Here are a few cleaning hacks to help ensure a smooth and easy process.

De-Clutter First Reducing clutter in your home means fewer objects to launder, dust and wipe down, and should be the first step of your spring clean. Start with dressers and closets. DOWNTOWN WINDSOR ADDS PECULIER ALES TO ITS CRAFT BREWERY ARSENAL

W

indsor may soon be giving Greeley a run for its money when it comes to the number of craft breweries located within its borders.

Peculier Ales, which opened in the summer of 2020, is the first craft beer establishment located in downtown Windsor.

The establishment joins fellow Windsor breweries High Hops Brewery, Mighty River Brewing Company, Mash Lab Brewing and Lonesome Buck Smokehouse and Taproom.

Peculier Ales founder Nick Armitage considered spaces in Greeley, Fort Collins and Loveland, and even considered building a brewery in Water Valley before signing on the dotted line for the space at the Old Windsor Mill, 301 Main St., Unit A. “A friend of a friend asked if I had looked at the Windsor Mill and I told him that I was sure they had somebody because they really wanted a brewery in here. He was like ‘no, no give them a call’,” Armitage said. “So I gave them a call, came and looked at it, called my partner and we signed a lease a couple of weeks after.”

The brewery experienced a few minimal delays in construction due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Some things were stuck in customs for a month. Even things that were overnighted were stuck in customs for a month,” he said, laughing. “It’s been a roller coaster.”

And like many breweries around the country, the shutdown of inperson services and dining caused Armitage and his crew to switch gears and turn to distribution.

“We now push probably 50% of our product to liquor stores in cans for distribution,” Armitage explained. “Which we did not plan on and wasn’t in our model. But we were fortunate enough to have a canning line so we were able to quickly pivot and get it out there.”

The name, Peculier Ales, has an interesting backstory and not one you’d connect to the brewery.

According to Armitage, in England the word peculier is associated with a church or parish that set itself apart from the Church of England.

“My family comes from England and there is a town called Armitage. A couple of hours away there is a church called St. Mary’s and it is a peculier,” he said. “They were little community churches that just did their own thing. There is also a very famous beer in England called The Old Peculier.

“I love England and having that family tie to that area, I’ve had Peculier Ales in my pocket for like 12 years.”

The lettering and logo is also steeped in English history.

The brand opted to use Blackletter font, which is the style that monks used in transcribing manuscripts onto parchment paper.

“The flower on the logo is from the stained-glass window at the entrance of St. Mary’s. Our graphic designer guy modified it,”Armitage said. “We had a great team that worked on our branding and it was a lot of fun.”

The brewery offers a variety of beers including IPAs, stouts, ales, lagers and hard seltzers as well as soda.

“We are not afraid to brew anything. We will brew almost any style but we like to do a lot of our own twists and turns on it,” Armitage said. “But at the same time, we do a lot of classics. Our motto is ‘beer set apart’ because a peculiar is a church set apart.”

Customers can expect to find anything from a classic pilsner and heavily fruited sours to hazy IPAs and West Coast IPAs.

“We do fun crazy things,” he said. “We are not committed to brewing only a certain style. I get too bored to do that and I like to experiment.”

Armitage got into the brewing business after experimenting at home and then taking jobs with Crabtree Brewing, New Belgium Brewing, WeldWerks Brewing and Lonesome Buck Brewing.

Armitage is currently working to get a kitchen up and running to be able to offer patrons food options, however, customers are welcome to bring in their own food or have it delivered.

“I was fortunate enough to be the Number 2 employee at WeldWerks before I got headhunted to help start a brew pub,” Armitage said. “I got approached by somebody to start a different project and I thought if I am doing all this work for somebody else, why not just do it for myself. And that’s how this got started.”

The brewery hosts different food trucks in the back parking area Thursday through Saturday.

In addition to food and drinks, the brewery is working on creating a lineup of live entertainment from musicians and comedians for people to come out and enjoy.

Currently, Tuesday nights feature performances from singer/ songwriters performing with every other Thursday set for comedians to come out and share their acts. Depending on COVID-19 restrictions, Armitage is hoping to start offering outdoor performances beginning Memorial Day weekend.

“We are working on some really fun options to utilize this space as much as possible this year and beyond,” Armitage said. “We have a lot of fun things planned for this summer.”

With its high ceilings, open floor concept, roll up bay doors and ample indoor and outdoor seating, customers can spread out and enjoy one of the brewery’s custom beers safely.

What more can you do to live a greener lifestyle at home and outdoors?

