our May graduates from Windsor and Severance high schools recently received scholarships from a women’s philanthropic organization dedicated to supporting women.

Megan Dodrill, a Windsor High School graduate, and Marjorie Acheson, who graduated from Windsor Charter Academy, were awarded $2,500 STAR Scholarships from P.E.O.International.

Windsor High School graduate Grace Ramsey earned an annual $1,000 Chapter Scholarship in memory of MerylTozer from Chapter U P.E.O.,the older of the two P.E.O.chapters in Windsor.Severance High School graduate Anna Crownhart received the Marge Reizer Arts Memorial Scholarship.

P.E.O.International was founded in 1869 by seven students at Iowa Wesleyan College in Mount Pleasant,Iowa.The organization celebrates the advancement of women,it educates women through scholarships, grants, awards, loans and stewardship of Cottey College in Missouri, and it motivates women to achieve their highest aspirations,according to the International P.E.O. website. P.E.O. stands for philanthropic educational organization.

The P.E.O.STAR Scholarship is for women who exhibit excellence in leadership,academics,extracurricular activities,community service and potential for future success,according to information from the Windsor chapters.The scholarship was established in 2009 for exceptional women in their final year of high school to attend an accredited postsecondary educational institution in the U.S.or Canada in the following academic year.

Acheson graduated from both Windsor Charter and Aims Community College in May. Acheson had a 3.97 GPA at Windsor Charter Academy.She was active in theVex Robotics team and National Honor Society.She helped establish the Gender Sexuality Alliance and she was a peer counselor.She plans to study computer science in college.

Ramsey ranked 24th in her class at Windsor High with a grade point average of 4.125. She was a member of the National Honor Society, softball, track, golf and basketball teams, and she was president of the Windsor FFA Chapter.She plans to study biology and premed at Bay Path University in Longmeadow,Massachusetts.

Crownhart was a member of the volleyball,tennis and cross country teams at Severance. She was also a member of the Family Career and Community Leaders of America, National Honor Society, student council,art club and orchestra.Crownhart will attend Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Georgia to study fashion design with a minor in design for sustainability.

The kiosk, which provides PCR tests for COVID-19, can process up to 500 tests per day and is scheduled to open Saturday, Nov. 7 from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m., according to San Antonio-based Curative staff member Pizano. CURATIVE OPENS COVID-19 TESTING SITE IN WINDSOR

BY MORGAN MCKENZIE COVID-19 testing site has opened in Windsor A new amid rising positivity rates in Weld County.

100,00 residents is at 201.9 with 664 new cases reported in the last week, according to Weld County COVID-19 data.

The site, operated by Curative, is open 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. weekdays at Eastman Park. The location offers PCR and antigen testing.

The county’s one-week average positive test rate is 12.11% up from 10% two weeks ago — a significant spike since the positive test rate of 4.92% in the second to last week in April.

Insurance is required, but there is also a self-pay option available at the site for those who would like to be tested without insurance. A lab-based PCR cost $99 for patients who opt for self-pay, while there is no cost to the insured patients.

In January 2021, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration released an alert about the risk of false results, particularly negative, with the Curative SARS-Cov-2 test. Curative testing sites have since halted the use of the tests.

If the patient does the self-pay, the cost for the Lab-based PCR is $99. If they have insurance, there is no cost to the patient as we will bill the insurance.

10 GREAT SUMMIT HIKES

There are few moments in life as lovely as standing atop a mountain you conquered with your own two feet, alone and in awe of the quiet solitude one can find high in the Rocky Mountains.

I

f your summer hobby is climbing the fourteeners (peaks that rise above 14,000 feet), such solitude can be surprisingly elusive. More than 500,000 people a year hike one of these 54 mountains, and climbing some peaks, especially near the Front Range, can seem more like a conga line than a wilderness experience. But lower your elevation standards a bit and you may experience a peace and quiet that’s becoming more rare on the fourteeners.Colorado has more than 600 thirteeners, many just as challenging and beautiful as the higher peaks.

We’ve put together a list of 10 peaks that are worthy of a visit, from gentle strolls off a paved mountain pass to rugged backcountry adventures, arranged in order of difficulty. Keep in mind that the same safety guidelines apply for fourteeners: Get an early start to avoid afternoon thunderstorms.Bring more water and food than you think you’ll need. Be prepared for any weather. Have a map. And, of course, don’t forget a camera.

