Alfreda Schoenholtz Alfreda Schoenholtz , 89, of Millvale, Pa., formerly of Cañon City, was called by our Lord and passed peacefully on Sunday, Sept. 4, 2016.

She was the daughter of the late John and Ida Borgen.

Sister of Lawrence Borgen and Jean Nerkowski, and the late brothers August, Henry, Edward and Alfred.

She was the dear wife of the late Roy E. Alfreda Schoenholtz. Mother Schoenholtz of Roy H.(Carole), St. Peters, MO, Loren J. (Barbara), Reeds Springs, MO, Teemon (Ty) J. (Debbie), Pueblo West, CO and Suzan J. (Richard) Holt, Millvale.

Grandmother of Roy, Brian, David, John, Sarra, Allason, Julian and the late Jason. Great-grandmother of Colton, Hazel and Cole.

Alfreda (Nita) took full advantage of life by sharing her love, kindness and talents. She was a mother who made raising her four children on a 20 acre farm in Ginger Hill a devoted joyful priority. Her sons, Roy and Loren served honorably in the U.S. Navy. Alfreda was a Girl Scout and Cub Scout Leader, Cosmetologist, lead caregiver at Louise Child Care and along with her husband returned to college to receive a B.A. Degree.

Her sons worked in Saudi Arabia and she was able to travel with the family extensively in Europe. After Roy’s death she relocated to Colorado to manage her son’s business

(Mountain View Campground) for six years. She was passionate about children and began working at St. Scholastica as a house parent and also was involved with the HOSTS program at the elementary schools. She was a mother to many and received numerous awards for her dedication to the children.

Alfreda’s crocheting and baking talents won her many ribbons at the Colorado Fair.

Due to health concerns, she returned to Pittsburgh in the Fall of 2012 and was fortunate to find a new home at Alverno Apts. where she made new friendships with many special people. A weekly trip to the casino, plus bingo and domino nights competed her leisure time. Her nightly ritual included listening to Willie Nelson, Engelbert Humperdink and Roger Whittaker.

Alfreda’s beautiful smile and compassionate personality will be missed by all.

Diane “D.” McKinna Welch

Diane “D.” McKinna Welch, 64, passed away Sept. 13, 2016, lovingly surrounded by her family at her home in Cañon City. She outlived by three years an initial six-month diagnosis from a rare, terminal lung cancer.

D. was born Aug. 22, 1952, in Denver and was raised in Nebraska and Denver. She graduated from South High School in Denver in 1970 and earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Adams State University. After raising her children at home for 16 years and teaching English part time, she returned to school and took double courses to earn her master’s degree.

She thoroughly enjoyed operating her private practice in Cañon City for more than 20 years, where she treated several hundred patients, as well as some in Salida and Pueblo.

Some of the emphases she focused on in her practice were treating patients with mental and cognitive difficulties and analytic, or Jungian, psychology. She also enjoyed working with patients who had eating disorders and treatment-refractory depression.

D. always knew she wanted to work in psychiatry. At the age of 6, she herded her friends into a room and told them to recline on a couch as she took scrupulous notes in a journal. She first was inspired by Dr. Sigmund Freud, but later embraced Carl Jung’s theories and employed the Jungian approach with her patients. She believed Jung held the secret of life that she had spent years looking for.

D. truly loved her patients, some of whom she treated for several years and deeply valued the rela-

tionship she had with them. She spent one to two hours every day walking alone, using that quiet time to think about her patients’ problems and how she could better help guide them. She retired from her practice in 2011.

Despite a successful, fulfilling career, D.’s greatest accomplishment was her children, Bonny and Scott.

D. married Art Welch on Dec. 31, 2009. She recently said it was “a wonderful thing to marry such a perfect man.” The couple enjoyed traveling and serving the community through several civic groups and organizations. D. also enjoyed gardening, cooking, antiquing, recycling and had a love for Western TV shows. She once said she most certainly lived life while she was alive.

A quote by Pablo Picasso that D. held dear to her heart the last several weeks of her life was, “Only put off until tomorrow what you are willing to die having left undone.”

D. is survived by her husband, Art Welch; daughter, Bonny (Jörg Friebel) McKinna of Cologne, Germany; son, Scott (Jessica Unruh) McKinna, of Cañon City; and older brother, Bill Young, of Denver.

Evelyn Spangle Amedei May 24, 1919 – Sept. 10, 2016 Evelyn Spangle Amedei, 97, of Cañon City passed away on September 10, 2016 at the Skyline Ridge Nursing Home in Cañon City. She was born May 24, 1919, in Long Canyon, south of La Junta to Jesse & Addie Corbin. She was raised in the Higbee – Long Canyon area and attended both the Adkins and Adobe schools.

