hen the Colorado Daily sat down for drinks with its subjects earlier this summer, it said, “Let’s think of a clever concept. Something different for a special section that will be distributed to the fine fools of Boulder.” Then it got wasted and we had to carry Fantz it home. But it was a successful night. The Tea was born. The Tea. The T. It’s the talk. The truth. The news. The exclusive. From 19th-century women gathering to gossip over afternoon tea in corsets, petticoats and large hats, to today’s drag culture “spilling the tea” among its queens swathed in glitter and glam, “The Tea” means to share the gossip, to get the scoop. “My proper role is to honor and obey my husband,” said a random lady named Victoria in 1890s England, adjusting her bustle while sipping high tea with the dames. “Rubbish, Victoria, spill the tea,” the dames retorted. “Very well,” Victoria replied. “Charles was stuffing his bags o’ mystery* for supper when he put my hand on his giblets. I was rather not in the mood for ill discourse, so I obliged.” Gasps ensued among doilies and assorted pastries. “Girl, it’s like my mom always said, ‘Two tears in a bucket, motherfuck it,’” The Lady Chablis chimed as she sashayed through trays of cucumber

sandwiches. “It’s your T, honey.” Jaws hit lap clutches. “Spoons on your saucers, queens. Close those yaps,” The Lady said. “My T?” Victoria asked. “Yeah, your T. Your thing, your business, what’s goin’ on in your life,” Lady Chablis said. That mashup was brought to you by “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil” and inspiration from a “Titanic” scene. B

oulderites are blessed with a big backyard. Boulder’s Opens Space and Mountain Parks Department manages more than 155 miles of trails to host your hikes. Plus, there are dozens of great places to camp in the county. Whether you’re new to hiking and camping, or you’ve conquered a good deal of 14ers and love backpacking, the experts at Neptune Mountaineering, 633 S. Broadway in Boulder – an iconic outdoor retailer in Boulder – have you covered. Here, they’ll give you the lay of the land of camping and hiking in and around Boulder.

Must-have gear for hiking in Boulder

The weather can change very quickly in Colorado, so make sure you have the ability to add (and shed) layers, says Barry Robertson, with Neptune Mountaineering. A daypack or fanny pack to carry a rain jacket and other essentials is key. “When hiking at our high elevation you’ll want to stay hydrated, so the No. 1 must-have piece of gear is a water bottle or hydration bladder,” he says.

Robertson recommends choosing a vacuum-insulated bottle to have cool water in summer and water which doesn’t freeze in winter. If you use a hydration bladder, get some HydraPak Bottle Bright tablets and your bladder will be clean without tasting like cleaners. If you are hiking in the afternoon or evening in the shoulder seasons, always stash a fully charged headlamp in your pack. “It’s really easy to be out on the trail longer than you anticipate and have darkness descend before you can,” he says. Of course a good fitting pair of hiking shoes or boots with a sole that will grip particularly when descending on rocky steps is essential. In winter, Robertson suggests adding a set of Kahtoola microspikes. Plenty of trails have north or east-facing sections where ice forms and stays for long periods, he explains.

Gear new campers need

A good packable insulated jacket is a really good place to start because nights and mornings at altitude are often a lot colder than first-time campers assume, Robertson says. An insulated jacket will provide plenty of use in Colorado even if you don’t become a regular camper or backpacker. You’ll also want a comfortable sleeping pad, a sleeping bag that is warm enough for the altitude

Don’t attract bears!

“Be sure that you have some way to stow your food so that bears can’t get to it,” says Pam Ranger Roberts with Neptune. “Not all campgrounds have bear-proof storage, so call ahead to ask. If they don’t, bring a bear vault or bear canister.” If you’re backpacking, you’ll want to bring gear to hang food from a tree. An Ursa-sac is great along with a sturdy, adequate length cord, Ranger Roberts says. An absolute no-no: do not eat or leave food inside your tent. Also, if backpacking into your camping spot, trekking poles are crucial to navigate rain-slick trails, steep descents and creek crossings, she says. Another Colorado-centric tip? Be aware that thunderstorms often occur with little advance warning above tree line in the afternoons. says Robertson. “Have a realistic cutoff time if you are going to cross a pass or make a summit attempt and stick to it – if the group is behind schedule, it’s much better to head back down to lower ground and watch the lightning than it is to be caught in a storm,” he says. Altitude affects the supply of oxygen to your muscles as well as making it harder to breath, Robertson reminds. “People new to Colorado may find that they deplete their reserves of energy more rapidly than they are used to above 10,000 feet,” he says.

What gear should camping enthusiasts invest in?

