Big Changes coming New Year for Hilltop Market! “We have had an amazingly long run. From January 1972 to January of 2018—Ray and I would have never thought that starting out that snowy day we would see our 45th year go by.” Carol and Ray Dunn and their daughter and son-in-law, Suzi and Brian Dieter are looking back on their long history at Hilltop Market in Canon City. With an eye to the future, the partners have announced that the grocery store and meat market will be closing soon after the New Year. “Several factors have played a part in our decision. The grocery business has changed with more people eating out, smaller families, and single person households. Folks just don’t cook and eat like they used to”, Ray says. “Our family wants to spend more time together while we can and need to adapt to changes.” The business location is not ending but changing the business plan to fit demand. Brian and Suzi will be adapting the Hilltop building on South Ninth Street to open a custom meat processing facility. Hilltop Custom Processing will strive for an opening in late summer 2018.

“As an avid hunter, I see a need for game processing in the area,” Brian said. “I had as many as 50 people looking for someone to cut up their deer and elk this past season. Hunters want a processing shop run by knowledgeable people who will treat the hard-earned wild game with care. We plan to process each animal individually so that the hunter knows that he gets back the meat he killed.” The Dieters will be capable of making sausage using all the tradition Hilltop recipes, both fresh and smoked. The popular pepperoni and teriyaki sticks can be made with the wild game. Ground meat and other cuts will be packaged to each families needs. In addition to wild game, Hilltop Custom Processing will be able to process USDA slaughtered beef, hogs and other farm raised animals. For instance, 4-H beef will be processed with the same guarantee that a family or buyer will get back the animals they grew so carefully. Carol states “Ray and I are ready to relax and encourage Suzi and Brian in this new venture. We can see their excitement to start this business and know that they will have more free time for their boys, as well as us and Brian’s parents, too. In Loving Memory Earl “Butch” Eugene Byrd Butch Byrd passed away suddenly on December 19. Butch was born on August 31, 1952 in Quincy, Illinois to Earnie and Louis (Snyder) Byrd. Butch lived a full life taking joys in the simple things. He was always joking around and could make just about anybody laugh. He was a huge fan of rock and roll music and played his bass guitar in the band NightShiftthroughout the seventies. Butch loved to be outdoors. Hunting and fishing in the mountains surrounding Canon City with his close family which included his father, brother, and sonin-law. He was a die hard Broncos fan through and through, but his favorite thing in life was his family. He was constantly surrounded by all his nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and his cat “Dipshit”, whom he adored. Butch was preceded in death by his parents, brother Johnny and his son John. He is survived by a large loving family which includes his wife Johnna, daughter Jeanelle (Mike) Goff, their children Josh and Anna, his brother Rick (Wanda) Byrd, and his sister Inez (Bob) Miller. St. Thomas More Hospital is offering a “What to do When a Friend Goes Down” Motorcycle Crash Course to help individuals learn how to respond at the scene of a motorcycle crash. Elsie June Bonner Elsie “June” Bonner, 81, of Canon City, passed away Christmas morning after a lengthy illness. She was born July 5, 1936 to Spencer and Elsie (Hull) Finch in Phillips County, Kansas. She married Harrison Bonner, the love of her life, in 1957, and had two daughters. June worked for many years as the Assistant Manager at Gibson’s Discount Store. She loved her customers and would take time to speak with them and never hesitated to help them. She loved her job, doing puzzles, and was a die-hard Broncos fan, but more than anything she loved her family. After retirement she spent most of her time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The past few years June devoted her attention to caring for her husband Harrison, who passed away in 2017. She is survived by her granddaughter, Tami Best; grandson, Harrison (Lindsey) Best; great-grandchildren, Tylor Best, Shealyn McBride, Kaylee Best; nephews, Lyle (Caren) Finch, Paul (Angie) Finch and sister-in-law, Peggy Finch. She is predeceased by her husband; daughters, Peggy Douglas and Debby Best; brother, Lee Finch and nephew, Adam Finch. At her request no public service will be held. Michael “Mickey” Paul Riddle Michael “Mickey” Riddle, 70, passed away December 23, 2017 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Essay contest winner gives prize away By Sara Knuth The Daily Record Business owner John Zimmerman said his custom Stingray bicycle had spent nearly a decade of changing hands after going through a process of being purchased and sold at auctions. “People had purchased it and auctioned it and donated it and auctioned it, almost like a traveling trophy,” he said Dec. 6, shortly after purchasing the bike through a Court Appointed Special Advocates auction. “But it came to a point that I think someone should get some use out of it.” By hosting an essay contest, he hoped to give it to a student who could write about how they planned to pay it forward in the future. Payten John, an eighth-grader at Harrison K-8 School, did just that, by writing that she planned to give the bike away again, to a young family friend. She was named the winner of the essay contest, hosted by Zimmerman’s Body Shop with the Cañon City Daily Record and Shopper. “I just thought it would be cool for a 10-year-old kid,” she said. “I thought I might as well give it to someone that would make some use out of it.” The boy’s parents did not want him to be named, but he was all smiles Friday as he took the bike for a ride inside Zimmerman’s Body Shop. Payten said she wanted to give the bike to him because she thought it would be a perfect fit.