MOUNT SNIKTAU

13,240 feet, White River National Forest

DISTANCE: 4 miles ELEVATION GAIN: 1,580 feet This peak is so accessible that many people climb it in winter. You can drive to nearly 12,000 feet on Loveland Pass, and from there it’s a simple ridgeline stroll up the north side of the pass. Off in the distance you’ll see fourteeners Grays and Torreys, where hordes of hikers are likely swarming the trails. You just may have Sniktau’s summit to yourself.

DISTANCE: 2.6 miles ELEVATION GAIN: 2,000 feet Cottonwood Pass west of Buena Vista pierces the alpine tundra of the Collegiate Peaks at 12,126 feet.

This knob of a mountain is a short but occasionally steep hike away. The majesty of the Collegiates spread out in all directions is worth every step.

walk up a rough road past old mining buildings, then a steep ascent to the top of the range. One can summit all three peaks in this range, but resist the urge to try to make it a loop hike because there is no safe way down.

connects Breckenridge with South Park, offering endless opportunities for hikes along the tundra. Reaching this summit entails a walk up an old mining road followed by a pleasant tundra stroll. Like the name suggests, you won’t find many trees.

BALDY CINCO

PARRY PEAK

DISTANCE: 7 miles

DISTANCE: 5.5 miles

ELEVATION GAIN: 2,485 feet

ELEVATION GAIN: 2,800 feet

The La Garita Range is one of Colorado’s lesser-visited, with only one fourteener, but that means many opportunities for solitude. This huge hump of a mountain is located just off Spring Creek Pass between Lake City and Creede. Starting at the top of the pass, it’s a steep ascent along the Colorado Trail. After emerging above timberline, simply stroll across the vast tundra to the summit spire.

This peak is an easy day trip from Denver. It’s one of the high peaks you see in the distance from Interstate 70 as you head west out of the city. It’s also highly visible while skiing Winter Park.The way is occasionally steep and mostly offtrail, starting at Fall River Reservoir. On a clear day you may see the downtown skyscrapers, but you’ll feel a world away.

WEST SPANISH PEAK DISTANCE: 8 miles

ELEVATION GAIN: 2,600 feet The Spanish Peaks are so prominent an entire region of southern Colorado

is named for them. Though higher than its neighbor East Spanish Peak, West Spanish Peak is easier to summit, as you can drive high on the mountain via Cordova Pass. Starting at a campground across the dirt road, it’s a modest hike at first but soon becomes steep as you follow rock cairns up the side of the talus heap. From the top, the Sangre de Cristo Mountains dominate the view in all their glory.

SPREAD EAGLE PEAK

13,423 feet, San Isabel National Forest

DISTANCE: 14 miles ELEVATION GAIN: 4,000 feet The Sangre de Cristo Wilderness has more stunning lakes per square mile than any other in Colorado, and this hike will take you to three of the most amazing, the Lakes of the Clouds.

Starting at the Gibson Creek trailhead near Westcliffe, it’s a short but steep ascent up the Swift Creek Trail to the lakes. Spread Eagle towers above to the south. You can hike it in a day, but most set up a backcountry camp and climb the next day.Why not spend some time amid the beauty?

DISTANCE: 16 miles ELEVATION GAIN: 4,885 feet The Mummy Range, known for long, gentle peaks, is one of the lesser-visited areas of Rocky Mountain National Park.That’s because it’s a slog to reach, and these peaks are most easily climbed after spending the night at one of the backcountry campsites near Lawn Lake (reservations required). This quiet area might not have the dramatic appeal of Longs Peak or Trail Ridge Road, but visit and you’ll find a new way to look at this busy park.

CATHEDRAL PEAK

13,943 feet, White River National Forest

DISTANCE: 9 miles ELEVATION GAIN: 3,900 feet This jagged,imposing peak near Aspen gets the “most difficult”spot on this list not for mileage, but a hand-over-hand ascent of a steep couloir. The rock is so loose many hikers prefer to climb it when snow still fills the route. Whatever season you hike, an ice axe and helmet are a good idea.The climb will take your breath away and the view of the Elk Mountains and Maroon Bells from the summit will drop your jaw.

