NORTHERN COLORADO OWLZ BASEBALL TO BEGIN INAUGURAL SEASON IN MAY The Pioneer Baseball League on Thursday released the 2022 schedule, which includes 10 teams. It will begin in May and run until mid-September.

Commissioner Jim McCurdy said in a statement. “By adding two new teams in two new ballparks, the league is poised to build on its promise to sensibly expand throughout the Mountain States region. I’m truly impressed that we were able to put together this schedule that balances our clubs’ individual requirements with the league’s new mandate to significantly reduce travel times for the benefit of our players.”

The Northern Colorado Owlz, previously the Orem Owlz, is part of the league and one of two expansion teams.

A new team in Flathead, Montana, also joins the league for its inaugural season.

Northern Colorado will begin its season on May 25 in Great Falls, Montana. Its home opener is scheduled for June 2 against the Rocky Mountain Vibes.

The teams will play 96 games, with the season dived in half. The first half will end July 17, and the other half will end Sept. 10. The league is divided into two divisions.

WINDSOR WOMAN CREATES SOLUTION FOR SAFELY LEAVING ITEMS AT GRAVESITES

T

he death of a family member lead a Windsor woman to creating a product that makes paying respect at a gravesite a much safer and lasting process.

Regan Espinosa,launched a patent-pending product called Visit Box, that allows loved ones to store their items of love and honor at the memorial site for the deceased, according to her company’s press release.

During the grieving process, cemetery visitors have always left items and tokens of remembrance on graves. But what happens when these items become hazardous to the environment, wildlife and maintenance operations?

The Visit Box product stemmed from a search for a solution to problems, like weather, causing harm to wildlife or hazards to cemetery maintenance equipment, when it comes to what people put on gravesites.

In addition, people might not know most cemeteries have operational maintenance guidelines with rules on what can be left on graves due to hazards caused by certain objects. On many occasions, groundskeepers are forced to throw items that go against the guidelines away.

An example of a product that endangers wildlife and causes a burden to workers when caught in landscaping equipment is rosaries, a common item that loved ones leave on headstones.

Espinosa’s product solves these longstanding problems faced by maintenance crews and people paying respects at burial sites, the

Visit Box press release said.

Visit Box is a small and rectangular stone box that is weatherproof and can be secured to the foundation of any headstone.

The product helps eliminate the hurt and upset families face when items are cleared from a gravesite, as well as results in fewer arguments between cemetery employees and families when groundskeepers have to throw items away, according to Espinosa.

“The idea for Visit Box came from having lost my father after fighting cancer and then sudden cardiac death,” Espinosa said.

“Due to COVID-19 restrictions, my family could not come home with me for the funeral. I left a drawing from my daughter at his burial site and I returned the next day to see it blown into a nearby field. I had left a framed picture and months later it was eroding away. I wanted to create a product to help keep items that people leave at memorial sites secure from the elements, safer for wildlife and making sure that cemetery grounds would be free from litter.”

“It was heartbreaking to leave items at my father’s gravesite to help me grieve, she continued. “Weather and wildlife can ruin or blow away meaningful, personal items and it can be devastating to lose them. I was still not getting over my grief, and my personal circumstances after his loss led me to channel my pain into something positive in creating a special product to contain items safely and securely.”

Several members within the funeral industry provided feedback about the Visit Box when the product was presented for the first time ever at the National Funeral Director Association trade show and conference in Nashville, the release said.

GREELEY CHORALE Greeley Chorale lost the entire 2020 performing season due to the pandemic, but has reassembled with about 70 of their usual 85 members. They are excited about two upcoming holiday shows.On Saturday, December 4, the chorale will perform with 8 | mywindsor | DECEMBER 2021

the Greeley Philharmonic and Greeley Children’s Chorale in the Poinsettia Pops program at the Union Colony Civic Center.

Cliff Schultz, artistic and musical director for the Loveland Choral Society (LCS), has been leading the group for thirty years.

The concert will feature excerpts from Handel’s Messiah, Handel’s Messiah: A Soulful Celebration, carols both familiar and new, as well as professional soloists. “I think the joy of sharing Christmas music will be even more delightful this year than past seasons, because we are all looking forward to celebrating the season together an in-person,” says Smith-Bowman. “I truly believe that the joy of the music will be made even better because of the connection of the choir to the audience, sharing the experience.”

WINDSOR CHORALE The Windsor Chamber Chorale will host its Christmas concert on Saturday, December 5 at 4 p.m. at Cornerstone Baptist in Windsor. “We are extremely excited to be rehearsing again and we look forward to having an audience for our first concert in two years,” says treasurer Lainie Peltz.

