Jan. 12, 1948 ~ Sept. 3, 2017 James R. Branam, beloved husband, son, father and grandfather passed away on Sept. 3, 2017, at the family home in Canon City. He was born on Jan. 12, 1948, in Colorado Springs to Georgiana Branam and the late Robert L Branam. He is survived by his wife Cathy, sons Christopher (Stephanie), Matthew (Kathie), and Scott. Also surviving him is his young 90 year old mother Georgiana Branam and his brother John (Lynn). Also survived by 13 grandchildren: Brittany, Cameron, Courtney, Cody, Allison, Derrick, Garrett, Trevor, Morgan, Jimmy, Chase, Adoni, Caitlyn and one great-granddaughter, Avery Contos. He also has numerous nieces and nephews. Jim loved his family with a passion. He enjoyed going fishing, camping and spending time in the outdoors. He and Cathy traveled and lived in a large RV for several years after he retired seeing the western United States and making lifelong friends. Jim was a proud Colorado Springs Firefighter Driver-Engineer retiring after serving 37 years. In 1996, he was honored to be selected Firefighter of the Year. One of the awards was a roundtrip flight anywhere in the U.S., which led to our first trip to Walt Disney World. It became his favorite vacation place. Memorial services will be Saturday, Sept. 9, 2017, at 11 a.m. at the Broadmoor Community Church at 315 Lake Ave. in Colorado Springs followed by a celebration of life at the family home.

Aug. 31, 1935 ~ Sept. 3, 2017 Donna Lee Noble, 82, of Canon City, obtained her eternal reward in Heaven September 3, 2017. She was born Aug. 31, 1935, to Doy and Lora (Hunsley) Brown in Wichita, Kan. Donna married, Larry Noble, the love of her life and spent many years traveling the world as a military wife. A resident of Fremont County since 1970, Donna owned and operated Elfinware Ceramics for many years and enjoyed casting ceramics and everything arts and crafts. Donna enjoyed being a wife and mother and spending time with her children and family. She loved camping and being outdoors. You would often hear her singing a tune and laughing, as she found humor in so many things. She also enjoyed working with computers and the many aspects of them. She is survived by her husband, of 64 years Larry; children, Donald Noble, Greg (Donna Rae) Noble, Cheryl (James) McDaniel, James (Lisa) Noble; 18 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents, sons, Kenneth and Gerald and siblings, Lucille, Doris and Barbara Jo. A Celebration of Life will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 19, at the Evangelical Free Church, 3000 E. Main Street, Canon City. Arrangements entrusted to Harwood Funeral Home. March 21, 1943 ~ Sept. 14, 2017 Donald Clyde Hammer was born on March 21, 1943, to Thomas Donald and Mary O’dell Hammer and passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Sept. 14, 2017. They moved to Colorado when he was young and he enjoyed the Colorado outdoors immensely. Don married Luann Hodge on Dec. 10, 1977. Don worked for Coors for 25 years, where he eventually retired. Don enjoyed hunting, fishing and all outdoor activities and spending time with his family. Don was preceded in death by his father, Thomas Donald, his mother, Mary Dianne, and his niece, Shaundra Schell-Murr. He is survived by his wife, Luann, daughter Wendi Nafziger and her husband Cedric; his son Craig Hammer and his wife JoAnn; his daughter Kim Puzo and her husband Mike; and his daughter Sheridon Simington and her husband TJ. His sisters Dianne Jamell and her husband Don, and Norene Lamoreaux and her husband Fred. His nephew Michael Schell, niece Kristin Jamell, Tracy Ficca and nephew Chad Jamell. Don is also survived by numerous grandchildren, Josh and Ryan Nafziger, Austin Hammer, Robert and Kyle Hatheway, Jeramy Puzo, and Caitlin and Jay Simington. He was also blessed to have two great grandchildren, April Puzo and Tyson Hammer; as well as a great granddaughter on the way, Baileigh Ann Simington. Donald Owen Vitullo Feb. 19, 1927 ~ Sept. 13, 2017 Donald Owen “Bricky” Vitullo of Florence went home to be with the Lord on Sept. 13, 2017. Don was born on Feb. 19, 1927, and was a lifelong resident of Fremont County. Don will be sadly missed by his wife of 66 years, Goldie; his daughter Kathy (Eddie) Cohen of California; daughter Debbie (Ron) Carlson of Westcliffe; two grandsons, Jon (Ginny) Biernacki, Jeff biernacki, and great-grandson Brandon, all of California. Don was preceded in death by his parents Albert “Bricky” and Olwen Vitullo, and his two brothers Wesley and Albert. Don was born and raised in Coal Creek, attended college in Gunnison, and was employed by Ideal Cement Company for 39 years. He was an active member of Florence United Methodist Church, and volunteered at Price Pioneer Museum for 20 years. He was a longtime member of IOOF Lodge #98 where he served as treasurer for 32 years. Don Enjoyed fishing and gardening. He lived and extraordinary life in a humble and loving manner, helping others in many ways. Don’s family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the doctors, nurses, and staff at St. Thomas More Hospital, Canon Lodge Care Center, and Sangre de Cristo Hospice who all cared so compassionately for Don. He fought a good fight and left his sweetheart of 40 years, Wendy (Brown) Chapman. Charlie and Wendy realized many dreams and adventures. Proceeded in death by his father, Henry L. In Loving Memory Ila Iola Firkins Matz

