In Loving Memory Frances ‘Fry’ Kay Slack

Frances “Fry” Kay Slack, 89, of Rockvale, CO passed away Feb. 10, 2017. She was born June 4, 1927 to Joseph and Ninfa (Fazzino) DeCarlo in Rouse, CO, but moved to Rockvale shorly after and was a lifelong resident of Rockvale.

Soon she met William Slack, the love of her life there in Rockvale and then married him in 1946. Fry was an active member of the community volunteering at St. Joseph Hospital, a founding member of the Rockvale Community Club, charter member of TOPS Frances Slack Chapter #96 and a member of United Lodge #36 of Rockvale.

An Italian through and through, her children remember waking up to the smell of homemade bread every Saturday morning and enjoying her pasta dinners every Sunday. She loved baking and excelled at her Italian specialty cookies.

She laughed often and found humor in everyday life, always reminding folks “you need to have a sense of humor”.

Many will remember her from Sali’s Paradise and Morelli’s Restaurants. She enjoyed many activities, however, going to Cripple Creek was her favorite pastime. She didn’t really care if she won, she just loved to play.

She is survived by her daughter, Kristina Picher of Littleton, Willie (Cathy) Slack of Florence, CO; grandchildren, Kevin Runner and his spouse Gwyn Runner, Michael Slack and Joseph Slack; great-grandchildren, Konner and Kylie Runner.

She was preceded by her parents, husband, grandson, Kristopher Runner; siblings, John Palmeri, Tony DeCarlo, Joe “Pete” DeCarlo, Grace Dalsant, Budgie “Spud” DeCarlo, Lena Costanzo and Virginia “Virg” Ziolkowski. Rosary will be held at 9:20 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2017, with a Memorial Mass to follow at 10 a.m., both at St. Benedicts Catholic Church, Florence.

Mary Blanche Helm, our beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother passed away February 9, 2017 in Cañon City at age 89. She was born May 7, 1927 in Highland County, VA to Jeffress and Annie Elizabeth Hartless.

After graduating high school, her family moved to Cañon City, and she attended Business College. She met Robert Helm when she started working at Helm Drug. He completed Pharmacy School while courting her and they were married on Aug. 25, 1946. They had 66 wonderful years together until his death on April 1, 2013. She worked Mary B. Helm

by Robert’s side at Helm Drug for many years. They loved to travel but in the last years of their lives were happy to spend time on their acre on Cottonwood Creek in Coaldale.

Mary was a loving and devoted mother. She supported all of our activities, encouraged our dreams, and provided respite when we needed it. The same devotion was given to her adoring grandchildren.

She was delighted when also blessed by great grandchildren.

Mary was a talented artist as evidenced by the paintings in her home. She loved to read and do puzzles which she passed down to her children and grandchildren. We will all miss helping her try to figure out a five letter word for No. 2 Down. She was a faithful member of the Church of Christ and was a Sunday School teacher for many years. She loved her church family and we are grateful for all they did for her. Mary will be greatly missed by family and friends.

Mary was preceded in death by husband Robert Helm; daughter, Sherri Watkins; and sister Ruby Miller.

She is survived by her children, Ronald Helm (Seattle WA), Crecia Baker (Ogden UT); grandchildren, Jason Helm, Jonathan Baker, Jeremy Baker, Annie Baker, Brandi Watkins, Aimee Watkins; great grandchildren, Braylon, Sasha, Hunter; a greatgranddaughter on the way; brother, Palmer Hartless; sisters, Wanda (Gerry) Hughes and Rita Kennedy.

She was also loved and cared for by Larry (Denise) Watkins and John Baker.

Helen M. Louk Oct. 17, 1933 - Feb. 7, 2017

Helen Marie (Brito) Louk, 83, of Cañon City passed away on February 7, 2017 at UC Health Center in Aurora.

Helen was born in Olathe on Oct. 17, 1933, to Thomas and Teresa Brito. Helen was raised in and attended school in Olathe until graduating in 1951. On March 31, 1953, Helen married William S. Louk. Helen was a devoted and loving wife and mother to three children.