“We try to bring a little bit of joy through our choral music that people may not be able to find elsewhere for free. COLORADO BACH ENSEMBLE After a hiatus because of the pandemic, the Colorado Bach Ensemble returns with its annual performance of Handel’s Messiah.

WELD HEALTH ANNOUNCES NNOUNCES MONOCLONAL ANTIBODY TREATMENT OPPORTUNITIES

T

he state health department recently launched monoclonal antibody treatment buses to expand access to the outpatient treatment for COVID-19, the Weld County Health Department announced in a news release Monday.

Though no mobile stops are scheduled in Weld County currently, mobile clinics are scheduled on shorter notice to ensure treatment is available in areas of the state that need it most,according to information from the state’s Joint Information Center.

The treatment works by blocking the virus that causes COVID-19 from entering human cells, making it more difficult for the virus to reproduce and cause harm.Monoclonal antibodies may also neutralize the virus, according to the release. Studies show high-risk patients treated with monoclonal antibodies were significantly less likely to get very sick and less likely to require hospitalization.

“The treatment is provided either intravenously or through a series of shots,either of which occur during a single appointment,” said Dr. Val Smith, communicable disease supervisor at Weld

Health, in the release. “The whole process, including posttreatment monitoring, will take 1-2 hours.”

The treatment is for those who have been diagnosed with COVID-19, have mild to moderate symptoms and are at high risk for progression to severe disease. Certain high-risk people who aren’t vaccinated or aren’t expected to respond adequately to vaccination may be eligible for post-exposure prophylaxis with monoclonal antibodies following exposure to COVID-19, according to the county.

No referral is required for monoclonal antibody treatment in Colorado. Residents who test positive can self-schedule appointments at a state monoclonal antibody therapy clinic. For more information, including treatment bus stops, go to covid19. colorado.gov/for-coloradans/covid-19-treatments.

Health officials state the treatment is not a substitute for vaccination against COVID-19, the county release notes.

4 INTERIM SUPERINTENDENT FINALISTS NAMED BY WELD RE-4 BOARD OF EDUCATION Candidates will be interviewed Dec. 7; board also rebalances director district boundaries

he Weld RE-4 School District Board of Education, serving students in Windsor and Severance schools, took a step toward solidifying district leadership on Tuesday evening with the selection of four finalists to serve as interim superintendent.

The board will interview Rod L. Blunck, Virginia Moon, Sandy L. Cosner and David Dude on Dec. 7, make its selection and negotiate with the temporary leader to be in place in January. Blunck, Moon and Dude have doctorate degrees, according to the district.

With the resignation of Dan Seegmiller earlier this month, district director of instruction Amy Heinsma was named acting superintendent through Jan. 3.

The four-person board — Russ Smart, Lance Nichols, Regan Price and Aaron Smith — made their decision to interview the four finalists in a nearly one-hour executive session during a special meeting at the district administration 12 | mywindsor | DECEMBER 2021

building Tuesday evening in Windsor.

Weld RE-4 chief operating officer Jason Seybert said the district received four applications to replace Seegmiller, who resigned after the failure of the $179 million bond measure following his six years as superintendent and nearly 17 years in the district. The board chose to interview all four candidates.

Blunck is an associate clinical professor at the University of Colorado Denver, according to his LinkedIn page.

He has a doctorate in educational leadership from Nova Southeastern University in Florida and from 2006-12 was the superintendent of 27J School District for students from Aurora, Brighton, Commerce City, Lochbuie and Thornton before retiring.

Moon, who has a doctorate in education from Kansas State, is an interim superintendent for Auburn Public Schools in Auburn, Nebraska, according to her LinkedIn

page She previously served as interim superintendent for page. schools in Kearney and Omaha, Nebraska. She spent 11 years as superintendent of Ralston Public Schools in Ralston, Nebraska.

Cosner is a former principal at Chappelow and McAuliffe in Greeley-Evans School District 6, according to District 6 chief of communications Theresa Myers.

Dude is an Atlanta area educator. He has a doctorate in educational policy and leadership studies from the University of Iowa, according to his LinkedIn page. He was the superintendent and chief executive officer of City Schools of Decatur in Decatur, Georgia from 2015 until June, also according to LinkedIn. Dude was placed on paid administrative leave by the Decatur board of education in the spring, and a week later, the board ended Dude’s contract following questions about his business conduct, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution.

The website Decaturish.com, an outlet dedicated to news and information on Decatur and other areas in the Atlanta metropolitan region, reported on Dude’s separation from the district in an April 27 story. The story said Dude left the school system following months of investigative stories

by Decaturish.com that examined allegations raised by the district’s former human resources director.

