S

tudents in the Weld RE-4 School District will have the option to wear masks for the upcoming school year, according to guidance released by the district on Monday morning.

Last month, the district serving students in Windsor, Severance and west Greeley and the school board heard from parents and community members demanding answers on a policy surrounding masks On Monday, the district responded with an email to families that outlined guidance on eight different areas related to education during COVID-19 for the 2021-2022 school year.

The district’s information says masks will be optional for those who want to wear them — and the district will not issue any kind of mandate on vaccination against COVID-19.

The first day of school is Aug. 11, and all students will attend school daily in person following a schedule as before the pandemic.

“Our expectation is that staff or students will be treated respectfully whether they choose to wear a mask or not,” district officials wrote in the email that outlined guidance in English and Spanish. “While we will provide informa-

tion to staff and students about opportunities to vaccinated, the district will not request, collect or store staff member or student’s personal COVID-19 vaccination records.”

Weld RE-4 spokesperson Lisa Relou said in an email the district won’t require students to have a COVID-19 vaccine because it’s not on the list of school-required vaccines from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.

Windsor resident Aaron Smith, who is a member of a newly formed parents group called Guardians of RE-4, said he is happy with the district’s decision on making masks and vaccines optional. Smith was one of the community members who addressed the board during its June 21 meeting.

“Fantastic,” Smith said. “As far as this piece, it’s fantastic with the policy as it’s written.”

If a student or staff member tests positive for COVID-19 or shows symptoms of the disease, the student or staff member will be asked to isolate and stay home from school and away from school-sponsored events including athletics, until a medical professional clears the student or staff member to return to school, according to the guidance.

The district said it will not conduct regular temperature checks. It will not initiate quarantines for healthy

staff and students who have been in close contact with a confirmed case of COVID-19 and don’t show any symptoms.

Students who exhibit symptoms in school will be given a mask to wear while they wait in the health room to be picked up from school.

“Staying home when sick will be essential to limiting exposures and transmission,” district officials wrote in the email.

The district also said it will continue with enhanced cleaning protocols established at each of its buildings last year, as well as circulating outdoor air and enhancing ventilation in schools. Hand sanitizer will be available and frequent hand-washing will be encouraged.

Throughout the school year, district officials and the board of education heard from parents and community groups looking for information and guidance as the pandemic evolved.

OTHER INFORMATION IN THE EMAIL INCLUDES: • The length of the school day — with start and

dismissal times — for district schools: Elementary schools, 7:55 a.m. to 2:45 p.m.; middle schools, 8:35 a.m. to 3:55 p.m.; and high schools, 8:40 a.m. to 3:50 p.m.

• Field trips, athletics and activities will resume

as normal, according to Colorado High School Activities Association.

• The district will transport students based on the

following information: elementary students who live beyond a 1-mile radius from school; middle school students who live beyond a 1.5-mile radius from schools; and high school students who live beyond a 2-mile radius from their school. Route information will be shared directly with families the week before the start of school.

• Chromebooks will be issued to secondary students

during the first week of school.

• Schools will welcome visitors to their building

aligned with their typical school-year procedures.

Indoor and outdoor school events will have no capacity limits.

• Free meals, breakfast and lunch, will be available

to all Weld RE-4 students throughout the 2021/22 school year. Students will eat meals in the cafeteria. A la carte items will be available for purchase at middle and high schools.

• Facility rentals will resume for the 2021-22 school

year.

The ABCs Of Opening New Education Centers In The Windsor Community

T

here’s good news for Windsor families.While ABC Child Development Centers already has three Bright SchoolAge Centers in the Windsor Community,this month they opened ABC Windsor, providing care for infants and up and preschool.

“We have three school-aged programs in Windsor at Windsor Charter Academy, Grandview and Skyview,” says Scott Bright, owner.“We have long wanted to provide a full scope of childcare and early childhood education resources for our families in Windsor. We have been looking for quite some time to expand into Windsor.”

During the past 15 years,Bright says he got to know the owners of the former Windmill Child Enrichment Center in Windsor.

“We really liked what we saw with the program they put together. We were waiting for the right time to move into the Windsor market. Knowing what Windmill had going on we didn’t want to jump in and compete right out the gate. We put a bug in their ear letting them know if they ever wanted to retire or move on, we were a candidate to purchase the facility.”

