indsor, Greeley and Weld County residents have options to recycle live Christmas trees into January through programs in place in Windsor and Greeley.

In Windsor, residents may recycle live trees Dec. 26 through Jan. 29 at Eastman Park South near the Treasure Island Demonstration Garden off of Laku Lake Road.

Trees must be free of decorations including wire, hooks, tinsel, tags, plastic and lights. Artificial trees are not accepted.

This program is available to Windsor residents.

The Eastman Park South drop-off location accommodates recycling and allows trees to be enjoyed one more time, at the Magical Forest community event from noon to 3

p.m. Saturday, Feb. 13 before being mulched.

This event is free, and is hosted by the town’s parks, recreation and culture department.

To adhere to state guidelines on gatherings, registration is required.

Registration is available online at recreationliveshere.com/RegReg or by phone at 970-674-3500.

Attendees are asked to sign up all members in their party that will be attending in advance for a safe and fun experience.

In Greeley and Weld County, residents may recycle live Christmas trees for free through Jan. 15 at the Greeley Organic Waste (GROW) Recycling Center.

The center is located at 1130 E. 8th St. in Greeley — 1 mile east of U.S. 85 on E. 8th Street. Christmas tree recycling is available from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday through Jan. 15. The GROW Center is closed New Year’s Day. At the GROW Recycling Center, the staff take the trees, grinds them up, and turns the trees into compost used to enrich the soil.

Residents need to remove all decorations, lights, wires, and similar materials.

Inclement weather might lead to closure of the GROW Center.

Overcoming The Post Holiday Blues

hat a year this has been.

Many of us were happy to see 2020 in our rear view

mirror.

For many people holidays can be stressful and coping with loneliness and isolation difficult. COVID-19 just added another layer of stress.

Many of us have known a person who has had COVID-19 or a loved one who has died from COVID-19 or another illness in 2020. Grief has covered many of us like an unwanted and heavy blanket as we experienced our first year without them.

Holidays always provoke good memories and bad ones. They mark traditions, events and rituals that remind us of good times and times that we would like to forget. This last year was the latter.

This year we all have realized and embraced changes that have rocked our world. In Colorado over 300,00 cases have been confirmed with over 4,500 deaths. As COVID-19 numbers rise and a new corona strain has been identified we are all looking for a quick fix and hope the numbers will go down.

With the cases possibly surging because of the holidays this is not likely.

Are vaccines our answer? With Pfizer and Moderna and others coming on board, however the vaccinations have possible side effects to consider.

treated unfairly or have suffered injustice because of their employment situation or other life situations.

Why are some people allowed to work remotely while others are not?

Why are some losing their jobs while some are not?

I know a person who was just diagnosed with COVID who has an underlying medical condition and had a bypass this last year. He is a stand up guy and has a heart of gold.

Another reason may be because your holiday was defined for you and you could not celebrate it in the way you were accustomed to. Yet another could be that your employment situation has changed and you are stressed financially.

W hatever the reason, this is something you can work through. Be your own psychotherapist:

• Identify your feeling and make a list of why you are feeling the way you do. Own your emotions and find a resolution • Transition back into your routine.

Accomplish small things and commit to a goal such as exercise or playing board games with your family weekly.

• Read a book, listen to your favorite music and bake cookies • Avoid additional stress, keep ex pectations reasonable and manageable.

• Stay connected reach out to family and friends.

• Stay hea lthy, physica l ly and mentally.

• Keep a gratitude journal. Live, Love and Enjoy the present.

These stressors are difficult to get through so feelings of low mood, depression, anxiety , grief and loss are not only normal but they are OK to feel. If you are feeling these feelings for a longer period than two weeks and they do not go away and you are feeling significant distress or impairment in social, occupational or other important areas of functioning, seek professional help.

If you are feeling out of sorts and have been feeling blue since November, what are you feeling? Could you be experiencing post-holiday blues?

What are post holiday blues and how can we cope with them? Feeling down or blue after the holidays is more common than you think and often happens in the month of January.