The story said Dude had been under fire over allegations that he took more vacation than he was allowed under his contract. Claims about this were initially raised in a lawsuit filed by the former human resources director, David Adams.

Adams alleged he and a former finance director were pushed out of the district by Dude after they asked questions about Dude’s time away from the office. It was later found Dude’s most recent contract made it harder and more expensive for the Decatur board to fire him, also according to the Decaturish.com story.

boundaries to even up the number of residents represented by each board member.The information and new boundaries will be posted on the district website on Wednesday, and the district will then begin taking applications to replace board president Jennifer Lieber.

Lieber, who announced her resignation four days after Seegmiller, represented District D, an area of Weld RE-4 primarily serving residents who live north of Colo. 392 including Gander Valley Lane to the north, Hollister Lake Drive in the center of District D, Saratoga Way and Ash, Walnut and Oak streets to the south.

Smith represents District A, Price has District B, Nichols has District C and Smart, the board president, represents District E. Lieber’s seat will be filled by appointment in early January, according to information on the Weld RE-4 website.

Applications will be available at the district office Dec. 1-16.

The office is located at 1020 Main St. in Windsor and is open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Residents who apply for Lieber’s seat must live in District D. Seybert said before the redistribution approved by the board on Tuesday, District B had a population of 5,466 residents while the District A director was responsible for 11,275 residents.

Under the new boundaries, which were drawn up for the board by a firm that provides planning information to school districts, there will be less disparity in the number of residents represented by each board member. District A will be responsible for 8,289 residents, District B 8,283, District C 8,228, District D for 8,434 and District E for 8,371 residents.

Before making its decision the board heard from Scott Torlucci, a senior project manager with Davis Demographics who participated in the meeting by phone.Torlucci went over multiple boundary options for the board to consider.

WINDSOR WIZARDS’ WINTER HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS PREVIEW

GIRLS BASKETBALL Few teams statewide are likely to come into the season any hungrier than Windsor's girls.

A season ago, the Wizards went 16-2 and were the 4A runner-up, losing to Mullen in the finals, 67-44.

Windsor should come back strong this season with a senior-led group.

This past season’s leading scorer, Kylie Sanger, has graduated. But, she was the only senior on the team.

Among the returnees: senior Olivia Reed, who averaged

14.4 points, 10.9 rebounds, 2.5 steals and 1 block per game a year ago. She’s poised for a big season, as is this entire Wizards squad.

Fellow seniors Jolie Jiricek and Mykaela Moore are also poised for big seasons after averaging 10.2 and 9.4 points, respectively, a season ago.

Windsor will play at least seven games before winter break, including a trip to Rocky Mountain High School for an early-season tournament Dec. 9-11.

BOYS YS BASKETBALL The Wizards boys basketball team had another highly successful season a year ago, despite perhaps not advancing qu uite as far as it would have liked in the Class 4A postseason.

Windsor went 14-2 and was the top seed in the 32team postseason. The Wizards advanced to the eight-team quarterfinals before falling to No. 9 Pueblo South 86-70.

Windsor will need to reload a bit this season after graduating its top 3 scorers and top 4 rebounders from this past season's team. One prime candidate to step up: junior David Hageman, who averaged 9.8 points, 3.8 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.7 steals a season ago.

Senior Parker Seyboldt also could be a key player after playing in just two varsity games a season ago. And sophomore Johnathan Reed should be a force on the boards.

Windsor will play at least a half-dozen games before winter break, including a tournament campaign at Fossil Ridge Dec. 1-4.

GIRLS SWIMMING & DIVING A season ago, Windsor placed seventh in the 4A girls swimming and diving state championships.

The Wizards have been a staple in the top 10 at state tournaments in recent years, and this year should be no different.

Among the team's returnees, senior Nicole Reynolds was fourth in the 50 free and fourth in 100 free at state this past season.

Fellow senior Megan Dodrill placed 10th in 100 free and 11th in the 200 free.

Senior Delaney Engel was 11th in 200 IM and 12th in 100 breaststroke. Senior Amelia Perkins was 11th in 100 breaststroke.

Each of these seniors will no doubt look to improve on those state performances this winter.

And, of course, one can also expect some youngsters to make a big impact, which is always a calling card of Windsor's dynamic program.

BOYS WRESTLING Windsor enters this season with a bit of a different coaching structure, but the Wizards, no doubt, will have the same lofty expectations.

Earlier this year, legendary coach Monte Trusty had initially decided to retire as Windsor's coach, with the Wizards having won four state titles under Trusty’s direction.

