What To Do When Hearing Aids Have Stopped

(BPT) - Regular eye exams have always been an important part of maintaining healthy vision, but it turns out they can help keep your brain healthy, too. New research is revealing just how connected eye health and brain health are, and how receiving regular eye treatment might mean the difference between a healthy brain and cognitive decline.

That’s according to the authors of a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association Ophthalmology this summer. Researchers examined 2,520 adults age 65 and older over the course a decade and found a link between failing vision and mental decline. The exact nature of the relationship still needs to be better understood, but one thing is clear: Research shows that taking care of your vision is extremely important for maintaining good cognitive function.

The reasons behind the connection might be that declining vision discourages people from activities like reading and crossword puzzles that challenge the brain and keep it active. But whatever the root cause, the key takeaway stands out: older adults should get regular eye checkups and undergo treatment right away for any issues.

The good news is that maintaining eye health is well within most people’s grasp.

Two of the most common agerelated vision problems - cataracts and age-related macular degeneration (AMD) - have common treatments available that can help keep vision crisp, and potentially help reduce the risk of associated mental decline. The Mayo Clinic recommends that people 55 to 64 see their eye doctor every one to three years, and those 65 and older go once every year to two years. People who wear glasses or contacts, or have either a family history of eye disease or a chronic disease that puts them at greater risk, meanwhile, should schedule more frequent exams.

For some older and visually impaired people, however, it can be hard to get to appointments for exams or treatment. Transportation can be a major hurdle. A recent study by the Angiogenesis Foundation, for example, found that for 41 percent of people living with wet AMD, getting to and from appointments is their biggest challenge with making regular eye doctor appointments.

Think you’re too old to quit smoking?

Think again (BPT) - It’s no secret that tobacco smoke can be deadly. It is strongly linked to cancer, stroke, pulmonary issues and heart disease.

Although the prevalence of smoking in the U.S. decreased from 21 percent to 17 percent of adults over the past five years, according to America’s Health Rankings, the risk of dying from cigarette smoking has not decreased. In fact, the risk has increased over the past 50 years, and, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), one in five deaths is estimated to be attributed to smoking.

In its Guide to Choosing an Assisted Living Community, the Assisted Living Federation of America (ALFA.org), says: “Assisted Living is the senior living option that combines housing, support services, and health care, as needed. Seniors who choose assisted living enjoy an independent lifestyle with assistance customized to meet their needs, benefits that enrich their lives, and an environment that promotes well being and family connectedness … Staff is available to meet both scheduled and unscheduled needs. Communities typically offer dining, as well as social and wellness activities designed to support a well-rounded lifestyle…”

Of course, costs vary from one community to another and even within each community, depending on factors like apartment size, and types of services residents need. ALFA says that “assisted living often is less expensive than 12 SUCCESSFUL AGING

But lately, people are trading in the traditional funeral service for a celebration of life in which friends and family not only mourn the deceased, but also remember them joyfully.

Modern-day funerals are less about religion and more about the individual who has passed, says Torre Ahlberg, operations manager at Ahlberg Funeral Chapel.

“Today, it’s about personalization, not just the traditional service,” he says.

Traditional funerals included hymns, a few words from a minister or other religious leader, and some scripture readings. In contemporary funerals, hymns are replaced with the deceased’s favorite tunes and scripture readings are replaced with nostalgic anecdotes from friends and family.

“People include pictures of the person, slideshows, music they liked to listen to,” Ahlberg says.

“People speak and share stories and remembrances. It’s a focus on celebrating the life, not so much October 7, 2018

the religious aspect.”

The central difference between a traditional funeral service and a celebration of life is personalization. Photographs and video are a simple and popular way to personalize a service, but the options are endless. Ahlberg Funeral Chapel will not only download photos and music, but they can also organize military honors, dove releases, and balloon launches.

“We meet with [the family] and figure out what they’d like to do and offer ideas on how we can make that happen,” says Ahlberg.

Keepsakes are also an effective way to personalize a celebration of life. If the deceased was an avid hiker, perhaps display his favorite pair of hiking boots or poles. The reception presents another opportunity for personalization, where one can serve the individual’s favorite drinks or foods.

While these celebrations will always represent a farewell, and therefore some sadness, there is joy to be had in remembering a loved one through a personalized memorial service.

whether you do inpatient, outpatient or in-home rehab. Some of it is within your control, but a lot of it isn’t.