NEW COLORADO TRUMARK DIVISION PLANTS FLAG IN WINDSOR

O

n the back of a recently formed Colorado division, California homebuilder Trumark Cos. LLC is continuing its first push onto the Front Range residential development scene with a new neighborhood in Windsor’s RainDance planned community.

Locally, the San Ramon-based builder, which began buying land in RainDace last year, has to-date acquired 226 finished lots.

RainDance is being overseen by local developer Martin Lind’s Water Valley Land Co. LLC and Trumark’s holdings include property along the perimeter of Lind’s soon-tocompleted RainDance National Golf Course.

The company’s Windsor offerings include single-family, for-sale, market-rate homes that range from roughly 2,000 square feet to more than 4,000 square feet. Prices are expected to be from about $800,000 to more than $2 million.

The homebuilder’s Colorado operation, which is fewer than two years old, is led by president Scott Davis, a long-time 16 | mywindsor | JULY 2022

Centennial State builder previously with D.R. Horton Inc. Davis recalled to BizWest a 2021 meeting with Trumark founders Gregg Nelson and Michael Maples.

“They happened to be wanting to launch their first division out of state,” Davis said, and “we just happened to meet and hit it off.”

The Trumark Colorado team has been rostered with local real estate professionals, including director of operations Tyler Steinke.

With a local team, “we feel like we have our ear to the ground on what’s important to vendors, how we can be more efficient, time, money, scope of work,” Davis said.

This insight is particularly important because Trumark is setting an ambitious six-month construction schedule for its RainDance homes.

“A brand-new operation would struggle” to build on an accelerated schedule and in an economic climate rife

“It’s easier to talk about what bad builders are doing,” he said. “… You hear things that you read in the press that everything’s chaotic — it’s really not.”

That’s a bold statement considering that Davis said Trumark is negotiating final prices for new homes on the front of the construction process.

The speedy build-out timeline helps mitigate risk by allowing the developer to more effectively lock in prices, which have tended to escalate since the COVID-19 pandemic began.

“It’s hard to be predictable today,” Davis said. “We’ve preordered some things, and we’ve pre-permitted so we don’t delay the homes.”

with inflation and supply-chain disruptions, Davis said.

“Relationships are important — and trust.”

While the Trumark team projects confidence, Davis acknowledged that there are challenges in the Northern Colorado real estate market.

This strategy limits flexibility on certain construction elements but helps “offset[s] some of the delays” that frequently take bites from developers’ bottom lines, he said.

Again, Davis points to the Trumark Colorado team’s experience in the market as a factor that hopefully will allow for maximum efficiency.

Access to water rights is “a big issue” generally, he said, but the lots Trumark purchased from Water Valley include water.

“If you started from scratch and you’re waiting on the bank to loan you money to buy four lots here and 10 lots there, it would take a long time,” he said.

That will likely not be the case if and when Trumark expands its regional footprint. Still, Davis said the division is set up for success.

Ah, summer. Extra hours of sunlight and warm temperatures bring a renewed energy to get out and explore. If you’re feeling like a lot of us are this summer — a bit more adventurous after two years of curtailed outings — you may be resolved to hit up local gems on as many weekends as you can.

We applaud yoou.

So much so, in fact, we’ve compiled a list of some of our favorite Front Range day hikes.They’re all close enough that you can get out, hike and get back home in time to make or grab dinner. Each is special in its own ways — and we’ve noted a few reasons why we like each trail.

Note: We’ve included the total mileage for each trail, start to finish.

However, many of these options are out-and-backs, leaving lots of wiggle room for shorter versions depending on how you and your hiking buddies are feeling on any given day.

EASY HIKE DINOSAUR RIDGE You may think of Red Rocks 20 | mywindsor | JULY 2022

After you witness the beautiful golden and red hues warm up the day, head to the Dinosaur Ridge trail. It’s a great hike to ease into the season — which is why it’s our trail season kickoff suggestion — with moderate enough terrain you can bring the whole family along.

4 miles Drive from Denver: 30 minutes Family friendly, dog friendly

HORSETOOTH RESERVOIR There are a few trails that lead to Horsetooth Reservoir near Fort Collins, but we recommend the familyfriendly ease of the Shoreline Trail. Its wildflower game is on point, and you can bring your dog if you keep it on

a leash. Besides hiking, you can also rent pad ddle board ds, and d Fort Colllins is a cool town to grab a bite to eat in before or after your outing. Or, pick up a ride from a shared bike service and go brewhouse hopping.

