MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR Michelle Brietzke La Momo Maes

2017 Chamber Board Chair During times of change and uncertainty, we as leaders in our businesses and the community need to show more composure than ever. How we respond to growing pressures, marketplace demands and changing polices reflect our leadership maturity. We convey our leadership composure through our attitudes and body language. Leadership is not only about developing our people to raise performance, but also about the ability to make people feel safe and secure. Employees want to

work in an environment where they can focus on their goals rather than losing their jobs. Leaders who lack composure tend to work in panic mode and make employees feel uneasy. On the flip side, leaders who possess composure, can step back from a situation, look for opportunities and find solutions immediately. When leading in times of uncertainty and change, showing leadership maturity and being prepared will help make your employees feel safe and secure. Here are a few ways to maintain leadership composure during times of adversity: Don’t Allow Your Emotions to Get the Best of You Good leaders have emotional selfcontrol. If you allow your emotions to get in the way, employees can interpret your

behavior as not possessing the qualities to handle a situation and that may cause them to become distracted. Don’t Take Things Personally Business decisions don’t always play out logically. As a leader, remain calm and don’t get defensive or feel that you must always justify your decisions and actions. When you take things personally, it may make your employees believe you don’t have things under control. Keep a Positive Mental Attitude Employees are always watching their leader’s actions. Leaders set the tone for their business. Employees feed off the attitude of their leaders. Keeping a positive attitude while moving forward will help everyone focus on creating a more

productive environment. Act Like You’ve Been There Before Great leaders know that one of the most effective ways to maintain composure during difficult times is to act like you’ve been there before. They will take a genuine approach to issues in a way to ease the concerns that everyone else is experiencing. Your composure will put their minds at ease. If you let concern turn into worry and worry into fear, it will be easy to lose your composure. By maintaining composure, you will be able to face the ever-changing business environment and its related issues head on. When you have composure, you’ll be able to put those you lead at ease and create a productive environment that feels safe and secure.
