Don’t miss Loveland’s Winter Wonderlights™ festival. From Saturday, November 13, 2021 through Sunday, January 2, 2022 at the Chapungu Sculpture Park at Centerra in Loveland, just east of the Promenade Shops retail center at U.S. Hwy. 34 and I-25. Visitors are invited to stroll through the breathtaking park made even more enchanting by special holiday lighting displays.

On December 4, 11 and 18 from 8:30 to 10 a.m. you can have breakfast with Santa at On the Border restaurant to kick off your day for only $15. Appointments are available every night from 5 to 8 p.m. (although the event is closed to visitors on Christmas Eve and Christmas day). Featuring a chance to “build Christmas,” and plenty of photo opportunities, you can expect fun backgrounds like Santa’s house, the elf workshop, a vintage 1968 Chevrolet Christmas truck, and more! BERTHOUD SNOWFEST
Scheduled to bring light, cheer, and art to downtown Berthoud, the Berthoud Snowfest is brought to you by Main Street and Snow Creations. A selection of professional snow sculpting teams and amateur high school teams will compete in the 2021 event. Snow packing will begin December 6. Artists will begin carving their blocks on December 8 and complete their sculptures Friday night, December 10. the south end of the display area. Awards will be presented to the artists on Saturday evening, December 11 after all the votes have been tallied. Come to admire the snow sculpting creations and vote for your favorites. Stay for vendor booths, kids activities, caroling, tree lighting and the Santa parade. The parade will begin at about 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, starting at 2nd Street and ending at 8th Street. Santa will stop at Fickel Park to start the lights, announce winners of the sculpting competition and sing along with carolers. Event organizers request that visitors follow current CDC and County Health department mandates when visiting the sculptures at Fickel Park. According to Tim Hardy, the Main Street treasurer, the sculptures will be up for at least a week after the event, depending on the weather. “There will be plenty of time to visit the sculptures without a lot of people around or be able to drive by the sculptures the week following the event.” If you drive, he recommends heading south on 7th Street from Massachusetts. GREELEY FESTIVAL OF TREES Taking place at 701 10th Ave. in Greeley, from November 26 through Saturday, December 4, the nine-day long 2021 Festival of Trees is presented by the City of Greeley and the Greeley Philharmonic Guild. Don’t miss the chance to take in the delights; the first and second floors of the Union Colony Civic Center’s lobbies will be transformed into a winter wonderland, complete with beautifully decorated trees and displays. According to special events coordinator Andrea Haring, visitors will enjoy 37 individually designed trees, six Candy Cane Lane trees (decorated by children), and nine gingerbread houses in Gingerbread Village. Included with the price of admission are a live auction with over 50 items, kids craft activities, and on November 27 and December 3, horse wagon rides. Special events include Whoville Holiday, Teddy Bear Bash, and new this year, Watercolor and Wine. Taking place at the Monfort Concert Hall stage, Watercolor and Wine offers guests a unique opportunity to view the venue from the stage.

If the Windsor Wonderland isn’t on your radar, it should be. Scheduled to take place on Saturday, December 4 from noon to 5 p.m. at Boardwalk Park Museums and 5th Street (100 N. 5th Street, Windsor). Free parking is available in the Boardwalk Park parking lot, and the gravel parking lot South of the large parking lot, the event is jam-packed with activities for the whole family.
Featuring complimentary offerings including horse and carriage rides, s’mores and hot chocolate, face painting, balloon art, and fire truck rides, there is something to delight every visitor. And if that’s not enough, yard games and activities like a snowball mayhem area, an appearance by the Clearview Library bookmobile, and craft activities for kids will keep you (and you little ones) entertained. Kids will have the chance to sit on Santa’s lap from 12:30 to 4 p.m. Stay until 4:45 for the annual tree lighting ceremony and holiday proclamation by the mayor. According to Lexie Spykstra, the Windsor recreation coordinator, the tree lighting ceremony’s light display will be bigger and brighter than ever. Spykstra says the Windsor Parks, Recreation, & Culture department is currently following the regulations set by the state and there are currently no COVID-19 restrictions in place for the event. Greeley Chorale lost the entire 2020 performing season due to the pandemic, but has reassembled with about 70 of their usual 85 members. They are excited about two upcoming holiday shows. On Saturday, December 4, the chorale will perform with the Greeley Philharmonic and Greeley Children’s Chorale in the Poinsettia Pops program at the Union Colony Civic Center. Larimer Chorale continued to meet with virtual rehearsals via Facebook live and Zoom during the pandemic, and the organization also offered some virtual concerts throughout the season. “We enjoyed finding new and innovative ways to stay connected throughout, which allowed us to maintain our original concert schedule, even though the concerts took place outdoors or online, rather than our normal venues,” says executive director Heather Smith-Bowman. Larimer Chorale will host their annual holiday concert, “A Candlelight Christmas,” on Friday, December 17, at 7:30 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church Fort Collins. The concert will feature excerpts from Handel’s Messiah, Handel’s Messiah: A Soulful Celebration, carols both familiar and new, as well as professional soloists. “I think the joy of sharing Christmas music will be even more delightful this year than past seasons, because we are all looking forward to celebrating the season together an in-person,” says Smith-Bowman. “I truly believe that the joy of the music will be made even better because of the connection of the choir to the audience, sharing the experience.”