Helen is survived by her husband, William, her children, David (Becky) Louk of Winnemucca, NV, Terecita (Dave) Louk-Johnson of Cañon City, Lorri (Eric) Louk-Shampine of Littleton, also her grandchildren Wendy Carpenter, David and Shane Bennett, Cameron and Collin Shampine, two great grandchildren Kaleb Howell and Marley Jett and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in

death by her parents, grandson, Cody T. Louk, four brothers and three sisters.

Helen was very active in her community as a volunteer, she served fourteen years as a pink lady at St. Thomas More Hospital, Fremont County School District, Share Program, Knights of Columbus, but most of all as a devoted Catholic for her faith at St. Michaels Parish. Arrangements are pending but will be officiated by one of her dearest friends Monsignor James King.

Helen’s final resting place will be Memory Gardens in Montrose, Colorado.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Helen’s name to a memorial fund account at Wells Fargo Bank to be used at UC Health Center for ongoing research of Pulmonary Hyper Tension.

Proposed Florence village to serve area’s homeless Carie Canterbury The Daily Record

FLORENCE — Koinonia Village, a proposed tiny house and RV village in Florence, isn’t just about housing for locals who are homeless or on the verge of homelessness, it’s about community.

Pastors Jeff and Dawn Ward of the Wellspring Church at 950 Victory Lane have been in discussions with Florence city administrators for several months, discussing how to go about gaining city council approval and rezoning the property.

“Koinonia means fellowship, which means we would do life with (the residents) — you don’t just provide them a place and send them there and say ‘go live there and everything will be OK,’” Jeff said. “You actually do life with them and have fellowship with them.”

Koinonia Village would be established by the Wellspring Church, with the intent that it become a stand-alone 501 c 3 entity, with its own employees and board of directors.

The church property sits on four acres of land off Colo. 67, and the five acres east of the church on the north side of Victory Lane would be designated for Koinonia Village.

Dawn said there are about 25 individuals in Florence experiencing homelessness, ranging in age from children to senior citizens.

Jeff recently attended a conference with Community First! Village, a development of Mobile Loaves & Fishes, in Austin, Texas. It’s a 27-acre master planned community that provides affordable, permanent housing and a supportive community for the disabled, chronically homeless.

They have 250 residences, either tiny homes or RVs. Residents have electricity and means for cooking, but no running water. They instead use communal restroom, shower and laundry facilities, similar to those at a commercial campground.

The Wards plan to create Koinonia Village similar to Community First! Village, which was featured on NBC News in April 2016 ( http:// nbcnews.to/2lj6eOf).

“They build community with the people,” Jeff said. “They say homes do not prevent homelessness, but community does. That’s their philosophy.”

Since Koinonia Village is not a hand out, but rather a hand up, and to give the residents a sense of ownership, the Wards say, residents will be charged rent for living there. Those who have no source of income could have the opportunity to earn vouchers to pay rent. There also would be staff members living on site, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

“Even within in the community will be accountability,” Dawn Ward said, adding that the property at Community First! Village is kept immaculate.

Conex boxes would be provided for residents who have items to store so that the property is clean and tidy, not scattered with litter or personal belongings. The property in Texas also has gardens and micro-businesses where residents can contribute.

Gourmet Sampler set for Feb. 26 Residents can sample a taste of Fremont County during the sixth annual Gourmet Sampler, which benefits the Orchard of Hope, on Feb. 26 at the Holy Cross Abbey Event Center, 2951 E. U.S. 50.

A total of 18 vendors will serve 300 people from noon to 3 p.m. Tickets are sold out for the event.

Sandi Allen, founder and executive director of the organization, estimated the event raised $8,000 in 2016.

“All of this money will go right back into the community,” Allen said.

Allen emphasized that the proceeds raised from the event will go to cancer patients. The food vendors, which this year will include a wine tasting from the Winery at the Holy Cross Abbey and beer from the Florence Brewery, will not receive any of the money raised at the event.

“They get nothing in return for that except helping the community,” said Jerry Anderson, Orchard of Hope volunteer and former board member.

Allen said the Orchard of Hope was established 15 years ago. The nonprofit organization provides direct financial support to people battling cancer.

The organization will, for example, pay for gas to get to and from treatment centers, and if the patient is a breadwinner for a family, the Orchard of Hope will help with house payments and getting loans.

Penrose brothers take over D & K Supply Sarah Matott

For years, D&K Supply has provided Penrose with a close location to get all of their feed and supplies.

