Annual Larimer County Fair and Rodeo offers variety of fun starting Aug. 3

The annual Larimer County Fair and Rodeo will take place Aug. 3-7, offering a variety of events.

Carnival Americana, 4-H animal and arts competitions, a herding dog trial and the Draft Horse Show alongside other events will all be present at this year’s fair. The PCRA rodeo will be hosted in the Budweiser Events Center from Aug. 5-7 that will

include the Local Heroes Night honoring military and first responders, Parade of Champions and 4H Family Night and the Larimer County Fair & Rodeo queen coronation.

The Larimer County Fair parade will take place in downtown Loveland from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday, July 28.

The Larimer County Fair Board also invites the community to join them for a

complimentary pancake breakfast from 7 to 9 a.m.

Sunday, Aug. 6. Breakfast will be served outside the main entrance of the Ranch Way Feeds Indoor Arena. The event offers hot pancakes, ham and orange juice, according to the Larimer County Fair website.

There will also be live music throughout the Larimer County Fair. On Friday, Aug. 3, Delta Sonics and The Absolutes perform. On Satur-

day, Aug. 4, Uncle Punch, Archie Funker, Wild Mountain Music and Aberdeen will be playing. And on Sunday, Aug. 5, HotSocks and Benjamin Bell will be making an appearance. On Monday, Dixie Leadfoot and Amplified Souls will take the stage. And on Tuesday, Denver’s Thirsty 5 will perform.

Loveland loves arts of all sorts, but no art form is closer to the city’s heart than sculpture.

And no event celebrates that love affair like Sculpture in the Park, the two day sculpture bonanza held each year in the Benson Park Sculpture Garden.

More than just Art in the Park Music, beer garden to complement craft offerings

When Olivia Lowe took over as the lead organizer for Art in the Park last year, she knew she wanted to find ways to diversify the crowd at the event, which has been taking place for over 50 years. So this year’s she bringing in a main stage where she hopes higher-profile acts than the event has attracted in the past will drive new interest.

“Loveland and Northern Colorado are growing by leaps and bounds, and so it makes sense for big events like this to start to try to appeal to a wider demographic,” she said. “We have a younger group of people in their 30s and 40s moving here and having kids and not everyone wants to go from vendor to vendor looking at art but having a stage with wellknown bands and a beer garden with beer from Crow Hop Brewery is definitely an attraction for people.”

Among the bigger acts slated to perform on that main stage are Georgia country singer John King and Colorado indie folk band Herestofightin’ — which Lowe describes as a “pretty big deal.” Denver blues and rock band The Duke Street Kings and Cowboys Dead, which interprets rock and country hits with a Grateful Dead twist. Adding to the entertainment offerings will be Greeley painter Armando Silva, who will be doing live “performance paintings” at Art in the Park.

Organizers have also brought a renewed attention to AITP’s food offerings this year. Lowe said this year’s food court area

will consist of “10 unique options serving a wide variety of unique—and sustainable—food.” Such treats as homemade root beer and artisan popsicles will also be available.

“We’ve also moved the food court area so the food, music and beer are together so that’s handy,” Lowe said.

AITP is put on by the Thompson Valley Art League and acts as the primary annual fundraiser for the league and its Lincoln

Gallery. To allow easier access to the festival, five parking areas are being set up around town from which

shuttle buses will provide transportation to the festival grounds in North Lake Park.

Loveland sculptors partnered with the city and Chamber of Commerce to put on a sculpture show that would also act as a fundraiser for what became Benson Sculpture Garden. The show remains a fundraiser for the garden and its proceeds are used to purchase new sculptures and finance other improvements to the garden each year.

One of those founding sculptors, George Walbye, is also a member of the group of four sculptors who have shown during every year of Sculpture in the Park. That group also includes Garland Weeks, Jack Kreutzer and Dennis Sohocki.

“I think it’s a tribute to both the artists and the show that they keep coming back,” Elyce said. “We have a lot of artists come back every year and we try to make it a really wonderful event for them as well.”

The work in the show will also have a new flair thanks to the 26 sculptors who are showing in the event for the first time as well as the annual requirement that all artists bring work that they have completed in the last three years. All of the participating artists are also required to be in attendance, Elyce said.

“That’s unique and fun people get to talk to their artists and learn what inspired them and that kind of thing,” she said.

The Gnarly Barley Brew Festival is celebrating its “10 years of beers” anniversary this year from 1 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 4, at The Ranch Events Center.

There will be music throughout the event, featuring Archie Funker and Wild Mountain Music.

There will be a “new brewland” in the center of the event, which will “promote and welcome new breweries to the event,” said Budweiser Events Center marketing manager Mike Broschert.

At the festival there is a people’s choice award, which is the competition for the general public’s favorite brew the day of the event, and the homebrew competition that is hosted by High Hops. “A portion of every ticket goes towards a non-profit organization,” said Broschert.

Last year the Special Olympics was the selected non-

profit, and the organization for this year has not yet been determined. Tickets are sold before or at the event, and the VIP tickets to Gnarly Barley are sold out.