The Windsor Chamber Chorale will host its Christmas concert on Saturday, December 5 at 4 p.m. at Cornerstone Baptist in Windsor. “We are extremely excited to be rehearsing again and we look forward to having an audience for our first concert in two years,” says treasurer Lainie Peltz. “We try to bring a little bit of joy through our choral music that people may not be able to find elsewhere for free. Donations are always greatly appreciated but we do not charge an admission fee.” Audience members are encouraged to wear masks at the performance, though singers will not be masked.

HANDEL’S MESSIAH COLORADO BACH ENSEMBLE After a hiatus because of the pandemic, the Colorado Bach Ensemble returns with its annual performance of Handel’s Messiah. This holiday tradition will take place on Saturday, December 18 at Griffin Concert Hall on the Colorado State University Center for the Arts campus in Fort Collins and on Sunday, December 19, at Bethany Lutheran Church in Cherry Hills. Both performances are at 4 p.m. The Fort Collins performance will be shortened because of venue time constraints, but the entire Messiah will be performed at Bethany Lutheran. I like to help her pick something with flair and pair it with something comfortable. Like a cute satin slip dress paired with a

A woman can wear it all holiday season from now until New Year’s and wear it to multiple things. It can be paired with a cardigan, or it’s cute with a blue jean jacket and cowboy boots. It can go with strappy heels for a fancy New Year’s party or with a sweater layered over it so it’s more casual.”

Children throughout Larimer County will soon be on the lookout for a jolly, gift-bearing icon. As the days tick into December, the anticipation becomes electric, with kids eagerly awaiting the arrival of presents packed in...a patrol car from one of many law enforcement agencies in Larimer County. No, that’s not a typo. For many children g toug gh times,, the season gleams and families facing a little bit brighter, thanks to the heartfelt efforts of Larimer County ty’s y Santa Cops. Founded in 1987 by cur-

rent Treasurer Kathy Louderback, Santa Cops is a non-profit organization consisting of representatives from Fort Collins Police Services, Loveland Police Department, Larimer County Sheriff’s Office, Colorado State Patrol, and Colorado State University Police, Timnath Police Department, and the District Attorney’s Office. The dedicated organization makes its mission to enhance the relationship between children and law enforcement within local communities for Christmas, and throug ghout the year,, working g to provide toyys for Larimer County tyy children in need. “Children need to experience offi fficers fi as caring people who are willing to provide positive support,” says Lindsay Panyko, Vice President of Santa Cops of Larimer County ty. y “Law enforcement interaction isn’t always positive. A child’s experience may be witnessing a family member get arrested, or incidents involving criminal activity tyy in their neighborhood. We do what we can

