In Loving Memory Kendal I. Abbott Sept. 11, 1933 ~ Jan. 26, 2018 Kendal Ingaborg Abbott, 84, of Canon City, passed away January 26, 2018. Kendal was born to Douglas and Helen (Velin) Andrews on Sept. 11, 1933 in Denver, Colorado and grew up in Castle Rock. In 1953, she graduated from Colorado Women’s College and later earned a degree in Occupational Therapy from Colorado A&M (CSU) in 1956. Kendal met John Abbott while attending CSU and they were married November 23, 1956. The couple moved to Pueblo in 1958 where John worked for CF&I steel mill. Kendal taught sewing and knitting to a 4-H club, was a Girl Scout leader and worked as a homemaker being a devoted wife and mother to her family. She always had a needle in her hand showing her beautiful work through ballet costumes, vestments and altar cloths for churches, quilts and clothing. Kendal also tole painted and made many beautiful painted pieces.Kendal was an active member of PEO Chapter FC in Canon City and a former member of CG in Pueblo. Kendal and John attended Ascension Episcopal Church in Pueblo until 2001 where she served on the Altar Guild. In 2001 Kendal and John moved to Canon City where they attend Christ Episcopal Church. She remained active in the Altar guild while also volunteering at the Episcopal Thrift Store in Colorado Springs. Kendal was an avid walker and could be seen in the neighborhood during her daily walks. She loved gardening and the outdoors. She wanted to be productive and contributed so much to her family and friends lives. She was thankful for the life that God let her live and she will be missed by her family, friends, and everyone’s lives she touched. Kendal is survived by her husband, John Abbott; son, Todd (Linda) Abbott; daughters, Kimberly (Andrew) Bolton and Jennifer (Scott) Fawaz; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Funeral service, 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 3, 2018, Christ Episcopal Church, 802 Harrison Avenue, Canon City, Colorado. Services have been entrusted to Holt Family Funeral Home. Bessie Lavina Ramsey July 13, 1925 - January 28, 2018 Bessie Lavina Ramsey, 92, passed away on January 28, 2018. She was born on July 13, 1925 in Longmont, Colorado to Jacob and Goldie Derr. She married James Ramsey and had two daughters. Bessie was a Psychiatric Technician for the State Hospital in Pueblo. She loved to crochet intricate masterpieces while watching a good Western or maybe listening to Hank Williams soulful singing. She is survived by her daughter Barbara (Clair) Horsman, and grandson David Williamson. She was proceeded in death by her parents, husband and daughter Katherine Ramsey. Heather (Eaklor) Carroll March 13, 1949 - Jan. 18, 2018 It is with a heavy heart we announce the passing of Heather (Eaklor) Carroll, 68 years old. She died Jan. 18, 2018 in her childhood home in Penrose, Colorado. She was born to Carl and Mary Jane Eaklor in Pagosa Springs on March 13, 1949. Heather lived most of her life in Penrose surrounded by her sister, Shannon Eaklor, and mother, Mary Jane. As a young girl, she loved her horses and being out in nature. Heather also loved the open road. She enjoyed simply going on a drive to explore areas she had never been. Everyone who had the pleasure of knowing Heather will remember her smile and her wit, but most of all, they will remember how selflessly she cared for everyone. Whether it was a stray kitten, a confused youth, or needy friend, her arms were open and she would give her all. Heather is survived by her sister, Shannon Eaklor, her son Paul Eaklor and his wife Cheri Eaklor, and her three grandchildren, Justin, Jordan, and Shayla Eaklor. A memorial service will be held at Canon City Seventh-day Adventist Church located at 3180 E Main St, Canon City, CO 81212 on Tuesday, January 30, 2018 from 1PM to 3PM. William C. Carter 1930 – 2018 William C. Carter moved to his eternal home January 25, 2018 and is survived by his wife Nancy and daughters Ruth, Lori and Linda, 12 grandchildren, Bill, Courtney, Josh, Sarah, Molly, Derrick, Drew, Jamie, Jeremy, True, Kate and Emma, and eight greatgrandchildren, William, James, Joey, Serenity, Victor, Hannah, Ambrose and Giles. He was preceded in death by his three brothers, Dewayne, Robert, and Merle, and one sister, Wanda, and his daughter Beth. Bill was born in Medicine Lodge, Kan., in 1930 to Ruth and William Merton Carter. His family moved to Colorado in 1944; Bill graduated from Palmer High School. He married Nancy, the love of his life, at First United Methodist Church in 1956. During his career he worked as an electrician for Colorado Springs City Utilities, on a dairy farm, in a fiberglass plant, as a lineman, and drove semi-trucks. He fondly remembered his time serving as a construction foreman in Nigeria and loved spending time with family. When not at work he could be found in his home workshop creating prizewinning woodcarvings. He never met a stranger, and he was a committed Christian. He will be dearly missed by his friends and family. His memorial service will be held at noon on Saturday, Feb. 3, at Memorial Gardens in Colorado Springs (viewing at 11 am). A graveside service will follow, with a reception at Academy Christian Church at 3 pm. Memorial gifts may be sent to Samaritan’s Purse at P.O. Box 3000, Boone, NC 28607.