It is bothersome and in general a feeling of uneasiness and discomfort but is not defined as clinical depression.

Windsor-Severance’s Clearview Library District launches business podcast, focused on local businesses

indsor-Severance’s Clearview Library District has launched a new podcast series, Clearview on Business, that showcases area businesses and entrepreneurs.

According to a news release, the podcast is hosted by business resource librarian Kelly Hall, who is joined by guest cohosts from area Chambers of Commerce and the Town of Windsor Economic

Development Department. The podcast features an interview with a local business owner every other week.

The 10-minute interviews introduce listeners to the variety of small businesses in Windsor, Severance, and west Greeley.

“We wanted to help tell the story of the amazing small businesses we have in our area,” Hall said in the news release.

“Not only are these inspirational stories for other entrepreneurs but also great information for our residents to know what’s available in our towns. Now more

than ever, it’s important to support our business community and shop locally.”

The initial podcast features Ginger Hazel and her Windsor business, Knowledge Bound.

Weld RE-4 School District secondary students resume hybrid schedule in January

Students in grades 6-12 began remote learning in mid-November

A

s Greeley-Evans School District 6 announced Monday its plan to return students to in-person learning in January, neighboring Weld RE-4 School District made a similar decision just days before.

Weld RE-4 secondary students, in grades 6-12, will return to a hybrid schedule on Jan. 5.

Students in B group will return to school in person on Jan. 5, while A group students will resume off-campus learning on Jan. 5 and have their first in-person day on Jan. 7.

The district’s Inspire4 Online school will follow its normal schedule, according to the information posted Dec. 11 on the Weld RE-4 School District website.

Weld RE-4 middle and high school students — 2,889 students and 258 staff in Windsor and Severance — began the switch to remote learning in mid-November.

When the district announced its intention to move the secondary students to remote learning, it added the expectation of returning to hybrid learning after winter break.

Added to the district’s Dec. 11 message were updated guidelines from the state health department for

middle and high school students upon their return to in-person learning. To align with the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment recommendations on safe practices: • Only middle and high school students within six feet of someone who tests positive or who is symptomatic at school will have to be quarantined for 14 days.

“Middle and high school students will be assigned seats or placed in small groups in their classes when possible so we can track exposure and make quarantine decisions related to the 6-feet guidelines,” according to the Weld RE-4 School District.

Baseball, softball academy to take over NorCo Volleyball Club’s Windsor building

national youth baseball and softball training program is planning to open a new location in Windsor late next year in the former home of NorCo Volleyball Club.

D-BAT Academy, which runs multiple

training facilities across the country and one in Colorado Springs, will open the location at 7395 Greendale Road in Windsor in September 2021, according to a statement from franchisee Ken Salazar.

D-Bat will outfit the 21,000-squarefoot space with pitching machines, pitching lanes and 21,000 square feet of indoor turf capable of accommodating

year-round practices.The remaining 9,000 square feet of the building will be leased out to a yet-to-be-named youth training center.

Covid vaccine jointly developed by Pfizer and BioNTech was found to be effective in preventing 90 percent of Covid-19 Coronavirus infections

RELIEF IS IN SIGHT FROM THE LINGERING, EXHAUSTING AND DEADLY COVID-19 PANDEMIC. Vaccines are coming. Multiple vaccines are in the scientific pipeline to release Americans from the grip of the rapidly spreading disease caused by the new coronavirus.

“We believe vaccine is the beginning of the end of the pandemic,” said Banner Health Chief Clinical Officer Dr. Marjorie Bessel in a Dec. 2 news conference.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as of late November large-scale clinical trials were in progress or planned for five COVID-19 vaccines in the U.S. from the following companies: • • • • •

AstraZeneca Janssen Moderna Novavax Pfizer

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment on its website says the state is currently preparing to vaccinate eligible Coloradans for the first phase, Phase 1A. Dr. Mark Wallace, chief clinical officer for Sunrise Community Health in Evans, said Colorado requested 46,800 doses of the Pfizer vaccine with an expected 95,600 doses to come later from Moderna. On Thursday afternoon, an advisory panel to the Food and Drug Administration recommended the agency give its approval for the Pfizer vaccine.