At Home “Every year, homeowners spend millions of dollars on heating, cooling and lighting their homes,” said Sam Taggart, strategic marketing director for PVREA. Switching to smart home technology, electric appliances, clean energy sources and energy-efficient heating and cooling systems can make a difference for the environment and even your pocketbook.

Where to start? Taggart offered the following home energy-saving tips: Turning down your thermostat by 10 to 15 percent for eight hours a day can lower your annual heating bills by up to 10 percent. A programmed smart thermostat makes this a no-brainer.

Ready for a new oven or cooktop? Consider an electric range with induction heating. If you prefer gas ovens, select one with an electric ignition, which will use 40 percent less energy than a standard pilot light.

Consider replacing your fireplace heating system with one that allows you to efficiently heat individual living spaces that you and your family spend the most time in, reducing your furnace's output of hot air into empty and unused spaces.

Set your water heater to 130 degrees instead of the standard 140 degrees. You can also increase your water heater's efficiency by draining and cleaning it every six months to remove lime deposits and sediment. If your water heater is gas, consider an electric water heater that doesn’t use a pilot light.

Make the switch to solar, but before you do, make your home more energy efficient by adding insulation, sealing air leaks, and completing other basic fix-it projects. You’ll cut energy costs immediately and reduce the size of the solar system you purchase.

Consider subscribing to renewable energy provided from wind, solar and small-scale hydroelectric sources. Many utilities, including PVREA, allow customers to support these programs from their bills.

A phone app makes it even easier to control the controller. If a problem pops up, with a few clicks a zone or the entire system can be shut off eliminating gallons of water going down the street.

Smart controllers, Haas added, “gives homeowners a lot of empowerment. It’s like a smart thermostat for your house. If we stay in the dark ages, we won’t save any water.”

Outdoors When it comes to our yards, green still reigns supreme. And that means irrigation systems, drip systems and sprinklers at the end of hoses going all summer long.

“Nationally, irrigation waste accounts for up to a staggering 1.5 billion gallons of water a day,” said Matt Haas, franchise owner of Conserva Irrigation in Fort Collins. “It uses more water than every single indoor water appliance combined.”

For example, a seven-zone irrigation system uses about 2,500 gallons of water every time it runs, he said, but nearly half of that water is wasted due to improperly programmed sprinkler controllers and insufficient irrigation systems.

“All it takes is one broken sprinkler to waste thousands of gallons of water over the course of a summer,” Haas said.

This is not an optimal scenario for a region struggling to get out of long-term draught.

What can you do to conserve water over the summer?

Hass suggests: • Water at night.

• Water only when plants need moisture.

• Use a rain sensor so that sprinklers don’t run if it’s raining.

• Get an audit of your irrigation system in spring to fix problems before they become bigger issues later on.

Of those four tips, the most important thing homeowners can do is get an audit of their irrigation system, Haas said.

Doing so can uncover issues such as leaky nozzles, leaky seals and even improper spacing of sprinkler heads.

Without an audit, the only way you might find out you have a problem with your irrigation system is when your water bill is twice or more than normal for the month.

cademically, Windsor Charter Academy has wasted no time racking up accolades and prestige during its relatively brief, but eventful, history.

But why just excel in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, when you can also excel in scoring goals, draining jump shots, serving up aces and racing past finish lines?

WCA opened its doors in 2001 and has continuously expanded over the past two decades, adding a high school in 2015.

Upon expanding its scope to the high school level, WCA began developing high school athletic programs after already having middle school athletics.

Though academics will continue to be the top priority for the 1,500-student kindergarten12th grade STEM school — at 680 Academy Court and 810 Automation Drive in Windsor — the school has taken significant leaps in recent years in athletics, developing budding high school sports programs.

The academy even has an eye on becoming a Colorado High School Activities Association member, as primarily a 3A program, in fall 2022.

“We’ve seen more student participation,” WCA’s dean of students and high school athletic director Lindsay Yost said. “With that, the outcome of having more athletic opportunities for the kids will elevate the whole child, in terms of what WCA can offer.”

volleyball, boys and girls soccer, boys and girls basketball and coed cheer. They also offer track and field at the middle school level.

The school plans to add boys volleyball next school year. And, in the next couple years, WCA also has designs on adding high school track and field, with plans to work with either Severance or Windsor high school to use their facilities. The academy also hopes to add golf teams in the next few years.

Windsor Charter previously sought CHSAA membership in 2017.

Sarah Drips was with WCA when it first launched high school athletics nearly six years ago. She coaches girls soccer at the school — the only high school girls soccer coach the Firebirds have had in their brief history.

As one of the school’s longest tenured coaches, she’s seen the athletic programs at WCA rise up in all areas, from structure and organization to in-game competitiveness.