Keith Arnold Thomas February 17, 1937 - January 19, 2018 Keith Arnold Thomas, 80, of Canon City, CO, passed away in Tucson, AZ on January 19, 2018 on his way to enjoying another winter travelling, finding old friends and making new. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 pm on February 3rd at Christian Family Fellowship church at 1011 Monroe Ave, Canon City, CO. A reception will follow the service at his home in Canon City. Keith was born to Haydn and Gladys (Richards) Thomas in their home in Cotter, Iowa on February 17, 1937. He was raised on a farm in Crawfordsville, IA and graduated from Crawfordsville High School in 1955. Keith served in the Army while attending Iowa Wesleyan College. He later earned his Master of Arts degree in Education from Northeast Missouri State University. He was a passionate educator and worked closely with students and teachers as a fellow educator, coach and administrator until his retirement in 1992. Keith married Sherry Sue Stull on May 24, 1959, who he met while attending Iowa Wesleyan. They were happily married for 38 years, until her death in 1998. They had three children together: Kirt, Jeff, and Tracy. He started his career teaching Science, Math and History and coaching a variety of girls and boys sports teams in Douds, IA where his high school girl’s basketball team achieved state recognition and competed for the championship. After spending the initial stages of his career in Iowa, Keith accepted the position of Principal at the newly established Milliken Middle School (RE-5j) and moved his family to Johnstown, CO, where he continued to coach girl’s basketball. Keith was the first principal at MMS after Johnstown and Milliken combined schools and Milliken High School was expanded to transition to a middle school supporting both towns. He was integral in the establishment of the Bilingual program for the RE-5j school system, and initiated the use of desktop computers in the classroom. Keith was well known in Weld County as the announcer for the RHS sports teams, particularly football and boys basketball. He was the principal at MMS for 16 years before moving on to take a position with the Weld County BOCES where he continued his work to bring technology into the classroom and to promote the middle school educational model. After serving three years with the BOCES, Keith accepted a position as an administrator at Canon City Jr. High School (Middle School), where he worked to implement the middle school model. He was with the Canon City Schools until his retirement in 1992. After retiring from the public school systems, Keith worked several summers (to keep out of Sherry’s way) as a gate attendant and as the children’s train operator at the Royal Gorge, entertaining children and parents alike. He was an avid golfer and fisherman, and enjoyed travelling, the outdoors, wood working and socializing with his friends at local diners and restaurants. He never met a stranger, and always enjoyed a good joke (especially if it was on someone else…). Keith is survived by siblings Carol (Ed) Hawkins and Kenneth (Peggy) Thomas, his children Kirt (Becky Stephens) Thomas, Jeff (Sarah Logan) Thomas, and Tracy (Troy) Milburn, his grandchildren Jared (Adrienne) Reck, Bree Thomas, Kaylee Thomas, Zane Schneider, Gavin Milburn, Josie Thomas, Hannah Thomas, and Eli Thomas, his great grandchildren Joanne and Charlie Reck, and many other family and friends. Keith is preceded in death by his wife, Sherry and his sister Barbara Thomas. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Diabetes Research Institute Foundation or the American Heart Association. The family wishes to thank everyone for the kind thoughts and prayers in this difficult time. He was loved by many, and will be sorely missed.

