(BPT) - There are a lot of decisions to make when it comes to driving, from which car is best for you, to how much is too much gas. Here are a few tips to keep yourself safe and your car on the road.

You may think that the biggest choice you’ll face when it comes to cars is which one to own. However, even after that purchase, there’s a plethora of other parts to ponder, like the tires. According to the latest installment of Hankook Tire’s Gauge Index Survey, Americans are more likely to consider the safety rating of their tires (26 percent) than that of their car (18 percent). body shop has an average of six weeks. Not only that, but you’ll have to pay your deductible and the value of your car will be diminished.”

In addition to these benefits, Hargett says his personal touch is what sets Hail Claims Experts apart from the other repair shops. “There are a lot of PDR shops out there, but it’s a wild industry,” he says. “It can be hard to reach someone or get your car to them for an estimate. I will come out to my customer and put my best foot forward. The guy that will work on the car is the owner of the company and the person customers will talk to: me.”

AARP FOUNDATION TAX-AIDE Available Now Through April 15 Annual free tax preparation service helps seniors file tax returns PRNewswire/ -- Beginning today and continuing through April 15, AARP Foundation is providing free tax assistance and preparation through its Tax-Aide program. AARP Foundation Tax-Aide is the nation’s largest free tax assistance and preparation service. Since its inception, the program has served more than 68 million taxpayers.

Tax-Aide started in 1968 with just four volunteers working at one site. How ‘life’ gets in the way and how to overcome the obstacles (BPT) - If you’re like many Americans, retirement planning may not be high on your “todo” list. When life is busy and you’re shouldering the burden of looking out for yourself and your family, setting up a retirement plan can slide down the priority list - especially if you’re hoping it will somehow be easier in a year, two or more.

But if you look at the root causes of inertia behind retirement planning, it’s clear how the effects from your behavior can be significant.

Below are some insights to help you get on track and better understand the kinds of behaviors that can get in the way of planning for your financial future.

Put simply, it’s overwhelming. Saving for retirement can feel openended and ambiguous, in large part because it’s difficult to predict just how much you’ll need.

Adding to the stress are many hard-to-anticipate variables, including how long you will live and healthcare needs. The good news is there are on-line calculators that can assist you in determining what your future needs may entail.

We can’t see our “future selves.” Researchers have found that people struggle to identify with their future selves, according to a study published in the Journal of Marketing Research. It’s not just young people who have difficulty imagining how long they’ll live in retirement - older Americans also often underestimate how long their retirement nest egg will have to last.

We procrastinate planning for retirement.

Research shows that for many people, procrastination plays a big role in hindering retirement planning. On average, we spend two hours a day procrastinating. In our busy lives, it’s often easier to daydream about our future than it is to spend time planning for it. The good news is that if you haven’t begun saving for retirement, it’s never too late to begin. Try taking a small step forward and consider setting aside 1 percent of your paycheck for a retirement account. Or, if you already have a retirement account but you’re saving very little, increase your contribution by 1 percent.

The bottom line is that it’s easy to underestimate the importance of retirement planning. The good news is that with more tools and innovation, people may be better able to achieve the financial future they hope for as they grow older.

Families have other future needs to plan for, such as their kids’ college education or saving for a down payment for a home. Add in the immediate need to cover day-to-day expenses, and it always feels like it’s “the wrong time” to save for retirement. The good news is that there is a great deal of information available online to help with retirement planning.

Most baby boomers approach retirement age unwilling to follow basic healthy lifestyle goals established by the American Heart Association, said Dr. Dana King, professor and chairman of the department of family medicine at West Virginia University, referencing his university’s 2017 study comparing the healthy lifestyle rates of retired late-middle-aged adults with rates among those still working.

Kaiser Health News interviewed three other prominent experts on aging and health about how seniors can find the will to adopt healthier habits.

“People do financial planning for retirement, but what about retirement health planning?”

King said.

Motivated seniors can begin by following KHN’s 10-step program:

1. Buy great sneakers.

walking, said Carolyn Rosenblatt, founder of AgingParents. com, who started participating in triathlons at age 63 and continues to do them at age 70. Start by walking around the block. Expand that to 30-minute walks at least three times weekly — or set a goal to increase your walking distance 10 percent each week.

And leave your sneakers by the front door.

2. Practice your balance.

The best way to avoid falls is to retain a good sense of balance, said Rosenblatt. Practice standing on one leg with your eyes closed for at least 30 seconds.

3. Improve your breakfast.

Stop eating the sweet roll with coffee. Consider substituting a home-blended smoothie with a banana, seasonal fruits, almond milk and protein powder or a protein patty without sugar. And cut out excess sugar in all your meals, said Rosenblatt. Replace soda with seltzer water.

4. De-stress wisely.

Find ways to manage your stress that don’t involve food, alcohol or smoking. There are

“Your muscles are amazing, but if you don’t use them, you lose them,” she said.