They closed July 19th and the next day re-opened as ABC

Windsor. It is currently licensed to provide care for about 160 kids, infant through preschool, offering childcare and preschool.

“We’re anxious to expand and continue the legacy of great child care and early childhood education to Windsor families through the Windmill Center,”Bright says.

ABC Child Development Centers has been providing early childhood education,childcare,preschool and school-age care in Greeley for more than 50 years. It is a third generation, familyowned business. All of the childcare centers are quality-rated by the state of Colorado, each one ranking five out of five on the quality scale.

“Less than 10 percent of childcare centers in Colorado have that rating,”says Bright.“No other centers in Weld County have 5’s. We’re very proud of that.”

Hiring practices are a big part of creating a great place for kids, and Bright says they do their best to develop the highest quality childhood professionals.

“We offer in-house training to help them become experts in their field. We focus on quality and preparation. It attracts folks who really want to develop their career as an early childhood professional. We want to make sure we have a reputation for having the best staff available and being the best.”

ABC Child Centers partner with the school districts in the

areas they serve, including Greeley School District 6 and ALT RE-9 to provide most of their Colorado preschool programming and special education preschool services.

“Preschool is a much different thing than childcare,even though it’s often done in a childcare setting. Many families have chosen school district RE-4 for half-day

preschool programs and I applaud parents for realizingg they need to get kids readyy for school. Talk to anyy kindergarten, first, second or third grade teacher and they will tell you their job becomes so much easier when kids come in ready to learn,”he says.

“Pre-k has a very specific focus. It’s very purposeful. We’ve developed a reputation for having an excellent pre-k program. We’ll be implementing that pre-k program at ABC Windsor as well. We look forward to meeting families serious about getting their kids ready for school.”

hey came with wagons filled with chairs and coolers or bags stuffed with blankets and snacks.

Some had kids while others came solo, with a partner or even their dog.

No matter what or who they brought, hundreds of people descended on Boardwalk Park on Thursday evening for the first Taste of Windsor after a grueling year of staying inside and away from crowds due to COVID-19.

While the annual event is popular with community members of Windsor and the surrounding cities of Greeley, Evans and Loveland,Thursday’s event seemed to be a record breaker as the park was jam-packed even before the event was slated to begin at 5 p.m.

“It’s been a long time since we’ve had to park so far away for this,” attendee Susan Bilson said as she towed a wagon filled with grandkids over to the park. “We usually get here early, but maybe we should have gotten here even earlier this year.”

By 6:30 p.m., finding an open space in the main area of the grass in front of the pavilion was a challenge.

some more people in my community too,” she said.

Despite being located on Main Street in Windsor, it was also the first time Poudre Pet and Feed Supply participated in the event.

“I love it. It’s got really good vibes,” said Emily Irwin, assistant manager for the company’s Loveland location.

“People are coming by that don’t know we exist even though we are on Main Street. It’s really cool and fun.”

Lonesome Buck Brewing, Chick Fil A, Rat’s Woodshed Barbecue, Waffle Lab and various other food trucks worked double time to get customers served and back to their seats before the concert portion of the event began.

The vendors and food trucks participating in the event were more than thrilled to see the long lines winding around from their parked spots.

“It’s so hard to choose what to eat,”laughed Greg Verbian from Loveland. “Everything smells so good. I do know that I am going to hit up that ice cream truck. But what else? I am not sure.”

The University of Northern Colorado provided a huge blow-up apparatus, and some of the school’s athletes were in attendance to throw footballs around with kids or play corn hole.

Melanie Nelson brought out her Color Street nail stickers to showcase to attendees at the event. It was her first time attending the Taste of Windsor.

The Stolen Winnebagos! band took the stage to get people up and dancing. The Kansas-based trio performed a variety of music that included classic rock, new wave, grunge and hip hop as well as hits from the 1950s to 1980s.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says students should return to in-person learning this fall.

Are schools ready? I wanted to know what RE-4 was planning for 2021 so I spoke to Michelle Scallon, Windsor High School Principal, she had this to say about the upcoming year:

What do you think of the CDC saying students should return to in-person learning this year? “The district stance is full-time in person with no masks. Students can wear them if they choose.”