But when it was put up for sale, brothers Jared Huston and Tyler Faoro said they didn’t want to see another local business close down.

Huston, 26, and Faoro, 22, who both grew up in Penrose, took over the store Dec. 22 after purchasing it from the previous owner.

Huston, has a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and is employed with the federal prsions. Faoro attends the Colorado School of Mines; he also has his bachelor’s and is still in school working on his master’s.

“We didn’t want to see another store close, because it was going to.

And we are involved a lot in 4-H here, and they need this store,” Huston said.

Faoro said despite being new

owners, the store still is the same.

“We still carry all of the same feeds we did before, and we are looking at getting even more,” he said.

“It’s not just supplies for farm animals either, but we carry supplies for guinea pigs, parrots. If we don’t carry it, then we can get it,” Farrow said.

Huston said both of them had worked at the store before, but ownership is a different experience.

“There was no day off between the transitions, we just opened up like normal,” Huston said, adding that it has been a lot busier then just working the retail side of the business.

“It’s a learning curve,” he said.

Both brothers said they hope to improve the store as they move forward, explaining they’ve already given the front a “face-lift.”

Cañon City Police Department has new chief Sarah Matott

The City of Cañon City has selected a commander with the Vail Police Department as its new police chief.

Daric Harvey, 42, will takeover as chief June 5, according to a news release from the city.

Harvey replaces former Police Chief Paul Schultz, who left Cañon City in early January after he accepted a new job in Fort Morgan.

Deputy Chief Allen Cooper has been acting as interim chief.

Schultz was sworn in as interim chief in July 2012 after the resignation of former Chief Duane McNeill, who previously had been placed on administrative leave after an internal audit report overwhelmingly revealed negative feedback toward the administration. Schultz later accepted the position as Chief of Police.

“I’m definitely excited, and right now, my family and I are working through the transition we will need to make,” Harvey said.

City Administrator Tony O’Rourke said the candidates who applied were great, but Harvey stood out to the selection panels because of a few reasons.

“He has over 20 years of law enforcement experience but in multiple agencies,” O’Rourke said, explaining that was something that stood out because two of those agencies are large police departments in Florida.

During the past five years, Daric has served as both the Operations and Administrative Commander of

the Town of Vail, Colorado Police Department.

“There’s experience with large law enforcement agencies and boutique agencies, like what we consider ours to be,” O’Rourke said.

O’Rourke said the selection committees also liked that Harvey was involved with his community, including youth outreach and domestic violence programs.

Harvey said he looks forward to meeting the people of Cañon City because he sees himself as an “active person.”

In an interview prior to being selected, Harvey said he thinks a police department should be community focused and that good policing isn’t made by making a lot of arrests but through community outreach.

Harvey, who is married and has three children, said he won’t be able to start his new position until June because he wants a smooth transition for his family.

His oldest is a senior in high school and will graduate this year, Harvey said.

“Right now, my oldest is focusing on whether he is going to college or the military, and my youngest, she already is saying she wants to buy a horse,” Harvey said.

Cooper will continue serving as interim chief until June 5.

“Chief Cooper has done an outstanding job overseeing and providing leadership for the police department, and I am confident the transition to new Chief Daric Harvey will be seamless,” O’Rourke said.

“Old Time Worship” The word “worship” (from the Greek PROSKUNEO, to kiss toward), means to deify, adore, bow before, do reverence to. In the first century, Christians came together on the first day of the week (our “Sunday”) to worship God. Of primary importance was to remember the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ (Acts 20:7). Many know this remembrance as “The Lord’s Supper” or simply “communion.” From New Testament teaching and example we learn that during this assembly of the church there would also be singing, prayer, teaching, preaching and fellowship. God was the sole recipient of this worship and those who were gathered were the participants. True worshipers did not come to be “entertained” but to give praise to God and to glorify His Name. Jesus said, “God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and in truth” (John 4:24). To worship God “in Spirit” means that one’s attitude must be that of reverence and sincerity: free from worldly distractions and with focus of mind and heart.

To worship God “in truth” means that worship must be as He has directed or in keeping with His Word: His Word is truth (John 17:17). Worship that is acceptable to God must be measured by these two factors which are of equal importance: in spirit and in truth.