6. Hit the floor.

Aging adults need to regularly practice getting down on the floor and standing back up again.

“If you don’t get down on the floor and back up, you won’t be able to do it after a while,” said Van Norman.

7. Challenge your speed.

While it might not seem as if folks over 60 need to worry about exercise that involves speed and intensity, they do, said Van Norman. “Most people don’t even think about speed in order to stay healthy. But tennis players are doing that all the time. You need to do something to challenge your speed, not just your power.” That’s why sports like tennis can be terrific as you age, she said.

8. Believe in yourself.

Faced with self-doubt and depression after several tragic, challenging events, Sharon Sultan Cutler, 71, turned to therapy to help her feel better about herself.

“The first person you have to believe in is yourself,” said Sultan Cutler, an author. “People like to be around other people who believe in themselves.”

9. Tackle a project.

Pick a project that has meaning to you. Sultan Cutler opted to co-author (with two other writers) her first book, “Bandstand Diaries: The Philadelphia Years, 1956-1963,” an inside look at her once favorite TV show, Dick Clark’s “American Bandstand.”

Never mind that she’d never written a book before. Now she’s on her third book, “Your New You After 65: Valuable Advice to Inspire Your Awesome Aging.”

“It’s like having a daydream that you can actually make happen,” she said.

10. Embrace self-improvement.

Some call this lifelong learning. Living a healthier lifestyle requires constant learning and self-improvement, said Sultan Cutler. Seek out local learning resources like community colleges, where classes are often steeply discounted for seniors, she said.

“Self-improvement isn’t just physical. It’s mental, too.”

Helps Keep Seniors Healthy, New Study Suggests Older adults show reduced depression and loneliness, increased life satisfaction after serving as Foster Grandparent or Senior Companion PRNewswire—A new independent report that provides evidence that consistent volunteering can improve the health and well-being of people age 55 and older was released by the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), the federal agency responsible for the nation’s volunteer and service efforts.

The research examined how participation in national service contributes to changes in the health and well-being of Senior Corps volunteers in the Senior Companion and Foster Grandparent programs. Senior Companions help home-bound

seniors maintain independence and Foster Grandparents mentor young children in need.

“I’m thrilled with the release of this independent study because it confirms what we have long believed to be true: Senior Corps volunteers are not only improving the lives of others, they are also improving their own,” said Deborah Cox-Roush, director of Senior Corps. “These volunteers are feeling healthier and less depressed. What’s also exciting is they say they feel less socially isolated, which we

know has important health benefits. Along the way, Senior Corps volunteers found a sense of accomplishment, opportunities for personal growth, and chances to form meaningful relationships.”

According to the research, Senior Corps volunteers report much higher self-rated health scores (84 percent), which is considered a valid marker of actual health, compared to older adults in similar circumstances who do not volunteer.

They also reported feeling significantly less depressed and

isolated (78 percent) compared to non-volunteers. The companion study determined that caregivers found the assistance of Senior Companions beneficial (76 percent) and for some, the respite provided by a volunteer even improved their health (40 percent).

“Our Senior Corps volunteers have a decades-long history of setting examples for all of us to follow by serving our friends and neighbors,” said Barbara Stewart, CEO of the Corporation for National and Community Service, the federal agency that administers the Senior Corps program.

“These 220,000 men and women provide vital support to Americans, both young and young-at-heart, and reap health benefits in return. We are grateful for the generosity of our super seniors and their commitment to making a difference in their communities.”

GOOD SAMARITAN – LOVELAND VILLAGE plans an expansion to house even more active seniors

From its beautifully landscaped 50-acre campus, Good Samaritan Society Loveland Village enjoys a remarkable view of the majestic Rocky Mountains. This well-established retirement community is home to 400 residents ages 55 and older and provides a full range of housing options, depending on your lifestyle.

And this year—the year after they celebrated their 45th anniversary in Loveland—Good Samaritan Society Loveland Village is growing. A recent purchase of 25 acres just north of the current community will hold up to 47 new “twin homes” for 94 total residences.

Currently, Good Samaritan Loveland Village boasts 103 apartments, 104 skilled-nursing beds, 60 assisted-living units and 80 twin-home units, plus the planned 47 new units. The new twin-homes will have four size options ranging from around 1,200 to 1,800 square feet and will be designed with an aging in place mindfulness.

Like the other twin-homes amenities include on-site security, landscape maintenance, a 24-hour emergency call system, twice-monthly housekeeping, most utilities and transportation within city limits.

The proximity of the new additions to the existing 50-acre campus means that all residents will have access to the community that Good Samaritan has spent all of those 45 years carefully and thoughtfully building, including the new Town Center and refurbished Wellness Center.