1.3 miles Drive from Denver: 75 minutes Family friendly, dog friendly

PAINT MINES INTERPRETIVE PARK Located near Calhan northeast of Colorado Springs, this route is heavily trafficked but is not nearly as popular as the Incline in Manitou Springs.

Although you can’t bring your pet, you can admire the amazing, colorful clays that Native Americans used as paint, and geological formations like spires and hoodoos that look their best at sunset or sunrise. Fun fact: It’s believed

MARY’S MOUNTAIN If you’re looking to escape urban or suburban life for the day, this trail is a must, even if you don’t hike the entire length. Located just outside the cute foothills town of Manitou Springs, this trail is a great way to see several of nature’s favorite attractions at once: beautiful wildflowers, mountain streams, interesting rock formations and aspen groves (with golden leaves in fall). You’ll start on Barr Trail, but once you leave this well-known route you’re unlikely to see other hikers. When you’re done, be sure to stop by the eclectic downtown to experience the arts and culture scene before heading home.

10.9 miles Drive from Denver: 75 minutes Dog friendly, wildflowers

SHELF LAKE Shelf Lake near Silver Plume is one of the best places to see glorious earlyseason flowers, but it is off the beaten path. If you don’t want to park before the road the trailhead is on and hike up (adding a few miles to your trip), you’ll need a high clearance four-wheel-drive vehicle or the confidence/connections to hitch a ride with someone who does.

The added challenge pays off though with beautiful views and a magical (albeit a little chilly) mountain lake at the end.

6.8 miles Drive from Denver: 90 minutes Dog friendly, great views, lake

HARDER HIKES MOUNT PARNASSUS VIA WATROUS GULCH This trail is a great way to get a 13er under your belt this summer. It treats you to insanely beautiful views of the Front Range, but the trade-off is a pretty challenging final mile. We suggest heading out early in the day to avoid

thunderstorms up high,and bring an extra layer for the cool winds at the top.An early morning start has its perks — you have the prime pick of parking in a nice big lot and time to enjoy some road-trip coffee before you embark on your trek.

6.7 miles Drive from Denver: 1 hour Dog friendly, great views

HERMAN GULCH Maybe one of the most gorgeous hikes that’s just an hour away from Denver, you’re guaranteed colorful

wildflower scenery any time between June and October, but usually peaking in July.

Although steep at times, the punishment doesn’t last long, and the break at the end by the lake will rejuvenate you in no time.

This is another hike where an early start is best (to avoid storms and traffic on I-70 as you drive toward Silver Plume), and you may want to take your trekking poles for the journey back to the car due to the steep descent.

7.2 miles Drive from Denver: 1 hour D og friendly, great views, lake

CHASM LAKE With a parking lot perched just outside of Rocky Mountain National Park, Chasm Lake makes a great, free ice rink in winter. Come summer, you’re treated

to lush tree cover for the first couple of miles, then a challenging yet satisfying scramble up to the lake. To take your mind off the ascent, look out for Peacock Pool and other small water features on the way up, and know that a stunning view of Longs Peak awaits. This is another hike that’s best to tackle early in the morning during summer to reduce the chance you’ll be caught in an afternoon thunderstorm (and to make it easier to find parking). Take a windbreaker no matter the forecast; the wind doesn’t mess around here.

9.4 miles Drive from Denver: 90 minutes Great views, lake

trail for easing into the season (Dinosaur Ridge). Think of the hike to Gore Lake as the celebratory fireworks to a season of hiking. Clocking in around six hours to complete, it’s tailored for the seasoned hiker. If you’re in it to win it, you can find picturesque Gore Lake at the end of this hike and maybe some mountain goats to share lunch with as well. If you don’t make it that far, no worries! You’re still privy to some beautiful scenery in the first few miles. Pro tip: Go on a weekday, or early, to avoid traffic on the trail.

ith a worldwide pandemic limiting our activities for the last two years, most of us are heading full throttle into our summer adventures. Whether that means soft adventure, aka “adrenaline-light,”such as biking a dirt road in the mountains, or adrenaline-extreme activities such as skydiving, here are some of the most dynamic excursions you can experience throughout Colorado.