Jan. 20, 1918 ~ Sept. 15, 2017 Ila Iola Firkins Matz passed away peacefully at Hildebrand Care Center on September 15, 2017, just four months short of her 100th birthday. Ila was born to Willis and Mary Ann Firkins on a cold and snowy night at home Jan. 20, 1918, at the corner of Cherry and Raynolds in Cañon City. Dr. Webb was in attendance. She was a sickly baby and was not expected to live long. She fooled everyone, outliving them all. Ila had very fond memories of growing up with four sisters and five brothers. The family lived “on the plains”, six miles south of Calhan for several years during the depression. They were poor but did not know it; they had everything that counted. Without toys, they made their own fun. She remembered that in addition to helping out in the house, she hoed pinto beans in very long rows and milked six of their 25 cows before and after school. During their stay in Calhan, there were several bad snow storms and blizzards, where her dad would put a wire from the house to the barns, pig pens, and outhouse so they would not get lost taking care of the animals. Ila met her future husband, Emil Raymond “Ray” Matz, at a very young age when he worked on the farm for her dad in Calhan. They married on January 21, 1936, one day after her 18th birthday. They left immediately for Wisconsin to work on Ray’s uncle’s farm. Ila left believing she would never see her family again. A couple years later, they returned, never to leave again. They were happily married for 53 years, until Ray passed away on Jan. 28, 1989. Ila attended grade school in Calhan, middle and high school in Cañon City. For much of her adult life, she was a caregiver, working for Grace Greene, first taking care of Grace’s mother, and eventually caring for Grace for more than 15 years. Ila was a great cook and loved trying new recipes and making special deserts. She and her sister, Opal, would spend many days during the summer making and freezing dozens of Petit Fours for the Christmas Bazaar. At a young age, she also helped her mother in cooking for the family. She loved telling how long it took to make enough pancakes for her brothers because they could eat so many. Ila enjoyed all kinds of crafts and only had to look at something at a craft fair or in a magazine to be able to recreate it. She spent many hours crocheting. Her passion later in life was china painting and her family has many treasured pieces of her artistry. Growing up in the country, she knew the names of every flower, tree and bird. She showed her love of flowers, especially pink roses, in her china painting. Ila is survived by her son, Robert Raymond Matz (Patricia Javernick), of Cañon City; grandchildren, Suzanne Lassen (Gary), of Petaluma, California, Richard Matz (Jeanna), of Santa Rosa, California, Mark Tursick, of Cañon City, Angela Brady (Dean), of Cañon City, Kathy Hedlun, of Fruita, Colorado, Diane Hall, of Reno, Nevada; greatgrandchildren, Drew Lassen, of Monterey, California, Elsa Tursick, of Cañon City, William Tursick, of Cañon City, Robert Richard Matz, of Santa Rosa, California, Adam Matz, of Santa Rosa, California, Jessica Hedlun, of Fruita, Colorado, and Laura Hedlun, of Fruita, Colorado. Also surviving is her sister-in-law, Louise Firkins, along with numerous nieces, nephews and extended family. Ila was preceded in death by her daughter, Elsa Marie Serve; sisters, Zoetta Firkins, Ruth Foraker, Norma Swart, Opal Bolenbaugh; brothers, Burdett, Norrell, Elvin, Walter, Oliver; granddaughters, Loraine Tursick, Yvonne Stinson; great-grandsons, Bram Stinson and Matthew Stinson. Services will be at the First United Methodist Church where Ila was an active member for over 84 years, frequently helping out with funeral dinners and the Christmas Bazar. Dec. 21, 1989 ~ Sept. 8, 2017 Bennett John Roesch, 27, of Santa Cruz, Calif., passed away on Sept. 8, 2017, due to a head injury following a fall. Bennett was born to Ben and Roesch pic Cecelia (Kuisle) Roesch in Colorado Springs on Dec. 21, 1989. From the time he was 9 months old, Bennett loved to climb anything that was available to him. His love of nature took him on many walks, hikes, bike rides and camping trips from the mountains and forests of his beloved “Beauty Land” in Colorado to the beaches and rainforests of Puerto Rico, where he spent his fifth-grade year learning Spanish, swimming in the ocean and digging “big holes” in his beachside backyard. Bennett loved to entertain people, especially kids, with his incredible talents for juggling and spinning fire, which he joyfully taught to anyone who was willing to learn. He spent his River Dell High School years in New Jersey and often traveled to New York City to practice juggling with world-class talents, even performing