The Life Care Center of Longmont offers both inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation treatments.

A lot of the choice comes down to Medicare or the insurance carrier, said Joleen McGee, admissions director. Medicare often requires a 3-day medical stay at the hospital after surgery to be eligible for an inpatient rehab stay.

“It has to be shown that there’s a skilled need that can’t be met at home with home health,” she said. “You have to prove that there’s a skilled need that can be met at a facility.” She added that some surgeries like orthopedic don’t get a 3-night qualifying stay.

Center doesn’t offer at-home rehab. McGee advised that if you don’t qualify for inpatient rehab, that you should have a plan “B” or alternate plan for care after surgery. Patients are given informative education at the hospital before surgery so they can come up with a plan. They will usually know at that time if the surgery will qualify them for inpatient or outpatient care.

McGee said it’s important to tour the facility you’re looking at staying in, and make sure it’s part of your insurance network. Make sure you’re comfortable with the staff and how they do therapy.

Look at the schedule and the amenities each facility offers.

to three hours a day as necessary.

They have two physicians on staff to address pain control, labs or whatever is needed. The center also assists with transportation to follow-up doctor appointments.

They have private and semi-private rooms and 25 therapists on staff.

Most people are home within three to four weeks, although the length of stay depends on the surgery.

Accel at Longmont offers physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy, as well as services for people who need IV antibiotics or wound vacuum.

Debby Burnstein, marketing director, said that an assessment is done at the hospital to decide on the type of rehab.

A doctor at the hospital will give a referral of whether you should go home or come to inpatient rehab. “When you go home, it’s a three day therapy. You don’t have your nurses making sure you’re good,” Burnstein said. “They’ll give the families the choice. People can always make the choice (it often depends on cost). That’s when we come in and talk to the families.”

At their facility, once the patient has reached “baseline” or the most healed they will be through therapy, they are ready to go home.

McGee said that baselines depend on the surgery. For a knee replacement, baseline is how you were before surgery. For a stroke, that baseline might be a little different and you go as far as you can. Accel at Longmont works with outside organizations that can provide at home rehabilitation.

Ideally, the therapists do a week of physical therapy and a week of occupational therapy. If home health is needed, that might be a 3-day therapy program.

“We are the new facility in town (in Longmont),” Burnstein said.

It is beautiful but it’s really the team inside of it. Our administrator, Carly Bader, cares about everybody - employees, patients, families - she knows how to build a team.”

The Northern Colorado Rehabilitation Hospital also offers inpatient and outpatient rehab.

They work with an extensive list of home health providers for at-home rehabilitation as needed.

Common surgery patients the hospital sees include hip and knee, hip fracture, ankle fracture, spine surgery, multiple fracture and shoulder surgery, according to Debora Campbell, director of therapy operations.

Like the other facilities, Campbell advises that patients should understand their insurance policies and the services offered. Various plans with Medicare will require a 3-day hospital stay but not all. The center will verify coverage and let the patient know before admitting them. Choices of inpatient or outpatient depend heavily on the insurance plan.

The rehab hospital offers several forms of therapy plus pharmacy, respiratory therapy and dieticians.

Services provided are individualized to the specific patient needs to help them return as quickly as they can to their homes. Case managers help with continued care as needed.

Campbell said that the hospital is proud to hold a certificate in stroke rehabilitation and clinics with specialty training in neurological rehab. They also offer speech therapy, which not all facilities are able to do.

Campbell said that inpatient services are necessary if the patient cannot function safely at home. If the patient can’t move around the house, use the toilet, get dressed, take a shower or leave the house, they should receive inpatient rehabilitation. The goal of inpatient care is to improve safety and function, which also includes giving a caregiver training on home modifications and adapted equipment.

They offer continuous care from inpatient to outpatient care, and have a large referral base for home health services to get each patient functioning as well as they can be.

How to properly store summer clothes to avoid a pest infestation (BPT) - As colder weather approaches, you may decide to store some of your summer clothes.

However, when warmer temperatures roll around again, you might not find those shorts and tank tops exactly as you left them. Certain insects that feed on fabrics and textiles can leave your carefully stored clothing damaged and full of holes.

But don’t despair! Your shirts aren’t necessarily doomed. With some tips from Terminix, you can learn what kinds of bugs damage fabric and how you can best protect your outfits in storage.