Parking and admission to the fair is free, but the PRCA rodeo, Carnival Americana, the dog show and pony show, among other events, are ticketed. Tickets are available online or at the Budweiser Event Center box office.

When the Loveland Sculpture Invitational shut down after its last run in 2014, many local sculptors worried about the hole that would be left in both Loveland’s largest artistic weekend and the town’s larger art scene.

But when several of the impacted sculptors contacted promoter Candy Vermillion about starting a new event to replace the LSI, she realized she had an opportunity to build a new tradition that would celebrate more than just sculpture.

Music fest brings big names, new acts to Fort Collins

Music festivals may be a dime a dozen these days but only a few of those events provide a chance to see big name acts — and even fewer provide that opportunity for free.

But that’s exactly what local music fans have come to expect from Bohemian Nights at NewWestFest.

The free music festival has been big-name headliners to its main stage in Fort Collins’ Old Town for 14 years as well as a massive lineup of local musicians in what has proven to be a winning formula for Northern Colorado music fans.

And the festival’s organizers say this year’s headliners are no exception.

“This year Saturday is the legendary Blondie, who really need no introduction but just in case — DEBRA HARRY!” NewWestFest organizer Debra Cornett wrote in an email. “And on Sunday we will be showcasing The Decemberists, whose new album is wowing both fans and critics with their catchy indie folk sound. They are definitely an established group that are reaching more mainstream success.”

Friday night, meanwhile, will be headlined by Denver jazz and funk fusion band Motet.

“They’ve been touring and creating new music for over 20 years now and they keep growing as artists,” Cornett wrote. “We are really proud to put this lineup together for Northern Colorado and hope everyone enjoys these artists as much as we do.”

Aw-shucks: Corn Roast Fest returns to downtown

The Old Fashioned Corn Roast Festival returns to downtown Loveland in August, with tens of thousands of people expected. This agricultural tradition began in 1894, showcasing the spirit of Loveland.

“This is a communitywide event that has been going on for over 100 years to bring our community together to celebrate all the characteristics of Loveland,” Loveland Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Mindy McCloughan said in an email.

The two-day festival will begin at 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 24, with a kick-off introducing the grand marshall and sponsors. There will be a corn shucking contest following the kick-off, where teams of at least seven members each will square off, with lots of laughter and cheers, to see who can remove as many husks as possible in heats of three minutes. The night will conclude with live music put on by Soul School, ending at 10 p.m.

Between 20,000 and 30,000 people are expected to attend the festival.

“We have ordered 7,000 ears of corn for this year’s event,” McCloughan said. “Our corn sponsor is Western States Bank, and they have secured the sweet corn from Schnorr Farms Inc. out of Fort Collins. This is the first year that Schnorr Farms Inc will be providing corn, due to the fact Sakata Farms no longer grows sweet corn.”

However, there will be no corn-eating contest this year.

There will be a corn hole tournament put on by the Stir Young Professionals group of the Chamber of Commerce. Corn hole is a friendly game in which two teams throw bean

McCloughan also said an Interactive Arts Festival in the Kid Zone will be taking place for the first time this year. Loveland artists will have tents set up for the youths to participate in art projects.

More than 200 volunteers will make this event happen, similar to last year’s count.

A parade with the theme of #Liveloveland, emphasizing how do you Live Loveland and showcasing all the wonderful things of Loveland, begins at 9 a.m. Saturday.

The parade route has changed due to the construction on Railroad Avenue near the fairgrounds park from the flood of 2013, said McCloughan.

The parade will stage on First Street (east of Lincoln Avenue) and will start on Lincoln and proceed north to Sixth Street, moving east to Washington Avenue and then south on Washington back to First. This same route was used for the 2014 Corn Roast Festival.

The event is free to the public, while food, drinks and other activities will cost tokens that can be purchased at the event.

Hot rods roll into town Aug. 24

The annual Road Knights Blue Light Special Car Show kicks off Aug. 24. The threeday event gives all who attend the opportunity to listen to live music and see hot rods and collector vehicles.

The Road Knights Car Club is putting on the event for its 35th year. The show gives car lovers the chance to go out and see some of Colorado’s finest vehicles for a $5 spectator fee. Anyone with a pre-1972 car may participate in the event for $24.99. Participants can partake in games and have the chance to receive prizes and awards.

For all who attend, a live band is featured on the Friday of the event.

Sweetheart City Racing takes over Valley 5000

Race will once again take place at Mehaffey Park

This year’s Valley 5000 race will be hosted by Sweetheart City Racing for the first time, but the run will once again help fund the House of Neighborly Ser vice.

The race will once again take place at Mehaffey Park, on Friday, Aug. 17.

The Kid’s Fun Run begins at 6 p.m., followed by the 5k race at 7 p.m.

“We have created a new course design to challenge returning members,” said the Sweetheart City Racing coordinator Sarah McWatters.