Retiring DHS director honored By Sara Knuth The Daily Record As Steve Clifton departs from his role as Fremont County’s Department of Human Services, he leaves behind a legacy of 49 years in the field. The Fremont County Board of Commissioners recognized those years Dec. 26 by reading a resolution into official record. “Steve Clifton provided Fremont County and its families with his valuable and trusted expertise in human services for decades, culminating in almost 49 years of dedication to the field,” the resolution, read by commission chair Debbie Bell, said. Clifton, who started the field in 1969 and moved to Fremont County’s DHS on Feb. 1, 1994, officially left his position Dec. 31. He was replaced Jan. 1 by Stacie Kwitek-Russell, a Cañon City native who has been in a supervisory role at DHS since 2004. The commissioners also accepted the retirement of Linda Smith, a 30-year veteran of DHS who worked as the agency administrator, and of Denise Miller, a DHS employee who has been working for Fremont County since September 1991. Smith is set to be replaced by Wanda Embrey, who will be the agency administrator, and Kim Grondahl, who will be the finance administrator. When Clifton hands his role over to KwitekRussell, he will leave behind a legacy that includes overseeing the construction of the DHS building that opened in June 1995, getting appointed by Gov. Bill Owens to the Colorado Reform Oversight Committee, working on a collaborative effort to bring the Southern Peaks Regional Treatment Center to Cañon City, as well as several other accomplishments. Still, Clifton said he’s confident in the new leaders of DHS. “I think the new people are going to be excellent. They’re already being excellent,” he said. “It’s been a good time for me and time has passed quickly. I’ve enjoyed working with everybody.” When it comes to Smith’s DHS work, Commissioner Tim Payne said, “There’s dedication to your job, then there’s Linda Smith.” In a resolution, the commissioners recognized Smith for ensuring DHS “always was a good steward of taxpayer revenue,” and for “providing a calm, rational voice in the midst of occasional chaos.” The commissioners also honored Miller in a resolution, for working with “people in many walks of life while maintaining a high level of customer service.”

Kwik Stop sells to Alta Convenience Sale to Denver chain takes effect Jan. 3 By Sara Knuth The Daily Record After 41 years in business, the owners of Fremont County’s Kwik Stop convenience stores are selling to a Denver-based company. Alta Convenience, which owns several stores based in Colorado, is set to take over the eight stores, pending the final sale date Jan. 3. Dave McCallister and Alan Drake, the current owners and operators of the stores, said the chain plans to retain the company’s employees and managers, but as owners, they will no longer have roles in operating the stores. For McCallister, the decision to sell was simple: “It’s time,” he said. “For myself, this is my 45th year in business.” McCallister got his start in business with a grocery store in Penrose in 1972. In 1976, he opened a convenience store in Penrose with his parents. When his father died in 1983, he purchased his mother’s interest in the store. “We started slowly throughout the years adding locations,” McCallister said. Through the years, the company expanded to Florence and then to Cañon City. The most recently-added store was Cañon City’s Kountry Korner, which was acquired in 2013. Drake started working for the convenience stores as a teenager. “I had gone to work with Dave and Dave’s dad when I was 13,” he said. “I continued to work with them part time throughout high school. And then, in the summer 1983, I went to work full time at the Penrose location.” In 1996, Drake became a partner in the business. When the sale is complete, Drake said, he doesn’t have concrete plans but intends to keep working. When it came to selling to Alta, McCallister said the decision came down to the company’s reputation. “We feel they’re going to be a fit for Fremont County,” McCallister said. “We just feel like they’re very good

I think from the very beginning them saying that they would retain as many of our staff as they possibly can — that was important to us.” Currently, the stores employ 200 people, including those who work in Subway restaurants inside the convenience stores. Many of their employees have been there for several years. One manager, John Menefee, has been with the company for 30 years. Throughout the years, McCallister and Drake said, they have appreciated not only their employees but also their customers. “We’ve made a lot of good friends throughout our years in the business that are our customers,” Drake said. “Just seeing the family development of all of those people throughout the years has probably been the most rewarding.” The company also has been known
for its community involvement, ranging from $5,000 scholarships to a fundraising program for Cañon City High School and Florence High School called the Tiger Husky Discount Card. “We don’t want to be patted on the back, but we’ve always believed in giving back to the community, especially youth programs,” McCallister said. He also said he has appreciated all of the local customers and employees the stores have seen throughout the years. “One of my regrets is that I didn’t keep a journal as far as all of the people that have been employed by Kwik Stop,” McCallister said. “That would have been a fun thing to look back on.” Both men also thanked their wives, Cheryl McCallister and Linda Drake, for all of their support through the years as they operated the businesses. “We owe a lot to them for putting up with the rigors of a convenience store

business. There were many holidays that were interrupted,” McCallister said. “They were very understanding and supportive.” McCallister and Drake also have employed their own children throughout the years. McCallister’s son, Ryan McCallister, owns local Subway restaurants and Papa Murphy’s. His daughter, Megan, is a teacher but worked in the stores in high school. Drake’s sons, Jordan and Spencer, both also worked in the stores growing up. Spencer McCallister is currently the manager of the company’s Penrose location. As they plan to hand over operations, McCallister said he has looked forward to going to work every day. “Even to this day, there’s hardly a day I ever get up that I’m not anxious to go to work. So, I’ve enjoyed what I’ve done, enjoyed the people I work with,” he said. “Our staff is phenomenal.”
Briefly Boys & Girls Club Receives Taco Bell Grant The Boys & Girls Club of Fremont County was recently awarded a grant from the Taco Bell Foundation in support of their efforts to encourage and improve academic success among the Clubs’ members, as well as all youth across Fremont County. The club was fortunate to once again be a recipient of these funds and will be using them to further programs such as their ‘Member of the Month’ which includes academic components, and their daily ‘Power Hour’ homework help program. They will also, in conjunction with the local Taco Bell, hold an awards ceremony at the end of the school year to recognize all students and their academic success. The Taco Bell Foundation, as well as the Boys & Girls Club, is committed to working with all students to keep them on a path that leads to high school
graduation, and to help them succeed in all of their academic endeavors With this grant, the Boys & Girls Club will be able to provide additional resources and opportunities to foster academic success among all youth that they serve.