Make a safety plan, involve your child in therapy.

Encourage your child to be involved in the community and at school perhaps in an Advisory Class.

Do you think the pandemic has hurt children’s learning and how much ground has been lost? “ Yes some learning loss, not sure how to measure. Remote learning did work for some, however, the social aspect was difficult for some students.”

What percent of students struggle with school depression and anxiety and how are these cases handled? “We have no precise numbers but in the last 2 years numbers have risen. We have an Advisory Class that is grade-specific to support kids and give them resources to use. Our counseling team has made themselves accessible during the pandemic for Tele counseling. We also refer to outside sources.”

It is important for parents to reassure their children and tell them what to expect from school.This will help them feel more grounded and help them along their way.

What would you like the students to know regarding the 2021 school year? “Dan Seegmiller, Superintendent, and the district leadership is trying really hard to deal with these issues. We pride ourselves and our school on the relationships we have with our students. We miss them, we want them and we love them and we will keep them safe. Be kind to each other.

others Against Drunk Driving is hosting its annual Northern Colorado Walk Like MADD fundraising event to raise awareness for drunk and drugged driving on Aug. 21 at Windsor

MADD is a nonprofit started by a mother in California whose daughter was killed by a drunk driver in 1980. Jeff Trujillo, in charge of this year’s walking event, said MADD is now the largest nonprofit in the nation dedicated to serving victims and survivors of drunk driving.

“Drunk driving, and now in Colorado, drugged driving with the legalization of marijuana is something that we shouldn’t even have to be talking about this anymore,”Trujillo said. “It’s something that is completely 100% preventable.”

Trujillo said the Walk Like MADD event is the largest 16 | mywindsor | AUGUST 2021

event of the year through the nonprofit. Adults can register to walk in a 5K for $25, and youths ages 5 to 18 can register for $20. All people who register can choose to walk individually or with a team.

“So, Mothers Against Drunk Driving exists to provide support to people who are going through these tragedies, these awful circumstances,” Trujillo said. “And so, when people come out to events like this, and they make a donation or they raise money for us, that allows us to continue providing services to these families and to these victims with no charge.”

Three places throughout Colorado –– Denver, Colorado Springs and northern Colorado –– host a fundraising and walking event. In total, the goal MADD wants to reach for all three walking sights is $165,000.

Despite having separate locations, the nonprofit is connecting people across the state by walking towards the same goal. Trujillo said this year’s event will be the sixth 5k

walk in northern Colorado, which usually takes place in Greeley.

For 2021, the walk is relocated to Windsor Lake because two of the top fundraisers from Windsor, bringing in 25-30% of the funds for the event for several years, made a request to bring the event closer to their home.

“Being in Windsor now I think moves us a little further into the center of the … northern Colorado metropolitan area,”Trujillo said.“So we really would love to see people come out from all communities.You know from Windsor, from Greeley, from Fort Collins, from Severance, from Loveland … all these communities up there that are facing the exact same problem.”

Because of COVID-19, last year’s event was virtual, but people still continued to support the cause during a time of hardships. The organizers of the Walk Like MADD event decided to cut back financially on the amount of money they wanted to raise, but they ended up surpassing the original in-person goal.

Trujillo said as far as growth goes for this event, they plan to match the goals of the last in-person event from 2019. But he hopes to continue to see the growth increase every year.

“The event has been slowly growing every year, but it is still fairly small I guess compared to what we see in the Denver metro area,” Trujillo said. “We’ve got about 150 people that come out for the events, and we would like to see 150,000. Because this is an event that really drives awareness, like I said, to the fact that this is something that should not be in existence right now.”

How and why should people get involved?

Other than signing up to walk on a team or individually, Walk Like MAAD has many other opportunities to get involved. Trujillo said people can make donations or volunteer if they don’t want to walk. Another option is to register virtually to walk in spirit and still raise money for a great cause.

Trujillo said they are also looking for more corporations to get involved as sponsors and encouraging companies to form teams. Multiple law enforcement agencies, like the Greeley Police Department and the Colorado State Patrol have formed teams and have a huge presence at these events.

