Top New Board Games By Robin Gibson, CTW Features Technology has tried its best to replace the board game, but despite the proliferation of electronic devices, board games remain a tried-and-true mechanism for bringing families together. While classics such as Scrabble and Monopoly are still popular, board games continue to flood the toy indus-
try every year. What is it about board games that people find so appealing? Perhaps, it’s the need to gather around a table to play them. The timeless appeal of board games is directly tied to our innate need to feel connected to one another. An added benefit is that they reduce screen time—a bonus for parents looking for fun ways to divert chil-
dren from screens. Board games create a reason to abandon devices in favor of human face time—not to be confused with the popular app. The result fosters bonding and shared creativity. So, what’s new and popular in the board game market for 2018? We have scoured the industry for the top new trends just in time for the holidays.
Family-Friendly Board Games Suitable for Young Children
Age appropriateness is critical when it comes to choosing board games for families with young children. You want to make sure that all the players can take part and engage in a manner they comprehend and understand, and that is suitable for their age group. These are our picks for the newest crop of small-child, family-friendly options:
Qwirkle Board Game ($35), this mix and match game of skill is like a blend of Dominos and Scrabble. The board, itself, is colorful, the rules are easy to understand — it’s an all-around good choice for a family game night with young players.
Monster Match
Richard Scarry’s Busytown Eye Found It! ($25), a literary game by maker Wonder Forge, this entry is perfect for families with children as young as three, and it encourages teamwork and observation. Children can also play the game with each other.
6 Holiday Gift Guide, Vol. 1
($18), another board game that tests your child’s matching skills while offering a chance for you to spend time together in play-mode as a family. The cool monster graphics will appeal to kids and adults alike.

Board Games for Tweens and Young Adults
Just because your children are getting older doesn’t mean you can’t lure them to the table by the call of competition. Enlist these new board games in your quest to maintain family bonding time:
Monopoly Stranger Things Edition ($35), popularized by the mega-
hit show on Netflix, chances are the tweens and teens in your household are fans, and you have the opportunity to dazzle them with your wealth of eighties knowledge—a new twist on a popular classic sure to please everyone.
Dude ($10) is a game only available at Target where players repeatedly say dude. No, really. While there’s no actual board, just playing cards, this still gets our vote for its sheer entertainment value and ability to draw folks to the table. Detective: A Modern Crime Board Game
($35), move over Clue, there’s a new mystery game in town. Sleuthing caps are needed to solve cases taken right from our news story headlines. Full disclosure: there is an online component for clues but we promise this screams fun, family game night.
Adult-Themed Board Games
Board games aren’t just for children. Adults appreciate them for the camaraderie they provide and the chance to congregate with friends. We’ve got newest crop of contenders sure to tickle your funny bone and provide endless hours of kid-free entertainment.
Decrypto ($16), brush up on your interpretation and process-of-deduc-
tion skills and see how well you communicate with your teammates. Hours of challenging team-based hilarity ensue as you try to outwit the enemy.
Pick Your Poison NSFW
Edition ($25), another new adult entry centered on (responsible) social drinking, this board game takes bad taste and mixes it with Cards Against Humanity. Shake and stir and you have all of the ingredients of a hilarious evening with friends.
Drink-A-Palooza ($35), described as “more
fun than one night can handle,” this “party in a box” will keep the party going and booze flowing if imbibing is on the agenda. Remember to always drink responsibly and enjoy the wild, good time.

Board games have long been a source of joy throughout history. Keep them front and center at home by hosting regular game nights with family and friends.

