There was a time ohso-long-ago – when we use to be able to hug people and see their faces – when I hated

BY MARY going grocery LYNN BRUNY shopping with a passion. But now these occasional forays to the great lands outside the four walls of our protective barrier are one of the highlights of my routine. You see people – yes, scads of actual people – up close! Well, not that close, of course: six feet or more apart. And you don’t actually see them. You may see their eyes and hair, but basically you see their forms. But still, the energy of an actual group of human beings (trying hard to avoid each other) is palpable!

Going through the grocery store use to be boring and predicable. Things would just be on the shelves all the time ready for purchase. Remember that?

But now I wonder: Will they have our laundry detergent? Will the soup shelf be stocked? Or, for me, the Holy Grail of all purchases: Could there possible be my favorite ginger snap cookies (Simple BitesTM) that I have not seen since the pandemic began?

Be still my beating heart! But alas, no, not recently. Maybe next time.

I find the produce section especially exciting. It’s definitely the most complex part of the store as there is no straightforward way of proceeding through it. People are like fish darting in and out grabbing things while avoiding other shoppers. It’s like we’re all the same poles of magnets repelling each other – but very thoughtfully repelling each other.

This is one thing I like about the pandemic: Most people go out of their way to be considerate and kind. It’s like we’re all thinking, “Life is hard enough. Let’s just try and be a bit more decent to each

other.”

But on the flip side there is occasionally that one unhappy human itching for a confrontation, a sad side effect of this pandemic. This unhappy human will instigate a nasty spat with another shopper for some perceived insult or infraction.

You know said unhappy human just wants to get into a fuss so they can yell and get their grumpy yahoos out and spread their bad mojo.

Sometimes you’ll be in the vicinity of such a kerfuffle in progress. As a person who hates nasty conflict, I divert my eyeballs from the action and scurry away like a cockroach before a WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment) smack down-like fight occurs.

Thus far nothing of the sort has happened in my local grocery stores. But this possibility keeps me on my toes: It raises my adrenaline and keeps my fightor-flight response on high alert.

Who knows what craziness might happen today by the canned-bean end cap display?

I really look forward to now is checkout. Remember preCOVID times when you would mindlessly have a conversation with the checkout clerk while thinking ahead to the rest of your day? Now I find I am engrossed, downright riveted, by anything the safely plexiglassed clerk is talking about: his flaring eczema (poor guy), the mpg of cars he’s considering buying, his cat’s diabetes. Whatever the topic, I’m in! To actually see and hear another human being – a stranger no less – talking so near me!

Thrilling!

After all this excitement I return with my bounty to the fours walls of my quarantine homestead basking in the delight of the outing. What a glorious day! Can’t wait until I go shopping again. Maybe the Gods of Groceries will smile down on me and stock my ginger snaps. A woman can only hope.

Pre-Offer Inspections

When purchasing a home an inspection is typically part of the process.

If you are concerned you may lose your dream home by adding an inspection contingency but still want to make sure you are protected, consider a pre-offer inspection.

Buying a home is harder than usual these days, expect the unexpected. That includes a half dozen offers for the house you want. Now, buyers often must win a house. Pre-offer inspections are one way to boost your odds

of winning. More common in competitive real estate markets, this preliminary, informationonly inspection evaluates a home’s major systems and any potential issues, giving buyers the information to make a decision on whether to place an offer. Preoffer inspections take much less time than conventional inspections and are valuable option in timesensitive situations—especially valuable in “as is” sales.

A seller who lists a home “as-is” intends to complete the sale without making repairs or improvements or reducing the price. Although inspection contingencies would give you an out if the inspection results were unacceptable, a pre-offer inspection saves you the hassle of negotiating on a home you’ll wind up not purchasing because it’s in poor repair. The stronger your offer, the better you compete against other buyers. A preoffer inspection gives you the information you need before you make the offer, so you won’t take the next step unless the home is worth buying as is.

Prequalifying for financing

is common practice these days.

Try using the same strategy for home inspections. You want the protection of an inspection.