The Valley 5000 is the third of five races in Sweetheart City Racing’s Holiday Series. The next two races are the Nov. 10 BellRinger race, benefitting

the Loveland Housing Authority/The Edge; and the Dec. 15 ToyDrop race, benefitting Santa Cops of Larimer County. Runners who complete all five races will receive a special gift at the end of the year, McWatters said.

“We want to give you

something to strive for in 2018, so we created the Sweetheart City Holiday Series which will include all five SCR events,” Sweetheart City Racing website says.

Early registration for the Valley 5000 is $30 for adults and $20 for children 14 and under. The halfmile kids race will be $10.

On race day, admission is for $40 for adults and $30 for youths. Each runner will get a SCR VALLEY 5000 pint glass. To be guaranteed a pint glass, runners register by midnight Aug. 1.

Race day registration and packet pick up will be from 5:30 to 6:45pm.

Labor Day weekend in Loveland wouldn’t be complete without the presence of roaring motorcycle engines and blaring rock music. The Thunder in the Rockies bike rally will take place at Thunder Mountain Harley-Davidson from Aug. 31 to Sept. 3.

Thunder Mountain is putting on Colorado’s largest motorcycle rally for its 14th year. The event has an average attendance of 4,000 people each year. With dangerous stunts, live music, competitions, vendors and, of course, hundreds of motorcycles, the event is packed.

“We put it on for everybody to come and have a good time,” said event coordinator Mechelle Stanton.

More than 100 vendors will

be present at this year’s Thunder in the Rockies.

There are both local and national vendors, offering those who attend a variety of products and fun. It’s free for anyone to go shop the vendors, and unlike the concert and drinking area, has no age requirements.

A big draw to the rally is the nationally acclaimed musical acts performing. For 18 and up, each night a big name in

the music industry is set to play at the Thunder Mountain Amphitheatre. On Friday, former lead singer of Poison, Bret Michaels, will take the stage. Saturday will showcase the prominent rock band Tesla. And Sunday will feature Nashville country group A Thousand Horses.

Tickets for each night range from $35 to $45; and a pass for all three, from $75 to $95.

Denver country bar and dance hall Grizzly Rose has set up a 21-and-up satellite stage and bar at the event to host many of the entertainment acts throughout the weekend.

Music isn’t the only draw for amusement. Other opportunities for a good time include performances by female dance group the Flaunt Girls, death defying exploits by motorcycle stunt group the Busted Knuckles

Stunt Team, and a bikini bike wash. The brave also have the opportunity to ride a mechanical bull.

“New vendors and acts are always being put in. Stuff is being added all the time,” said Stanton.

Saturday gives bikers an opportunity to support a good cause with the Realities for Children bike ride. The ride is to raise money for the abused, neglected and at-risk children of Northern Colorado.

The hours for the event are noon to 2 a.m. Friday (into Saturday morning); 10 a.m. to 2 a.m. Saturday and Sunday; 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday.

The festival is also kidfriendly, with a kids stage that will host a variety of kid-centric performances and the Kids’ Music Adventure, a free interactive kids portion of the festival located in the courtyard in the southwest corner of Library Park.

At Kids’ Music Adventure, kids can interact with real instruments, see live musical performances and participate in music workshops. New this year is Build-a-Band, an activity that invites youths to learn an instrument, play a song and then perform it on the Kids’ Music Adventure Stage. Classes will be held from 11:15 a.m. to noon and from 3:45 to 4:30 p.m.

Trimby said the festival will also feature more than 30 on-site food vendors fea-

turing full meals, snacks, sweet treats and desserts.

Beer will be available from Odell Brewing Company, High Country Beverage and Coors Light while margaritas are available from Rio Grande Mexican Restaurant.

before 1972, in order not to have overwhelming numbers. The other reason for this is that cars must be made in or before the year 1972 in order for them to be considered collector vehicles in Colorado.

Awards will be given to the top cars in show. The awards are sorted into four categories: Top 10 street rods, top 10 street machines, under the age of 25 group, and top three trucks.

Participants also will be given the shot to receive prizes on Saturday and Sunday.

The prizes range from small car accessories to engines, transmissions and refrigerators.

The Roadknights Car Club is a nonprofit organization that donates to multiple causes and organizations.

Proceeds from the Blue Light Special will go toward scholarships for those chas-

ing careers in the automotive industry and to help fund the group’s car run for cancer in September. The club also sponsors local softball teams and Loveland’s Prom-o-Rama.

An eccentric attraction to the event is the blow-up car. A small block engine is placed in a 1939 Chevrolet and revved until the engine finally blows. The participants guess how long the engine will last, and whoever is the closest without going over takes all the money in the pot.

“Sometimes they smoke, sometimes they just run.

Sometimes it lasts under a minute, and sometimes it’s

over 30 minutes. You never know,” said Guffey.

This is the first year the event was put on without its founder, Dean Buhler.

Buhler founded the club 35 years ago, getting it to the status it is at now.

Buhler died May 6 at the age of 69.
