a tool kit of skills to navigate their environment, and the skills are drilled until they become second nature. We practiced swinging on bars, landing on an inclined surface and rebounding back onto the bar. Another exercise was learning how to run then jump over an object by planting our hands and tucking our legs before sending our legs though and pushing away.

Parkour from page 42 Left to my own devices, I would have awkwardly crawled over the box with much less efficiency. It’s a grown-up version of playing on the monkey bars, but as with most adults, there’s somewhere you have to be, so the obstacles need to be circumnavigated to get to the final destination. Obstacles in the gym include large wooden boxes, bars, tall walls and inclined surfaces. What’s different? “Parkour is a huge workout,” says Tilmes. “A lot of people say they found muscles they didn’t know they had before.” It’s both a workout and skills-building class. Everything you learn can be applied outside of the gym, and it helps build confidence and body awareness. “I want everyone to have a lot of fun while progressing as well as getting into shape,” says Tilmes. The Level 2 class I took is not where a new student starts. The gym offers a structured introductory series for adults that’s once a week for eight weeks. “We start from the ground up. You start by crawling on the floor before moving to heights. We teach you how to fall first so you don’t hurt yourself if something goes wrong,” says Tilmes. Cost: You can try out the free park-

Try doing some crunches upside down By Katie Nelson For the Colorado Daily luminar Aerial, 2655 Industrial Lane, Broomfield, 720-445- 0415, iluminaraerial.com Instructor: Daniel Nolasco is originally from El Paso, Texas, and he moved to Colorado at a young age. His resume is very impressive. He trained in aerial dance at Frequent Flyers Productions in Boulder. He then completed the two-year professional program at the New England Center for Circus Arts in Brattleboro, Vt., before joining the staff at Iluminar Aerial. It doesn’t end there. He has gone to Germany for an eight-month contract on a cruise ship. If you ever wondered what someone can do with training in aerial arts and circus, here is a great

I

example. He’s traveling through Europe and North America taking his passion for performance on the road — or should I say water? The AirFIT class will continue as usual in his absence, with other instructors filling in. What is the workout? AirFIT, also known as Aerial Boot Camp, is a unique strength-training workout, using aerial silks and rope to build practical strength. By practical, I mean these exercises build the strength needed to excel in other aerial endeavors — whether that’s aerial acrobatics, trapeze or just climbing a rope. Aerial silks are large ribbons of fabric that hang from the ceiling. They can hang either like a hammock, with both ends secured at the ceiling, or straight down, like tails that can be tied together

stand why. There were 10 different stations, each one using either an aerial silk or rope. Daniel explained the exercise for each station and demonstrated how to use the apparatus. Each one focused on a different part of the body. There was rope climbing, side crunches with your feet in the aerial sling, upsidedown crunches, leg lifts while holding onto the rope and a stretching station, to name a few. My personal Jeremy Papasso / Staff Photographer favorite was the crying staNatalie Morvay works out during an AirFIT class at the Iluminar Aerial tion, which is like an aerial Studio in Broomfield. hammock for when you’re tired and you need a break, or hang loose. I always enjoy workouts that make you feel like you’ve learned a new skill, something you can take home with you instead of just sore muscles. What I didn’t like: It was very humbling, which I begrudgingly admit. Doing an exercise for three minutes is difficult, especially a new

one. There wasn’t any expectation from the instructor that I should be able to do it the whole time, just my personal drive to prove myself. We could all use a little reality check from time to time. How I felt after the class: Like jelly. My arms made it until I got home and collapsed on the couch in a heap. I keep telling myself I need to work on my abs: Mission accomplished.

What’s different? For the first 10 minutes on the trampoline, you are reminded why you enjoyed jumping so much as a kid. It’s fun and you can’t help but smile. Thirty minutes in, sweating and breathing hard, I realized I’d underestimated this class. It’s not the kind of jumping you did as a kid. Instead of trying to jump as high as you can, you’re pushing your feet into the trampoline, bending slightly at the waist, all while attempting to keep your chest and head at the same height. This engages your core and makes your legs work much harder. Rebounding also claims to transport lymphatic fluid through the lymph system, helping to move toxins out of the body. For people with injures that keep them from running, the trampoline is easy on the joints. Balancing moves on the rebounder make your muscles work harder to keep the body stable than they would on a hard surface.

The studio also offers its signature classes throughout the week. Every class is different and you don’t know what you’ll be doing when you walk into class. There are TRX bands, weights, bosu, medicine balls and kickboxing. “It’s fun that people can come in and do something different every single day. I think it makes us stronger and more flexible in both our minds and bodies,” Franklin said. Cost: The first two classes are free. Drop-in prices are $12 per class. The studio offers a 10-class punch card for $82. Unlimited monthly classes run $75 a month. Level: Anyone with a basic level of fitness can take this class without a problem. Julia continuously offers variations during class and everyone is comfortable working at their own pace. I’d be concerned about someone who has injuries that affect their balance, like weak ankles. Julia

Cliff Grassmick / Staff Photographer Julie Franklin leads the Bounce Beautiful class at Begin Fitness in Niwot.

Bounce from page 48 recommends a couple oneon-one classes to start for someone who has concerns about their ability level. When: The rebounding class is at 9:15-10:15 a.m. Wednesdays and 7:30-8:30 a.m. Saturdays. What to prepare: Regular workout clothes, tennis shoes and water. You don’t have to wear shoes on the rebounder. Muscles worked: It was a great cardio workout. Just a couple hours after class, my abs were already sore. The next day, I felt this in my legs and abs. What I loved: It was so much fun to jump on the rebounder, even halfway in when I was sweating up a storm. The other students were so friendly. They were laughing and smiling during and after class. The studio

felt like a safe and welcoming environment for people to find their own place of strength without judgment. What I didn’t like: I had some trepidation going into class, as I was sure I would fall off the rebounder. Surprisingly, my body was pretty good at regulating itself and I didn’t fall once. There is a learning curve with this class. Getting used to jumping while executing the arm and leg moves can be tricky. After a couple classes, I’d imagine this gets easier. Just be prepared for some flailing in the meantime. How I felt after the class: I felt like a kid again. I didn’t shout at anyone in traffic or run the yellow light on my way to work. Even though I was running late, I was in no rush to assimilate back into adult life.

Cliff Grassmick / Staff Photographer The Bounce Beautiful class uses personal-size trampolines called rebounders.