Buying without one is foolish, unless you happen to own a remodeling company. So, get the home inspected, then make an offer that waives the right to inspection. That offer will stand out from the others. Other offers will be contingent on inspections—yours won’t. A few hundred dollars for a pre-offer inspection is a small price to pay to stand head-and-shoulders above other bids for the home you have always wanted.

In today’s competitive market smart agents are looking for every edge they can get for their clients.

However, it’s still unusual for agents to coach buyers to inspect before bidding, even though that increases their chances of having the winning bid. Too often, the only focus is price. It might be easier to persuade buyers to spend $400 on a pre-offer inspection than it would be to make the call saying they lost the bid for the home they loved.

There are multiple

circumstances in every transaction that could impact your decision on having a pre-offer inspection done.

Here are some of the advantages and disadvantages of having a home inspection before making an offer.

Advantages: • You may discover issues that will cause you not to move forward with the purchase.

• If you do make an offer, it does not have to contain an inspection contingency.

• You will have more information before making an offer.

Disadvantages: • With no contract, there is a chance the seller may sell to another buyer.

• You still may not be able to come to terms with the seller.

10 WAYS TO WINTERIZE YOUR HOME NOW The perfect time to prep your home for winter is when fall weather is at its finest. Cooler temperatures and mountain

BY TOM snow will be KALINSKI here any day, RE/MAX of Boulder so don’t wait to prepare. Here are steps to take to get ready for falling leaves and freezing temperatures, as recommended by House Beautiful and by Better Homes and Gardens.

1. Prepare gutters Clean and well-functioning gutters are a must for winter.

Now is the time to clear gutters of leaves and debris and replace damaged sections.

2. Block drafts Windows are a major source of heat loss in the home. One simple solution is to eliminate drafts with weather stripping. To check for drafts, close the door or window on a strip of paper, and then slide the paper. If it slides easily, it’s time to replace your weather stripping.

3. Disconnect outdoor faucets and sprinklers This is a simple step to take sooner rather than later. A few easy steps will help avoid frozen and bursting pipes in your home.

Drain and disconnect your hoses from outdoor faucets before the first freeze. For sprinkler systems, it’s best to find a professional.

4. Protect outdoor furniture Outdoor furniture lasts longer and looks better if it is protected from winter snow and freezing temperatures. Either store the furniture inside for the winter or cover it with a waterproof furniture cover.

5. Fix driveway and sidewalk cracks When water freezes in small cracks, the small cracks become big cracks. It’s easy to prevent by

filling those small cracks with concrete crack sealer. Your drive and walkways will look much better over the years – and will be safer – if you take this preventive step.

6. Prep your lawn Prevent the stress and damage that cold temperatures can cause.

When days grow are shorter, turf grass shifts food reserves from leaves to roots. Your grass is preparing for winter, and it needs fertilizer. Fertilizing grass in the fall feeds the roots and paves the way for a healthy green lawn when spring comes.

7. Check your snow blower Don’t wait: get your snow blower out of the garage now.

Check the oil, tires, and shear pins and crank it up now, before the snow flies. That way, you’ll be ready for that first snowy morning.

8. Maintain your furnace Before a chill sets in, make sure your furnace or heating system is cleaned and inspected so it’s running efficiently.

We frequently catch glimpses of bears, mountain lions, coyotes, deer, elk, foxes, racoons, skunks, owls, eagles, hawks, woodpeckers, bats, and even moose. Yet as these animals lose their fear of humans and venture into the city, there is danger to both humans and animals. In addition, without responsible safeguards, animals can also cause damage to your home and property. Just a few simple rules make it easier to coexist, and to protect them.

For example, this is the time of year when bears are out feeding as much as they can to get ready for their winter hibernation. Just last week, bears were spotted roaming as far as 75th Street east of Boulder. It could be because Wednesday morning is trash day in most of those neighborhoods.

Bear-proof trash containers are not required that far to the east, but it makes sense to secure your trash as best as possible, or maybe

• Make sure your car is clean and locked. Don’t leave food in it.

