Survey: Pandemic has shifted how Americans view travel BRANDPOINT

T

he COVID-19 pandemic has had an undeniable, unavoidable impact on the world – from the way you conduct business, to how you shop for groceries. It may have even shifted your idea of what is important in life.

According to Hankook Tire’s latest Gauge Index, Americans say spending time with family is a top priority. In light of everything 2020 has brought so far, Americans are shifting gears with a renewed emphasis on things they may have previously taken for granted: from time spent with loved ones, to road trips to favorite vacation destinations, and even, surprisingly, the daily commute.

THE RISE OF THE ROAD TRIP For many, the COVID-19 pandemic has thrown a wrench in vacation plans. But Hankook found that nearly two-thirds (62%) of Americans are still hopeful and excited about the idea of an upcoming vacation. And more than likely, that vacation will be a road trip.

As consumers remain skeptical of traveling by plane and other forms of public transit, they are finding a safe hygiene haven in their own vehicles. According to the survey, 60% of Americans expect to take more road trips as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Many expect a rise in road trip plans enabling travelers to explore while still safely adhering to social distancing guidelines.

So, who are they going with? Even as restrictions lift, Americans remain uncertain about traveling with people outside their households. At the same time, they don’t necessarily want to travel with everyone in their household.

When asked who Americans would most like to travel with after the pandemic restrictions ease, the top choice was their significant other or spouse (40%), indicating a desire to spend some quality time together. Traveling with a 4

spouse or significant other was more than twice as popular as the next most popular choice: traveling with your children (18%).

REDEFINING THE DAILY DRIVE Americans’ preference for wheels over wings doesn’t stop when it comes to planning their next vacation. It will also have a significant impact on the daily commute. Americans widely agree automotive travel will be the top form of transportation after the COVID-19 pandemic eventually subsides (62%). Only a small percentage of people expect to regularly use other forms of transportation – including public transit (9%), ride sharing (7%) and trains (6%) – with the same regularity.

Of course, nobody knows what that regular rush hour might look like, as offices across

the country look for ways to safely stagger workforces and encourage working from home to allow for proper social distancing. Many will continue to avoid commutes altogether as companies encourage employees to keep working from home. When the time is right to resume your daily commute to work or school, make sure your vehicle is ready for the job as well by checking your tire pressure, any flat spots developed from prolonged parking and that A/C and heating systems are ready.

Overall, it’s clear that one of the many perspectives the COVID-19 pandemic has reshaped is Americans’ attitudes toward driving.

What may have once been a daily drag might now be a necessary change in routine, and a welcome opportunity to spend time with the people that matter most.

less smooth. As the initial cold spells arrive, you should have the pressure tested as it will generally be low. White also advises rechecking those pressure readings every month and rotating the tires every 5000 to 6000 miles to maximize tire life.

“Tires should be kept at the pressure shown on the tire sticker in the door jam,” says White. “Regular rotations also give you the opportunity to inspect the tires for wear patterns caused by other vehicle issues such as alignment or suspension problems.”

White recommends an easy test to ensure your tire’s tread depth is safe: “Place a penny upside down into the most shallow tread groove on your tire,” he says. “If Lincoln’s complete head is still visible, you need to replace your tires.”

rom low tire pressure to road salt damage, winter in Colorado can take its toll on your vehicle. Here are some care tips from the experts at Phil’s Pro Auto in Greeley to prevent long-term damage and keep your car running smoothly in the winter months.

KEEP YOUR WINDSHIELD CLEAR One of the most common car concerns for winter is having enough washer fluid and quality wipers to provide a clear view of the road. Ensure that you always have access to washer fluid by draining and refilling your reservoir with a proper winter mixture that will not freeze. “Warm weather states will not use a fluid that will resist freezing, so if you have 6

recently moved here from a southern state you should make sure to have your fluid tested,” says Philip White, owner of Phil’s Pro Auto Service.

PREP YOUR TIRES FOR MUD AND SNOW If your tires are worn out or not appropriate for snowy conditions, it can be a major safety risk in the winter months and might even get you into trouble. “A mud and snow designation may be required at certain times on mountain roads during the winter to avoid a ticket,” says White. “But for local winter driving conditions you want to make sure your tires are ‘all season’ rated at a minimum.” Even if you have a 4-wheel or all-wheel drive vehicle, you still need the right type of tires.

MAINTAIN PROPER TIRE PRESSURE Cold weather can lower the pressure of your tires, which makes them less safe and your ride

WASH OFF THE SALT The salt which is used to de-ice roads in our snowy region can cause rust damage on the undercarriage of your car. The only way to avoid this is by washing your vehicle after every snow storm. “Most car wash locations have equipment to facilitate getting the underside of a vehicle washed off,” says White.