Which insects eat clothes?

When you picture the kind of bug that finds its way into a closet and ruins your clothing, you probably think of a moth. The larvae of clothes moths feed on everything from synthetic fabrics to upholstery to stray pet or human hair.

Additionally, be sure to repair torn screens and block any cracks under your doors to prevent clothes moths from entering.

Another key to keeping your stored clothes bug-free is to clean them before packing them away.

Stains can attract hungry pests, so be sure to remove any obvious ones such as food or oil before boxing things up. Make sure to keep the area where you’re storing your clothing as clean as possible as well. HAZARD 4: Selecting a plan without checking the stars

Remember to check each plan’s Star Ratings before you make your choice. The plans are ranked from one to five stars based on criteria set by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, such as customer service and quality of care offered to a plan’s members.

(BPT) - Some experts estimate that as many as 80 percent of Medicare beneficiaries choose to stay in a Medicare prescription drug plan (“Part D plan”) that doesn’t match their needs. Studies show that these individuals could benefit from cost savings and better coverage by taking the time to select a different Part D plan. If you decide to evaluate your Part D coverage, here are some common hazards to avoid along the way to finding the plan that’s best for you.

HAZARD 1: Getting distracted by premiums

Cost may be the determining factor in many of your purchases. However, when shopping for a Medicare prescription drug plan, cost, or specifically the plan’s monthly premium, should be only one of the factors to consider. If you’re a person who takes only one or two prescription drugs, you may opt for a lower-premium Part D plan. However, if you take three or more medications, you may need more comprehensive coverage, which may result in your considering a higherpremium plan. HAZARD 2: Failing to check if or how your drugs are covered

Your Medicare Part D plan will include a list of covered drugs called a formulary. HAZARD 3: Forgetting to look for a plan that offers preferred pharmacies

Plans that provide a preferred pharmacy network offer cost savings to members. Checking the local preferred retail pharmacies within the plan’s network that you’re considering may offer you the greatest retail pharmacy savings. Plans that offer mail delivery in their preferred network for medications you use regularly provide the convenience of having them delivered right to your door. Mail delivery may offer more savings than what you would get at a preferred retail pharmacy.

HAZARD 5: Detouring from your roadmap

By staying informed and doing your research early, you can prepare and follow a roadmap to help you reach the desired destination: the Medicare Part D plan that’s right for you.

Avoiding detours along the road could save you money on next year’s plan, which will help you remain on the medications you use by providing coverage that best meets your needs.

Tips for talking about Alzheimer’s with a family member (BPT) - It’s a conversation no family wants to have, but one that can be vitally important - talking to a loved one about memory loss or cognitive decline.

Mary Foss of Eagan, Minnesota, said she knew it was time to broach this sensitive topic with her husband Darrell when she noticed he was having difficulty doing the home improvement projects he had enjoyed all his life.

“Darrell would spend hours building and fixing things around the house - it was his hobby,” Mary said. “But it got to point where he was having trouble doing even routine tasks. He would get frustrated and soon began doing less and less. I knew something was wrong, but dismissed it for a while.”

As Darrell’s retreat from activities grew, so did Mary’s concern. Eventually, Mary and the couple’s adult daughter, Michele, decided to share their concerns.

“We just told him that something is not right and you need to see a doctor and figure out what it is,” Foss said. “I thought maybe he had a mini-stroke or a brain tumor. We were shocked when the diagnosis came back as mild cognitive impairment, possibly Alzheimer’s.”

The Fosses’ story is not uncommon.

Talking about memory or cognition problems can be daunting for many families. Denial, fear and difficulty initiating conversations about this sensitive subject are common barriers.

“Alzheimer’s disease is challenging, but talking about it doesn’t have to be,” said Ruth Drew, director of Information and Support Services at the Alzheimer’s Association. “Family members are typically the first to notice when something is not quite right and it’s important to discuss these concerns and follow up with your doctor.”

(BPT) - Overwhelmingly, people say that they want to stay independent in their own home as they age. One way to ensure they can is to make changes to reduce their chances of falling. Because, while one in four older adults falls each year, there are ways to be prepared for the changes of aging in order to prevent falls.

“The misconception is that falls are a normal part of aging, but this is untrue,” says Kathleen Cameron, senior director at the National Council on Aging’s Center for Healthy Aging. “Just because you’re getting older doesn’t mean you’ll inevitably fall at some point. There are proven ways to prevent falls, so older adults can live healthy, safely and independently.”

