ooftop Rodeo is a PRCA sanctioned rodeo featuring professional cowboys and cowgirls from around the world. It is the NFL of rodeo! For more information on the PRCA organization visit www.prorodeo.com.

Estes Park Western Heritage, Inc. is a non-profit organization made up of volunteers from the local Estes Park community. They are the “boots on the ground” folks that make the Rooftop Rodeo and other supported western heritage activities popular events every year.

Estes Park Western Heritage, Inc.hosts a variety of events and activities in support of our western traditions and culture. Among these is

the award-winning Rooftop Rodeo, held every July at the Stanley Park Fairgrounds in beautiful Estes Park, Colorado. An annual Antique & Collectibles Show, “Beat the Heat” Barrel Racing series and new in 2014, Professional Bull Riding – Pro Tour challenge round out the summer events. Proceeds also help support the annual Western Heritage Youth Scholarship and the Rooftop Rodeo Royalty program.

Queen Ruth Walker owdy! This is Ruth Walker and I am your 2021 Rooftop Rodeo Queen. I am a member of the third generation of Walker cowgirls and cowboys to own Sombrero Ranches since 1985. When I was born my dad gave me my first pair mod pink boots and he always jokes around with me saying give a cowgirl a pair of boots and she can conquer the world. I find working at Sombrero Ranch a great opportunity to expand my range of equine knowledge.

My horse is named Stage, which is short for Stagecoach. He insists on being the star of the show-just like me. I attend Estes Park High School and am actively involved in sports including basketball, volleyball, and track. After high school I plan to attend college to study agricultural business where hope to continue to pursue basketball in Nebraska at York College where I can continue my interests and activities while becoming closer with the Lord. My favorite quote is Proverbs 2:6 “For The Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.” I like this quote because all wisdom is from the Lord God and he gives it to whoever he will. Wisdom, knowledge and understanding are related aspects of the ability to judge right or to know the right moral or practical solution for unique dilemmas or situations. The world has so many blessings for you to enjoy.

his summer, five local women are competing for Mrs. Rooftop Rodeo’s Crowns for the Care Competition. The contestant who raises the most money will be crowned Mrs. Rooftop Rodeo 2021. As with other Paint Estes Pink activities, 100% of donations benefit cancer diagnosis and treatment at Estes Park Health.

This year, contestants are raising money to purchase a new MRI machine at EPH. MRI is often used to diagnose certain forms of cancer.

s the Executive Director of EPH Foundation, I’ve been privy to the generosity of this community through individual, corporate, and foundation giving, and I’ve had the great fortune of observing how those funds directly impact the quality of health care available in the Estes Valley. Next month, EPHF’s biggest fundraiser of the year, Paint Estes Pink, takes place. Paint Estes Pink relies on local business participation to support Oncology Services at Estes Park Health.

Business Competitions for Paint Estes Pink take place July 2-9. For the Top Fundraiser Competition, the Estes Park Mountain Bike Team will drop off donation jars to local businesses on July 2 and pick up July 9. Every business that participated in 2019 will automatically receive a collection jar. The business that collects the most cash in

collection jars and/or through online donations will win a plaque with their name engraved to display for a year.

The following paragraphs taken from the July 9, 1908 edition of The Mountaineer document the fact that the history of rodeo in Estes Park did begin at least as early as 1908. As you will read it was a glorious beginning indeed.

This early rodeo-type event had many of the same features as modern rodeo but with less sophistication. Take, for instance, the following description of the official judging of the bucking horse event.

The feature of the afternoon, of course, was the bucking horses. The horsemanship displayed in these contests, could scarcely have been better, and in the face of the riding done by all contestants, the judges threw up their hands and refused to go on record as declaring any one man the winner.”

Of course, today, the rodeo clown is an absolutely essential part of the rodeo. As the

following exert from the 1908 Mountaineer article demonstrates, the clown was also quite important. “…The real feature of the show, as far as fun was concerned, was A.G. Birch, dressed as a clown.