Family Fun Holiday activities that foster togetherness and keep your loved ones in the holiday spirit
By Denise K. James, CTW Features As the holiday season approaches, the excitement of buying gifts — and waiting to open them — can overshadow some of the more important moments of the season. This year, reclaim that warm and fuzzy feeling that the crowded mall just cannot provide and try some of these familyfriendly activities. A few of them can be shared with neighbors and close friends as well. ‘tis the season for togetherness!
‘Snow’ Day
No matter where you live in the U.S., it’s not always possible to celebrate a white Christmas. Not to worry. A “snow” themed day is almost as fun! Serve white foods such as alfredo with pasta, rice, cauliflower and marshmallow treats for dessert. Then, watch a snowy film and bundle up in your best winter gear and drink hot cocoa. All of the fun parts of a blizzard — but your bald tires will still grip the road.
Snack Swap
Invite close friends and neighbors over for a snack swap instead of just

classic for maximum bonding — think “Miracle on 34th Street.”
Gingerbread House Construction
a cookie swap. It’s a great way to experience fun new recipes and enjoy time together.
Dinner and a Movie Night
It’s not the holiday season without gobs of holiday movies available for streaming on your Netflix account, right? Take advantage of the mood and add a fun dinner. We particularly love finger foods that can be eaten in front of the television (with your permission, of course). Try small sandwiches with baby vegetables and healthy dips for a quick meal that little hands can grab. Don’t forget the popcorn and holiday cookies. As for the flick choice, we highly recommend a

Does anything say the holiday season quite the way gingerbread does? Ring in the month of December (or even earlier; we won’t judge) and let the kids go to town decorating their own gingerbread houses. The fun comes with customization, so don’t forget the colored icing, gumdrops, peppermints and any small confectionary items that are easy to “glue” onto the masterpiece. Round out the evening with festive drinks — some champagne for you, some warm spiced milk with honey for them.
November 22, 2018
Oh, Christmas Tree
Yes, the kids love the tree – but do they help you transport it, clear a space for it in the house and get it ready for the big day? This year, have the kids help you with tree-related chores such as moving furniture around, clearing clutter, sorting ornaments and untangling lights. Put them in charge of water-
ing the tree and sweeping or vacuuming the pine needles as well.
Holiday Helping Hands
Make sure your kids realize that other families might not be as fortunate as your own. It’s important to take some time during the season (and all year, really) to give back to the community. Share family experiences such as visiting a shelter, a soup kitchen or a children’s home and see how lending a helping hand makes the season brighter.
‘Make Room for Gifts’ Day
The kids want more toys and “stuff” to clut-
ter the house, right? So what better time to donate the items they’ve outgrown! Take a Saturday and have them clean out the closets, toy boxes and the playroom. Santa needs a place to put that new dollhouse, after all. © CTW Features

Things you put together PARENTS@PLAY
By Armin Brott and Samantha Feuss, Tribune News Service (TNS) We love putting things together, whether it’s a puzzle, a science kit, a brick tower, clues to an Escape-the-Room game or anything else. Those feelings of satisfaction can’t be beat — especially if you’ve worked with someone else (or a group of others) to accomplish your goal. Here are some great activities that will help you and your family piece together a lot of fun.
Holiday Glitter 500
(Master Pieces) In all honesty, we never would have thought of combining puzzles and glitter. But after spending some quality time putting together this 500-piece puzzle, it seems like a perfectly natural match. Based on the work of Oregon artist Dona Gelsinger, Holiday Glitter is one of four glitter-infused jigsaws. This one features, as you might guess, a sweet winter snow scene, complete with a friendly snowman, bunnies, a deer, other wildlife and an inviting cabin in the woods. The puzzle pieces are made from recycled material, and the glitter is already attached, so there’s no mess to clean up. Under $13. masterpiecesinc.com
T. Rex Bone Extractor Game
(Uncle Milton) Remember the old Operation game, in which players tried to remove a “patient’s” various body parts without setting off an alarm? This game is similar, except that instead of being a clown-nosed human, the patient is a T-Rex. Plus, there’s an educational component — players have to correctly answer a dinosaur-themed trivia question before they try to excavate the T. Reb bone. And watch out. If you accidentally touch the extractor tool to the side of the pit, you’ll awaken the prehistoric beast. Comes with 12 trivia cards, 12 bone pieces for extraction, and instructions. Batteries (2 AA) required but not included. Ages 6+. Under $29. unclemilton.com