Since then, however, Trusty has opted to co-coach this season's team, along with Ben Cherrington, a former University of Northern Colorado head coach and a former NCAA champion.

Though Trusty will no doubt be scaling back his responsibilities a bit, Cherrington is more than capable of taking on a sizable chunk of the leadership responsibilities within the Wizards program.

In addition to being an NCAA champion in 2006, Cherrington is a former Pac-10 Wrestler of the Year, a member of the Pac-12 All-Century Team, a multi-time Pac-10 champion and a member of the Boise State athletics hall of fame. He spent the past few years as a volunteer assistant at Windsor, under Trusty.

This past March, Windsor placed seventh at state, as Cheyenne Mountain walked away with the team title.

The Wizards won their most recent state title in 2020.

BOYS BASKETBALL Playing in its first varsity season in program history a year ago, Severance went 9-6 and advanced to the first round of the 32-team 4A postseason.

He’ll be well complemented by senior Carson Fagan (13.5 PPG, 4.1 RPG) and sophomore Brady Varney (11.2 PPG, 7.7 RPG).

Not having a senior a season ago,the Silver Knights bring back everyone this season, including 6-foot-8 junior Ty Adam, who averaged 17.7 points, 8.7 rebounds and 1.3 steals a season ago.

Severance will play at least seven games before winter break, including a pair of tournaments, at Fossil Ridge and at the Power 2 Play Sports Events Center in Windsor.

GIRLS BASKETBALL Severance really didn’t look like a first-year varsity program a season ago, going 8-7 and advancing to the first round of the 4A state tournament.

As the school didn’t have any seniors a year ago,the Silver Knights bring back their entire team, including seniors Natalia Puchino and Kelsey Koza.

Puchino — also a star softball player — averaged 12.8 points, 5.3 rebounds, 6.2 assists and 2.3 steals per game a season ago. Koza averaged 12.5 points,

4.1 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 2.3 steals.

Forming the third part of a threeheaded monster, senior Anastasia Zelenko averaged 11.7 points, 10.1 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 3.1 steals and 2.3 blocks per game.

Severance opens its second varsity season in program history with at least eight games before winter break, including tournaments at Westminster High School and Rocky Mountain High School.

BOYS WRESTLING In its second year with a varsity program,the Silver Knights took some considerable steps forward, placing 15th at the 3A state tournament after tying for 34th the year before.

Also,at 120 pounds,Tommy Thomas placed fifth at state as a sophomore.

Severance increased its number of state qualifiers from two in 2020 to three this past season.

They come into the season ranked fourth in 3A by On The Mat. Individually, Sisneros is ranked second at 106, Thomas is sixth at 120, junior Killian Schultz is fourth at 145, and Runner is first at 182.

As a sophomore, Colby Runner placed second at 195 pounds, earning his second consecutive spot on the state tournament podium.

This winter,the Silver Knights bring back all three state qualifiers,including sophomore Devante Sisneros.

GIRLS WRESTLING In the Colorado High School Activities Association’s first year sanctioning girls wrestling, Severance didn’t qualify a wrestler for the state tournament in March.

But, this season, the Silver Knights’ upstart program will look to build a

solid foundation as it embarks on five competitions before winter break.

Within the early-season slate, Severance will compete in the Northern Colorado Christmas Tournament at the University of Northern Colorado on Dec. 17-18.

These days, local businesses don’t just compete with big boxes and department stores, they compete with everything on the World Wide Web. But choosing gifts for people – selecting something perfectly matched to personality and preferences, that adequately conveys your love and appreciation for them – can be trickier than making sure another case of paper towels arrives before the last one runs out.

hat do your holidays look like this year?

Many things contribute to holiday stress. In our communities there are Christmas lights everywhere and as in the past we see beautiful angel trees identifying families who are not doing well financially. Without the help of others they may not have Christmas this year. Not to mention COVID-19 or other stressors such as the breakup of 24 | mywindsor | DECEMBER 2021

families, divorce, a terminal diagnosis or you fill in the blank… The American Psychological Association and Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research conducted a study to explore stress during the holidays. Time, money and commercialism are high on the list of worries for people during the holidays.

Work is also reported as a bigger source of stress than the demands at home.

Low salaries, lack of appreciation, lack

of job advancement and high workload take on a different character when the holidays arrive as people worry about finances and the expectations of the holiday. Holiday stress statistics show 69 percent of people are stressed by ‘perceiving a lack of money’, and 51 percent are stressed out about the “pressure to give or get gifts”.

Another reason for stress is family.

