ith spring around the corner and the promise of nicer days, now is the time to start planning for fun family day trips in Boulder and Northern Colorado. Check out our list of day trips around Northern Colorado that are perfect for the whole family. Fun required.

COLORADO MODEL RAILROAD MUSEUM

“Where a Miniature World of Wonder Awaits.” Take the family to the Colorado Model Railroad Museum in Greeley, and take in the 5,500 square foot operating model railroad that took more than five years and 280,000 volunteer hours to complete. Guests can walk through a real 1919 Colorado and Southern Caboose. Visitors can also view the Lionel Trains Collection. The best part of the museum is that everything is up close and personal, so even though it’s small, you won’t miss any of the details. CHAUTAUQUA TRAIL

Little legs can handle this family-friendly trail that is a 1.2-mile out-and-back path that takes you straight through the Chautauqua Meadow and ends with sweeping views of the Flatirons. If you’re with older kids, feel free to venture further along one of the many other paths that branch off from the trail throughout the Chautauqua area. Don’t forget when embarking on a hike with children, even a short one, to bring water and snacks and dress in layers. Don’t forget water for Fido, either. BUTTERFLY PAVILION

Famously known for its resident, Rosie the Tarantula, the Butterfly Pavilion in Westminster will give children a different perspective on invertebrates. Visit exhibits like Water’s Edge, where visitors can explore the diversity of underwater invertebrates. Visit Colorado’s Backyard, the newest interactive exhibit that connects guests to the Colorado ecosystem that surrounds them. Wings of the Tropics allows you to walk among free-flying butterflies in a tropical setting. See Rosie the Tarantula in the Crawl-A-SeeEm, where Rosie and other arthropods are available for observation in their native habitats. Feeling brave? Rosie loves to be held. Get out and explore some of the beauty Colorado offers with a day trip to Estes Park. Nestled in a mountain valley, Estes Park offers shopping in its historic downtown. Keep kids entertained by popping into one of the many ice cream, candy or taffy shops along the way. Stroll along the Cache la Poudre River. Feeling a little more adventurous than a stroll through the shops? Try a trail ride or white water rafting in the scenic mountains. Try the Open Air Adventure Park in Estes Park, with elements like rope bridges, aerial tightropes, swinging log steps, and moving platforms. ROCKY MOUNTAIN NATIONAL PARK

While you’re in Estes Park access entry to the Rocky Mountain National Park and spend the day exploring Colorado’s own National Park. Be prepared for drastic weather changes throughout your day trip, which can be part of the fun, but only if you’re prepared with layers. Whether hiking some of the more than 300 miles of hiking trails, horseback riding or driving the mountain roads, you’re likely to view wildlife. he YMCA of Northern Colorado is stepping up in a big way to bring “pure summer joy” to the kids who need it most, said Andra Coberly Webster, executive director of communications at YMCA NOCO. She explained that this summer, with assistance

from local donors and business sponsors, YMCA NOCO will not only provide financial aid to 500 campers as usual, but they also hope to offer camp scholarships to an additional 250 kids affected by the Marshall Fire. “If anyone needs a break from the stresses and strain of trauma, from COVID to the loss of a home or not being able to return home due to the fire, these kids do,” she said. “We were a Red Cross shelter during the fire, and our Lafayette

Y saw firsthand what hundreds of families and individuals were going through,” she said. “As one of the largest childcare providers in northern Colorado, we see it as our duty to support our families, and this summer we want to go above and beyond our normal ability to serve kids in need.” Thus, YMCA NOCO has set the ambitious goal to quickly raised $800,000, the amount required to fund 250 campers and to train staff to help children process their unique emotional and social challenges. “We want kids to be kids,” Coberly Webster said. “We want them to move and run and be in the sunshine and play, to step away from what’s hard for a bit.” She added, “We will ensure that our staff has the techniques and tools to best support these kids while they’re in our care.” The scholarship program will apply to YMCA’s day camps throughout northern Colorado, with locations in Lafayette, Loveland, Longmont, Berthoud and Johnstown. While camp program hours are from 9 am to 5 pm, childcare and staff-led activities extend from 7:30 am to 5:30 pm. “It has always been our goal to meet the needs of working families. That’s why we offered emergency childcare through COVID, and that’s why we’ve continue to evolve our programs to help families,” Coberly Webster said. Children entering kindergarten through sixth grade can register for an entire summer, one week or a