in an off-off Broadway show and many International Jugglers’ Association Festivals. UC Santa Cruz drew Bennett to Santa Cruz, where he began his next adventure. His contagious love of people, encyclopedic knowledge of information technology and willingness to patiently teach anyone who wanted to learn helped him land his “dream job” as a computer programmer at NextSpace. There, he had the opportunity to offer his free-spirited, kind, loving and caring personality to a community that welcomed and appreciated him. A truly unique creative personality, Bennett brought an original perspective to every project he was involved with. His enthusiasm, sense of humor, warmth and infectious ever-present smile, enabled him to forge friendships with people of all ages and from all walks of life. Bennett was a catalyst for creativity and collaboration among his friends. He loved to use games to help bring people together, inventing around a dozen games in his own idiosyncratic style, such as “Sentence, Picture, Sentence.” Caught up in his own excitement, he would sometimes use these games to connect to complete strangers walking down the street, bringing smiles, laughs and interesting, impromptu conversations from many (and strange looks from some!). He loved dancing and dressing up and was an outspoken proponent of “Fancy Fridays.” He was an avid reader and always had “the right book” to give to someone who he thought would benefit from reading it. He thrived on learning new things and new ideas, and could never understand why others weren’t as eager to learn as he was. In the wake of his death, many, many wonderful people have expressed that Bennett brought a brightness into their lives and he facilitated get-togethers where he changed the way they looked at the world, their relationships and their work in life. He challenged each of us to do more, think bigger, be better, love more and “make cool stuff.” He burned brightly and touched the hearts and minds of many who knew him no matter how short or long. May his light and love be carried forward in each person whose life he touched. He is survived by his parents, Ben and Cecelia (Kuisle) Roesch, Castle Rock; his sisters, Jennifer (Dr. Ryan) Riggs and Tracy (Dr. Nathan) Wilkes; his nieces and nephew, Kylee Riggs, Sophie and Mason Wilkes, 20 aunts and uncles, about a hundred cousins and countless friends who loved him. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 22, at Harwood Chapel, 516 N. 10th Cañon City, with a celebration of life to follow. His Funeral Mass will be officiated by Fr. Gary Kennedy on Saturday, Sept. 23 at 10:30 a.m., at St. Anthony Chapel at St. Michaels Catholic Church, 1029 College Ave, Cañon City, CO 81212. Nov. 29, 1932 ~ Sept. 13, 2017 Peggy J. Zupan passed away peacefully in her home with family and special caregivers at her side, after a courageous battle with Parkinson’s disease. Peggy was born to Frank and Nona (Day) Bradley on November 29, 1932, in Wellington Texas. She moved to Fremont County shortly after birth, where she lived most of her life. She was preceded in death by her father, Frank Bradley, her mother, Nona Adams, her step-father Lloyd Adams, step-brother Chuck Adams, and numerous other aunts, uncles, cousins, mothers and fathers-in-law, brothers and sisters-in-law, all of whom she cherished. Peggy was married to her beloved husband, Joseph A. Zupan on June 23, 1951, who preceded her in death in 2013. She is survived by her sons, Joseph, of Taos, New Mexico, Steven (Terry), and David (Elizabeth), both of Pueblo; brother, Merle “Brad” Bradley; step-brother, Dean Adams; sister-in-law, Linda Zupan; numerous nieces and nephews, including Charles Zupan and Michelle Zupan, who helped Peggy and Joe immensely over the years, all of whom she loved dearly. She is also survived by three grandchildren, Paul (Tracy) Ray, Marc (Katie) Zupan, Joshua Zupan; seven greatgrandchildren, all whom she loved dearly and was so very proud of. JoEllen (Rex) Love, her very special cousin and friend, also survives. Peggy graduated from Cañon City High School in the class of 1950, and worked at McKinley Elementary School for 25 years, retiring in 1992. Her work there was treasured by the thousands of children whom Peggy loved and cared for as their loving school librarian. She loved every child that came through her library and each one of them meant so much to her. She was the kind of person who was so richly blessed with an ability to connect with and care for children. Her influence on these children was truly special. Peggy was actively involved in the Epsilon Sigma Alpha sorority, a past member of the Fremont County Library Board, PTO President, and enjoyed her participation in the Knitting Club for many years. Special