Pfizer and Moderna previously applied for Emergency Use Authorization with the FDA, according to CDPHE, meaning the process for developing vaccine has been streamlined with the current public health emergency.

The vaccines are administered in two shots given 30 days apart.

“They’ve been really studied the same way we do other vaccines,” Wallace said. “Large trials, we’re talking 40,000 people.These have been developed under normal processes as far as safety goes. Safe and effective.”

Public health officials warn, though, that until a vaccine is widely available, Coloradans should continue to wear a mask, avoid in-person interactions and practice social distancing.

“UCHealth experts emphasize that it is not the time to let your guard down,” UCHealth Senior Media Relations Specialist Kelly Tracer wrote in an email.

Bessel said in a Dec. 9 news conference that Banner Health expected to hear the news that came down Thursday — that the FDA was moving toward an Emergency Use

health | COVID VACCINE Authorization and vaccinations could then begin the week of Dec. 14.

Tracer, the UCHealth spokeswoman, said the health system could begin receiving vaccine at its locations in late December or in January.

The vaccine will be free or acquired for low cost. According to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, Medicare, Medicaid and private insurance are required to cover the cost of the COVID-19 vaccine. Uninsured state residents will have access to the vaccine for free, and a provider “may not turn you away because of an inability to pay or your medical coverage status.”

This is all great, but what does that mean for northern Colorado residents?

For one, it means a lot of people will have to be vaccinated. Wallace stressed the importance of mass immunization, saying at the minimum, “we need “6570% of the population,”to be vaccinated for us to get out from under COVID-19.

“If want to control this and get back to what we call our normal lives, it’s not going to happen without a lot of people taking this vaccine,” Wallace said. “It’s just not going to happen.”

health department beginning as soon as this month.The state notes the timeline is subject to change based on the supply chain. The phased prioritization could change based on data, science and availability.

Drug companies Moderna and Pfizer report the vaccines as being about 95% effective based on trials to this point. It’s a effective rate Wallace calls “remarkable.”

“Highly effective,” he said. “When you get into the 94, 95% for a vaccine, that is remarkable.”

Wallace added the efficacy is also proving to be high in older individuals, which is not always the case with vaccines. None of the trials included individuals under age 18, Wallace said.

“That’s a gap we have and everyone’s talking about it,”Wallace said.“We have to get busy, getting them enrolled (in the trials) and seeing how they fare.”

Individuals ages 65 and older are among those slated to receive the vaccine in phase 2, which is scheduled to be released in the spring, according to the current state health department timeline.

Because the supply of vaccine will be limited initially, and might be limited for several months according to CDPHE,

that’s the reasoning behind the phased approach.

“By vaccinating people who are most likely to get COVID-19 first, we can keep more Coloradans safe,” the state health department writes on its website.

The three-phase distribution plan looks like this.

There are two parts to Phase 1 — A and B Phase 1A: the highest-risk healthcare workers and individuals.

People who have direct contact • with COVID-19 patients for 15 minutes or more over a 24-hour period.

Long-term care facility staff and • residents Phase 1B: moderate risk healthcare workers and responders Healthcare workers with less direct • contact with COVID-19 patients.

Workers in home health hospice • and dental settings.

EMS, firefighters, police, • correctional workers, dispatchers, funeral ser vices, other first responders and COVID-19 response personnel.

Phase 2 Could be rolled out in the spring and

is planned for higher-risk individuals and essential workers • People 65 and over • People of any age with diabetes, obesity, chronic lung disease, significant disease, chronic kidney disease, cancer or are immunocompromised.

• People who interact directly with the public at work, such as grocery store workers and school staff.

• People who work in high-density settings such as farms and meat packing plants.

• Workers who serve people who live in high-density settings • Other healthcare workers not covered in Phase 1 and adults who received a placebo during COVID-19 clinical trial.

Phase 3 Could be implemented in summer 2021 and would be for anyone ages 18-64 years old without high-risk conditions.