You’ve seen bears in car videos, right? wait until the morning of trash pickup before putting it out.

With temperatures cooling and the beauty of fall leaves changing color, our local trails are at peak capacity. It important not to litter and to keep your pets under control while hiking or walking.

As the snowpack increases, a dog chasing an animal can put undue stress on wildlife.

The holiday season will be here soon, too, and extra trash and decorations can present unique issues with wildlife. If you have ever seen an elk or deer trying to shake a string of holiday lights off its antlers, you realize how important it is to think about where you place and discard your decorations. Be sure to have your lights and décor situated high and out of the way of known wildlife corridors.

It is also never a good idea to leave food out for wildlife. People will often lay food out to draw animals closer so they can view them. However, leaving food for them takes the wild out of wildlife, and it actually hurts them by making them more dependent on human food, which can lead to health issues and disease, expose them to dangerous places away from their natural habitats,

disrupt the ecosystem, and cause them to become aggressive. An example of these unintended consequences is setting out a salt lick to attract deer for viewing opportunities. It may seem harmless, but if you invite deer, you could also attract mountain lions that love to prey upon the deer.

Here are a few additional tips to keep a safe distance and maintain a respectful relationship with our wildlife by making your home wildlife proof: • Secure all trash in wildlife proof containers. Don’t leave the trash out overnight.

• Trim trees and maintain your yard. Squirrels can jump from trees onto your roof.

Overgrown vegetation and wood piles can attract them.

• Plant native flowers, shrubs and trees, and control weeds.

• Use fencing to keep deer, racoons, and rabbits out of your garden.

• Don’t put food or salt licks out for wildlife.

• Secure your outdoor hot tub with a strong cover. Bears love a good soak when they wake up this spring!

Are you washing your sheets enough during the pandemic?

Here’s what experts advise

By Dawson White McClatchy Washington Bureau The coronavirus pandemic has many of us thinking more about how often and thoroughly we should clean our homes and belongings.

But what about our sheets and other bedding?

Germs can spread easily when pillowcases and sheets are shared by more than one person, the United Kingdom’s National Health Service warns.

Thankfully there are steps you can take to protect yourself and your loved ones.

Here’s what experts have to say about washing bedding during the coronavirus pandemic.

How Often To Wash Bedding Fabric that is closer to the skin _ including towels and bedding _ should be washed most frequently, dermatologist Joshua Zeichner told

the Huffington Post.

Before the pandemic, he recommended washing pillowcases and sheets once a week and duvets every other week since they don’t come in contact with the skin as frequently.

His guidelines have changed since the onset of coronavirus.

Now Zeichner recommends cutting typical wash periods in half, HuffPo reported, meaning that sheets should be washed at least twice a week.

However, dermatologist Hadley King says the best thing you can do for your family is focus on cleaning yourself when you get home.

“I think this makes more sense than focusing only on bed linens,” Hadley told HuffPo. “This may mean more showers, more hair washing and more changing clothes and washing ‘outside clothes’ more often, but it will help keep you, your home and your bed clean.”

How To Wash Bedding When it comes to laundering your bedding during the pandemic, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says to wash items as directed by the manufacturer, with a few additional precautions.

The federal agency also warns against shaking dirty laundry for fear it could spread the virus.

You should also take care not to “hug” dirty laundry close to your body, per the New York City Department of Health’s guidelines for businesses.

When washing, be sure to use the warmest water setting appropriate for the fabric and dry your bedding completely, according to the CDC. Be sure to disinfecting clothes hampers when you’ve put your last load in the wash.

No washing machine?

Your best bet is to stock up on extra sheets and pillowcases to help you keep your bedding fresh

and clean, Wirecutter reported.

Washing The Bedding Of An Ill Person If someone in your home has tested positive for coronavirus or suffered its symptoms, you should take extra caution when washing their bedding, but there’s no need to wash it separately, according to the CDC. Good Housekeeping recommends wearing gloves when handling the bedding of someone who’s been sick and washing with bleach, if appropriate, in water that’s at least 140 degrees.