so they feel comforttable and safe, recognizin ng the goal of police is to protect.” In addition to promoting a positive relationship with children, Santa Cops do all they can to ensure that families feel secure in applying to be re-cipients of the progrram. “We’ree really unique in the ssense that a lot of chaaritable organizations reequire financial proof of need of assistance,” o Panyko says. “The only thing we require is proof of residency. For the second year the charitable arm of the Northern Colorado Homebuilder’s Association, the NOCO HBA Foundation, will be playing Santa for Northern Colorado children who might otherwise not see the jolly man himself. With joy, spirit and the generosity of their members and the community, the Foundation will be shopping for, and stuffing, backpacks full of goodies and essentials for delivery to local children through Realities for Children. “We had such a great response to Operation Backpack! last year that we decided to do it again,” says Foundation Chair, Kristie Schoellerman. “Our homebuilder’s association members and folks all over the community were so incredibly generous that we managed to assemble and deliver 431 backpacks last year and we’re shooting to do far more this year. The joy from both the ‘elves’ 26 NORTHERN COLORADO LIFE
and the children turned this project into an annual event for us.” The local non-profit places all of their efforts in the Northern Colorado area and welcomes volunteers and donors to join them. For Krazy Karl’s fans, holidays include traditional pies and wine and pizza pairings By JOHN LEHNDORFF for Northern Colorado Life
‘Twas was the night before Christmas, when all through the house, not a creature was stirring because they were all eating Krazy Hawaiian pizza by the slice and watching “Elf.” When it comes to holiday food rituals, some folks in Northern Colorado are sweaterwearing traditionalists, says Claudia FarfanLoroño. She and her husband, Nate Haas, have filled many “big” holiday season orders from regulars since they opened Krazy Karl’s Pizza in 2010 in Fort Collins.

“Colorado State University alums who have moved away tell us how much they miss our pizza and they can’t wait to be back for Christmas and order their favorites,” Farfan-Loroño says, adding that Krazy Karl’s once shipped two pies to New York City to a CSU graduate who got a job with the NY Jets. Which pies are the “favorites” varies surprisingly in regulars at the three shops in Fort Collins and Loveland.
A survey of Krazy Karl’s managers revealed that the best sellers at the Campus West shop are the North of the Border and Mile High pies. At the Timberline location, they are The Works and the Jalapeño Popper pizzas. Meanwhile, Loveland regulars vote for Old World Pepperoni and the Mediterranean. Pairing great wines and craft ales doesn’t have to be reserved for upscale meals. According to Farfan-Loroño, the casual food we crave can find its ideal beverage mate. It doesn’t have to cost a month’s rent or be bottled two thousand miles away, either. “I love our house salad with boneless chicken wings

tossed in sweet chili dressing and pair it with Loveland Aleworks sour,” she says. Krazy Karl’s beverage menu (now available for takeout and delivery) puts a strong spotlight on locally produced beer, which is always easy in Colorado, as well as wine. The eatery features wines from OBC Wine Project, a tasty extension of Fort Collins’ 30-year-old Odell Brewing. While there are no hard and fast rules about food pairing, some tastes just naturally go better with one another, says Claudia Farfan-Loroño.
The White Pizza with The OBC Rose Wine
For true pizza aficionados, the white pizza is the ultimate treat because they get to really appreciate the crust. Krazy Karl’s chewy yeasty crust soaks in a pesto-like olive oil, basil, and garlic spread as it bakes under cheese with olives, mushrooms, artichokes and tomato. This perfect pie for a classy New Year’s Eve gathering requires a bubbly. Farfan-Loroño suggests OBC’s sparkling rosé which has all the appeal of Champagne with none of the silly cost. It’s always nice to toast locally and beat the supply chain.