“Every single year has gotten progressively better,” said Drips, who is also an art teacher at WCA. “I see how much positivity our students get from athletics. I’m excited to see that attitude continue to be dispersed among more sports and more teams — J.Vs and varsity and C-teams.”

The school currently has a soccer field, as well as an indoor gymnasium. But, its

athletic facilities could soon receive a major facelift if a Weld RE-4 School District bond measure is passed in November. With plans to break ground in February, the proposed two-floor “Firebird Facility” would add a new gymnasium, weight room, indoor track, practice rooms, classrooms and student commons.

“The bond measure is an extremely important thing for WCA as a whole, not just athletics,” said Keith Dellapina, who took over the Firebirds boys basketball program this season after coaching the girls team last season.

“But, obviously, from an athletic perspective, it will allow WCA to move in to the next step in the evolution of its athletic programs. And, it will allow WCA, as a facility, to compete and provide the best we can for our studentathletes.”

Yost said the school hopes to have the facility completed by fall 2023. In the interim, the school plans to partner with the nearby Future Legends Complex — a vast sports park currently being constructed in Windsor.

On Feb. 18, CHSAA’s Classification and League Organizing Committee gave initial approval for WCA’s CHSAA membership.

However, nothing will be set in stone until CHSAA’s Legislative Council votes on the academy’s membership during its spring meeting in May.

“WCA is first and foremost a STEM school and is really dedicated

and

committed to the academic side,” of the administration at WCA have done everything necessary to assure a favorable vote in May. “I don’t have any hesitation that we’re not going to get a vote at the Legislative Council meeting,” said Yost, who has a Master’s Degree in sports administration from the University of Northern Colorado and a Master’s in educational leadership from Regis University.

“One of the main hurdles in terms of getting accepted previously was the size of our gym.

But, it helps that we have plans to build the

new Firebird Facility, and, in the interim, we are fortunate enough to be right next door to the new Future Legends Complex.”

Even beyond just the prospects of becoming a CHSAA member, athletics at WCA appear to have a bright future.

Dellapina said in just the couple years he’s coached at the school, he’s seen the high school athletic department really begin to find its footing.

And, that growth and development doesn’t appear to be slowing any time soon for the hundreds of students competing in Firebirds athletics and the staff of coaches and administrators leading the charge.

“WCA is first and foremost a STEM school and is really dedicated and committed to the academic side,” Dellapina said. “But, what I think our coaching staff and the athletic department is doing, in general, is really moving our athletics forward. And, that really is how we get exposure in many, many ways. “… I think we are absolutely positioned well going into the future. There is some excitement growing around athletics at WCA.”

Up to this point, WCA has competed in high school athletics under a non-profit, independent governing association — the Front Range Christian Athletic Association.

If it does, in fact, earn CHSAA membership, WCA will belong to a newly formed league — the 3A/2A Foothills League — and its teams and athletes will have the opportunity to compete in CHSAA-sanctioned events and contend for state titles.

In order to be in compliance with CHSAA, and position itself for a CHSAA membership, WCA had to complete numerous tasks — including creating schedules at least 50% composed of CHSAA members the past couple years, and finding a league, or in this case, helping create a league, with other CHSAA members.

Stefani Harris, owner and organizer of Miss Labeled Organizing based in Windsor, says the cleaning portion of Spring cleaning is important, but it’s just the start.

“I help people learn to stay organized in the long run so they don’t have to use so much of their valuable time cleaning or decluttering,” Harris says. “If you use five minutes looking for your keys every day that becomes 30 hours every year.”

U.S. DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION APPROVES COLORADO’S PLAN FOR STATE ASSESSMENT TESTS Feds mandate districts administer science tests to 8th graders

T

he U.S. Department of Education conditionally approved Colorado’s plan for state assessment tests to proceed this spring for students in third through 11th grades, the Colorado Department of Education announced Friday.

The CDE said in a news release the federal agency granted the approval for modifications to the Colorado Measures of Academic Success, or CMAS, assessments based on the “unique circumstances Colorado schools and school districts are facing as a result of the pandemic,” according to a news released from the state education department.

This plan for assessments for this year only will provide some relief for students, families, and educators after a challenging year for education amid a 24 | mywindsor | APRIL 2021

global pandemic.

Under the plan approved by the federal department, Colorado schools and districts will be required to administer:

CMAS assessments in English language arts to all students in third, fifth and seventh grades.

CMAS math assessments must be administered to all students in fourth, sixth and eighth grades.

The federal office did not approve the state’s request to suspend all science tests this year, so schools and districts must administer science tests to students in eighth grade.