Every 11 seconds an older adult is seen in an emergency room for a fall-related injury, reports the National Council on Aging.

STEP 1. Find a good balance and exercise program

SKIN CARE TIPS for Seniors

Even during dry Colorado winters or hot Colorado summer days, it is possible to keep skin moist and healthy. Dr. Michael Raisch, MD, Mohs Surgeon and Dermatologist at Dermatology of the Rockies and Dr. Sarah Bair, MD, Dermatologist and owner of Crossroads Dermatology, both weighed in with six tips on how seniors can sustain happy skin.

Make a baseline appointment, with follow up appointments

Scheduling a baseline skin exam with a dermatologist is an important place to start. “This gives us the opportunity to educate patients on things to look for and provide guidance on follow up recommendations based on their specific skin concerns,” Bair said. At that appointment, be sure to ask lots of questions. “It really shows that the patient is engaged,” Raisch said. “I never want a patient feels like the doctor is too busy for a question. I want someone to walk out of my office feeling completely reassured.

They should just ask. That’s one of our main jobs as physicians is to provide counseling as well as medical treatment.”

However, if someone has a family history with skin problems or skin cancer, “that makes it more likely that you will develop similar problems,” Raisch said.

“So, if you have a father and a brother who have melanoma, that’s a strong indication that you should be checked more regu26 SUCCESSFUL AGING

for new growths or painful and bleeding skin spots. “One thing that I find that is a helpful marker is a sore that just won’t heal after a month,” Raisch said. “If you have a spot where you rub your nose and there is blood on the towel and it keeps on happening, that is something that should be checked out.”

Watch out for signs of skin cancer

Both Bair and Raisch see a lot of skin cancer cases in their practices.

“Coloradans … tend to spend lots of time in our intense sun … As people age, they have had more cumulative sun exposure and we can start to see the development of skin cancers and pre-cancers,” Bair said.

Raisch pointed out that skin cancer is more common in older people, and that “about 50 percent of people with light skin will have skin cancer in the course of their lifetime,” he said. Melanoma, the more aggressive type of cancer, is not as common. Nonmelanoma skin cancer, such as basal or squamous cell, will show up more often.

Raisch recommends following

the ABCDE check when looking out for melanoma skin growths: A – Asymmetry - If skin spots are not even on both sides of the circle, this could be a cause for concern B – Border – The spots should have distinct borders. Things that are really jagged or have indistinct borders are more concerning C – Color – The skin patch should not have more than one or two colors. Having a mole that is a little darker in the center but is relatively the same shade is not worrisome. But if you have pink, brown, black and grey altogether, that is an irregular type of pattern and raises concerns D – Diameter – Skin spots smaller than a pencil eraser in size are generally benign. Larger than that, and the skin spot should be checked out E – Evolution – If something starts to grow or change rapidly, or if a new skin spot of growth occurs, get it checked out. Something that might look irregular but has been on the body for several years is probably fine For non-melanoma skin cancer, Raisch said that he mainly looks

Consider Colorado’s high-altitude year round

Colorado’s high altitude does significantly impact skin, both doctors said. Because more UV light is getting through the atmosphere in Colorado, people need to be extra cautious when playing in the great outdoors. To protect skin from the sun, Bair recommends an SPF 30 or higher daily on the face. “For women, this is easy as its often in our facial moisturizers. Wearing a wide brimmed hat and sun protective clothing is [also] very helpful,” she said.

Raisch also recommends a baseline daily moisturizer.

“Thankfully we live in CO where a lot of our seniors are very active,” he said. “When you are doing your daily life, use a moisturizer with sunscreen in the morning after you do your morning bathroom routine. I generally reserve sunscreens that are waterproof for when people are doing outdoor activities. The base coat of sunscreen in the morning goes a long way. And then try to wear protective clothing and sunglasses. I always leave a hat in my car and in my wife’s car …

Also, if you are able to leave some sunscreen in the car, it will be there for reapplication.”

Ward off dry skin, especially in the winter

Because Colorado is a dry environment, weather can greatly impact skin, especially in the winter.

“As we age, the skin can dry out considerably … [and] our skin produces less moisture and even people who have never used moisturizer have to start,” Bair said.

