Joe Cucarola was in the U.S. Armed Forces in the European Theater during World War II. He was an Ex-Prisoner of War, fought on the Beaches of Normandy and was captured during the Battle of the Bulge, in December of 1945. Mr. Cucarola was a survivor of the infamous German death march where American GI’s were marched in the winter from Belgium, across Germany to Czechoslovakia. He is buried in Sunset Memorial Gardens.

The U.S. Small Business Administration will celebrate the accomplishments of veteran, service member and military spouse small business owners nationwide during National Veterans Small Business Week, Nov. 5-9. “National Veterans Small Business Week is another opportunity for us not only to highlight the success of our nation’s 2.5 million veteran-owned businesses, but also to recognize the areas where there is still work to be done,” SBA Administrator Linda McMahon said. “Entrepreneurship is not a solo mission. I’m proud to be a part of a network that serves the needs of our veteran and military business owners.” The SBA’s Colorado District Office will host a number of National Veterans Small Business Week events statewide. This year’s theme, Our #VetBiz Community, shines a spotlight on various
aspects of the veteran business community, ranging from aspiring to current veteran and military business owners, as well as the organizations that provide entrepreneurial training. Throughout the week, the SBA Colorado District Office, resource partners, and community organizations will host local events focused on entrepreneurial training, access to capital, federal and commercial procurement opportunities, and innovation opportunities. Many partner organizations throughout the state are offering free registrations for veterans. Most events in Colorado will highlight the topic of “Expansion and Growth” for veteran entrepreneurs, service members, Reserve and National Guard members, and military spouses, as they share their experiences during their journey in business ownership. Veterans Day event slated for Sunday
The Sterling Veterans Day celebration will be sticking to tradition this year, with the ceremony scheduled for 11 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 11 at the Columbine Park Veterans Memorial.

Working in collaboration with our government and community partners, the SBA plays an important role in supporting service members as they exit the military and become entrepreneurs. Whether you are a transitioning service member, National Guard and Reserve member, or a military spouse, the SBA is here to assist you with business training and education, access to capital and federal contracting opportunities. Over the years, I have had the privilege to talk with numerous veterans about ways they can translate their military careers to the private sector. Colorado is home to more than 410,000 veterans and many of them see entrepreneurship as a way to make a good living and support their families. Historically, veterans have been more likely to start a small business than non-veterans. Nearly 50,000 Colorado veterans have made the jump to smallbusiness ownership. In many
cases, the SBA worked in partnership with the veteran to help them find the financing and training they needed to make their dream of entrepreneurship a reality. The key to business success is knowing what to do and how to do it. The SBA’s resource partners train and assist thousands of Coloradans each year. Our training and counseling services include a Veterans Business Outreach Center, 14 Small Business Development Centers, a Women’s Business Center at the Mi Casa Resource Center in Denver, as well as a statewide volunteer network of executive mentors known as SCORE. The SBA’s Office of Veteran Business Development also has a comprehensive website with online business plans and other critical information for starting a business located at www.sba.gov/vets. One of the most successful initiatives the SBA has developed to assist transitioning military personnel is the Boots to Business pro-

gram. Boots to Business is a twostep entrepreneurial training program offered by the SBA as a training track within the Department of Defense’s Transition Assistance Program (TAP). This program has become a tremendous success at multiple military installations across Colorado. Boots to Business was so successful that we opened up a new training opportunity to veterans already in the workforce called Boots to Business Reboot. Boots to Business Reboot brings the Boots to Business curriculum off installations and into communities for veterans, members of the National Guard and Reserve, and military spouses. Veterans are integral to the growth of America’s small businesses and coming up November 5 - 9 will be the fifth annual National Veterans Small Business Week, a week set aside to honor our veteran entrepreneurs and the contributions they make to our thriving economy.