PROTECT YOUR BATTERY While all of the above tips might seem obvious to the seasoned winter driver, White says his number one winter care tip actually relates to car batteries. “Inspect the condition of the battery, charging system and battery cables,” he says. “While heat is the ultimate assassin of your vehicles’ battery, the winter cold weather puts higher loads on your electrical system so it needs to be in top shape. As part of your regular maintenance schedule you should ask to have your battery and changing system tested.

Then on your own you should be checking the condition of your battery cables.”

These systems need to be monitored for corrosion and drivers also need to ensure the cables are tight. “This will help assure that your vehicle will start and operate correctly all winter long,” says White. “If the corrosion appears severe, have your service provider professionally service them. Today’s modern vehicle will sometimes react quite badly to a battery disconnect and your professional technician will know what is required to keep those problems from occurring.”

Best ways to keep your car clean this winter KATHLEEN DUFF Drive

W

inter’s cold, snowy weather can bring all kinds of obstacles for drivers, but it also brings challenges for their vehicles.

Wade Keith, brand manager of Breeze Thru Car Wash, with 11 locations in Northern Colorado and Wyoming, said vehicles need as much care in the cold as they do in the summer months.

“A lot of people think that car washes are closed in the winter but it’s actually our busy season,” Keith said. “In the wintertime, you get a snowstorm, you want to get that washed off as soon as you can.” He estimates that vehicle owners may want to wash their rides three or 8

four times a month during snowy months.

He offers the following tips for keeping vehicle clean this time of year: •

Rubber floor mats are key, especially after a snowfall. “Once that snow and ice and dirt grind down into the floorboard and carpet, it can be really difficult to get out,” Keith said.

Wash the undercarriage of the vehicle. Keith said some drivers may regularly wash their exteriors without understanding that cleaning the undercarriage is essential to preventing rust and corrosion. The use of magnesium chloride and other snowremoval products on roads can prove damaging over time if not removed.

Keep a layer of wax on the exterior.

Snow and ice will melt off or slide off an auto that has been waxed. The quicker the moisture is removed from a vehicle, the better. Waxing prior to big snowstorms is recommended.

Make sure windshield-wiper fluid reservoirs are kept full, and flip windshield wipers in an upright position prior to storms to prevent them from sticking to windows in frigid weather.

Do not try to run the windshield wipers to remove ice – use a scraper.

Protect the clear coat – the transparent paint applied on top of the color coat on a vehicle. Regular washing and waxing keeps the clear coat intact; in turn, the clear coat keeps the paint color looking vibrant. “Anything that adheres to your clear coat, you want to get that off immediately. It can be fragile,” Keith said.

Maintain the interior. Keith suggests looking online for car hacks, such as using cupcake liners or coffee filters in cup-holders to prevent dirt or spills from accumulating. Breeze Thru also offers express interior services to maintain clean vehicles.

BE PREPARED WITH A WINTER DRIVING KIT If a winter storm is predicted in your area, prepare your trunk, says Melissa McDonald, a Greeley insurance agent with State Farm.

Here’s a list of items she recommends having in your winter driving kit:

A portable shovel is also good to have on hand come in the event you need to dig your car out of a bank of snow. Many kits come with collapsible shovels, but if you’ve ever had to dig your car out after a heavy snowstorm, you know that a full-size shovel is more equipped to handle the job.

GET SNOW TIRES Not only are snow tires convenient to help your car handle winter weather conditions, they’re also required by law if you’re driving in the high country. To be considered safe for winter driving, your tire tread should be at least 3/16”, CDOT says.

A law signed by Colorado Gov. Jared Polis puts mandatory traction laws in effect on a 127-mile stretch of I-70 from September through May. CDOT can activate the traction laws to other highways as necessary through snowy winter months. If you’re in a passenger vehicle, you need to have one of the following: designated mud and snow tires, tire chains, a tire chain alternative such as an AutoSock, a 4-wheel drive vehicle with adequate tire tread, or an all-wheel drive vehicle with adequate tire tread.

A pro tip from Scott Bicknell, president and CEO of Bicknell Insurance: Stop by your local tire shop to have them inspect your tires before you hit the winter road.

Bicknell also suggests going to an empty parking lot and learning how your car slides and how to handle it in a controlled environment before you’re tested in an emergency situation. If you’ve got teenagers

who are new to driving in the snow, this is a great exercise, says Bicknell.

TIPS FOR DRIVING IN THE SNOW Whether you’re a Colorado native who has ample experience driving in winter conditions or you’re new to the state, it can help to brush up on some winter driving tips.

First things first, plan extra time to clear your car of snow and ice before leaving for your destination.

When approaching a hill, wait until the vehicle in front of you has reached the top before you start up. Drive steadily up the hill but avoid going too fast; that could cause you to swerve, according to State Farm’s driver safety tips.