Scarcely a one on the grounds knew Mr. Birch in his strange rig, and his funny stunts filled every gap between the exciting events. The clown divided his time between a burro, wearing trousers of the national colors and a wooden horse, which he endeavored to enter in the bucking contest. When it became whispered around who the clown really was, there were repeated calls for his appearance, and he graciously responded.”

Behind the Chutes

ehind the Chutes is your chance to venture out to where all the action happens. You’ll meet the stock contractor, contestants and arena crew who will explain the sport of rodeo. Get an up close and personal tour of the arena equipment, participate in some mock events, see the livestock and meet the clowns. It’s a great time to ask questions and to learn more about the sport of rodeo from the pros themselves.

Tours are available at 5 p.m. Tickets for the rodeo and Behind the Chutes tours can be purchased online prior to rodeo week on the Rooftop Rodeo Tickets page.

ach night of the rodeo, 10 lucky cowboys and cowgirls will have a chance to compete in the exciting sport of mutton bustin. Six spots each night are offered to the first six kids to fill out an application for that night. To apply for one of these spots for your child, please fill an online application form at http://www.rooftoprodeo.com/mutton-bustin.html.

The remaining four contestants each night are chosen via a lottery. To enter your child’s name in the lottery for a given night, you may either fill out the application above, or fill out an application in person the night of the event.

In-person applications will be available beginning at 5 p.m. each night just inside the ticket gate. All applications received (online or in person) prior to 6pm each night will be entered into the lottery, and the four winning names will be drawn at 6 p.m. that night. If you have preregistered or entered the lottery online, you are required to check in at the mutton bustin table no later than 5:30 p.m. on event night to keep your spot, no exceptions. If

Charles Thomas, who was living in Lyons at the time, also participated in the Broncho Busting contest by bringing up a horse that was hard to beat. Johnny Malmberg and Charles Thomas were stalwarts in early Estes rodeo as evidenced by an Estes Park Trail (July 19) article in 1913 that described a bucking contest “…in which John Malmberg, on ‘Billy B.D’ and Charles Thomas on ‘Jerry’ were forced to split the purse of $10.00 on account of the failure of the judges to reach a decision. The broncho riders

gave a fine demonstration of the thrilling sport, both horses giving the spectators a run for their money.”

As indicated above, the term “rodeo” was not used in the early days of the sport in Estes Park. In 1908 advertising, it was the “Frontier Days”. In actual reports of the day it was a “Wild West Show” and simply a “Broncho Busting Contest”. This lack of formal show title can possibly be attributed to the fact that the major celebration was the Fourth of July-Independence Day. Broncho busting, horse racing and pie eating contests were all a part of the Independence Day celebration.

The use of the term Frontier Days is interesting and connects to a relationship between the ‘Daddy of ’em All’ rodeos, the famous Cheyenne Frontier Days. The first Cheyenne Frontier Days’ rodeo

was staged on September 23, 1897; thus to those planning the early Estes Park shows, the term ‘Frontier Days’ would have been well known to the new supporters. Actually, there still is a strong connection between Estes Park and Cheyenne that began in 1921 when over 100 members of the Cheyenne Boosters came to Estes (Flynn, 1996).

There were 100 Cheyenne residents plus 15 Sioux. The Sioux put on a dancing demonstration that was the hit of the day. In 1931 the annual trip to Estes Park included Miss Frontier Days and her Lady-In-Waiting. Today, Estes Park and the Rooftop Rodeo Committee are pleased and privileged to have the senior members of the Cheyenne Frontier Days Committee continue the tradition started in 1921 and attend the opening day of the Rooftop Rodeo.

The first time the term “rodeo” can be documented as being used in relationship to Estes Park is in a 1923 (August 24, page 12) Estes Park Trail article titled, ‘Wild West Show to be Staged at Stanley Field’. “Colorado Springs and other cities have been putting on rodeos for several years and Estes Park, not to be outdone, will break into the limelight this season with the most spectacular rodeo ever held in this part of the state.” (P. 12) In this article, a comparison with Cheyenne was made by the statement “Practically all features of the Cheyenne show will be staged.”