mix of programs and weeks. Most YMCA locations feature traditional summer camp activities, such as swimming, archery, arts and crafts, games and sports; others include specialty camps such as sports camp, Y rider cycling camp and the only exclusively half-day option, the steamrollers camp focusing on science, technology, arts and math. Camp registration is already underway, and about 600 children are expected to attend each week across all YMCA NOCO locations. “Families are eager to get their kids involved, active and connected again, and we’re pumped to give kids a great summer,” Coberly Webster said. “We have a fun curriculum planned to make sure kids are exhausted and happy and probably dirty by the end of the day.” Those interested in a scholarship for a child impacted by the Marshall Fire may reach out directly to Lisa.Swainey@ ymcanoco.org at YMCA NOCO. “We are working with families on a case by case basis to find out what they need and how we can best help,” Coberly Webster said. “We believe in the healing power of camp and are doing whatever we can to raise funds to help as many kids as possible.” To donate to the Marshall Fire camp scholarship fund or to learn more about how to sponsor as a business, visit champforcamp.org. through trying new things, mastering skills and overcoming the fear of failure. The girls participate in outdoor adventures, like races, scavenger hunts and team-building activities, and engage in arts and crafts projects using natural materials, such as making organic chapsticks and beeswax and creating nail art using a hammer and nails. Some of the girls who don’t think of themselves as artists find they can be creative and get a sense of accomplishment, Peglar said. They feed and care for the farm animals, getting exposed to them on a daily basis and developing a relationship with them, she said. “Animals are such an important part of the human experience. etting away from screens and going outside gives children countless ways to think, discover, be creative and problem solve while also being more active. They can attend a camp, visit a garden, engage in farming and work with animals as they extend their learning into the summer. Northern Colorado organizations like the Juniper Hill Ranch Camp, Growing Gardens, Friends School and Longmont Humane Society give your kids multiple

opportunities to learn alongside animals and nature.

JUNIPER HILL RANCH CAMP

The Juniper Hill Ranch Camp in Longmont combines a summer camp atmosphere with learning about ranch life through the Juniper Hill Ranch Camp for Girls, geared to girls ages 8 to 12. The camp is offered in four eight-week sessions in June and July and is limited to 12 girls per session. Campers take part in outdoor activities, participate in arts and crafts and learn about animal care at the 10-acre working ranch, which

has eight sheep, 10 chickens, two ducks and a bunch of barn cats. “Spending time with animals, you start to realize how interconnected you are with the natural world around you. You realize how much power you have to make a difference in your community and the world,” said Tori Peglar, founder and director of the Juniper Hill Ranch Camp. Peglar founded the camp in summer 2019 as a pilot program, then had to put it on pause during the COVID-19 pandemic until this summer. She wanted a way to help girls improve their confidence

Growing Gardens offers a summer camp for kids among its many programs held at the 11-acre working farm founded in 1998. There are canning, cooking and nutrition classes and ways to get fresh, local produce out in the community through a community garden, a produce farm stand and food and plant donations. The Children’s Peace Garden teaches gardening to children ages 5-11 in a hands-on kind of way through summer camps, field trips, classes and an afterschool garden club. The garden represents a small sampling of the produce and fruit trees grown on the larger working farm with raised garden beds, an herb garden and even a circular pizza garden with the ingredients for pizza. Children learn about the sources of food they eat and what’s involved in organic gardening, as well as the importance of biodiversity and environmental stewardship. The summer camps are offered in nine week-long sessions June to August and are geared to children ages 5 to 11. Campers tend to the garden and make snacks from what they harvest.

“Each week offers a different theme with a garden lens on it,” said Megan Reynoso, education program manager of Growing Gardens. “They get a little bit of empowerment to take care of the farm.” The field trips enhance the elementary science curriculum with a set of 15 different lessons focused on organic gardening practices, local food and biodiversity. Students get a personal connection with the source of their food, while also exploring what’s around them, sometimes without structure. For instance, they may be handed a magnifying glass and asked to find what they can in 15 minutes. “They get a chance to be detectives and wander around a little more than they get to in a classroom,” Reynoso said. “Giving kids tools to explore in nature can lead to its own type of learning.” > growinggardens.org

LONGMONT HUMANE SOCIETY

FRIENDS SCHOOL BOULDER

Friends School Boulder is a private PK-8 school that offers afterschool and summer programming, including a preschool backyard camp in June and weekly camps with classes in theater, cooking, science and art over six weeks in June and July. The weekly camps, for ages 3-14, can be a half-day or full day with different sessions offered in the morning and the afternoon. “We try to do as much as we can outside to get kids in touch with nature through all the activities we offer them,” said Ailish McAndrew, auxiliary programs manager for Friends School Boulder. “It helps them form a connection with the world around them.” One of the most popular camps is Birdhouses & Fairy Gardens, where campers learn how to design and make a birdhouse and outfit a fairy garden. They learn about backyard ecosystems and how to identify different types of birds and how a birdhouse can be beneficial for birds. They also make small homes and furnishings for fairies and magical creatures out of rocks and other materials to create a fairy garden. Another camp is Creative Cooking, where students learn basic cooking skills using vegetables and herbs from the school garden. They learn about mixing, cooking and food presentation. “The camps focus a lot on nurturing a relationship with the natural world,” McAndrew said. > www.friendsschoolboulder.org