“People who started out dry need

to begin to use a thicker moisturizer and use it more often. We also focus on using very mild soaps and taking short, cool showers.”

“There’s something called winter’s itch for a rash that happens on the lower leg … people will come in with a terrible itch on their leg, and the answer is moisturizer,” Raisch said. “Often times it can be exacerbated by using strong soaps and detergents; these products remove moisture. The other common area that people will get dry, cracked and fissured skin is on the palms of the hand.

Our climate in Colorado makes that worse.”

Raisch also recommends that people use mild cleanser soaps on itchy winter eczema skin. “Right after the shower, pat your skin dry and while it is still soft and supple five minutes after the shower, put on a good coat of moisturizer,” he said. “The vast majority [of people] will be cured if they just … use a mild cleanser and

then a moisturizer right after the shower.”

Think about nutrition and supplements for supporting skin health

Diet can have a great impact on skin health. “Eating a healthy diet is great for your skin,” Bair said.

“This includes plenty of water.

Sugary foods are pro-inflammatory, which can create problems internally but can also exacerbate psoriasis and acne (which are inflammatory conditions). For people who have had a nonmelanoma skin cancer (basal or squamous cell) taking niacinamide 500mg twice daily may decrease your risk of getting subsequent cancers. Phytoceramide supplements can help with skin hydration and elasticity.”

Sometimes Bair will prescribe chemo creams as a prevention plan, or support seniors in procedures to reverse some of the

impacts of gaining on skin.

“While these [creams can be] miserable to use by causing redness and irritation while doing the treatment, when finished, the skin often has a much smoother appearance,” Bair said. “Many seniors seek treatments with neuromodulators, such as Botox, Dysport or Xeomin, to soften expression lines and dermal fillers to restore lost volume. My goal is to provide a very natural look by restoring volume in areas where it is naturally lost with age.”

It’s not too late to start protecting your skin now

“I often hear people say that they ‘ruined’ their skin as a young person by getting too much sun,” Bair said. “While it is true that abuse of the sun as a young person can cause significant damage, it’s never too late to start protecting yourself from the sun.”

AARP FOUNDATION SURVEY:

Loneliness numbers rise among adults age 45 and older; neighborhood connections key to countering social isolation

New survey finds one in three U.S. adults age 45 and older are lonely and examines risk factors for loneliness WASHINGTON, DC—A new survey released today by AARP Foundation, “Loneliness and Social Connections: A National Survey of Adults 45 and Older,” finds that 1 in 3 U.S. adults age 45 and older are lonely. While the percentage is unchanged from a previous loneliness study conducted by AARP Research in 2010, approximately five million more midlife and older adults are lonely due to growth in this age group among the population.

The survey used the UCLA loneliness scale, which includes 20 items designed to assess subjective feelings of loneliness, as the primary measure of loneliness.

Over the past several years, both loneliness and isolation have emerged as public health issues that could have serious implications for quality of life and the U.S. economy if not properly addressed.

“The increase in the number 28 SUCCESSFUL AGING

of lonely adults 45 and over is significant. Loneliness, especially as it relates to social isolation factors, has real consequences for people’s health,” said Lisa Marsh Ryerson, president of AARP Foundation.

“Studies show that isolation and loneliness are as bad for health as obesity or smoking. This survey’s results send a clear signal that we need to direct more attention and resources to this complex and growing public health issue.”

Although social isolation and loneliness are related, they are distinct and can occur independent of one another. Social isolation is objective, with measurable factors like the size of one’s social network, while loneliness is more personal and subjective — it’s how people perceive their experience and whether they feel they lack the connections, companionship or sense of belonging that humans need to thrive. Through this survey, the Foundation aimed to improve society’s understanding of loneliness and its relationship to the factors of social isolation.

Among other findings, the survey identified several risk factors and predictors of loneliness.

Notably, populations at increased risk for chronic loneliness include people with low income (less than $25,000 per year), unpaid caregivers, and those who self-identify as LGBTQ. Overall, the survey found that increased social connections can reduce social isolation and loneliness. In particular, it revealed a clear relationship between loneliness among midlife and older adults and their connections with their neighbors — which is a new area of focus in 2018. Thirty-three percent of midlife and older adults who have spoken to their neighbors are lonely, compared with 61 percent who have never spoken to

a neighbor.