Talk of the Town Center Growth is nothing new to

Good Samaritan. Last year they completed a 10,800-squarefoot Town Center “streetscape” where residents now enjoy easy access to a general store, café, library, and game room. After taking a fitness class, residents are invited to melt away the stress of the day at the on-site day spa while sipping a fresh squeezed something from the juice bar.

Turner points out, the town and wellness centers both create a sense of community because of all the spaces where people can relax and feel like they’re at home. She said the warm inviting design makes it easy to meet with friends and family.

People can visit the library or meet a friend for coffee in the 1,500 square foot space that’s run by Diane, a retired librar-

ian. On any given day, you will notice people quietly reading a book by the fireplace as they sink into the comfy chairs or surfing the internet on one of the computers.

Housing to Fit Any Senior Lifestyle

Residents at Good Samaritan Society Loveland Village are also able to choose from assisted living, in dependent apartments, or duplexes.

The assisted living option offers services like medication assistance, getting dressed and full meal preparation. They also have 24-hour access to on-site nursing staff. Loveland Village has 104 skilled nursing beds, including 14 memory-care rooms, and 60 assisted-living units.

“We provide housekeeping and laundry services for our assisted living residents and help them make doctor’s appointments, among other in-home care services” says Turner.

Apartments and duplex-style twin-homes, like those planned for the new expansion, cater to more active independent residents who enjoy the social benefits of living in a retirement community. Good Samaritan Society Loveland Village currently has 103 apartments in three buildings and 80 twin homes with 47 additional twin-homes being planned. in place, so once they move in they can plan on staying put for awhile.

“Residents in our twin homes and apartments receive housekeeping and maintenance services which includes fixing leaky faucets, yard maintenance, and snow removal,” says Turner.

All residents receive transportation services so they can plan a day of shopping or visit their doctor’s office. Plus, the dining room is open to all residents whether they live in twin homes and apartments or assisted living.

“We encourage all residents to share a few meals in our dining room while soaking up scenic views of the majestic rocky of mountains,” says Turner.

With a long list of activities and social outings, residents have no time to get bored at Loveland Village. Whether you want to catch a movie, listen to a concert or take in the sights at one of the local museums, Turner says residents have access to many activities.

But seniors now have a new option that allows them to reap the financial rewards of home ownership, as well as the joy of a vibrant community, without all the difficulty: The Village Cooperative of Loveland. “The Village Cooperative provides active adults (55+) a new housing option that offers them home ownership—and all the financial and tax benefits that go with it—without any of the headaches of maintenance, repairs or repair bills,” says Steve Von Schmidt, Marketing Director for The Village Cooperative. “Finally, there is a housing option for seniors and retirees that is affordable and yet has all the amenities they want in their next home.”

The Village Cooperative is a nation-wide network of senior cooperative housing communities, sometimes called “co-ops.” “While it’s not a new concept, it is new to ColoFebruary 24,2019

rado,” says Von Schmidt. “In fact, senior cooperatives have been around for over 40 years, primarily found throughout the Midwest.” Real Estate Equities Development, LLC, the development company behind the Village Cooperatives, has been pioneering cooperative housing communities since 1972.

There are two primary costs associated with cooperative living: the equity share purchase, which is a one-time payment based on the size of your home, and the monthly fee for operating expenses. Upon purchase of a dwelling, each individual within the community owns an equity share through a Cooperative Corporation. The value of this equity share will increase in a predictable way, appreciating at about 3 percent for every year that members live at The Village Cooperative. “The fact that the equity comes back to me and my family with a 3 percent equity annual increase, and the monthly payment includes all maintenance costs for much less than a local apartment’s rent, makes this a no-brainer,” says Village Cooperative member Teddy Wright. “Additionally, the social aspect is very important to me and I have already met other members who I know are going to be good friends. I can’t wait to move in!” Von Schmidt adds that the sense of community created

extends well beyond one’s specific neighborhood. “In fact, we have members that communicate and have developed relationships with members in other cooperatives,” he says.

Loveland, with its smalltown feel and active culture, made a natural choice for a Village Cooperative location.

“When we look to develop a new housing community for active adults, we carefully select the area using a whole host of data points,” says Von Schmidt. “But these communities don’t serve data points, they serve real people. That is why we are so excited about our Village Cooperative community that is coming soon to Loveland. It is an opportunity for residents in the area to stay close to friends and family in a fantastic location and still be active in the Loveland community.”

The Village Cooperative of Loveland will feature 58 homes available in a variety of spacious designs, from one bedroom/one bathroom to two bedroom, two bathroom homes, some with dens.

“Those who reserve early can choose their home’s interior finishes to suit their personal tastes,” says Von Schmidt.

Each unit is equipped with a washer and dryer, in-home storage, walk-in closets and individually-controlled HVAC systems. Starting at about 875 square feet, the units are carefully laid out in a secure, three story building that includes a number of amenities for