The three actions that you do most when you drive are accelerate, turn and brake. “In winter weather, you should only do one of those actions at a time,” according to CDOT. “Attempting more than one of these actions at once can cause slide-outs, spin-outs and other harmful scenarios.”

Also, when traveling downhill, switch to a lower gear if possible and gently tap your brakes. This can help avoid burning your brakes and help your vehicle maintain its

When you’re driving at night, keep headlight beams low as high beams can amplify the appearance of snow and lead to decreased visibility.

Other tips include slowing down, staying in your car if you encounter a multi-car collision and always wearing your seatbelt.

“Lastly, stay off your phones,” Bicknell says.

“You can’t drive and text in normal driving conditions, so don’t do it when the conditions are even more difficult.”

ith the average cost of a light vehicle hovering around $38,000 this year, financing a car is often the most sensible solution for buyers on a budget. Most people don’t have that much cash on hand to purchase a car, truck or SUV off the lot, so heading to the bank for a loan is the next best option.

The tried-and-true triad of auto financing factors include total purchase price, interest rate and terms. The total purchase price of a car also includes any options you add to a new vehicle, taxes, warranty coverage and other fees.

The available interest rate or ARP is the percentage fee you pay over time for the privilege of accessing money upfront. Terms represent the length or “life” of the car loan, November 2020

which most financial advisors recommend limiting to five years.

It’s basic math: the longer you take to pay, the less your monthly payment, but the faster you pay off your car loan, the less interest you pay overall.

Start by following the most sensible car-buying path: •

Check your credit or build it up first

•

Determine the price range for the type of vehicle you wish to buy

•

Research the differences between an auto versus personal loan

•

Get pre-qualified

•

Find a third-party to appraise your trade-in, if you have one

•

Talk to your insurance company about premiums on different cars

But that’s just the start; it’s important to keep a number of things in mind when you opt to finance your new or used vehicle.

To learn more, we caught up with Jolene Yates, marketing director at Weld Community Credit Union.

Yates shared advice as both a bank representative and an advocate.

“This is what I would tell a friend if they asked,” she says.

Get pre-approved Get pre-approved at a credit union with payments that will work in your budget. That way when you go to buy the car, you know what you can afford.

Research the best rate Check with a few financial institutions to get the best interest rate. I recommend checking with a community bank and a local credit union like ours.

Find a reputable dealer Always shop for your car with reputable dealers. You can start your research online and read reviews, ask trusted friends and family and narrow your choices from there.

Toyota Hybrid moves the needle RAV4 on electrified performance

I

f your mental image of the Toyota RAV4 is that of the revolutionary SUV’s earlier days, think again. For 2021, Toyota’s bestselling vehicle is not only much larger, it is also available as a standard hybrid model or the unique RAV4 Prime, a performance-oriented model with 302 combined horsepower and an extended all-electric range.

According to Jessica Zumbrun, general sales manager for Ehrlich Toyota in Greeley, the RAV4 is the world’s best-selling SUV, selling November 2020

more than 10 million units as of July 2020.

Zumbrun says the 2021 RAV4 is a great fit for Northern Colorado, offering all-wheel drive (AWD) and two versions of an available hybrid powertrain that delivers up to 41 mpg.

The RAV4 is rugged, comfortable and offers a variety of models to fit the lifestyle and budget of Coloradans.

I recently had the chance to drive the RAV4 Prime on a mountain journey out to Vail and back and the combination of a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine and two electric motors means the not-so-little Prime absolutely flies – Toyota says its 0 to 60 speed in 5.7 seconds makes it the fastest four-door vehicle in their

entire lineup.

Efficient? Yes, wildly so: I got 425 miles on a single tank of gas by keeping the RAV4 Prime charged at home or during stops, with a larger battery system here that allows up to 42 miles of entirely electric range. Even better, its Electronic On-Demand AWD system makes it extremely suited for winter use or uphill journeys.

Add cool features such as a 3-D view camera, an available nine-inch multimedia touchscreen display and even a head-up display, and it’s a highly-evolved and exciting SUV alternative.

If you’re looking for a new SUV, add the RAV4 to your list of considerations.

2022 GMC Hummer EV

T

he past few years have seen a lot of big talk about moving fully-electric car technology from small, often impractical cars to the profitable and more popular world of pickup trucks. And while companies including Tesla and Rivian have great plans in mind, General Motors seems to have already crossed the finish line with its upcoming 2022 Hummer EV, one of the most audacious product debuts in automotive history.

Yes, that polarizing full-size vehicle brand of the 1990s and 2000s is indeed coming back in

Fall 2021 as a GMC product, starting with its $112,595 variant – the Edition 1, an ultrafuturistic, entirely battery-powered electric supertruck promising 1,000 horsepower and an estimated range of more than 350 miles.