thanks to all of Peggy’s personal caregivers, and to all of the wonderful staff at Sangre de Cristo Hospice. She loved them all very much. The care she received from all of these wonderful people was a shining example of the love and care that she displayed to so many throughout her life. June 26, 1916 ~ Sept. 19, 2017 Evelyn Margaret Capps passed away Sept. 19, 2017, at the age of 101 years. She was born June 26, 1916 in Scribner, Nebraska to Fred and Louise Marx. In her young adult life, she left Scribner by train, moving to Burlington, Colorado to be closer to her sister. She found employment with Mountain Bell Telephone and Telegraph Company and met her future husband, Robert A. Capps. They were married in Burlington, Colorado on June 4, 1950 at the home of Alfred and Louise Lowe. In 1952, they moved to Colorado Springs, where they welcomed their son, Robert Keith. In late 1952, they transferred to Cañon City, where their daughters, Roberta Kay and Ronda Karel were born. Evelyn spent 25 years working as a switchboard operator before retiring in December 1971. Evelyn enjoyed spending time with family, along with fishing, reading, crocheting, embroidering, and cameo painting. She also enjoyed traveling and visited such places as the Bahamas, Hawaii, and the Seattle World Fair, among many other destinations. She attended the First United Methodist Church where she was a longtime member. She is survived by her children, Keith (Carol) Capps, of Cañon City, Kay (Anthony) Madone of Salida, Karel (David) Reis, of Westcliffe; six grandchildren, Shannon, Shane, Jason, Gina, Lisa, Christopher and 12 great-grandchildren. Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Louise; husband, Robert; sisters, Paula, Irma, and Louise. Funeral service, 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 25, Holt Family Chapel of the Garden, Pastor Eric Feuerstein officiating with music by soloist, Jeff Lamborn and organist, Julie Wadligh. Interment to follow at Lakeside Cemetery. Oct. 19, 1930 ~ Sept. 18, 2017 Arthur Marrell Ormond, 86, of Cañon City, passed away Sept. 18, 2017 at Bruce McCandless State Veterans’ Nursing Home, in Florence. He was born October 19, 1930 in Boulder, Utah to Glen and Ruby (Alvey) Ormond. Arthur was very active with the Back Country Horseman’s Club, where he was a board member. He also competed in team penning for over 5 years. His horse named Bucky was his faithful partner for many years. In addition to being a cowboy, Arthur enjoyed hunting, fishing, and being outdoors. He especially loved his dog, Katie and cat, Fluffy. He is survived by his loving wife of 28 years, Paula Ormond; children, Carol (Dean) Allred, Gary (Angela) Ormond, Lisa (Mark) Turner; six grandchildren; numerous extended family members and many friends, including David Bachman and Chuck Mallow, who are honorary pallbearers for Mr. Ormond’s service. Arthur was preceded in death by his first wife, Helen, in 1988; both parents and brother, Orville. May 7, 1935 ~ Sept.16, 2017 Shirley L. Sasser, 82, of Cañon City, went to be with her Lord and Savior Sept. 16, 2017. She was born May 7, 1935 in Salida to Vernon and Lucille (Paquette) Lyons. On Sept. 2, 1951, Shirley was united in marriage to Robert Sasser, in Raton, New Mexico. Shirley was a homemaker for most of her life but also spent time working as a bookkeeper for Bob Sasser Trucking and later for the Cañon City Daily Record. She enjoyed crafting and being creative, but above all else, Shirley loved being involved in her family’s lives, especially her beloved grandchildren. She is survived by her children, Cheryl (Jim) Potter, Garilyn (Tom) Adamic, Roger (Tammy) Sasser; grandchildren, Kristy Adamic, Amy (Jimmy) Roberts, Jason Adamic, Robert (Kelsey) Sasser, Brianna Sasser, DiAndrea (Chad) Gould, Shea Sasser; ten great-grandchildren; and brother, Gary (Helen) Lyons. Skyline Theater closes its doors Skyline Theater has closed its doors as a movie theater, but its owners plan to offer some community activities involving non-digital movies until it sells. The 99-year-old singlescreen theater located at 606 Main St. hasn’t been self-sustaining, which has forced owners Karen and Steve Nothdurft to make some difficult decisions. “We didn’t make this decision lightly, that’s for sure,” said Linda Epperson, Karen’s sister, who books the films and handles day-to-day operations. “It was with a heavy heart that we decided to close the doors of the theater.” Financially, it made sense to combine Skyline Theater and 4 Mile Cinemas, she said. “It was either close one, or they were all going to go,” Epperson said. “We are providing this for the community, but it’s a hard business. You don’t make a lot of money.” Until it sells, Epperson said the theater may offer