She rode a horse to school with her sister and brother.

She married Bill Spangle in 1936 and together they raised five children. In 1968, they moved to Cañon City, where she was very involved with the Golden Age Center and the Red Bow Tie Band.

She lost Bill in 1984 and remarried Tony Amedei.

“Grannie” as she was affectionately known by her grandchildren and they enjoyed many good times together. She loved quilting, taking care of

her yard, and growing beautiful roses, traveling, also loved music and dancing at the Cañon Senior Center until she was 93. She had made many beautiful quilts that each one of her grandchildren received.

She is survived by her children, Jerry (Mary Lou) Spangle, J.D. (Deliah) Spangle, Dorothy (Ron) Follett, Wilma (Lonnie) Jackson and Orval (Alta Davis) Spangle; 13 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren; 16 great, greatgrandchildren. Bikes and Brews rides into town Saturday Most of the people who organize Cañon City’s annual Bikes and Brews event committee don’t get to participate in the event.

At Bikes and Brews, which is set for Sept. 24, bicyclists ride through one of three routes around Cañon City before heading back to Macon Plaza for a community beer festival.

Fremont Adventure Recreation, which created the event four years ago, already had 150 people signed up in early September, though Sack estimated there would be close to 200 by the start date. But not many of them were committee members.

“Most of us don’t ever get to ride it,” said Ashlee Sack, an event organizer.

Instead, she said, the committee is dedicated to creating an event that promotes outdoor recreation and attracts people to Cañon City. At the

beginning of September, Sack said the committee had people signed up from cities ranging from Fort Collins to Portland, Ore. For cyclists, the event is split into three road routes around Cañon City. Sack said participants generally need to bring road cycles, though there are a few county roads on the routes.

The longest route, the Royal Gorge Century, starts at Eight Mile and goes through Parkdale Hill, Copper Gulch, a section with a view of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and the Royal Gorge Bridge and Park before circling back to Skyline Drive and, eventually, Macon Plaza to get to the Aid Station.

After that, participants head toward to the Red Canyon Out and Back route to put on more miles.

At the end of the day, according

to the event’s website, some participants in this route will have traveled 100 miles.

Another route riders can participate in is the Metric Mash, a ride similar to the Royal Gorge Century, but with fewer miles.

The Red Canyon 50k, the shortest route, is targeted more toward participants looking for a mellower ride, Sack said. This route takes participants through the Garden Park Fossil Area, before directing them back to Macon Plaza.

After the riding is over, Sack said, food and beer will be served at Macon Plaza. This year’s event is set to include pizza from Pizza Madness and beer from Odell Brewing Co. and Florence Brewing Co. Additionally, she said, vendors and musicians will be there for the day.

“It’s always a wonderful, mellow

afternoon,” she said, adding that it’s part of an effort to bring people downtown.

And that’s been the goal of the event since it was started four years ago.

Sack said the event is set up to support outdoor recreation in Fremont County under FAR, an organization that helps created bike trails.

Additionally, the organization has a scholarship set up for local collegebound students.

She said participants can sign up at their website, bikesandbrews. com, or by showing up early at registration, which is set to run from 6 to 11 a.m. the day of the event. The beer festival, also open to people who didn’t ride, is slated for 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

“Truth Will Prevail”

Error and lies abound in our land today: we see it daily in the political arena and in the realm of religion. Six hundred years before Christ, a prophet said, “Woe unto them that call evil good and good evil; that put darkness for light and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter” (Isaiah 5:20).

Another prophet said, “A horrible and shocking thing has happened in the land; the prophets prophesy falsely and the priests bear rule by their hands and the people love it this way: but what will you do in the end?” (Jeremiah 5:30-31) and “From the least of them to the greatest, all are greedy for gain; prophets and priests alike practice deceit” (Jeremiah 6:13). “The end” of that story was that Judah went captive to Babylon for 70 years! Is it much different today? God’s Word is largely ignored or even scorned. Prayer is no longer allowed in our public schools; the Bible and Christianity are suppressed while the Koran and Islam are advanced (or required!). Acts of national patriotism and respect for our law enforcement officials are giving way to disrespect and malicious violence.

Those of us who consider such actions “deplorable” have become targets for ridicule! Like the prophets, we weep for the demise of our country but we will not be silent. We will speak where the Bible speaks for we know God’s Word will not return to Him void (or empty) but will ultimately accomplish what He desires (Isaiah 55:11). God’s Word is truth (John 17:17) and it will prevail!
