olorado may have some wintry surprises yet to throw our way, but we’re setting our sights on summer! With each lengthening day, kids begin brimming to anticipation: time for relaxation, exploration, and a break from homework. That shake-up of routines doesn’t mean putting learning on hold, however. Summertime experiences abound offering safe, structured opportunities to learn and grow while developing independence and self-confidence alongside friendships and new skills.

BOULDER VALLEY SCHOOL DISTRICT LIFELONG LEARNING New for 2020! Boulder Valley School District’s (BVSD) Lifelong Learning has consolidated all technology-based summer camps into a Tech Camp Hub at Monarch High School. A newly renovated technology wing will host cutting edge camps including coding, robotics and filmmaking. Campers aged 8 to 18 will have the opportunity to build career-focused skills in their favorite subjects. Thanks to a grant from the Best Buy Foundation, one Intensive App Design camp will be free to 14 to 18 year olds focused on technology as their career path. This summer, 474 BVSD Summer Camps will run from May 26 to Aug. 17 at eleven Boulder-area locations. Shoes set the pace for summer camp

ere’s hoping this will be a summer of discovery for your child – discovering new ideas, new activities and new ways of understanding. This summer your child will stand on his or her own two feet and you want to make sure those feet are ready for all kinds of activity. There are several guidelines for camp shoes that may help your decision-making. First, the shoe has to fit the activity. Your child may need high-quality and durable water shoes, sports shoes, trail shoes and boots for riding horses. There are shoes specifically designed for dance or tennis. Second, avoid low quality material like plastic that doesn’t allow feet to breath. That can worsen sweating and create blisters. Extensive outdoor activities will keep your child hopping. Third, soles should not be hard or slick. Test to see if the soles flex when you bend them. Fourth, have the child’s foot measured, not just for length but width too. You’d be surprised how much your child’s foot has grown since the last shopping trip. Be sure your child tries on both shoes and walks around on the carpet in the store. During a long day at

camp, comfort is key. Fifth, younger children should be able to take shoes off and put them on themselves. Velcro straps and toggle shoelaces may be your little child’s best foot friend. An outstanding brand for kids’ camp is Keen, carried at Brown’s Shoe Fit in downtown Longmont.

Being able to throw the shoes or sandals into the washing machine keeps them looking fresh and ready for all summer camp activities and beyond.