The Longmont Humane Society, in its 50th year this year, offers a summer camp for children ages 7-12 called Kids & Critters. The half-day mini-camp is over three days and is offered in five sessions June to July. Lessons focus on safe animal-handling skills and animal care, welfare and safety through interactive animal-themed games, activities and guest presentations. “They learn about animal behavior and understand when and how to approach animals,” said McKenna Wood, humane education and development coordinator for the Longmont Humane Society. Campers learn about responsible pet ownership, including the importance of spay and neuter surgeries and microchipping, what kind of careers involve animals and what staff does at the shelter to care for the animals, including surgical processes, behavioral evaluations

and training. The participants also learn how to photograph animals, something the shelter does for all of its new arrivals. “It’s really important to educate kids about animals in order to instill good habits and a positive attitude toward animals at an early age,” Wood said. “We also love having kids here and we love to have fun.” > longmonthumane.org

Rich in History, Fun and Friendship

t its heart, Gold Hill’s Colorado Mountain Ranch Camp is a community resource. A day camp that serves the surrounding local community, including families who can afford the full tuition, and those who cannot, it was established in 1947 as a place for kids to experience physical, mental, social, and spiritual growth. The camp boasts a rich history, including devastation in the wake of the 2010 Fourmile Canyon Fire and surviving the COVID pandemic. Now, with support from both the local community and federal grant funding, they continue to provide a supportive environment where kids can learn about themselves and the world around them while having fun and making friends. Founded in 1947 by Coach Walker, a Texas gymnastics coach, and his wife, Norma, a high school teacher, as a place for kids to escape the Texas heat, Colorado Ranch Mountain camp is now a day camp offering various different programs for youth. Now, 75 years later, its core values

remain the same. “Today the mission builds on its original foundation and expands to highlight simplicity, nature, connection, and fun,” says owner and director Lynn Walker. For Lynn Walker, the camp owner and director — and many who spend time there — the camp connection runs deep. She spent her first summer there in 1970. The rest, as they say, is history. “I fell in love with the place, the people, and the programs, and then looked again at the owner’s son, Mike Walker,” she recalls. “We married three years later, and along with Mike’s sister Gail and our young adult daughters, we’re still here!” The Walkers aren’t the only ones that have made Colorado Mountain Ranch Camp a family affair. Walker says that many of their campers are the children and grandchildren of former campers. “Old campers and staff members from many decades ago often stop in and tell us how their camp experience was a huge influence in their lives.” But it’s the camp’s rich history and traditions that set it apart, says Walker. “There is continuity in the community of people, horses, and

programs. The magic of the place children can call their own gives them security beyond the usual in today’s world.” Not only that but while the campers spend their days there, the staff lives there all summer, which Walker says helps them build a more cohesive team — and a stellar environment for the kids. Campers range in age from second grade to 12th grade and can participate in various different tracks, depending on their age and interests. Explorers offer kids a taste of everything camp has to offer. Mountaineers give campers the chance to dive deeper into various activities, including archery, outdoor living, and nature experiences, and includes off-site adventures including wilderness hiking. Western Riders focuses on riding and working with horses. And the Counselors-in-Training program offers older campers the chance to hone their leadership skills. Regardless of which program they enroll in, kids delight in the opportunity to create lifelong friendships and memories while participating in a wide array of activities. The camp is known for offering horseback riding for all ability levels, however, kids can also try arts and crafts, archery, mountainboarding, gymnastics and trampoline, outdoor living skills, drama, disc golf, nature immersion, friendship bracelets, Western art, roping, and a variety of games, sports, and other team-building activities. New for 2022 is the “Stories” program, where campers will learn the art of storytelling through telling their own stories in small groups. The Colorado Mountain Ranch has a dramatic story of its own. In September 2010, the Fourmile Canyon Fire tore through the campus. Walker recalls, “Mike Walker [Lynn’s husband, Coach Walker’s son and camp co-owner] beat down flames to save the Lodge with a loader bucket, dirt, and by beating with a rug. For about two weeks after, we roamed the property putting out spot fires with water sprayed from backpacks.” The fire damage was severe, burning down a lot of forest and many buildings, including the barn, workshop, and all its tools, and the Walker family home with all the family’s belongings,” says Walker. “This allows us to commiserate from a place of firsthand shared experience with our community’s current fire victims.” In fact, in the aftermath of the Fourmile Canyon Fire, she says the property resembled much of what we’re seeing in the wake of the recent Marshall Fire. “The landscape was totally charred. Vehicles, equipment and buildings with all their contents were burned to the ground.” The Walkers moved into the old log lodge, a summer building she calls the “heart and soul” of camp. “Once electricity and phone service was restored, we were able to focus on the future and rebuilding. The camp was grateful for the outpouring of community support that allowed them to build a new barn just in time to open for operation in 2011. The only time they’ve had to shut their doors in more than 70 years was in fact, in 2020 due to the pandemic. Today they are proud to be the recipients of a pandemic relief grant from the Colorado Department of Human Services. The funds, which were allocated to help stabilize licensed child care facilities, will widen access to camp throughout the community and are hugely welcome after the 2020 season when they couldn’t open at all due to COVID, and following 2021 when COVID limited their capacity. According to Walker, the grant money will allow them to waive fees for families who lost their homes in the Marshall Fire. Knowing firsthand how devastating it is to lose your home in a fire, it wasn’t hard for the camp’s management team to make the decision. And the more kids who can experience camp, the better. “The campers experience joy in simple things,” says Walker. “They learn and grow a lot, yet to them that’s incidental to all the fun!”