If you love camping, and go frequently, it’s worth investing in a top-notch sleeping bag, says Ranger Roberts. High-quality sleeping bags are warmer, lighter and more packable than their budget alternatives. “Considering that a good sleeping bag will last most of your life, it’s ultimately less expensive than buying two or three cheap bags in the same time span,” she says.

Pam Ranger Roberts, a longtime employee of Neptune Mountaineering, answered some need-to-know questions about camping and hiking in Boulder. Favorite hike in Boulder? South Boulder Peak / Bear Peak from the South Mesa Trail trailhead. The Five Peak Challenge should be on every Boulderite’s bucket list. When I go hiking, I always bring ... a rain shell and a headlamp. Best beer to pair with s’mores? Left Hand Nitro Milk Stout. Favorite piece of camping gear? Peaceful Valley and Camp Dick, a few miles north of Ward on Colorado Highway 72. Camping etiquette 101 is … When backpacking, practice ‘Leave No Trace.’ Pack out what you pack in. In a campground setting, respect that the other campers around you are there to enjoy nature’s tranquility so leave behind the generator and don’t play loud music. Best place to watch a sunrise and sunset in Boulder? Sunrise from the Boulder Reservoir. Sunset off the back side off Flagstaff, there are a couple overlooks past the amphitheater turnoff. gainst all odds, I enjoy the act of sleeping in the dirt (and have a yurt with my name on it for a fancy twist this winter). One of my friends was also generous enough to share a backpacking permit this summer for Mirror Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park — and you don’t have to lug all your clothes and food 13 miles on your back to camp in the area. If you, too, enjoy leaving your bed behind for a poorly inflated mat in the woods, you’re in luck. It’s easy to get outdoors and camp in the mountains west of Boulder, though you might need to plan ahead with a reservation, depending on where you go. Here are some ideas to get you started:

Winiger Ridge Campground

It’s that simple.

What about medical marijuana?

Doctors prescribe medical marijuana for conditions like anxiety and epilepsy. But unless you have particular needs, the prescription might not be worth the hassle. “The only difference between medical and recreational

[marijuana] is the quantity that you’re allowed to buy during any one day,” Donaldson explained. Because of this, Karing Kind does not fill medical weed prescriptions. “We decided to serve recreational users with competitively priced medical-grade marijuana ... There’s no medical database. It avoids a huge paper trail that a lot of people just don’t like.” In short, it’s easy and safe to purchase high-quality weed discreetly. No paperwork required.

What are “strains?”

Strains are simply varieties of weed. There are two major types: •

Indica, which produces a “body high” while leaving your brain alert

Sativa, which produces a “head high” while leaving your body energized

There are hundreds of different strains under the major categories. New ones are harvested all the time, each one with unique effects. Karing Kind develops their own strains, too. Donaldson compared it to a brewery making microbrews. “Our goal is basically variety and

diversity ... to try new stuff each time.”

What forms does marijuana take?

One of the coolest things about pot is the variety of ways to use it. Each form has different effects, potencies and purposes.

Flowers

This is most people’s idea of weed. The green buds from marijuana plants come in different potencies and types. After picking, the flowers are dried and ground up. Smokers put ground weed into water bongs or pipes, roll them into joints, or vaporize them in cool-air machines. Smoking is the most popular way to enjoy marijuana. Users feel the effects quickly and can adjust consumption as needed. It’s also an efficient way to explore how different types of weed make you feel.

Edibles

Some flowers get put into edibles, or food with marijuana in it. Baked goods, chocolates, candies and confections – if you can cook it, you can probably make it into an edible. They’re categorized by how

many milligrams of THC (the chemical that makes you high) are in each serving. Edibles work great for folks with asthma or users who want intense experiences. Their many flavors and textures make them fun to consume. However, newbies should proceed with caution. You can’t overdose on marijuana, but you can absolutely use too much in one sitting. “Start slow, take half the recommended dose, and wait two to four hours,” Donaldson said. “We recommend users to take notes. That really helps us guide them to the right type of products so that they can have a good experience every time.”

Extracts & Concentrates

This one’s usually for more experienced users. Marijuana concentrates, or CO2 concentrates and oils, are potent THC solutions. These come in many different textures and potencies, each one suited to different uses. Most commonly, these oils are put in discreet vape pens or disposable vaporizers. Because the concentrates draw out specific effects from weed, it’s best to know which strain you prefer and why before buying. Karing Kind actually makes their own CO2 concentrates, citing their cleanliness and lack of adverse ingredients.

Other than the weed, what do I need?