whenever winter finally appears measures and planning for a safer winter driving season. “The biggest priorities are proper tires, plus your car’s battery, starting system and cooling system,” Moyer said. “We want to ensure traction on the road, see if your vehicle will start and if the system is healthy, and also make sure that your cooling system is well protected.”
By ANDY STONEHOUSE for Northern Colorado Life While it has been an unusually un-wintery year so far in the Front Range, heavy snow is always a possibility – and always seems to catch drivers by surprise when it finally appears. But if you’re one of those weekend warriors geared up to do battle on I-70 to hit your favorite ski resort, or just contemplating the necessity of a mid-winter trip on the frozen plains, you understand the necessity of prepping your vehicle to be ready for the worst that winter can (and probably will) throw at us. Dan Moyer, owner of Loveland’s Metric Motors, said the additional demands placed on our automobiles in freezing temperatures – not to mention the potential dangers of being stuck on the side of the road during a winterrelated highway closure – all suggest some preventative 46 NORTHERN COLORADO LIFE
Moyer said a good preventative check-up will test the battery and starter, making sure the system is not draining too much power, as cold weather puts an additional strain on your car’s electrical components. Engine coolant levels (and antifreeze strength) should also be checked, he adds. “Old coolant isn’t doing its job and is less efficient, so that should be inspected, as cold weather can cause leaks, seepage or cracked hoses.” When it comes to tires, Moyer recommends a set of efficient all-seasons for every driver, even those who don’t plan on heading up to the hills. Those who do will also need to be mindful of the Colorado State Patrol’s newer rules requiring real winter tires, chains or other traction devices on the mountain passes – otherwise you can be fined if your vehicle impairs traffic flow, or even if you end up in an accident. “The general rule for winter tires is that you should have them any time between November and April, as a NORTHERNCOLORADOLIFE.COM
big snow storm can hit at any time, even down here,” he said. “But your average driver on the Front Range just needs a good all-season tire with enough tread depth to offer traction. You also need to make sure your tires are not too old, as rubber gets harder as it ages and the traction is not so good anymore.” Speaking of traction, Moyer cautions everyone with an all-wheel-drive SUV or car that such technology isn’t necessarily a foolproof solution to winter travel woes. “People tend to think that their all-wheel-drive car will start and stop as well as a real four-wheel drive, but that’s not the case. All-wheel drive is a part-time system and only becomes active when traction is required. You need to know your car’s limits – and tires are still a big part of that.” For those who actively anticipate being on snowy mountain roads throughout the winter, there’s a much wider range of options for dedicated winter tires – and many more brands to choose from. Companies such as Goodyear have also created some hybrid products such as the WinterCommand Ultra tire, which provides excellent trac-
tion on snow, ice or in wet conditions, but is also manufactured to be a bit softer than traditional winter tires, allowing it a longer life and better ride comfort. Bridgestone’s Blizzak winter tires still remain a popular favorite, and other highly rated choices include Pirelli’s P Zero Winter tires, Michelin’s X-Ice Snow, Continental’s VikingContacts or the slightly exotic Nokian Hakkapeliittas, from the Finnish company that created winter tires in the first place. The Colorado chapter of the American Automobile Association also suggests drivers pre-equip their cars with winter necessities including a blanket and an extra set of clothes, a jug of winter-rated windshield washer fluid and non-clumping kitty litter – which can also be used to provide necessary emergency traction if you’re stuck spinning your wheels in a tricky, icy spot. Those supplement regular year-round emergency items including jumper cables, a flashlight, a first aid kit and drinking water. The AAA also sells pre-equipped winter emergency car care kits that include additional necessities such as a folding shovel, ice scraper and emergency candles.

December 4, 9 -11 a.m. Union Colony Civic Center, 701 10th Ave., Greeley Kids and parents won’t want to miss the 24th annual Teddy Bear Bash! Children (recommended ages 3 – 9) can meet Christopher the Christmas Bear—parents don’t forget to bring your camera! Fun family friendly activities include: refreshments, holiday tattoos, games, beautifully decorated trees, the North Pole Fishin’ hole, and a craft to take home. GARDENS OF LIGHTS
December 10-26 5 - 9 p.m. Gardens on Spring Creek, 2145 Centre Ave., Fort Collins
Stroll through a winter wonderland under hundreds of thousands of LED lights at the Gardens on Spring Creek. Flower, grapevines, butterflies, a holiday village, and other favorite garden creatures are constructed entirely from holiday lights. December 10, 5-9 p.m.; Downtown Loveland Night on the Town is Downtown Loveland’s “night out.” There’s plenty of fine and casual dining, craft beer tasting rooms and retail shops to enjoy —it’s an opportunity to spend an evening with friends in our downtown. Night on the Town activities change season to season, so there might be pop-up sales, sidewalk art or pedicabs in summer, or horse carriage rides, hot chocolate or the annual Festival of Lights in winter.
