OVID-19 forced the cancellation of most events in 2020. Now that things are returning to their prepandemic state, Taste of Windsor will pick up where it left off in 2019.

Because the event is tied in with the Windsor Summer Concert Series, the Stolen Winnebagos will perform for those in attendance. The band is from Kansas City, Missouri, and plays a wide variety of genres.

Visitors should bring lawn chairs or blankets to enjoy their dinner and the band.

The event, expected to draw 1,500 to 2,000 guests, is free and will all be

outdoors. Haines said the planning team got lucky that the first event is free, outdoors and during a time that people want to be outside.

“We’re just giddy. I know I am,” Haines said. “I’ve only been with the Greeley Tribune since 2019, so I’ve only had a year of events and then we hit COVID. For me, personally, I’m more than excited to have events come back.”

Masks and pre-registration are not required, but guests are encouraged to practice physical distancing. If anyone feels sick, though, Haines said the staff is asking them to stay home.

THE RETURN OF THE WINDSOR SUMMER CONCERT SERIES GIVES US SOMETHING TO LISTEN TO

A

colorful and treasured tradition has returned to Windsor with the Thursday Night Summer Concert Series at Boardwalk Park.

For more than 15 years, the series has lured friends and families to hear country,rock,folk,funk and other genres of music in a relaxed, beautiful atmosphere.

Lexie Spykstra, recreation coordinator of events and sponsorships for theTown of Windsor, was born and raised in the community. She fondly recalls attending the concert series and said that it was moved to Boardwalk Park after the bandshell was constructed.

She has a keen understanding of what the event, which runs through Aug. 19, means for Windsor residents and visitors from the perspective as a native and as a town employee.

"I think it's a sense of community where people can look forward to a concert in the park everyThursday throughout the summer. It is extremely family oriented, family friendly with food trucks and dancing," Spykstra said. "It's a very comforting atmosphere. And I'd even call it cozy."

This year marks the return of the series after a year-long gap due to COVID-19 limitations.

"It was very difficult," Spykstra said of last year's cancelation. "The Summer Concert Series was my favorite part, and it was taken away. But we've heard only good things from the community about bringing it back and how appreciative they are. It's definitely you don't know a good thing until it's gone."

The performers are just as happy as the crowd to be back.

"They are very grateful we are back. Like most communities, we weren't the only ones who canceled.They were left with no place to play.This summer,they are getting all booked and are escstatic to be out and about," Spykstra said.

Every Monday starting in early June, Spykstra and other staff prepare the park to make sure the weekly event goes well. She said the series so far has gone off without a hitch despite some warm weather and a challenge in finding enough food trucks for the series.

"It's kind of a group effort as far as putting these concerts on for the community. Our Parks Department is phenomenal, and we wouldn't be able to do it without them."

The town follows Centers for Disease Control guidelines for this event, which calls for social distancing. Masks are not required. Concerts are from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Thursdays at the park, 100 N. 5th St. Bring lawn chairs and blankets.

ook out, Tony Hawk and Matt McKeen. There are some new kids in town.

On Friday, June 25th, about 20 kids headed over to Eastman Skate Park in Windsor to showcase their best and sickest tricks for a chance to claim the top spot in the fifth annual Windsor Grind Skateboard and Scooter Competition.

With just about every event that was scheduled in 2020, the competition was sidelined due to the pandemic.

“I am so excited to have this back,” said Amy McFadden with the Clearview Library District. “Our annual streak was broken last year with COVID, but we are glad to be back.”

Friday’s event proved that a year off doesn’t mean you lose your balance or passion as competitors brought some of the fiercest, and somewhat frightening, tricks to impress the judges and entertain audience members.

“This is such a good thing for our community because it makes good use of our skate park. The skate park gets used by scooters and skaters anyway, but now we can involve the library and town,” said Tucker Valentine, library outreach assistant. “It also gives them a chance to compete in a friendly environment and showcase their talent.”

The competition was open to both scooter riders and skateboarders ages 9 to 18 years old.The event was hosted by the Clearview Library District and city of Windsor.

Each competitor had two 45-second runs and could use as much or as little of the skate park as they wanted. The top three competitors were then given a third 45-second run opportunity to impress the judges.

Judges scored each skateboarder and scooter rider on the different tricks they performed, the difficulty of the tricks and each competitors’ style.

Taking the top three spots in the scooter competition for the 9-12 year age group were Jordan Payton in first

place, return competitor Kasen Samuels in second and Khi Bateman in third place.

For the 13-18 year scooter group, Mitch Karsten came in first, with Sterling Barth earning second place and Andrew Smithers in third.