CMAS science will not be given to students in fifth and 11th grades, as they normally would, but CDE must publicly report the SAT Analysis in Science subscore this year. Social studies tests, which are required only in state law, will not be given this year.

The federal approval earned praise from Colorado’s largest union, the Colorado Education Association.

“Educators across Colorado are pleased that the U.S. Department of Education recognized that full-scale standardized testing this year would be not only completely unnecessary, but also harmful to students struggling to survive the COVID-19 pandemic,” said CEA President Amie Baca-Oehlert in a statement from the organization.

Parents and caregivers who want to know how their children are progressing in both English language arts and math may have their children take both tests.

School districts and schools should notify parents and caregivers about how students may take assessments in both subject areas.

“Colorado legislators and education stakeholders came up with a solid plan, based on our unique circumstances and

challenges related to the pandemic, to cut back on state assessments this spring to acknowledge how schools have had to adapt during the pandemic, and I appreciate the flexibility and collaboration we have received from the U.S. Department of Education,” Colorado Department of Education Commissioner Katy Anthes said in the news release. “Now we need schools, families and students to join us in our efforts to understand how much the pandemic has impacted learning across our state by having students participate in the required CMAS tests, so we can target our federal and state resources toward students who need the most support.”

The reduced assessment requirements were requested following the approval of House Bill 21-1161, which brought together a broad contingent of legislators, education associations, school districts, and the Colorado Department of Education to find a solution aimed to reduce testing requirements because of the global pandemic.

This year has created unprecedented challenges for students and educators, and this announcement provides some relief as the 202021 school year comes to a close.

“In the spirit of collaboration, Colorado educators, school districts, advocacy organizations, legislators, and the department of education came together to create a solution that serves students, and provides some relief after a challenging academic year,” Governor Jared Polis said in the CDE release.

Additionally, the department is preparing a waiver request to pause federal accountability requirements for another year. The department anticipates submitting the accountability waiver in early April.

ROADWAY IMPROVEMENTS SCHEDULED FOR SMALL STRETCH OF COLO. 257 IN WINDSOR

A

small stretch of Colo. 257 in Windsor, just north of Main Street, is scheduled to undergo roadway improvements as early as next week.

The improvements are planned for North 7th Street, also known as Colo.

257, between Main Street, or Colo. 392, and Birch Street. Work may begin as early as Monday, weather permitting, and is expected to be finished by early June, according to a Windsor news release.

Traffic impacts are expected to be minimal, but drivers are asked to take alternate routes where possible The first phase involves concrete replacement of curbs, gutters, sidewalk 26 | mywindsor | APRIL 2021

and stormwater pans along Colo. 257, between Main and Ash streets. Sidewalk ramp adjustments in a few locations are also planned, to improve accessibility. The deteriorating alley directly north of 628 Main St., will also be reconstructed.

In the second phase, crews will install a pedestrian crossing at Birch Street and Colo. 257, with the goal of improving cyclist and pedestrian safety. Town engineers chose the location due to its lower speed limit, shorter crossing distance and proximity to Boardwalk Park.

The third phase, to be completed by the Colorado Department of Transportation, is scheduled for late May to early June.

CDOT will complete an asphalt overlay between Colo. 392 just south of Birch Street. The overlay will improve road safety and provide a better experience for cars and cyclists.

Todd Vess, spokesman for Windsor Severance Fire Rescue, said the department ’s nearby station won’t experience any impacts from the first phase and that plans are in the works for any potential impacts later in the project.

Vess said crews can exit out the west side of the station, with an access drive on the south side of the station, avoiding Colo.

257 in the event of closures.

Waterline maintenance is also planned during the first two phases, as a coordinated effort to improve utility access near the intersection of Main Street and Colo. 257. Waterline maintenance is planned for overnight work, starting after evening rush hour.

During construction, bike lanes will be closed. Drivers are reminded to use caution when traveling in a work zone.

Ascent Classical Academy of Northern Colorado opened this past fall using facilities in Clearwater Church on South Lemay Avenue in Fort Collins.

Starting in late summer, the school will move to a 40,000-square foot building on 14 acres at 6402 S. Weld County Road 5, to the north of Colo. 392.

The school, a tuition-free public charter with a curriculum based on a liberal arts education, currently has about 250 students in kindergarten through sixth grades.

With the opening of the new building in the fall, Ascent will expand to grades K-9 for about 500 students and a grade each year until it reaches K-12 for up to about 1,000 students.

Windsor resident Autumn Leopold’s 12-year-old son, Sam, is a sixth grader at Ascent Classical.

Leopold said they moved Sam to Ascent this year because the boy needs the structure the school offers, with one 6 | mywindsor | APRIL 2021

benefit being student uniforms. Sam also has Tourette’s syndrome, and the family feels comfortable with Ascent’s student services.