When your laundry is finished, don’t leave it sitting in the machine _ the damp environment will make it easier for any leftover germs to multiply, Good Housekeeping reported.

When you’re done, be sure to thoroughly wash your hands, according to the outlet.

Trick-or-treating candy chutes could help save Halloween from our freak show of a year. Here’s how we made ours.

By Liam Ford, Chicago Tribune (TNS) If one thing deserves to go on during this freak show of a year, it’s Halloween.

America’s civic, cultural and political life live in the spirit of the holiday.

Halloween was born from remnants of a pagan feast that also is bound up with the celebration of one of the highest holy days in the Christian calendar, All Saints Day. But All Hallows’ Eve has never been made an official holiday. Its traditions aren’t organized. It started out in the United States as a night for bonfires, tale telling and costume parties. It became a night for sometimes dangerous mischief. And after World War I, it turned into a night for children to beg door-to-door.

Since March, I’ve been thinking about Halloween and what the coronavirus pandemic might do to it. Haunted houses, the resorts of older teens enamored of frights but not willing to dress up in silly costumes, are out. Parties are out. Kids shouldn’t gather with their friends to form door-to-door mobs.

And the isolation and the real-world horrors imposed by COVID-19 have had me flashing back to 1982. That year, the Chicago-area Tylenol murders, with bottles of painkillers tainted with cyanide, canceled trick-ortreating.

Can kids trick-or-treat safely this year, I wondered? Then the Centers for Disease Control advised parents to “avoid traditional trick-or-treating.”

Instead, the CDC advised people to leave small bags of treats outside your door. (How long would those last?)

But Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot and city Health Commissioner Dr. Allison Arwady gave us some hope when they said they weren’t canceling Halloween.

on Facebook. A chute, made of a PVC pipe, designed to deliver Snickers or Twix or Laffy Taffy to the hungry hordes, while keeping the young ghouls away from those handing out the treats.

And I decided to build it.

Orange would be best.

And orange PVC pipe is used for sprinkler systems. But it commonly comes as a 1-inchwide pipe, too small for even the funnest-sized candies.

So, like a lot of people on YouTube and Facebook, I priced 10-foot-long, plain white, 3-inch PVC. They’re the most common and easily available tubes, and

last weekend I was on the verge of spending about $15 at a local hardware store. I needed about an 8-foot piece to attach to the front porch railing of our Rogers Park house, long enough to launch candy from the top step and have it be easily caught by kids on the front walk.

Luckily, I found enough scrap 2-inch PVC in the rafters of our garage.

I took it down, brought it to the front porch and it fit. (If you’re buying a piece and don’t have the equipment to safely cut it to size, most hardware stores will do it for you.) Cleaned off and

hosed through, then disinfected and hosed again, it was ready for use.

My wife got a few rolls of orange duct tape (we visit ClarkDevon Hardware regularly), and I ended up using just one full roll, for about $5, to wrap the tube.

To keep the candy from shooting right out onto the sidewalk, I bought a 2-inch, 45-degree angle elbow for the bottom of the pipe.

I was going to mount the tube to the top of the railing with metal straps, but the hardware store clerks told me zip ties (with a little more duct tape) would do the job just fine.

Mounting complete, decorations came next. My 11-year-old daughter broke out some markers. I wrapped the chute with orange holiday lights and draped the top three-quarters with a wispy black cloth.

To keep the tube clean until Halloween, I attached round pieces of cardboard covered in tape at both ends.

The chute does work.

(Violating house rules, we broke into the stash of Halloween candy to test it.) Not only do the candy pieces come zooming out of the chute, they make a suitably didgeridoo-like sound on the way down. A repurposed plastic jack-o-lantern, with a hole cut in its mouth so it looks as if the pumpkin is spewing candy, completes the rig.

Next, we’ll have to figure out how to mark off social distancing for the families we hope will give us a chance to use our newest, most 2020 of decorations.

So, friends and fellow candylovers, don’t let the pandemic smash our Halloween spirit. We need it now more than ever. We’re a nation built on ingenuity. And duct tape.