One of Boulder County’s most respected cultural institutions also offers an educational option for aspiring young performers. Every summer, the Colorado Shakespeare Festival and CU Presents (cupresents.org) welcomes students ages 6-18 to CU Boulder’s campus to study Shakespeare in a professional setting.

Camp Kind: Summer Camp With a Purpose By Katie Feindel

ummer camp is a highlight of any kid’s year. The school year can be demanding and summer is the one 11-week break from the rigors of structure and demands. Some kids go to camp to hone and refine a skill or hobby, while others just go for recreation. Some of the fondest memories of childhood are from camp. Camp is also a place where kids can relax and let their hair down. But, what if there were a camp that offered more? At Camp Kind there is an opportunity to have a blast and learn the ‘art’ of giving back, volunteerism and philanthropy. Camp Director, Benjy Brackman, created this dynamic concept of Camp Kind 7 years ago. Benjy feels strongly about the camp’s role in the life of a child and teen: “Here at Camp Kind, we offer fun and a purpose. It is a learning opportunity that carries over into the kids’ adult life. So often, a child’s and teen’s summer break is just about learning new skills and having fun, but what we teach is that a child can find satisfaction in giving to others. It’s more than just taking them to a food bank to volunteer, but that’s part of it. It’s teaching the kids that they can have an impact and contribute to a person’s wellbeing through acts of kindness.” But, don’t be fooled, what Benjy and his staff are implementing is set in fun activities for the kids too, Summer 2022

like exciting trips, sports, crazy hat day—and so much more! All in all, Camp Kind is a great choice for any youth. It also offers the campers the opportunity to consider volunteering on their own or with their parents during the year, and in their adult life, when they can offer additional services and skills including being philanthropically involved in the community”. The performance running shoe has an aggressive trail outsole designed for a wide variety of uses. It can be worn to run around the playground, ride a bike, hike and do lots of other activities.

THE KEEN TARGHEE MID WATERPROOF This boot is a mid-hiker with the same outsole as the Ridge Flex. It does not fit as wide as the Ridge Flex and is a great option for a lightweight hiking and town uses.

NEWPORT SANDAL

This sandal is a versatile footwear option for kids and adults that’s great for going from the playground to the trail and doing everything in between. It’s machine-washable and has closed-toe protection and a breathable waterfriendly upper. It comes in whole sizes only and fits on the wider side of medium. ids likely will need new shoes not just for school but for all those summer activities. They might need sandals for cozy comfort and tennis shoes, hiking boots and all types of footwear for their sports and outdoor adventures. “It’s really important that we measure both of the children’s feet when trying on shoes,” said Jason Wetzel, managing partner of Brown’s Shoe Fit in Longmont. Wetzel recommends selecting proper footwear for the intended use and trying on socks that will be worn with the shoes. The sole of the shoes also should be considered, such as an aggressive outsole with a deep lug or tread pattern for something like trail running. The traction helps with slippery and off-road, unpaved surfaces. Other considerations include waterproofing and versatility, such as closed-toe sandals that can perform as athletic shoes. The closures can vary, too, including traditional shoe laces, Velcro closures, bungee laces that stretch and adjust using a toggle, and BOA alternative laces that allow adjustability in the mechanical closure system. Shoes also should be checked for quality. Make sure the sole is rubberized or has an added platform to the outsole for an additional layer. Double stitching is more durable than single. Summer Reading Offers Immense Benefits for Kids By Linda Thorsen Bond

