Feb. 11, 1950 - Nov. 7, 2017 Larry A. Kingrey lost his battle with cancer on Nov. 7, 2017. Larry was born on Feb. 11, 1950, in Pueblo, Colorado, and lived throughout Colorado most of his life. He graduated from Cañon City High School and attended Colorado State University, Ft. Collins. He also earned a PHD in the school of hard knocks. Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Freida Kingrey. He is survived by his children: Jodi Pratt (Dan Pratt) Shawn Kingrey (Laura Hoevel) and Jeremy Kingrey (Tiffany Kingrey); and his wife Jan Renfrow and her daughter Renee Renfrow (Jeff Wallach). He is also survived by countless devoted friends as well as anglers who use his custom fly designs to taunt fish from their hiding places. Larry was a multi-talented man. He was a bronc rider, meat cutter, fly-fisherman, fly tier, fishing guide, casting and tying instructor, creative cook and master barbecue/smoked meat chef. Larry loved his dogs-Sam who is now reunited with him and Tess who is missing him. He also loved ol’ fashioned country music and was known to cut quite a figure on the dance floor. Larry loved his family, friends, fly-fishing, football and having fun. He is well loved by many and deeply missed. The family would like to thank Sangre de Christo Hospice for their excellent and caring assistance. Larry appreciated the help and comfort they provided. A celebration of life will be held Dec. 10, 2017, in the Abbots Room at Holy Cross Abby from 2 to 6 p.m., Cañon City, Colorado. The boat will launch at 2 pm. Oct. 3, 1917 ~ Nov. 21, 2017 Florence DeLellis Schwab, born 100 years ago in Lime, Colorado, to parents Pauline (Corpolongo) and Joseph DeLellis, and raised in Pueblo, Colorado, passed away in Cañon City, Colorado, on Nov. 21, 2017. Florence was preceded by her husband and best dance partner of 64 years, Michael Schwab Sr. She was also preceded by her parents and siblings, Helen Spinuzzi, Louis DeLellis, Mary Lehr, Tony DeLellis, and daughterin-law, Laura Schwab. Florence leaves to cherish her memory sons, Mike (Patti), Ron (Carol); grandchildren, Ron (Jaime), Nikol(Rich), Kylee (Cherylynn); great-grandchildren, Christian, Jailee, Easton, Henry, Josephine; sister and brother-in-law, Charles and Jean Carlino along with many nieces and nephews. Florence was blessed with not only a loving family but also many loving friends. She treasured her dear friends Georgianna Bresnam, friend of over 20 years, Star McIlhenny, daily sunshine, Betty White, daily coffee delivery, Jim La Brash, dance partner and Charlotte and Billy Haines. Florence was clear that her 100th birthday party was her good-bye to all. She wanted everyone to remember her laughing, eating and visiting at her party. She requested no services or memorial and cremation has taken place. Florence would prefer you go out and dance, honor your family by sharing a meal together or enjoy a visit with dear friends. Trube Shaw Gilkerson Jr.
Trube Shaw Gilkerson Jr. 85, died on 11/23/17 in Cañon City. His service and interment will be at Imperial Memorial Gardens in Pueblo on Friday, Dec. 1, at 1 p.m. He was born in Big Stick WV, and was proceeded in death by his first wife Bonnie Grundmeier in 1976, his last wife Rita Galindo in 2015, and his son Roger in 2002. He is survived by his sister Pauline Thewes of Alexandria, VA, son Robert of Cañon City, his grandsons Jeremy (Kelly) Gilkerson of Cañon City, Cory Gilkerson of Colorado Springs, and his Daughter-in-law Judy (Roger) Gilkerson of Cañon City, along with two great grandsons Reese & Brooks, and two step daughters Anna (Tom) McArdle of Sparks NV, and Irene Galindo of Pueblo. His passing is a blessing of sorts, and is definitely in a better place - because both his body and his mind were failing him through the ravages of Parkinson’s and Lewy body dementia. As kid growing up in the depression era 30’s - he was quite the little street hustler selling newspapers, candy and even condoms on street. In the 50s, he joined the Air Force, and served in Arlington, Texas, and Cheyenne WY - where he meet his first wife, Bonnie, on a road trip to Greeley. He spend most of his adult life working at the steel mill in Pueblo, where he repaired electrical motors for over 40 years. Although he had many vices, he was kind and generous to everyone who knew him. He met his last wife Rita, when he lent her his car - so she could go on job interview. His family would like to thank the nurses, aides, and staff at Skyline Ridge Nursing Home for their kindness during the last phase of his life. Goodbye Dad, you will be missed by everyone who knew you.