“In Colorado last year, 208 lives were taken because of impaired driving,”Trujillo said.“And that’s 208 lives that should have never been taken from us because there are so many options for people to not make the choice to drink and drive or consume marijuana and drive.You know, they can take an Uber, a Lyft, a taxi, the bus, the light rail, they can call a friend … heck, call a helicopter.”

Helping your child shine in the new school year

asing back into the school year, Weld RE-4 School District administrators hope to harness their students’ enthusiasm about returning to in-person learning.

The mantra of “We’re Back — Better, Accountable, Creative,Kind”embraces a goal to make education better, Windsor High School principal, Michelle Scallon, said.

“We’re coming back taki king i the good things we learned from remote learning and we’re not going back.”

Scallon acknowledges that faculty ty, y staff and students are all in the same boat — no one has experienced a global pandemic before.She believes establishing relationships that will support kids kii tops the list.“The reason we’re here is to get our kids kii ready for the world.”

Here’s the breakdown of ideas Scallon,WHS assistant principal Dick Thomas, and Shelly Prenger, principal of Mountain View Elementary, encourage parents to keep in mind when preparing students for a successful academic year.

Start a routine for homework and bedtime Prenger expects to see 481 students, grades 3-5, return in August. She recommends that primary school age children establish earlier bedtime routines a week or two before school starts. “Consistent routines (get pajamas on, brush your teeth, read a story, lights out) lend themselves to success and a peaceful end to the day,”she wrote in an email.

Prenger sees downtime and play as essential for recharging.

Allowing older children some independence in bedtime routines and school prep,letting them help make those decisions, can lead to greater acceptance.Prenger recommends that all ages, adults included, turn off screens 30 minutes to an hour before bedtime.

Dick Thomas, assistant principal at WHS, said he’d like to think that high schoolers would realize they’ve got to adjust their schedule as summer wanes.He said the age-group typically comes to a realization, if they’re struggling with exhaustion, that they can’t stay up until 3 am playing video games or hanging with friends.“Parents can try to put them on a schedule,but sometimes it’s just [the kids] figuring it out.”

Teachers know that time is precious. After eight hour school days, followed by sports, activities, and potentially working until midnight, Scallon said WHS will limit homework to help students establish a school-life balance.

WHS offers advisory classes for building relationships and teaching life skills, including communication, problem solving and empowering kids to have self-management, she said.

Classes focus on teaching kids to have grit. “It’s being resilient, persevering.We’re giving those kids the skills they’ll need,they’re going out to a world where there are jobs not created yet. We’re preparing kids for an unknown future.”

Keep lines of communication open between students, teachers and parents Scallon said staff, students, parents and the Windsor community worked hard during COVID and the remote learning period to stay connected to WHS kids. Lessons follow state standards, incorporating self-care, self advocacy, and a goal for each kid to have one adult in the school building upon whom they can rely to talk about worries, concerns and life.

Part of relationship-building is understanding how education can be improved, including replicating successful elements of the remote learning period.The school will harness the power of computers,social media and different apps,along with a learning management system — CANVAS — to allow students full access to assignments, videos and lessons.

“We encourage teachers to get feedback from students about how they’re doing and whether current learning methods meet their needs.We’ll ask students,‘how do you learn best?’”Thomas said.“It’s valuable to keep an open mind to get the feedback and adjust in the classroom.”

High school freshmen take a health class addressing nutrition and wellness. To help kids without access to breakfast, or those who sleep late and are out the door with minutes until class starts, WHS is offering all students free breakfast and lunch through next summer thanks to a National School Lunch Program grant.

Engage in empathetic listening with your child The bottom line for success is communication with the entire team, all principals agreed. “I think before you can teach [kids] math, you need to teach them that they’re safe, loved, there are rules, but this is our school family,”Scallon said.

That includes encouraging kids to pursue personalized projects and supporting those who want to wear a mask.

Prenger underscores the importance of conversations about hopes, goals and worries for the year, asking kids how they feel about changes in school routines.

Get that smile ready for school

Richter has seen thousands of children pass through his practice in the past 26 years. In addition to direct services, he also is an innovator and holds a patent for a computer-based technology that allows dentists to navigate three-dimensional data to help correct jaw movement. He also has a patent pending for an advanced retainer design, according to RichterOrthodontics.com.