Even though Christmas should be jolly,

stress increases for those family members who are taking the responsibility to make the holiday perfect. Christmas should be a time of good cheer the stress comes when it becomes difficult just to try and get everyone together under one roof for dinner. Disappointment walks in when someone cannot travel because of choice, illness or other responsibilities.

I’ll be home for Christmas is not the ordinary, if it ever was. If war doesn’t keep us away from our families, other things will. As a result many families skype or use tech as their Christmas greetings or gathering.

Stress, anxiety and depression are not uncommon and may occur at any time of the year, however, during the months of November and December, they are unwanted guests at our dinner table. Social isolation is one of the biggest indicators for depression.

WINTER ...whenever winter finally arrives

hile it has been an unusually un-wintery year so far in the Front Range, heavy snow is always a possibility – and always seems to catch drivers by surprise when it finally appears.

But if you’re one of those weekend warriors geared up to do battle on I-70 to hit your favorite ski resort, or just contemplating the necessity of a midwinter trip on the frozen plains, you understand the necessity of prepping your vehicle to be ready for the worst that winter can (and probably will) throw at us.

Dan Moyer, owner of Loveland’s Metric Motors, said the additional demands placed on our automobiles in freezing temperatures – not to mention the potential dangers of being 28 | mywindsor | DECEMBER 2021

stuck on the side of the road during a winter-related highway closure – all suggest some preventative measures and planning for a safer winter driving season.

“The biggest priorities are proper tires, plus your car’s battery, starting system and cooling system,” Moyer said. “We want to ensure traction on the road, see if your vehicle will start and if the system is healthy, and also make sure that your cooling system is well protected.”

Moyer said a good preventative check-up will test the battery and starter, making sure the system is not draining too much power, as cold weather puts an additional strain on your car’s electrical components. Engine coolant levels (and antifreeze strength) should also be checked, he adds.

“Old coolant isn’t doing its job and is less efficient, so that should be inspected, as cold weather can cause leaks, seepage or cracked hoses.”

When it comes to tires, Moyer recommends a set of efficient all-seasons for every driver, even those who don’t plan on heading up to the hills. Those who do will also need to be mindful of the Colorado State Patrol’s newer rules requiring real winter tires, chains or other traction devices on the mountain passes – otherwise you can be fined if your vehicle impairs traffic flow, or even if you end up in an accident.

“The general rule for winter tires is that you should have them any time between November and April, as a big snow storm can hit at any time, even down here,” he said. “But your average

driver on the Front Range just needs a good all-season tire with enough tread depth to offer traction. You also need to make sure your tires are not too old, as rubber gets harder as it ages and the traction is not so good anymore.”

Speaking of traction, Moyer cautions everyone with an all-wheel-drive SUV or car that such technology isn’t necessarily a foolproof solution to winter travel woes.

“People tend to think that their allwheel-drive car will start and stop as well as a real four-wheel drive, but that’s not the case. All-wheel drive is a part-time system and only becomes active when traction is required. You need to know your car’s limits – and tires are still a big part of that.”

For those who actively anticipate being on snowy mountain roads throughout the winter, there’s a much wider range of options for dedicated winter tires – and many more brands to choose from. Companies such as

Goodyear have also created some hybrid products such as the WinterCommand Ultra tire, which provides excellent traction on snow, ice or in wet conditions, but is also manufactured to be a bit softer than traditional winter tires, allowing it a longer life and better ride comfort.

Bridgestone’s Blizzak winter tires still remain a popular favorite, and other

highly rated choices include Pirelli’s P Zero Winter tires, Michelin’s X-Ice Snow, Continental’s VikingContacts or the slightly exotic Nokian Hakkapeliittas, from the Finnish company that created winter tires in the first place.

The Colorado chapter of the American Automobile Association also suggests drivers pre-equip their cars with winter necessities including a blanket and an extra set of clothes, a jug of winter-rated windshield washer fluid and non-clumping kitty litter – which can also be used to provide necessary emergency traction if you’re stuck spinning your wheels in a tricky, icy spot.

Those supplement regular year-round emergency items including jumper cables, a flashlight, a first aid kit and drinking water.

The AAA also sells pre-equipped winter emergency car care kits that include additional necessities such as a folding shovel, ice scraper and emergency candles.

Kid’s Nite Out (KNO) Across America is a youth activity program held weekly at the Windsor Community Recreation Center. KNO provides a fun, safe, active environment for every participant. A variety of games and activities are offered, such as swimming, dancing to a DJ, sports tournaments, arts and crafts, and more! Admission is $15 per person. Dinner vouchers are also available for purchase for $7. This includes pizza and a drink or sub sandwich, chips, and a drink. Dates are subject to change.