Climb a via ferrata A what, you ask? “Via ferrata”is Italian for “iron way,”referring to mountain routes that gained notoriety when they were used in WWI to help troops traverse treacherous peaks in the Alps.

Today they’re popping up all over mountains in the U.S., allowing everyday adventurers who aren’t technical climbers to ascend rock walls while hooked into a system of fixed iron cables, steel steps, bridges and ladders.

Colorado boasts a wealth of via ferrata routes (at least nine, even at Royal Gorge and Cave of the Winds), including North America’s highest at Arapahoe Basin, which debuted in June 24 | mywindsor | JULY 2022

2021 and features 1,200 feet of climbing topping out at 13,000 feet.

The state’s newest route, the Cloud Ladder, which opened in Estes Park in July 2021 via Kent Mountain Adventure Center, is considered an advanced route with 625 feet of vertical climbing plus two 40-foot suspension bridges spanning a 300-foot-deep ravine. (Climbing and/or via ferrata experience is recommended on the route.)

Jump off a cliff

Adrenaline junkies willing to literally run off the edge of a mountain to tandem paraglide have plenty of opportunity throughout Colorado, from Telluride to the Front Range.

Honestly, of all the crazy things I’ve done in my life, paragliding

was one of the most calming. But let your guide know if you’re prone to motion sickness so they can minimize twists and turns.

Stay overnight in a mountain hut Colorado is home to a variety of backcountry huts that visitors can rent yearround, a fantastic option for hiking away from the crowds without needing extensive backcountry training.The most well-known ones are the 10th Mountain Division Huts, the brainchild of veterans from the elite WWII unit that trained near Leadville to fight in the steep terrain

of the Alps and returned to Colorado after the war.

Amenities vary among the collection of more than 30 huts, but you’ll generally find wood-burning stoves, cookware and utensils, beds with mattresses, and outhouses with toilet paper. Basically, everything you need except for a sleeping bag, personal items, food and emergency gear.

A great option for hikers and mountain bikers looking for a bit more support: the San Juan Huts. Seeking a more full-service experience? Try the luxe Thelma Hut, located between Ouray and Silverton along U.S. 550, where your host will cook three meals per day.

ne of the Northern Colorado Owlz is commonly seen on the baseball diamond, but off the field, he’s also a businessman.

Alex Jackson, who often plays as the designated hitter, started Uncommon Athletics last October.

“A big thing with the apparel that we make is it’s tailored athletes, then it also tailored to street wear. It’s kind of a mix, what we have,”Jackson said.“You pretty much have everything when it comes to new designs and athletic wear. There’s a lot of big athletes wearing it, so that’s another thing that kind of puts it above other brands.”

Jackson played baseball at Wichita State from 2017 through the shortened 2020 season. He finished his career 28 | mywindsor | JULY 2022

He went undrafted in the 2020 MLB Draft, which was abbreviated due to COVID. For him, starting the brand was about representing players like himself. The players who haven’t had the meteoric rise or been able to break through to where they want to be.

He’s doing it through clothing and social media. Those have become big for athletes to make their marks —

Jackson wrote on Instagram that he wanted the brand to encourage other athletes to “unapologetically be yourself.” With their work in their respective activities partnered with that, Jackson hopes to see others continue to improve and reach their goals.

Jackson Arnold, an Oklahoma football commit and Lane Allen, a Texas baseball commit have modeled for the company. Other followers include Codey McElroy, a tight end for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers; Kyle Johnston, a pitcher with the Toronto Blue Jays; and Keylan Kilgore, a pitcher with the Philadelphia Phillies.

Of course, some of the Owlz can be spotted in the brand.

Currently, the brand focuses on shorts, shirts and sweatshirts. They are often made of cotton or other sweatwicking fabrics. Apparel features the

The company was started in Dallas, with many items produced in Los Angeles, while Jackson is up in northern Colorado with the Owlz.

He has help with the business, so he can also try to perform well on the field.

Jackson leads the team with 19 runs and 32 hits. He also is third on the team with 20 RBI and second with three home runs.

One of his best hits came against the Rocky Mountain Vibes to bring the Owlz within one run. He launched a homer over the fence to score three in the ninth inning.
