St. Thomas More celebrates midway point on new building By Carie Canterbury The Daily Record

Tuesday marked the midway point of construction on St. Thomas More Hospital’s new state-of-theart medical office building. The health-care team at St. Thomas More Hospital, contractors and board members celebrated the midway point with a topping out ceremony Tuesday, which included a ceremonial beam being placed on top of the new building. The building, which was the site of a groundbreaking ceremony in August 2016, is expected to be completed in spring 2018. It will be the new home for family and internal medicine, orthopedics, OB-GYN services, general surgery, an outpatient laboratory, conference room, x-ray suite, pediatric health services and the Coyote Coffee Den and Cafe, which will include indoor and outdoor seating. With two stories filled with about 75 offices, the building will house 28 to 30 physicians. “We are excited for our physicians, including staff and support services staff who will practice medicine and provide health and wellness education in our new facility,” said Jillian Maes, director of marketing for STM. “Together, we are building a greater future for what’s most important: quality, compassionate health care for our patients and our communities.” St. Thomas More Hospital CEO Sheri Trahern said the new medical

our clinics in one location so we could pick up some operational efficiencies, as well as help with patient access, consistency, a onestop-shop, and then give something back to this community that they’ve really needed with access to ambulatory medical services.” Kamerzell said the building is designed with an eye toward the future. “We’ve designed this so that we can horizontally expand in the future and work to the east with the two stories and continue to expand this project as needed for the future of Cañon City,” he said.

Keller Williams turns Global Conference into ‘Mega Relief’ for hurricane victims By Carie Canterbury Daily Record Instead of attending Keller Williams’ annual Mega Camp convention in Austin, Texas, Tony Greer ended up taking part in Mega Relief, a week-long disaster response campaign that raised $20 million for hurricane recovery and helped countless survivors of hurricanes Harvey and Irma. After Austin Mayor Steve Adler announcing that Austin would welcome thousands of hurricane evacuees to the Austin Convention Center, Keller Williams turned away millions of dollars in revenue and pivoted its event from Mega Camp to Mega Relief. From Sept. 11-15, more than 4,125 attendees cleaned more than 150 flooded homes, volunteered with nonprofits and with the City of Austin and local businesses gathered supplies and raised funds. “There were Keller Williams agents, there were affiliates, there were home inspection companies, title companies, and mortgage companies — really, the entire industry sort of stepped up,” said Greer, who is the former mayor of Cañon City and the current owner/ broker of Keller Williams Performance Realty. “I was fortunate enough to be able to take my daughter down there for a week. She wanted to contribute, as well.” Working with community partners

bused to volunteer sites during the day and returned to Austin for events that raised awareness and funds. Greer and his daughter, Jillian

Sullivan-Greer, 16, worked at the Second Baptist Church food bank all week, passing out grocery bags, sorting clothing donations and creating emergency toiletry bags. “It was a really impressive operation,” Greer said. “It was a huge effort and very, very well coordinated.” Greer interacted with survivors ranging from those who lost everything to those whose houses were not damaged but they couldn’t return home yet because of floodwaters. “Everyone cooperated, everyone was very gracious,” he said. Greer remembered helping with clean-up efforts after the 2013 flooding in Lyons, and how agents from across the world came to help with that effort, so the decision to help with the Texas mission was an easy one. He said it wasn’t considered a sacrifice but rather part of his duty. “It’s just something that’s part of our corporate culture,” he said. “We just try to pay it forward.” Greer’s daughter more than once thanked him for allowing her to be part of the effort. “She said, ‘I will remember this for the rest of my life,’” he said. “That’s important for teenagers — when there is a call to action they will step up if you just ask them. We owe it to the next generation to show them what it means to be a responsible citizen and contribute.”

National Alliance on Mental Illness offers family program By Carie Canterbury The Daily Record The NAMI Family-to-Family peer support group balances basic education and skill-training with emotional support, coping strategies and empowerment for those who have loved ones living with a mental illness. The National Alliance on Mental Illness Southeast Colorado will host its signature, evidence-based, 12-week Family-to-Family course beginning Oct. 4. This course is for family members and caregivers of those who have mental illness. Attendees will learn about mental health conditions, current treatments and therapies, problem-solving and communication skills, coping strategies for worry and stress, advocating for a family member and much more. Taught by trained family members of people living with mental illness, these classes will help guide participants to know how to better understand and support their loved one while maintaining their own and their family’s well-being. Typically offered locally twice annually, this free and confidential course will be co-led by Yvette Thompson and Betty Johnson. Thompson said the Family-to-Family program is based on scientific-proven studies showing consistent results. “It offers validation of struggles families face, education to squash stigma and advocacy for consumers and loved ones,” she said. “NAMI dissolves

Johnson already has taken the class three times, and this time she will be a co-leader. “It really helped me with my son and his mental illness that came out when he was 19,” she said. “When I heard about the NAMI course, I ran as fast as I could and I have been quite attached to it ever since. It really helped me to

have the knowledge and to understand the brain a lot better than I did before. Knowing you are not the only one really helps a lot to not feel alone.” She also learned more helpful communication skills to use with her son, and she gained a great deal of support from other participants. Mary Derbort, the education coordinator for Fremont County, first took the class in 2001, and she plans to take it again in October. She has three close family members who live with a bipolar disorder.

“It helps in dealing with those people, and they seem so grateful that a parent or an aunt has taken the trouble to take the class and learn,” she said. Jan Steers, the president of NAMI Southeast Colorado, said having a loved one who has been diagnosed with a mental illness can make a person fearful of not knowing where to turn or where to get information, or how to cope with it. “This course answers all of those questions,” she said. “It’s a great help.” Derbort said many people with a mental illness are often in denial because of the associated stigma. “If you have cancer, you don’t mind telling your next-door neighbor you have cancer,” she said. “But you don’t tell people you are mentally ill because they start avoiding you, acting afraid of you.” The stigma carries to family members, as well, Thompson said. “It isn’t easy to share with people in public that you’ve got a family member with mental illness,” she said. “There is a lot of stigma attached to that label.” The class offers people a place to share their experiences in a confidential setting. The course will be in Canon City from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays, from Oct. 4 to Dec. 20. The group is open to individuals ages 18 and older.