Story Box Animal Adventures
(Laurence King) The latest in Laurence King’s growing Story Box series gives you all the tools you need to create a unique animal-based story. The kit contains 20 double-sided puzzle pieces (illustrated by Claudia Boldt) that can be put together, flipped, and arranged in any combination. If you use all the pieces, your story will be more than 8 feet long. But whatever you do, you and your child can work together to tell a different tail (hey, it’s animal-themed, after all) every time. Ages 3+. $14.99. laurenceking.com
I Saw It First! Jungle
(Laurence King) This is a unique spin on the spot-it-type game, because the game board itself is different every time. Fully assembled, the board features 300 jungle animals. Pull a tile from the bag and everyone races to be the first to find that animal. Some you’ll recognize, like the elephant, the leopard, the hippo and the gorilla. But others, like the giraffe weevil, the wire-tailed manakin and the eyelash viper will be a real challenge. Great for learning about animals. Under $20. laurenceking.com

The Story of Impressionism
(Laurence King) For many people, the goal of putting together a puzzle is to, well, put together the puzzle. But why not go a step further and learn something? This 1,000-piece jigsaw is a delightful introduction to the people and places of the Impressionist and Post-Impressionist eras. You’ll meet artists like Pierre August Renoir, Paul Cezanne, Berthe Morisot and Mary Cassatt, novelists and thinkers like Oscar Wilde and Emile Zola, and many others. You’ll also discover places like the Moulin Rouge, the river Seine, and the Paris Opera. About $16. laurenceking.com
The Dream of Surrealism
(Laurence King) Similar to The Story of Impressionism, this 1,000-piece puzzle is a dazzling (and sometimes dizzying) exploration of the artists, poets, muses, concepts and places behind the movement that turned the art world on its head. You’ll meet Salvador Dali’s mustache and melting clock and Rene Magritte’s pipe (which isn’t actually a pipe), dance with Sigmund Freud, marvel at Frida Kahlo and Leonora Carrington, listen to a donkey playing the piano, and much more. About $16. laurenceking.com (Armin and Samantha are the authors of the popular parenting blogs: mrdad.com and havesippywilltravel.com. For more reviews of toys and games, visit parentsatplay.com)

It’s a Break
Under-the-tree fun for tweens and teens who need something to do on holiday break By Lisa Iannucci, CTW Features
Holiday shopping for tweens and teens isn’t always easy. They have many interests and deciding on the right item might feel like an impossible task. Before you give up and just buy an impersonal gift card or hand them money to spend as they like, consider one of these amazing gift ideas:
Environmental gifts
Nowadays tweens and teens are all about making a difference, so present them with a cool gift that protects the environment at the same time. Purchasing one 4Ocean bracelet ($20), which is made from recycled materials, helps to pick up one pound of garbage from the ocean floor and your teen will really feel like their gift made a difference. There are monthly bracelet subscriptions also available. They can also make their own gardens with the Mason Jar DIY Terrarium Kit, Laguna, Newport, or Portland ($14.97 each). It’s a do-it-yourself terrarium and includes moss, rocks, soil and bark — everything they need to make a miniature garden.
Photo-friendly
Teens and tweens are always taking selfies to keep for themselves or to post on Instagram and other social media, but now they can print out some of their favorites and stick them to their notebooks or up on their bulletin boards. This Canon IVY Mini Photo Printer ($129.99) is Bluetooth friendly and is a lightweight 5.6 ounces, so the kids can take it to college or to birthday parties. They won’t lose the ability to decorate their photos either because the printer comes with frames, emojis, stickers, filters, text, tile print, collage print and more that they can add.
12 Holiday Gift Guide, Vol. 1
Books
You can forget about the fancy electronics and motorized scooters and indulge your tweens and teens in books to spark their imagination. Tweens will love “The Atlas Obscura Explorer’s Guide for the World’s Most Adventurous Kid” by Dylan Thuras and Rosemary Mosco ($19.95), which takes kids on a journey to some of the most mesmerizing and mysterious wonders around the world. Teen girls will appreciate the book “Strong Is the New Pretty: A Guided Journal for Girls” ($13.95) from Kate T. Parker. It celebrates courage, individuality, confidence, creativity, and joy and provides prompts on every page so that the child can express herself. Finally, imagine turning a book into a beehive! The book, aptly named “Turn This Book Into a Beehive! And 19 Other Experiments and Activities That Explore the Amazing World of Bees” by Lynn Brunelle ($19.95) introduces tweens to bees and, by removing the cover and pages, can turn the book into a beehive.