March 25, 1961 - January 26, 2018 Patricia Michele Visocsky (Patti) was born March 25, 1961 in Vicenza, Italy. Patti died unexpectedly on January 26, 2018 in Canon City, CO. She was the daughter of Roger and Loretta Murphy of Canon City, CO. Patti’s life involved travel all over the United States and Europe, because her father was a career soldier in the U.S. Army. She lived in Italy for 3 years and in Germany for 2 1/2 years. She learned to speak both Italian and German. After her father retired from the Army, the family settled in Canon City. Patti attended school in Florence and Canon City. Patti and husband Rob Visocsky lived in Colorado Springs, CO and later moved to Canon City and then Penrose, CO. They have three daughters- Lisa Windus, Amy (Leo) Robledo and Krissy Visocsky. They have six grandchildren- Rosemary, Victoria, Leo, Elijah, and Ernesto Robledo and Juliet Windus. Patti worked as a certified nurse’s assistant, was a good mother, wife, grandmother, sister, and daughter. We will miss her happy smile and hearing her talk. She did love to talk. She is survived by her husband, children, grandchildren, both parents, sister, Carrie Martin of Canon City, Brother Roger (Kathy) Murphy of Gray Court, SC, Aunt Carol Wimp of Canon City, Ron Logan and family of Colorado Springs, CO., cousins, nephews and nieces. Famed photographer to visit Royal Gorge Region Those who are or know a photography aficionado likely have heard of famed photographer John Fielder. His work, ranging from panoramic landscapes to sideby-side recreations of iconic Colorado images, spans more than 35 years. On April 14, Fremont Adventure Recreation will host Fielder at the Royal Gorge Bridge & Park for a series of workshops and a photography show. Fielder’s work is aesthetically gorgeous, focusing on vibrant, arresting images of Colorado’s scenic landscapes: aspen meadows, National Parks, ghost towns, rivers, canyons, and wildflowers. His work is featured in books, calendars, fine art prints, and galleries across the country. His best-selling book, ‘Colorado: 1870-2000’ (and the subsequent second edition), juxtaposes William Henry Jackson’s 19th-century images and Fielder’s own recreations of the same viewpoint, offering a unique look into Colorado’s past and present.

In addition to being visually stunning, Fielder’s work also often benefits the very land that he captures on film. Fielder has won the Ansel Adams Award for Conservation Photography, the Colorado Conservation Award, The Rocky Mountain National Park Stewardship Award, and many other accolades. “We couldn’t be more proud or excited to host Mr. Fielder at the Royal Gorge. Katelyn McCarter joins Off The Top Carie Canterbury The Daily Record Off The Top recently welcomed a new stylist, Katelyn McCarter. McCarter has been a licensed cosmetologist for eight years. She offers hair coloring, cuts, styling and updos, as well as limited nail services. “She is an excellent cutter Katelyn McCarter and colorist,” said Kathleen Schumacher, the owner and operator of Off The Top. McCarter was born and raised in Summit County, where she worked in private and commercial salons. She married Florence native Ethan McCarter in 2017, and the couple relocated to Cañon City. McCarter said she loves every aspect of the business. “Growing up, I always told myself I wouldn’t be the one to find the cure for cancer, but I knew I would be the one to help people find beauty within themselves and help them to feel empowered about who they are,” she said. Vendors wanted for 2018 Spring Home & Garden Show This year’s two-day event will be March 16-17 at the Abbey fieldhouse By Carie Canterbury The Daily Record Vendors are being sought now for the 12th annual Spring Home & Garden Show, which is hosted by the Cañon City Daily Record and Shopper. This year’s two-day event will be from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 16 and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 17 at the Abbey fieldhouse, located at 2951 E. U.S. 50. The show typically features more than 40 booths, ranging from landscaping and decorating to home repair and much more. Karl Wurzbach, the publisher of the Cañon City Daily Record and Shopper, said the event was started by former Shopper publisher Gary Minor several years ago. The tradition continues to gain popularity. “This year’s show will be loaded with many vendors from landscapers to decorating companies to painters to freshly baked bread and many other diverse businesses,” Wurzbach said. “We are arranging for a nonprofit to have food available for donations. There will be pony rides for the kids and fun things to do for the big kids, as well.” Admission to the show is free to the public. Vendors will be stationed inside and outside the fieldhouse. “We are anticipating a great turnout of both vendors and people coming to enjoy the show,” Wurzbach said.

They also will be treated to a VIP event on that Friday evening, which will include food, beer and wine. During the show, there will be music, coffee and donuts for the public, and other food options will be available for a donation.

The Cañon City Daily Record and Shopper also will publish more than 18,000 copies of the Spring Home & Garden Show publication prior to the show to inform Fremont County residents of the vendors who will be in attendance and a detailed map of the participants. Vendors interested in reserving a space in the 2018 Spring Home & Garden Show should stop by the Daily Record office at 1202 Royal Gorge Blvd. to pick up a packet with contract information. Office hours are 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Fridays. There will be no more poor supervision, dishonesty, lack of leadership, corruption, and lack of accountability within your Sheriff ’s office. The badge officers wear is a symbol of the public’s faith and trust.