ummer can be a slippery slide, but not in a fun way. According to the Colorado Department of Education, “summer slide” is the tendency for students, especially those from low-income families, to lose some of the achievement gains they made during the previous school year. The cure is simple and the remedy is free. Summer slide can be healed by a strong dose of summer reading. Diane Lauer, assistant superintendent of Priority Programs and Academic Support for St. Vrain Valley School District, is a big proponent of reading. She said, “We have seen that young children who don’t engage in summer reading are often outperformed by other students. We know that the most dynamic changes in academic improvement take place in the early years, and as students get older, their gains in reading achievement become smaller each year. We know children who do read over summer are often able to close the achievement gap and are able to perform better in the upcoming year.” The St. Vrain district has prioritized reading strategies. Every student from kindergarten to 12th grade has an iPad and they are encouraged to take it home over the summer. One of the nation’s largest digital libraries is available to students so they can read digital books. When they return to school in August, there are awards and incentives for students in schools that had the highest number of minutes of reading. “The digital library is part of our culture,” Lauer said. “It’s a wonderful tool. Even if students go visit their grandparents in

Public Library takes the bold step of offering incentives for summer reading and experiences. Anne Ledford, Youth Services Manager at Main and co-chair of summer learning program at the Boulder Public Library, explained that during the Summer of Discover program students get either a paper or digital log to track their reading and the accomplishment of experiences. When they have completed their goals, they get prizes such as Cold Stone Creamery coupons or passes to a park or recreation center. That way they get two experiences. Claire Studholme, head of the Children’s and Teens Department at the Longmont Public Library said, “Each summer reader gets a BINGO board with various reading and activity challenges to complete. Once they get a BINGO or a blackout, they earn a brand-new book prize at the end of Summer, free book coupons from local Longmont bookstores, and an entry into several special prize drawings. There’s no registration necessary, you just pick up a BINGO board at the Library or print one from our website starting May 26.. Youth services librarians are currently planning a number of fun events, including a Summer Reading Kick-off party on our patio with special guest appearances from therapy dogs and ice cream to enjoy. We are also planning a few performances from musicians and magicians as well. Our Teen volunteer program will be going strong this Summer as well as our D&D group and the return of our Nintendo Switch gaming club. And we are still working on specialty science programs for elementary school kids. This is all in addition to our weekly storytimes! Our Bilingual (EnglishSpanish) storytime has reached many people virtually who can’t make it into the Library and we hope to at least have some new virtual Bilingual Storytimes for kids and their caretakers to enjoy on our Youtube channel, youtube.com/ cityoflongmont, we also have reruns of Baby and Family Storytime available as well. Something that was super successful for us during the past two years has been “take-andmake” craft kits for young children, we gave out thousands of kits last year alone, and so for those who don’t want to do too much in person, we will have craft kits available throughout June and July for families to take home and enjoy together. Lauer said Project Launch is a full day, no cost extension of the school year with transportation, breakfast and lunch provided. “It is open to any student who would like extended learning opportunities in the summer. We do encourage students who are reading below grade level to sign up,” she said. Last year 25 percent of K-5 in the St. Vrain district, or over 3,000 students, took advantage of the extended summer school. Michelle Qazi, Director of Reading for the Boulder Valley School District, agrees. “It’s important not only for students but also for families to read with camp their students over adventure buddies summer. It’s important for families to read books to their kids that they wouldn’t be able to read otherwise. That exposes them to books they want to hear, helps them reach a higherlevel vocabulary, and increases their comprehension. WORK TOGETHER

Before heading to the store or heating up the oven, sit down with your loved ones and make a list of easy-to-make recipes you all enjoy. Each time you discover a new favorite, add it to the list so you’ll have a reference guide when it’s time to plan a week’s worth of meals.

STICK TO A SCHEDULE

sweet onion, diced jalapeno, diced Envy or Jazz apple, diced cups cooked shredded chicken flour tortillas ounces shredded Mexican blend cheese, divided can red enchilada sauce cilantro (optional)

Directions: 1. Heat oven to 350 F. 2. In skillet, cook onions until translucent. Add jalapeno and apple; saute 2-3 minutes. 3. Add cooked chicken and mix well. Remove from heat. 4. Lay out tortillas and sprinkle cheese on each. Add chicken mixture and roll. Place in baking dish and cover with enchilada sauce. 5. Bake 20 minutes, or until heated throughout.