Users will need different equipment depending on how they choose to enjoy marijuana. Consult with your friendly “budtender” to figure out what kind of consumption best works for you. The only good news about mental health struggles (besides making great art) is that there is help available, yes even in the time of the coronavirus. The University of Colorado Boulder of fers several options for students looking for counseling or psychological help. For counseling services for students, CU’s Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) has virtual counseling sessions available by visiting colorado.edu/counseling. Appointments are available from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. CAPS offers professional counselors for individual counseling and groups and workshops along with residence life support and outreach and con-

sultation. Join an online wo orkshop to support students coping with COVID-related stress, anxiety and uncertainty (if you’re not, what’s your secret?). There is also e-Let’s Talk, a free service in which CU students can check in via telehealth with a consultation with a counselor, without the need to make an appointment. There is also the Wardenburg Health Center, where you can find behavioral health care under the primary care umbrella. Students who have purchased the CU Student Gold Health Insurance have access to unlimited group therapy and are seen in the clinic without additional payment, except for $20 copays for individual therapy after 14 visits per policy year. he Boulder Bookstore is hosting author talks over Zoom. Downtown Boulder has curated an epic Spotify playlist with songs that dial up memories of this charismatic college town. (Yes, of course it includes the Chainsmokers’ “Closer” hit that makes a lyrical reference to “your roommate back in Boulder”). Amana Yoga is holding online classes to help you destress. Frasca Food and Wine is curating weekly dinner kits complete with prepared ingredients. And, thankfully, the Pearl Street pedestrian mall in the heart of downtown is a consummate host for outdoor dining should you want to get a taste of Boulder while soaking up this famous Colorado sunshine. As University of Colorado students have returned to Boulder for the fall semester – which, amid the coronavirus, is a mix of inperson, online and hybrid courses – officials have been planning for a new normal on campus and in downtown Boulder, the heart of the city. While it’s not business as usual, per se, downtown Boulder businesses have certainly gotten creative amid the pandemic and pivoted in new ways to give its residents – including new and returning CU students – interesting ways to experience the vibrancy of this city in an era of social distancing. Restaurants, stores, salons and wellness centers in town are welcoming back students with safety precautions in place. The Downtown Boulder Partnership has been working closely with CU officials, as well as the Boulder Chamber of Commerce and the Convention and Visitors Bureau to come together as a community and

he modern world has gotten a little hectic lately. Despite the numerous challenges we’ve seen in 2020 so far, many of us are still resolved to live our lives. And really, there’s no reason to put life on hold. You still have career plans. You can still find ways to grow. And you have some good resources right here locally. The University of Colorado has solid continuing education options. If you’re interested in learning something new (or brushing up on subjects that may feel a little rusty), you’ll find a wide range of flexible options. Whether you’re just starting out, narrowing in on your 5-year goals, or looking to add on to a completed degree, a continuing education program may

be just what you’re looking for. We visited with Scott Battle, the Assistant Dean for Online Academic Programs. Here’s what he had to say about continuing education. “CU Boulder’s Division of Continuing Education is offering over 200 faculty-led online courses this fall. We have different options for terms of length. Students can choose full-semester, 7-week accelerated and 6-month self-paced schedules.” It might surprise you to learn that over a third of college students are over 25. For the non-traditional student, online learning is a nobrainer. Sure, you’ll miss out on the campus experience, but you’ll get a lot of flexibility in return. In fact, the number of students taking online courses exclusively is close to three million. And another three million taking at least one

online class. Why the high numbers? That’s easy. In most cases, it’s flexibility and freedom. Online continuing education means students can arrange coursework without sacrificing their jobs or shortchanging family responsibilities. There’s no commute. There’s no rigid in-person class schedule. And, perhaps most of all, modern technology has made online coursework a breeze. Plus, for many people in 2020, COVID-19 concerns are still a very real thing. Online distance learning is a safe alternative for people with compromised immune systems. It’s also a safe option for those with general health concerns. The main draw, however, may be its ability to accommodate working adults. Battle notes, “Working adults, in

particular, enjoy the flexibility of online courses. They can continue learning while also tending to busy professional and personal lives. Students appreciate the flexibility of online courses, especially during these times. They can continue learning even while juggling many responsibilities and issues.” Term-based online CE courses combine a traditional class experience with the flexibility of a web-based environment. Instructors and students communicate through CU Boulder’s online learning management system. Each online course is unique. Courses use assignments that combine reading, writing, online quizzes, and discussion posts. Battle points out, “UC Boulder’s Continuing Education program offers 15 self-paced courses. Students may take up to six months to complete the assignments, projects, and exams.” UC Boulder’s online CE courses provide fit into almost any schedule. You can enroll at any time. Depending on your goals, you could finish in less than a semester ... take up to a full 6 months. You should allow at least two weeks of study for each credit hour you plan to take. Of course, more traditional term-based courses are available as well. CE term-based courses follow structured academic calendars and holiday schedules. These can be either a full-semester of ten sessions or seven-week accelerated sessions. Classes may have specific start and end dates and drop deadlines. Make sure to check scheduling details in the course listing.