Gifts for getting around
Skateboards, scooters and electric bikes, oh my! Kids love getting around on wheels and will love getting one of these as a gift. A 12-year-old designed Locker Boards, compact skateboards made with environmentally-conscious recycled decks. They range in price from $98 to $128 and $1 of every purchase is donated to Ocean Unite). For those 13 and up, the Bolt Electric Bike is lightweight and easy to use, getting through the streets at 16 mph. Selling at $399.99, it’s cheaper than buying them a car! Holiday Gift Guide, Vol. 1 13
Top Smart Home Gadgets By Barry Waldman, CTW Features If you’re smart, you’re making your home smart too. 2018 is the year of the smart…everything. By smart, we mean gadgets that connect to the Internet in ways that free you to do other things, mostly not so smart, like surfing social media while driving or walking crowded streets. So if that person in your life isn’t on board, the holiday season is a great time to give them a push toward smartness. Here are 6 affordable home gadgets — smart, of course — that will make great holiday gifts this year.
2. Ring Doorbell 2, $100
1. WeMo Smart Plug, $35 This is the smart gift that makes other gifts smart.
Turn your phone or tablet into a mobile peephole with the Ring Doorbell. It senses when someone is approaching your house and alerts you, then allows you to speak, see and hear the visitor from anywhere in the house or across the world. It’s amazingly easy to install, so even if the person for whom you’re buying it isn’t smart, they can make their doorbell so.
Plug a device into the WeMo Smart Plug in order to control that device remotely, even on the other side of the world. Left the iron on? If it’s plugged into the Smart Plug you can turn it off from the Roman Coliseum, the Great Barrier Reef or the Taj Mahal — assuming those places have cellphone reception. Use it to power on and off lights when you’re away too.

3. HapiFork, $25 Yes, even your fork can be smart these days. The HapiFork counts how many forkfulls of food you eat at a meal and the time between them — and then reports back to you on a mobile app. It’s like having your mother right there inside your fork telling you to slow down and eat less. The folks at HapiFork say their gadget improves digestion, slows weight gain, and inhibits gastric reflux, all for just 25 bucks.
4. Ecovacs Winbot Window Cleaning Robot, $150 You’ve seen the magic of the Roomba, the computerized vacuum cleaner that navigates around your furniture and pets. The Winbot takes that concept to glass surfaces. It cleans framed and unframed glass of any kind or thickness, and it even cleans horizontal surfaces. Cleaning mirrors and other glass surfaces is a pain unless you let Winbot and its suction devices handle the job for you.
6. Vimana Parenting Device, $59 Fight tech with tech, says Vimana, a startup that is raising money to mass produce a gadget that helps cure digital addictions. The Vimana Parenting Device allows parents to monitor and control their children’s screen time remotely. The device will plug into a home router and can be set on school mode so children can only log into educational sites, or family mode that pauses all incoming messages during dinner. If a 59-dollar device can save civilization, this is it. Pre-orders are now available at Vimana.io.
5. Tron Fingerprint Shackle Lock, $59 Throw out the keys and combinations you need to open your bike lock, if you haven’t already lost them. The Fingerprint Shackle Lock opens with the one key you’ll never lose and no one else has — your fingerprint. It takes half a second to scan your print and open the lock, and gets 2,000 openings per battery.

Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree
Headphones remain one of the most sought-after gifts of the holiday season, but not all are created equal By Lisa Iannucci, CTW Features Looking for the perfect holiday gift this season? Everyone loves music, but not everyone loves to hear what you’re listening to. So, gift your favorite musicloving person a great pair of headphones, like any of the ones we have listed here, so they can enjoy their tunes and not bother those around them.
Skullcandy
The popular headphone company, Skullcandy, recently introduced two new wireless products that would make great holiday gifts. Crusher 360 and the noise canceling Venue which has refined acoustics and a built-in mic. Your loved one will get up to 29 hours of battery life too, so their favorite tunes won’t die out so suddenly and they’ll actually feel the sound coming from the headphones. The Skullcandy prices range from $179.99 to $249.99.
JBL Everest
Want to listen to your favorite Christmas music? Or how about the latest tunes dropped by Kendrick Lamar? If you have the JBL Everest headphones, you can simply ask Google to play your favorite Kendrick music or get into the holiday spirit with Silent Night. These hands-free headphones incorporate the Google Assistant so you can multitask and get all your presents wrapped and cookies baked, while you sing along. There are three models of the JBL Everest headphones, so you can choose from the in-ear JBL Everest 110GA, the JBL Everest 310GA (on-ear), or the JBL Everest 710GA (over-ear). Depending on the style you choose, the prices range from $99.95 to $249.95.

Soul Electronics
If you’re looking for a gift for those who love music and who love to workout, these Soul Electronics headphones might be the perfect gift. These X-TRA Wireless Performance Bluetooth over-ear headphones are ideal to use during their workout or while they are taking an evening walk. The headphones’ coolest feature is, just that, an attachable headband that provides a cooling sensation on those hot, sweltering nights. Users will get a full 24 hours of playtime, safety LED lights and ear pads that are meant to come out and be washed. They are also foldable and lightweight so you can be packed into your carry-on luggage or toss them into a pocketbook. Cost is approximately $149.99.

Santa’s special mailboxes return to Longmont Misty Kaiser for Holiday Gift Guide Santa is already on the lookout for letters from all the best boys and girls and the best way to make sure he gets them is to drop them off in any of his specially decorated white mailboxes now in several of Longmont’s favorite retailers. Letters left in the festive mailboxes require no postage or exact address thanks to the honorary elves at Hover Senior Community. They have promised Santa
and Mrs. Claus that they will personally deliver all letters from his special mailboxes straight to the North Pole. And since they don’t want anyone to miss their chance, there will be
stationery and envelopes available at each of the boxes. Children who write their holiday wishes in a letter and drop it off by December 4 will receive a
reply directly from Santa Claus! Mom and Dad, be sure to include a return address with your child’s letter so that Santa knows where to send his reply. Santa wants to say a special thank you to his friends at Hover Senior Community, Ziggi’s Coffee, Ace Hardware, Lucky’s Market, Brown’s Shoe Fit and Scrumptious., for watching over his mailboxes. And, a hearty “Ho, Ho, Ho” to his helpers at Hover Senior Community — they are most certainly on the “Nice” list!