With a largely removable roof and oneof-a-kind technology including four-wheel steering, underbody armor, 35-inch off-road tires and an adaptive air suspension allowing the Hummer EV to lift six inches for off-road work, it is indeed a lot of automobile.

Edition 1 sets in motion plans for three slightly more down-to-earth EV models debuting between Fall 2022 and Spring 2024, with 800- and 625-horsepower vehicles priced between $100,000 and $80,000. The reservations list is already very busy.

General Motors is indeed making a huge

leap from anything currently offered in its entire global lineup (which, at present, includes only the Chevy Bolt, which offers about 259 miles of range), but boasts that its in-house developed batteries and Ultium drive electric power units will be able to get almost 100 miles of range in a 10-minute session on a high-speed DC fast charger.

The Hummer EV will use a three-motor system to provide absolutely explosive power for its large but not impossibly-sized pickup truck variant (think a slightly wider version of a Silverado, not the ultra-massive military H1 model of the past). Its torque numbers are absolutely off the charts and the vehicle is said to be able to hit 60 mph in three seconds, so hang on.

Production is set to begin next year in a vastly retrofitted plant in Detroit, where a wide range of Cadillac and other all-electric GM products are planned for the near future.

2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer RS AWD STU WRIGHT Drive

A

dozen years ago, a Chevrolet Trailblazer was a midsize SUV with body-on-frame structure and V-8 engine availability.

But for 2021 Chevrolet has opted to offer a smaller (18” shorter) subcompact SUV by the same name that burns less fuel and is actually less expensive. It also is dramatically better looking with a family resemblance to the bigger Chevy Blazer brought out in 2019.

The new Trailblazer starts at $19,000, plus freight, but I was fortunate enough to get a test model that carried a window sticker of $32,350. It was the a Scarlet red RS with a

black roof, and options included a large dualpane moon roof, power liftgate, wireless phone charger, 8” infotainment screen, Bose stereo, lane change alert, blind spot monitor and adaptive (radar) cruise control.

Power for the Trailblazer RS is supplied by a three-cylinder turbocharged engine with a nine speed automatic transmission and an all wheel drive arrangement. Horsepower output is 155 @ 5,600 rpm and torque saves the day for performance at 174 lb.-ft. @ 1,600 rpm.

Stop-start technology is incorporated in this vehicle, but an override switch is on hand, thankfully. Other operational switches are for snow, performance and AWD/FWD selection.

Fuel economy for the RS is rated at 30 mpg highway/26 mpg combined/26 mpg city, and my observation was 31.8 mpg, allowing for 420 miles of range with its 13.2 gallon tank.

The 173.5” long Chevy has cargo capacity of 54.4 cubic ft. (25.3 with back seats erect) and the interior is attractive with red trim work and stitching. Ride is suitable and handling around town is particularly nice with good visibility for the driver. The vehicle rolls on 18” five-spoke aluminum wheels fitted with 225/55R - 18 Hankook Kinergy GT radials.

I found favor with the RS in the areas of styling, convenience, and utility, and believe it stands out in the subcompact SUV segment.

2021 Subaru Forester Touring AWD

T

he Forester, Subaru's venerable compact SUV, was introduced as a production crossover in the U.S. in 1998. Now in its fifth generation, a Forester was the subject of my most recent review, it being a 2021 Touring model. It was painted Magnetite Gray metallic November 2020

with black leather upholstered seating for five.

The all-wheel drive Touring Forester comes with a substantial number of features such as a panoramic moon roof and 18", five-spoke alloy wheels fitted with Falken all-season radials.

Base M.S.R.P. was $34,895.00 and the total with all options and freight was $36,888.

The Eyesight system of safety features that is included on the Touring is driver assist technology that acts as an extra set of eyes on the road and an extra foot on the brake.

Because of EyeSight, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration awards Subaru its five-star rating for frontal and side crash prevention. The system includes adaptive cruise control for maintaining a safe distance behind vehicles in front, lane departure/sway warning, and pre-collision braking/throttle management.

EyeSight utilizes dual stereo color cameras mounted inside the car so that dirt and

front-end damage cannot inhibit the system’s performance.

Power in the Forester was a 2.5 liter "boxer", horizontally-opposed four cylinder engine with 182 horsepower at 5,800 rpm. Torque was 176 lb. ft. at 4,400 rpm. Smoothness, a hallmark of Subaru boxers, was evident during my test and the transmission did its job without fuss or fanfare. The Lineartronic continuously variable transmission results in increased fuel economy, and the ratings for my Subaru were 26 mpg in town, 33 mpg on the highway and 29 mpg combined.

Weight of the Forester equipped as such is 3,589 lbs., wheelbase is 105.1”, overall length is 182.1”, and ground clearance is a nice 8.7". It's a do-everything vehicle with good gas mileage, excellent resale, good looks and satisfying performance.