A leader of the largest privatesector union in Colorado, including workers at the large JBS meatpacking plant in Greeley, expressed support for the CDC’s advisory committee on

immunization for COVID-19.

A statement from Kim Cordova, vice president of United Food and Commercial Workers International and president of UFCW 7 that represents 25,000 workers in Colorado and Wyoming, said the organization applauds the CDC for recognizing the “urgent need to protect essential workers, which includes our heroic healthcare, grocery and food processing members of Local 7.”

Cordova’s message also came with caution, asking healthcare leaders, decision makers and all Americans to understand that people from communities of color have “not historically had a positive experience with government-run medical services in the past.”

“Given how our members have been neglected and unprotected by public health officials and their employers during this pandemic, Local 7 wants to make sure any vaccine decision made on behalf of essential workers is fully vetted, guided by both science and bioethics, and was not fumbled by the outgoing and incompetent Trump Administration,” Cordova said.

Wallace said he understands anyone who might be skeptical about the vaccines, given the size of the healthcare crisis and the difficulty in its management. But, Wallace added, the distribution of the vaccine will happen at the local level.

Wallace said he’d advise his family members to be vaccinated when they’re eligible.To skeptics or doubters, Wallace said to consider the thought of protecting their own family members who might be high risk: a relative who is older, or someone with a lung condition or diabetes.

“Right now, there’s so much community spread, that if you were to look at the risks you face from a serious complication from the vaccination, it’s minuscule,” Wallace said. “Your risk of dying from COVID is much greater right now.”

or manyy, turningg the calendar to January represents a clean slate – a time to start over, to reboot, to reassess,and hopefully to achieve.Especially after a challenging and unforeseen year like 2020,you might be considering a New Year’s resolution or two.

You’re not alone. Research shows that nearly 50% of American adults make at least one resolution. Setting these goals is often the simple part, but keeping or achieving them can be much more challenging.

The tradition of setting goals goes way back. Ancient Babylonians are said to have been the first people to make New Year’s resolutions, more than 4,000 years ago.

During an annual festival, Babylonians would crown a new king or reaffirm their loyalty to the reigning one, and while they were at it, they made promises to the gods.

These promises are what today’s modern New Year’s resolutions are based on.

In the Babylonian’s world,if they did not keep their promises, they would fall out of favor with the gods – a very undesirable place to be.And while today,failure on resolutions might not hold quite the same shame or fright as it did for our ancestors,most people are still disappointed in themselves when they fail at a resolution.

So, how can you make and keep or achieve a New Year’s resolution?

• Break big dreams into small steps. This will help you achieve the end result, but also keep you motivated along the way.If your resolution is to pay off debt, set an amount per month, for example.

• Make your resolution specific. If your goal is to lose weight, then set a number of pounds or percentage you want to achieve. A vague goal like “lose weight” doesn’t give you a target to aim for, and your motivation will wane quickly.

• Learn from the past. If your resolution is to get to the gym four times a week, and this is the same goal you’ve set for the past several years but never achieved, figure out what is stopping you. If you can pinpoint the hang-up, you can try to fix it – or you might realize that your resolution is unreasonable and therefore needs revision.

• Reward yourself. You don’t have to wait until December 31 to pat yourself on the back for achieving or keeping a resolution. That’s a long time to wait.

Give yourself mini rewards for achieving those small steps in a large goal, or for every month you stick with a resolution.

• Don’t let a setback get the best of you. If you’ve set a goal with a weekly or monthly target and you miss it, don’t just give up on your resolution altogether. Take a deep breath and keep moving forward.

• Consider reassessing.If you get partway through the year and realize that it will be near impossible to achieve your goal, consider why and decide how to make it more realistic. Adjusting a resolution is better than abandoning it completely.

• Enlist help. If you tell others about your resolution, you’re more likely to stick with it. Ask a friend to inquire every so often about your progress, or have your spouse or partner help clear hurdles that might keep you from achieving success.

And remember, resolutions don’t have to start on January 1 or end December 31.