The summer months in advance of back-toschool time are busy for dentists and orthodontists as they evaluate children for dental care and braces.

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends doctors see children by age 7 to screen them for future needs. Typically, braces are fitted when kids are in sixth or seventh grades, although every child is unique in their needs.

The average time spent in braces is 22 months, Richter said. But technology is changing the face of orthodontia with new designs and materials knocking off the time spent in braces up to 40 percent.

Technology is changing processes, but the goal of a great smile remains paramount. "(Children) come to us at an awkward time and put their hands over their mouths. It's a total transformation and it's a life-changing event for them. And adults, too," Richter said. "When my patients come back for a retainer check, they say everybody compliments me on my smile.

He said orthodontists had been placing the same brackets on patients and adjusting wire sizes since the 1970s, which took time and multiple visits. Once a certain wire size was reached, doctors had to reposition the brackets.

But newer approaches digitally scan the teeth and produce a 3-D image of the mouth, which is used to create a template of where the braces are supposed to be on the teeth.That accuracy removes the need to reposition brackets, said Richter, who is a scientific adviser for KLOwen Orthodontics and a key opinion leader for InBrace Orthodontics.

"It's kind of like walking from point A to Point B in a straight line versus walking your dog, where they go from one side of the sidewalk to the other. We're taking of the human element out of it," he said. "I have over 400 patients in them now, and we are seeing shorter treatments up to 30 percent or 40 percent of the time."

Alternatives including braces for the back teeth and Invisalign clear braces also are options for adolescents and adults.

"Most of the time, kids are in metal braces, but we do offer the clear braces, if they want. They are pretty much the same and a bit bulkier so they don't break," the orthodontist said.

Richter said he doesn't recommend removing braces for senior photos; instead, he suggests that parents and students plan their timeframe around senior photos or photoshop them out of the student portraits. Or, students can wear the Invisalign clear braces that cannot be seen in photos.

Younger children still have the option of customizing their braces with the bracket colors of their choice.

The most-asked question he gets is whether braces will hurt. While there is discomfort when braces are put on or adjusted, new materials also have reduced the time that patients will feel soreness.

ormer Weld RE-4 School District Superintendent Karen Trusler is the lone finalist for the year-long interim superintendent job in the Weld RE-5J School District, a system that’s seen some rocky times in recent months while serving students in the Johnstown and Milliken areas.

Trusler retired from the Windsor and Severance district in July 2015 after nine years as superintendent and 37 years in the school system.

Trusler was interviewed by the five-person Weld RE-5J Board of Education during a special virtual meeting Wednesday afternoon. Trusler taught for 20 years at the elementary grade levels, and also worked as a curriculum specialist and principal at Mountain View and Grandview Elementary schools before turning her attention to family matters and nonprofit work in retirement.

During Trusler’s career in Weld RE-4, she was instrumental in the district passing bond measures in 2007 and 2016, as well as building schools to accommodate growth. She was succeeded by current Weld RE-4 superintendent Dan Seegmiller.

“I miss school district leadership, and that’s why I’m here today,” Trusler said.

later in the day Wednesday that the board would consider a resolution at its regular evening meeting to look at negotiations with Trusler for the long-term interim superintendent job through the end of the 2021-2022 school year.

Video of the regular board meeting is unavailable beyond the first 15 minutes. Wailes said later there might have been an issue with internet.

Roosevelt High School athletic director Jeff Neal resigned his position as of June 30, according to the agenda. Wailes said Neal will continue to coach the girls basketball team.

Wailes said Trusler is the only finalist being evaluated for the long-term interim role. He added two other finalists withdrew their applications after learning the district was “looking for an interim position.” Wailes did not indicate if the board had a salary or salary range set for the job.

“We will negotiate the salary and benefits package following the interviews,” Wailes wrote in another email.

The Weld RE-5J board terminated superintendent Leslie Arnold in May, despite Arnold receiving a renewed contract in March and earning strong grades on evaluations from board members as recently as the 2020-21 school year.

Arnold joined the district in July 2018. She received $181,581.61 in gross pay following the contract in place at the time of the termination, according to information from the district obtained through an open records request.

“We’re focused on our kids. I can’t change what has happened in the past. We can move forward.”