“They’re held to a higher standard,” Leopold said of Ascent students. “It’s like a spiral. Every class is foundation for the next level. The curriculum builds on itself.”

The Ascent northern Colorado academy is the latest classical charter public to be affiliated with the Barney Charter School Initiative, which is an outreach of Hillsdale College. The northern Colorado campus joins two other campuses in the Ascent Classical Academy model: Golden View Classical Academy in Golden, which was the first about six years ago, and Ascent Classical Academy of Douglas County in Lonetree.

Kim Gilmartin, the director of new school development for Ascent Classical Academies, said the classical academy model, in addition to having a liberal arts base, calls into play three pillars of education: the grammar stage, the logic phase and rhetoric stage.

Students’ work and curriculum builds off these depending on their level in school. Gilmartin described the classical academy model as “teacher-led learning.”

“You see kids at desks, facing the teachers,” Gilmartin said. “No computers or devices. It’s the teacher teaching the curriculum. It’s a direct-instruction model.”

Ascent Classical Academy is authorized by the Colorado Charter School Institute, which is a statewide charter school authorizer with a mission to “foster highquality public school options that meet the needs of all students,” according to its website. CSI oversees schools throughout the state.

In Colorado, charter schools can be authorized by its host school district or CSI, which is the only statewide authorizer. The CSI website says charter schools are accountable to the authorizer for meeting local, state and federal requirements. The authorizer is approved by the state legislature to open new charter schools, to monitor the performance of existing charter schools and to close failing schools.

Gilmartin said it was always the plan for ACA to build a school from the ground up. It was also the intent of school officials to have a permanent building as close to Windsor as possible to take advantage of a growth area.

‘Tis The Season For Bathing And Grooming

W

hether you’re the kind to dive head first into springcleaning or prefer to just tidy up a few seasonal items, there might be one thing you’ve overlooked – your pets.

It’s time for some spring pet grooming. Yes, some dogs require consistent grooming and are likely already on a schedule, but for many other pups and cats, now is the perfect time for a trip to the groomer.

“We call it spring shave season!” said Erin Parker, owner of Hot Rod Dog. “Everybody waits it out during the winter and grows out fur to keep animals warm, and now we start to take it down shorter.”

But it’s not just those in need of a trim that can benefit from a date with the salon. Many dogs with double or triple coats start to shed this time of year, and a grooming session helps keep them healthy.

“All that undercoat comes out and they start shedding all over the place,” Parker said. “You want to get that undercoat brushed out. Otherwise, especially with the longer fur, it can start to mat up and then the coat is uncomfortable and hot for the animal.”

Even before making an appointment with a groomer, it helps to do some work

at home, explained Dames Benally, groomer at J&T Feeds.

“If your dog likes the brush already, it makes our job so much easier here,” Benally said. “All dogs need to be brushed. And getting your dog on a regular schedule is good.”

Nail care is also important. As spring and summer approach, more pet owners get out more often for walks, which can naturally file down nails, as opposed to winter when more pets are indoors with less opportunity. Still, many pets – including those of a more exotic variety – need regular nail trims regardless.

Hot Rod Dog offers walk-in nail trims to make it easy, and J&T Feeds donates proceeds from nail trims back to local animal rescues and shelters, noting how important nail hygiene is.

“It’s crucial on any animal,” Benally said. “It reflects the overall health of a dog and being comfortable in general, so we make it really affordable.”

There’s the Tune Up package for a bath and brush, the Overhaul package, which includes nail trim, ear cleaning and anal glands, and the Restoration package which also includes a full-body haircut.

But maybe you’re looking for something different and fun? Hot Rod Dog has that too. Similar to the popular human salon trend, some pet owners are getting their dog’s hair dyed in colors or even patterns.

“It’s a permanent dye, so it lasts for a while, but it’s all made for animals. It’s definitely not human hair dye, which would ruin their skin,” Parker said. “We do a lot of custom details. People like to have fun.”

Another great perk available at both Hot Rod Dog and J&T Feeds is a self-service dog wash. At J&T, the self-service wash is open in the later afternoons after Benally leaves for the day, and all day Sunday,

“It’s a great option for people who in the summer might have gone to the lake, and they’ll bring the dog in for a bath before going home,” said Teri Segelke, owner of J&T. The self-service washes include everything a pet owner might need, including shampoo, ramps for larger dogs (the tub is at waist height so humans don’t have to bend over awkwardly to bathe their pets!), grooming brushes and blow dryer.

“Leave the mess here!” said Segelke.

“It’s so much easier.”