Some goals don’t require a whole year, and you can set out to achieve a goal anytime, whether it’s on New Year’s Day or any of the other 364 days of the year.

Officials look for NoCo Owlz, sports complex to have ‘phenomenal’ impact on economy, quality of life

A

minor league baseball team, sports complex and retail development are all coming to Windsor. This multifaceted project will not only provide opportunities for athletes, but it is expected to create thousands of jobs and generate millions in sales tax revenue.

Future Legends Complex, which sits on 118 acres in the southeast corner of Windsor, will become the Northern Colorado Owlz home base after the team moves from Orem, Utah. It is expected to have three dozen sports related amenities — fields, a bubble dome facility, courts — restaurants, retail stores, dorm-style lodging for 18 | mywindsor | JANUARY 2021

participants and a hotel.

Casey Katofasky, Future Legends director of operations and co-founder, said his family loves sports and it has wanted to do a project like this for about a decade. Katofsky and his father, Jeff, worked to bring their vision to life but they hadn’t found the right location until now.

“We knew that the project up here was kind of started and slated as we intended, but it kind of fell through as well,” Katofsky said. Another developer was supposed to use the property for a similar purpose. “We got contacted about three years ago and asked if we wanted to be the owners of this project and utilize the space.”

Obviously, the answer was yes.

Katofsky said the family and

development staff always planned to build the complex around a professional team, and everything seemed to fall into place.

The Owlz’ lease on its former stadium was ending, and the family did not have to worry about moving players to Northern Colorado. Teams don’t retain them in the same way other leagues do; Katofsky likened it to a college team that may frequently have new players.

Major League Baseball has also joined with smaller baseball leagues — including the Pioneer League, in which the Owlz participate — to create the MLB Partner League. The Partner League can assist with certain operating costs, equipment and marketing.

Katofsky said the MLB expressed interest in working with the project and

the Pioneer League. This partnership will help the team, he said, but it also gives players a “direct path” to larger teams within the MLB and MiLB circuit.

The Owlz — which will retain their current logo and name — are expected to start their time in Windsor on Memorial Day weekend next year, pending additional COVID-19 restrictions. Barring any pandemicrelated hiccups, the Owlz will play 46 home games.

“I’m not a very doubtful person. Our family and the team that we have is about as confident as we can possibly be,” Katofsky said. “We’ve set ourselves up for as much success as we can have.

We have seen nothing but support since we’ve made this announcement. We’re really excited to be a part of this new opportunity.”

THE LARGER IMPACT Sports will only be part of the Future Legends Complex, though. While it can host youth, high school, collegiate and professional teams, the project features a lot more than just a few football fields or baseball diamonds.

Stacy Miller, director of the Windsor Economic Development office, said the complex is expected to create a tourism industry that hasn’t really existed before.

In a preliminary estimate, Miller said it could generate more than $5 million in sales tax revenue per year once completed in 2022.

Future Legends could bring roughly 1 million to 1.2 million visitors annually. The complex’s team anticipates half of the visitors to be from outside the region.

The complex itself should create roughly 600 jobs, and the development team hopes 9,000 jobs are created through the other retail and food service locations within one square mile of the facility. It is already advertising for spots in the complex, so businesses are encouraged to submit proposals.

Miller said Windsor has struggled to grow at the same rate as Greeley, Loveland and Fort Collins. Initially, the town didn’t have infrastructure or population in place to attract larger businesses, and it didn’t have these until right before the 2008 recession.

I-25 and Colorado 392 interchange that separates the two municipalities.

It included construction work, retail, dining and housing.

The Colorado Department of Transportation would not approve additional development until construction work on the bridge concluded. During that time, Windsor lost opportunities for revenue when interested businesses settled in Loveland, Johnstown and Timnath, she said.

A rise in online shopping, particularly Amazon, made it difficult for Windsor to attract large-scale retailers as well.

“When we had this idea of the sports park come into play, I realized the benefit of it,” Miller said. “Not only for the youth, but the revenue it was going to bring to the town was phenomenal.”