Trusler said it’s also “significant” that up to three seats could be opening on the board of education later this year. Vice president Peggy Wakeman is term-limited as she ends her second term, and Wailes and secretary Sara Hall are up for reelection.

Centennial BOCES Executive Director Randy Zila, a former Colorado school district superintendent of the year, was named the short-term interim superintendent in early June. The board’s intent was for Zila to work as the district superintendent until it identified an interim for the upcoming school year.

Neither Wailes nor Arnold has offered a firm reason for the dismissal.

Arnold and human resources administrator Cara Anderson were the subject of complaints made by former Roosevelt High School principal Brian Littlefield in the spring. Littlefield faced allegations of inappropriate behavior and inappropriate responses to a variety of issues during the previous school year.

He is no longer with the district. His contract expired, and he was not offered a contract for the upcoming school year, according to district records.

When Trusler was asked by Wailes what she sees as her biggest challenge if selected as the long-term interim superintendent, Trusler mentioned the COVID-19 pandemic and the community and staff’s “challenging spring time.”

Trusler added she anticipates the district community will want to know about her and how she can best serve as superintendent.

From there, Trusler said her focus will be moving ahead with board-established goals.

“I need to make sure I am listening, I am acknowledging and I am helping to make the community. … and involving kids, staff, parents know that we’re all on the same page,” Trusler said.

Prior to naming Zila as the short-term superintendent, the RE-5J board approved a guaranteed two-year contract worth $12,500 for the Omaha, Nebraska-based executive recruitment and development firm of McPherson & Jacobson to help the district identify an interim and permanent superintendent.

Zila is a member of a Colorado search team with McPherson & Jacobson. The firm partners with the Colorado Association of School Boards to help districts identify and recruit superintendent candidates.

Wailes said on Thursday that the district contract with Zila for six weeks of work as the short-term interim superintendent is for $1.

Trusler told the board her first professional experience after receiving her teaching degree was working as a substitute Spanish teacher at Milliken Middle School.

“I am grateful for the teachers who took me under their wing and told me, ‘No, you need to do this, and here’s how we can help you,’” she said. “Even with helping me get ready for an interview.”

In response to a question from Wailes, the first of the afternoon, Trusler identified the proudest moments in her career.

As a superintendent, Trusler cited the teamwork in the Weld RE-4 district working with the board of education to pass a bond measure and “to support what principals and teachers needed” for the fast-growing district.

Over in Greeley Greeley is just a hop, skip and a jump from Windsor, and if you’ve never gone that far east (admit it, there are some of you out there who have not), here are two good reasons why now is the time: • Get dressed as your favorite monster (or not) and head over to downtown Greeley from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday, August 21, for an afternoon full of music, art, food and entertainment that is all part of Monster Day. Distortions Unlimited, Greeley’s own monster makers, will have some of their monstrous creations on display and costumed monsters will roam the plazas. MEET NOCO’S NEWEST PRO SPORTS TEAM: NORTHERN COLORADO HAILSTORM FC

orthern Colorado’s new professional soccer team now has a name: Northern Colorado Hailstorm FC.

Leadership for the team, which will join the Northern Colorado Owlz Pioneer League professional baseball team in playing at the Future Legends Sports Complex being built in Windsor, unveiled the name and branding Tuesday.

The Hailstorm crest was developed by soccer brand designer Christopher Payne, the team said. Team colors are navy, tan, gray and white.

Hailstorm will play in the USL League One as an expansion team.

“It’s a very exciting day for the Northern Colorado soccer community,” said USL president Jake Edwards.

“Now that Northern Colorado Hailstorm FC has a name and a visual identity, the community can really start to get excited about their team and how it continues to take shape in preparation for its first season in 2022.”

Future Legends developers have their work cut out for them to get the facility completed before the 2022 season.

Construction at the 118-acre site at 801 Diamond Valley Drive, which will include youth fields and a hotel, was stalled for the past eight months after the U.S. Department of Agriculture informed the developer that a portion of the Consolidated Law Ditch may have been diverted onto the Future Legends site in the 1950s or 1960s, Californiabased developer and Future Legends founder Jeff Katofsky told BizWest last month.

Katofky said the agency pulled its stop-work order in May after determining that the project will not impact any historical sites and the developer is ramping back up to resume construction.