Alice Kathryn (Atencio) Solano Alice Kathryn (Atencio) Solano, 83, died Thursday, Nov. 23, 2017 in Cheyenne, Wyoming. She was born Dec. 26, 1933 to Esther (Tafoya) and Joe Atencio in Salida, Colorado. The family moved to Cañon City, Colorado in 1943. Alice graduated from Cañon City High School and arranged class reunions for decades following. She was proud to be a Cañon City Tiger. On April 23, 1960 she married Isidro Solano. They made their home in Cañon City, where Alice worked for St. Thomas More Hospital as a lab technician for many years. Sid was active in the Elks and Alice was by his side as an Elkette. She was dedicated to the restoration of the San Juan Bautista Cemetery in Florence, Colorado. She was a member of the St. Michael Catholic Parish for over seventy years and was an avid supporter of the animal shelter and a lover of all things with fur or feathers. Alice moved to Cheyenne, Wyoming in 2016 following the death of her husband. She was also preceded in death by her mother and father, sisters, Ida, Mary, Esther and Lena and brother, Ralph. She is survived by sister, Carmel (Forest) Hamilton of Cheyenne, Wyoming; brothers, Chuck (Rachel) of Pueblo West, Colorado, Joe (Betty) Atencio of Hephzibah, Georgia, along with many, many nieces, nephews and extended family. Alice didn’t know a stranger. She delighted trickor-treaters for decades with homemade popcorn balls and her laugh was infectious. Just as lovingly as she had cared for so many through her life, the staff of the Aspen Wind Assisted Living center in Cheyenne cared for her with extraordinary kindness. Recitation of the Rosary with Vigil service, 5 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 29, St. Michael Catholic Church, 1016 Mystic Ave., in Cañon City. Mass of Christian Burial, 11 a.m Thursday, Nov. 30, also at St. Michael Catholic Church, Reverend Jesse Perez as Celebrant with interment to follow at Lakeside Cemetery. In Loving Memory Darrell Lindsey Aug. 12, 1935 ~ Nov. 27, 2017 Darrell Lindsey, late of Florence passed away on November 27, 2017 at the age of 82. Darrell was born in Florence Colorado on August 12, 1935 to Oden and Mary (Reilly) Lindsey. Mary passed when he was seven months old. His grandparents James and Barbara Lindsey moved him to their house as his father, Oden, was a Mountain Bell employee and was on the road most of the time. Oden married Lorraine Versman in the 1950’s. Darrell spent many summers with them as Oden traveled. Darrell graduated from Florence High School in 1953 with honors from the National Thespian Society and the National Honor Society. While in high school he participated in football and basketball. His love for the School System and FHS lead him to become the voice of the Huskies for 40 years, at football and basketball games. It was an honor he enjoyed. As a “little shaver” he developed a liking for stream fishing. Each Sunday Bill Draper and Norman Howells would take him up to middle creek, south of Wetmore to fish. He was 10 years old at the time and would always come home with his limit, which at that time was 20 fish. He continued his love for stream fishing until his health prohibited it. In 1953, Darrell enlisted in the Colorado Army National Guard. He stayed in the National Guard until 1966, serving his country for 13 years. About that same time he went to work for the U.S. Postal Service. He worked as a carrier and clerk for 17 years and as Postmaster for 18 years. While Postmaster he wrote a Training Manual for new postmasters and office changes. He also traveled throughout Southern half of Colorado to train new postmasters and help in trouble shooting at different offices. Darrell became a member of the Florence Pioneer Day Association and served many years including 12 years as President. One position he served in was the director of the Pioneer Day Melodrama. There he met his wife, Nancy (Singleterry) Lindsey. The Melodrama was Dirty Work at the Crossroads and Darrell played Adam Oakhart, the Hero and Nancy was Nelly Lovelace, the heroine. They married in May of 1965 and resided in Florence until his death. Darrell and Chopper Price thought the town needed a museum so they started a campaign to buy a building to house such a facility. They raised enough money with this campaign to purchase the building where the Florence Pioneer Museum still resides. Darrell served his community in countless ways. He was elected and served on the Florence Fire Protection District Board for 40 years as a Director/secretary. He was proud that he was able to write the grant to purchase the old city hall for the Florence Fire Protection District. He was Chairman of the Community Relations Board of the Federal Bureau of Prisons. While in that position, he was awarded the United States Attorney General Award for Meritorious Public Service for his part in helping to bring the Federal Prison Complex to Florence Colorado. He went to Washington D.C. to accept the award from the Acting Attorney General. Darrell served as Executive Director of the local Florence Chamber of Commerce for 15 years after he retired from the Postal Service. He was a member of the Red Brick Players for several years. He was a member of the Fremont County Economic Development Board, the Fremont County Pueblo Community College, Fremont County Crime Stoppers, Fremont County 911 Board and the Gold Belt Tour. He was a life time member of the Knights of Columbus Council #1225 reaching the 4th Degree Knight honor. He was also a lifetime member of the Florence Elks #611, serving many years as their secretary. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, his parents and his step mother. He is survived by his wife and children, Jennifer (Jim) Tareco of New Jersey, Elaine (Jim) Geiser of Maryland, Jeff (Tricia) Lindsey and Steve (Kristi) Lindsey both of Colorado, grandchildren Josh Peterson, Jake and Emily Geiser, Ivy, Molly, Zach Travis and Annie Lindsey, J.J., Jesse, Julia and Jillian Tareco and one great granddaughter Lavender Lindsey. Recitation of the Rosary, 9:15 a.m. followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 2, 2017, St. Benedicts Catholic Church in Florence. Interment will follow at Union Highland Cemetery, where many of his good friends also reside. A reception will be held following the interment at St Benedicts Parish Hall. New downtown gallery SOLO Art Space debuts By Carie Canterbury The Daily Record It’s an “idea factory” — a place where rules are meant to be bent and creative juices are allowed to flow freely. SOLO Art Space is a new downtown gallery open to artists of all abilities and interests, especially those who think outside the box. Co-founders Marti Lawrence Wolf and Alex Arpin opened their doors of SOLO Art Space at 115 Fifth St., adjacent to Macon Plaza, during the First Friday Art Walk. SOLO Art Space showcases leading regional contemporary artists and provides gallery space for experimental, contemporary exhibitions. Arpin and Lawrence Wolf, especially encourage exploratory art. Lawrence Wolf is a contemporary sculptor and painter and is recognized especially for her installation and assemblage art. She has represented the Arkansas River Valley for many years as owner of River Arts Studio, as an exhibiting artist and as a former professor of art at CSU-Pueblo and Pueblo Community College. Arpin is a sculptor who brings his background in industrial design and life-long career in the tower and steel industries to his compelling work. His local exhibitions have received Best of Show
awards, and he was featured in the Sangre de Cristo Art Center’s “SteamPunk” Exhibition in 2016. He also has had recent exhibitions in Denver and Santa Fe. The duo opened SOLO Art Space so artists can have a place to host solo exhibitions. Emerging to established artists are encouraged to apply for a variety of exhibition and membership opportunities. They invite people to stop in and share their ideas. “We are looking for members, and we’re looking for guest artists,” Lawrence Wolf said. “We want people who are pushing the edge — we’re not looking for traditional art.” Video art, sound art, light art and projection art also are welcome. “To be able to have a place where you can come and show artwork, where you have ‘dared’ — that’s what we want,” Lawrence Wolf said. The owners hope to offer a place to present unfettered work, new ideas and challenging presentations in a professional environment. “I also see it as a way where people who are traditional artists might want to try something different but don’t really have a place to do that — this gives them that opportunity to maybe try out a sculpture or try out installation art where they can bend the rules,” Ar-
pin said. “We want people to reach outside the boundaries.” SOLO Art Space also features a separate room called “The Vault” for installation art. The entire room is the art piece, and patrons are part of the experience. Lawrence Wolf’s current installation, “It Was Home Once,” currently is featured in The Vault. In December, Arpin and Lawrence Wolf will showcase their contemporary work. Lawrence Wolf will feature her paintings, including the large-scale six-foot by 11-foot atmospheric sky paintings of the “Fluid” series. She received national attention for the painting installation at the Jersey City Museum in 2009. January will feature Lawrence Wolf’s solo exhibition of her latest sculpture and installation; February will showcase Arpin’s newest works; and March’s show will be a community show for experimental art. The gallery is named “SOLO” because the only voice that will make the piece or create the art is the voice of the artist, Lawrence Wolf said. SOLO Art Space’s hours will be 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday and Saturday and by appointment.