Miller said the way the complex is set up, it will bring people in from out of the immediate area, they will spend money at the nearby shops and restaurants, then they leave.

That revenue from the sales tax on dining, lodging and shopping goes to the town for services — police, fire, parks — without a large population increase. Miller said this money is called a “cleaner dollar” because the town will have to provide services to guests but not to the same scale as residents.

“That’s why I’ve fought so hard for this industry, because it puts less strain on our infrastructure and internal staff and services, but it provides us with a whole new revenue stream,” Miller said.

“We have a little bit of tourism with our golfing, but we don’t really have anything like this.”

Miller said she’s worked on the project for about seven years — longer than the Katofsky family has been

involved — and has held onto it with a “death grip,” because she saw the benefits it could bring to Windsor and the greater Northern Colorado region.

The complex and team could also have an unquantifiable impact on the area, too. Miller said she’s seen it in previous jobs where people will visit a location, really like it and end up moving there.

When that happens, they often bring their businesses or serve the community in some way. This isn’t something her office can measure — nor is it something that will be seen in the first year or two — but it can significantly impact that community’s future.

Other benefits include having the year-round shopping and dining options for locals, and the nature of the business is expected to bring people to Windsor during the weekend. Miller doesn’t expect a significant impact to businesses and commuting workers during the week.

Miller said she’s excited for the project on a professional and personal level — she’s a baseball fan — and looks forward to seeing it come to life.

Katofsky shared similar sentiments.

He wants the complex to be diverse, entertaining and something Windsor, Greeley and Fort Collins residents can be proud of.

“We really want to make sure the local community knows that this project is also for them. IT’s not just a national project. We’re not just businessmen that come in and create something and leave,” Katofsky said. “I moved my family out here to Northern Colorado and live here now. I have a whole team that moved out here.

We really want to be a part of the community.”

Chilly Weather Tips to Keep Your Best Friends Happy

f Colorado’s chilly winter weather is keeping you inside — day and/ or night — chances are your fourfooted besties aren’t spending much time outside either. The result: dogs acting out, endless barking, constant whining and sometimes destructive behavior like turning your best pair of loafers into chew toys.

Helping your best friend(s) find ways to exercise their minds and bodies is one of the best ways to keep your pups — and you! — from going berserk during Colorado winters and the ongoing pandemic (and anytime of year, actually).

How to do that?

Make lots of toys, stuffables and puzzles available throughout the day.

Kongs are high on the list for keeping dogs engaged and providing an outlet for chewing and licking. The hollow rubber toy can be filled with treats like pumpkin, aerosol cheese, cream cheese or peanut butter along with kibble, or they can be filled with his favorite wet dog food. Another tip: Freeze the Kongs first if you want your dog to spend an extended amount of time licking all the goodies out from the center.

Here’s another idea you can borrow: Teri Segelke, owner of J & T Feeds in Greeley, said her store manager freezes several Kongs for his dogs and hides them throughout his house so they have something to search for throughout the day.

Dog puzzles that reveal dog treats when puzzle pieces are moved, dislodged

or opened, are another positive way to engage your dog, especially during mealtime.

Keep in mind, however, that all these treats need to be counted as part of your dog’s daily food ration.

But you don’t need to spend a fortune keeping your dogs entertained and busy.

Take all those leftover Amazon boxes from the holidays and turn them into a hide-and-seek game by putting a few high-value treats inside and placing them in different places throughout the house. Another idea is to put a few treats in an old muffin tin and cover them with tennis balls and let her figure out how to get to the treats.

Nothing says you can’t have a quick game of indoor fetch afterward.

Davis, for example, when her border collie mix was much younger, used to

play fetch by tossing a tennis ball down a flight of stairs. He would wear himself out after several rounds of up and down, she said.

Indoor time is also a good time to work on obedience, such as recall.

Segelke suggests if there are two people available, then each go to a different part of the house or a different room and say “Fido, come.” When he does, he gets a treat.

No matter how cold, however, dogs still need outdoor playtime.