Holiday Gift Guide, Vol. 1 19
Gifts for a Cozy Night In By Emma Castleberry, Holiday Gift Guide Sometimes, the best gift you can give is the simple comfort of a night at home. While you might not be able to clear a loved one’s calendar, you can provide the tools they need to stay warm and cozy.
Fuzzy Slippers
There are few things worse than hopping out of bed and feeling your toes immediately freeze over. Help your loved one battle the icy winter floor with a pair of fuzzy slippers. Brown’s Shoe Fit Company suggests the Haflinger Grizzy Clog. “These are great for a house shoe and can be worn outside as well,” says manager Jason Wetzl. “Wool uppers provide comfort and warmth and the cork footbed provides excellent support for optimal foot health.” The Grizzly Clog comes in a variety of colors but the eggplant, pictured here, is a seasonal choice. If your gift recipient isn’t a fan of clogs (yes, they can be polarizing), the Asportuguesas wool slipper is another great option. “These slippers have a wool upper with a closed heel for comfort and warmth,” says Wetzl. “The cork and latex outsole provide a comfortable and durable sole for both inside and outside wear.” Brown’s Shoe Fit, 73 Main St., Longmont, (303) 776-2920, longmontshoes.com
A Festive Home
Don’t let the drab weather of winter carry over into the home. Give a gift that will imbue holiday festivity into the house and heart of its recipient. One can’t help but smile at the sweet little homes of the Ginger Cottage collection. “The Ginger Cottage collection is a great way to bring some history and enchantment to your home, along with supporting an American-made business,” says Tarin Newell, owner of Sweet Nightingale Boutique and Home Decor. “Each cottage is handmade by ‘elves,’ with surprise hidden details inspired by German and American history to light up your holiday season.” Sweet Nightingale Boutique and Home Decor, 439 Main St., Longmont, (720) 600-4362, sweetnightingaleboutique.com

Liquid Warmth
Now that the home is decorated and feet are nestled cozy in their new slippers, the natural next step is a delicious, warm drink. Dennis Dinsmore, owner and managing partner at Wyatt’s Wet Goods, suggests one (or, perhaps, both?) of two rum-spiked winter cocktails: the Ichanog Crane or the classic Yule Nog. Both can be made with delicious Tenpenny Rum, a blend of fresh Caribbean rum with vanilla and spices. Distilled from sugarcane molasses, Tenpenny Rum contains 50 percent of the sugar from the cane juice, ensuring a sweet and creamy drink regardless of which recipe you choose. “It makes a good gift because it encompasses everything good about the holidays: a classic drink to enjoy by the fire,” says Dinsmore. Small Business Saturday
Misty Kaiser, Holiday Gift Guide Since 2011, the Longmont Downtown Development Authority (LDDA) has encouraged participation in Small Business Saturday, an event started by American Express in 2010 to help small businesses thrive in the wake of the recession. The LDDA joined as a “Neighborhood Champion” in the event’s second year.. “Each year the LDDA distributes promotional materials to downtown businesses, advertises downtown as a Small Business Saturday destination, and coordinates entertainment throughout the day,” says Colin Argys, event coordinator with the LDDA. Always held on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, Small Business Saturday had more than 7,000 participating Neighborhood Champions across the nation in 2017—a number that is likely to grow given the event’s success.
What’s Going On?
Visitors can watch ice-carving, listen to carolers and meet holiday characters strolling around downtown giving away gift cards and t-shirts. Throughout the weekend, LDDA will feature the “Downtown Shop Mob,” where customers can enter a drawing to win gift cards and other prizes. Over the weekend, LDDA will also launch the Winter Passport Program. Receive a sticker for every $10 spent at participating downtown businesses. After collecting 10 stickers, place them in the

passport and submit them for weekly drawings throughout December. All entries will qualify for the Grand Prize drawing in February. There will also be scavengerhunt activities that qualify for a prize drawing.
Investing in Each Other
Some downtown businesses will be offering extra incentives to entice shoppers to come shop their wares on Small Business Saturday. Kitchen Company, for example, will embrace the community spirit of the day by offering 15 percent off to customers who can provide a receipt from that day from another downtown Longmont business. “We really want to help support other places downtown and think it’s a win-win proposition,” says owner Kristen Pellicer. “We know that more dollars are returned to our local economy when customers choose to shop local and this event is a great reminder of that. I believe Longmont has a huge heart for local and it really shows on Small Business Saturday.”