“Connecting with our neighbors is about more than goodwill; it’s also about good health,” said Ryerson. “An act as simple as saying hello and striking up a conversation with your neighbor can make a huge difference in helping someone who is lonely or isolated feel more connected to their community.”

The study also measured the prevalence of loneliness across demographic groups and explored the relationship between loneliness and life experiences, social connections, health and technology.

Key findings include: •Several populations, including unpaid caregivers, low-income individuals, and those who self-identify as LGBTQ, are at increased risk for chronic loneliness.

•Among midlife and older adults earning less than $25,000 per year, one in two are likely to be lonely.

•Caregivers are eight percentage points more likely to be lonely than non-caregivers.

•Those who identify as LGBTQ are 14 percentage points more likely to be lonely than nonLGBTQ individuals (49 percent compared to 35 percent).

• The size of one’s social network and being physically isolated are the top predictors of loneliness, but depression, urbanicity, anxiety, overall health, and age are also contributing factors.

• The ways in which older adults cope with loneliness vary depending on how frequently they feel lonely. Chronically lonely adults are more likely to turn to isolated activities to cope, such as watching television or surfing the internet, while those who are

not chronically lonely are more likely to talk with a friend or go out with family when feelings of loneliness do occur.

• Fewer than 20 percent of people have discussed feelings of loneliness with their health care provider.

The study also explored how technology can reduce loneliness and social isolation, but acknowledged that it is not a substitute for human interaction. Though technology is a tool that can help bring people together when they cannot connect in person, its use does not significantly reduce loneliness.

Nevertheless, an opportunity exists to educate people about online activities, tools and applications that can facilitate staying in touch with others, with lonely people likely to have a greater incentive to learn how to use them.

“Loneliness and Social Connections: A National Survey of Adults 45 and Older,” which was prepared

by AARP Research, fielded by GfK Custom Research and funded

by Consumer Cellular and AARP Foundation, represents an updating of an AARP Research survey conducted in 2010. Since that time, the field has evolved and AARP Foundation’s focus has expanded to include social isolation.

You could save a life - and it could be your own (BPT) - Every 40 seconds, someone in the U.S. has some type of stroke. Even though stroke is a leading cause of disability in America, it is largely preventable and treatable. As May is American Stroke Month, it’s the perfect time to brush up on the facts to stay as healthy as possible.

Bayer Aspirin is a national sponsor of the American Stroke Association’s Together To End Stroke initiative, which aims to educate and empower people to make simple lifestyle changes to reduce the risk of another stroke. Arming people with information about stroke is one step in achieving this goal.

One in every four clot-related (ischemic) strokes happens after a prior stroke. Fortunately, up to 80 percent of recurrent clot-related (ischemic) strokes can be prevented with the right steps.

Here are some stroke mythbusters that could not only help save your life but also help save the life of someone you love.

MYTH: Strokes won’t happen to me

Clot-related (ischemic) strokes are the most common type of stroke, accounting for 87 percent of all cases. They happen when a blockage interrupts the flow of blood to the brain. Every year, nearly 800,000 people in the U.S. have a stroke, which is actually the same as the annual number of heart attacks; that’s why managing your risks is so important.

MYTH: Men and women have the same risks for stroke.

More women than men have some type of stroke each year. A stroke can happen to a woman at almost any age - even to women in their 20s. This year alone, more than 100,000 U.S. women under 65 will suffer some kind of stroke.

Most women don’t realize that

the medical regimen they receive for other conditions can increase the risk of stroke. Many of those strokes can be avoided by simply being aware of the risks and talking with your doctor to make the appropriate changes. For example, birth control pills could double the stroke risk for women compared to women who don’t take birth control pills.

MYTH: All races or ethnicities have the same risk factors.

Not all races and ethnicities have the same risk factors. The risk of stroke among African American men is actually twice as high as Caucasian men. According to the American Stroke Association, the prevalence of high blood pressure in African-Americans is the highest in the world. Not only is high blood pressure more severe in African-Americans, but it also develops earlier in life. Getting your blood pressure checked regularly is one of the easiest things you can do to manage your risk of stroke.

Prescription medications for high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes may not be enough to reduce your risk of another clot-related (ischemic) stroke. These conditions raise the risk of stroke as well as heart attack.

And while you may take prescription medications to manage these conditions, they may not be enough to protect your heart. Adding aspirin, which works differently, to your treatment plan may further help prevent another heart attack or ischemic stroke.