If yours is short-haired or coldblooded, wrap him in a cozy coat or sweater and maybe even a pair of booties to protect paws from the cold, ice, salt and ice melt on sidewalks and trails.

Davis likes Ultra Paws, which come with double foam insert for comfort and to help keep the booties securely on their paws. Some booties light up in the dark — perfect for nighttime strolls, she added.

In that way, we can intentionally imagine positive things happening from the progression of thoughts that begin with a negative one we purposefully challenge.

Stark said becoming aware of your worries offers self-compassion. In other words, it’s okay to tell yourself,“Look at all the things I’m carrying.”

The next step is intentionally focusing on what is true and good at that moment.

Keep in mind we never did know what the future held — we only thought we did.

“Being able to make peace with 2020 is a big step,”Stark counsels.

“By avoiding the ‘should’s’, as in ‘the pandemic shouldn’t have happened, I shouldn’t have lost that job,’and so on, we are resisting reality.That’s a painful place to live, and it’s unproductive, creating stress and frustration.”

The key, she said, is accept it is the reality, and then ask,“How can I pivot, stop fighting with reality, and move forward?”

In highly unusual ways, 2020 was a taxing year. Part of accepting reality is understanding that people have strong opinions on everything from maskwearing to whether the traffic light is yellow or orangey-red. Prevent different opinions from dragging you down by making decisions based on what’s right for you and your family. And this part is tough: getting angry because of other’s life choices only feeds your frustration.

Keeping your furnace operating smoothly for the winter months

our relationship between you and your furnace doesn’t have to be like Ralphie’s Dad and the furnace in A Christmas Story.

“It’s a clinker! That blasted stupid furnace dadgummit!” says Ralphie’s dad as he grumbles down the stairs in the movie.

With simple maintenance and annual visits from a professional you can keep your furnace running smoothly for years.

Jeff Allen, co-owner and operator of Allen Plumbing and Heating, has been in the business for a long time. Coowner with his brother, they are second generation owners in their 60th year of business.

“The easiest thing a homeowner can do is to make sure the filters are changed very regularly, and then the rest of the maintenance should be taken care of by a service professional,” says Allen.

“Some people are very comfortable with doing their own maintenance.They keep things clean looking. For manufacturer warranties and the health and safety of your family it’s important that an annual check be done by a service professional.”

That check will include things like making sure carbon monoxide levels are safe and not emitting out of any cracks.

“An annual service by a professional is like going for an annual doctor’s visit. You go to make sure everything is good for the next year. We make sure your furnace equipment is running as efficiently and safely as you can. You shouldn’t rely on a few filter changes a year and expect to be good to go.”

Allen says a new standard one-inch filter should look fairly white and pristine. Once dust, dander and dirt start accumulating it goes from a light grey to a dark grey. Once that color change happens and some buildup, it’s time to change the filter. A dirty filter keeps air from circulating through the filter at an efficient rate.

“When we go out on a service call it’s usually a smaller component that needs to be replaced and could have been prevented if the furnace had received regular maintenance,” he says.

Kevin Eddingfield, owner of Mighty Plumbing, suggests changing a $4$5 filter every 30 days or so and also recommends a service professional make an annual visit.

“The first thing to do is make sure to change your filters regularly. If your filters aren’t clean your furnace isn’t running optimally, which causes premature breakdown,” Eddingfield says.

Filter changes will vary depending on location, pets, dander, etc.

How long your furnace lasts will depend on many factors. Allen says if a system is installed by a professional, meets all code requirements, the homeowner changes filters on a regular basis and a professional HVAC company comes in at least annually, a furnace in the Northern Colorado area should last at least 12 years before you start to see the need for repair costs.

“Most manufacturers will tell you that between 12 and 15 years is when a lot of maintenance including repair or replacements can happen,” says Allen.

“At that point, you have to decide if you want to repair or replace with whatever new technology or efficiency is available.”

No different than servicing a car, if you take good care of equipment it should last a long time.

“Furnaces, any heating or cooling equipment really, are the things that hide down in the basement that you walk around all the time,” says Allen.