some movies using a “super-high-definition” projector, and an old-time movie festival is slated for later this year. The theater is listed for sale with an asking price of $299,000. The downstairs seats about 250 people, and there is room in the balcony for more seating.

(Carie Canterbury / Daily Record) “If it doesn’t sell, then that’s when we are going to have to kick around the idea of stepping in and maybe turning it into a music venue or performing arts center,” Epperson said. Three people have looked at the venue since it was

listed just a couple weeks ago, Epperson said. She said there have been several nights when 10 or fewer people have attended a movie at Skyline Theater, and the summer was not good. “We were supposed to have a great summer, but it was the worst summer in 10 years in the movie industry,” Epperson said. “It was the worst August in over 20 years in the movie industry, so that didn’t help at all. There are a lot of theaters that are hurting right now.” Epperson said Redbox, Hulu, Netflix and livestreaming capabilities offer movies right at people’s fingertips, and theaters just don’t get large crowds like they used to.

What also hurt business was if the theater didn’t get a movie on time, people drove out of town to see it, and by the time it did show in Cañon City, crowds were sparse. Some people have suggested the theater offer kids’ movies

during the day and new releases in the evenings, however, when booking new movies, theaters are contracted to hold that movie for two to four weeks and they are prohibited from running another movie with it. “As much as we’d like to run old-time movies and kids’ movies, you still have to pay for every title you get,” Epperson said. “You have to pay either a flat fee or ticket percentage sales. If you’re running a brand new movie (under contract), you can’t put another movie with it, so you’re stuck with an R-rated movie with a matinee with four people showing up.” Drive-ins and dollar theaters have different regulations, but Skyline was considered a first-run movie theater. Skyline’s digital projector has been moved to 4 Mile Cinemas at 127 Justice Center Road, which now will offer three screens as early as Friday. The community

supported a kickstarter program in September 2013 to help raise funds for Skyline Theater’s new digital projector and in turn the donors received posters, movie passes and private showings. “We want people to know that projector is not being sold, it’s not going to waste, it’s moving to the cinema,” Epperson said. Moving and setting up the projector, getting a new sound rack and screen, and opening the auditorium at 4 Mile Cinemas has cost about $11,000. “We have three years left on the lease, we will see how it goes having three (screens) if we end up staying,” Epperson said. “It’s still a lot of expense — it’s still a big lease and high utilities. It costs a lot to own that business, but we think it will do well, especially adding the third screen out there.” 4 Mile Cinemas, formerly Creekside Cinema, was owned by Karen Nothdurft’s late mother, Kate Voss, and step-

father, Roy Voss. It closed in the summer of 2013 when it faced high overhead and the cost of digital conversion. Skyline Theater also was closed for a while that year, leaving the town without a movie theater for a month because of high costs. The Nothdurfts re-signed a lease to re-open 4 Mile Cinemas in March 2016 and opened two of the four auditoriums in the building, and they purchased two $50,000 projectors. The owners have fulltime employment outside the theater business, but Epperson said they are happy that 4 Mile Cinemas will be able to stay open and continue to offer first-run movies to the community. “Almost Persuaded?” “If you should die tonight, would you go to heaven?” Last week was for those who might answer, “I’m not sure.” Today’s thoughts are for those who are pretty sure they would not make it to heaven. Most folks know what they need to do to get right with God: a way of life that needs changing or sins that need repenting of. It’s not so much that one doesn’t know what he needs to do, but more that he isn’t doing what he knows he needs to do! In Acts we read of a man named Felix, governor of Caesarea. When Paul was sent there under protective custody, Felix and his wife “sent for Paul and heard him speak about his faith in Christ. As Paul spoke of righteousness, self-control and the judgment to come, Felix became frightened and said, “Go away for now, when I find time I will summon you” (Acts 24:24-25). Two years later Paul was still in prison and Felix was still unsaved. Then a king named Agrippa heard about Paul and wanted to hear him. After recounting his conversion, Paul reminded the king that most everyone knew about Jesus. He asked, “King Agrippa, do you believe the prophets? I know you do.” Agrippa replied, “Almost you have persuaded me to become a Christian” (Acts 26:27-28). We don’t read that Agrippa was ever persuaded! Multitudes walk away from the invitation to salvation, knowing full well their soul is in jeopardy. How about you, friend? Do you want to go to heaven?