Sterling Barth, who competed in the 2019 competition, winning second place, showed off some of the tricks he had been working on in 2020 such as a front flip and barrel roll.

For the skateboard competition, which featured skaters 9-18 years old, Ryan Waag took the top honor, with Jonah Oldright coming in second and Aiden Bindel snagging third place.

Winners of the competition received prizes from The Bearing scooter and BMX shop in Loveland.

Seven museums offer a gateway to the rich history of the area—why not stretch that out to make a summer’s worth of history by exploring one museum a week?

There’s Windsor History Museum, Art & History Center, Windsor Severance Fire Rescue Museum, Greeley History Museum, Meeker Home Museum, Centennial Village Museum and Colorado Model Railroad Museum (See the websites of all these at http://coloradomuseums.co/regions).

EXPLORING WINDSOR’S PAST Laura Browarny, cultural supervisor for Windsor, said the Windsor History Museum (formerly the Broadway Park Museum) features six historic buildings built betw tween w 1882 and the 1920s. Although many towns credit their start to the coming of the railroad, Browarny said the buildings tell the story of Windsor’s beginning from a stagecoach stop to the completion of the Greeley, Salt Lake and Pacific Railroad

The Art & Heritage Center (AHC) is a hub for arts, culture and history. It doesn’t have anything permanently on exhibit but hosts art and history exhibits throughout the year and provides opportunities for the community to participate in art and cultural programs for all ages.

You can walk through the 1882 train depot, 1886 schoolhouse and teacher's quarters, farmhouse, summer kitchen, beet shack, and chapel as well as explore exhibits and hands-on activities for all ages. She said you can also observe artifacts of the bison kii site national historic site from thousands of years ago.Your kill tour can be self- guided or supplemented by folks on the site.

Browarny added, “One of the stories we love to tell is of the German Russian people who came as “stoop workers” in

built a small house situated half-way between Greeley and Fort Collins.

The “half-way” house directed travelers along a route that was soon adopted by the Greeley, Salt Lake and Pacific Railway. The City of Greeley operates four museums, according to Katie Ross, Curator of Collections for Culture, Parks, & Recreation in Greeley.

Hazel E. Johnson Research Center, which has an impressive collection of documentary and photographic resources available for researchers, students and genealogists.

Meeker Home Museum: Learn the fascinating story of the Meekers and their vision for a Utopian community

The Greeley History Museum showcases and preserves Greeley and other parts of Weld County’s history through exhibitions, programs, permanent collections and research.

It includes three floors of permanent and changing galleries. The building, originally built in 1929 for the Greeley Tribune, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and became home to the Greeley History Museum in 2005.

The museum’s main exhibit is “Utopia: Adaptation on the Plains,” and the museum’s other galleries include updated themes throughout each year.

Artifacts, photographs and hands-on opportunities create a meaningful visitor experience. In addition to exhibits, the lower level of the museum contains the 16 | mywindsor | JULY 2021

during a tour of this National Register Historic home. The home shows Meeker’s founding principles of education, cooperation and family. The Meeker women were also involved in the quest for women’s rights.

Centennial Village Museum is an 8-acre living history experience featuring over 35 architecturally unique structures, costumed interpreters, heritage farm animals, beautifully landscaped grounds and interactive experiences. The historic homes tell stories of the cultures that made Greeley what it is today.There are different areas in the site that focus on the westw tward w expansion, immigrants, a German Russian shanty, different shops and the changeover from wagons to the Auto Age. There are currently no animals except for chickens and turkeys, but you can see people doing interpretations in stations on the site. Some examples are volunteers in the car garage which show the changeover to the Auto Age, people in the stagecoach area and a hard-worki king i blacksmith.

Colorado Model Railroad Museum The Colorado Model Railroad Museum is one of the finest, one-of-akii miniature accomplishments in the kind world. This 5,500 sq. feet masterpiece required over five years and 280,000

The oneof-a-kind museum has hundreds of railroad scenes, more than 500 scale locomotives, 80 scale miles of train track, thousands of other handmade artifacts including around 28,000 handmade trees. The museum houses thousands of artifacts including a 1919 Colorado and Southern Caboose that you can tour.

Unlike typical model railroads, the

museum utilizes an open-air design with broad aisles and theatrical lighting, allowing visitors to clearly view the detailed scenery from just inches away.

The Colorado Model Railroad Museum utilizes a dispatcher for train operations for the public.

Making Tails Wag: A Food Truck for Your Dog

J

ackie Good recently got to see her hard work pay off in real time.

Good is the events and promotions coordinator for Poudre Pet and Feed Supply,an animal supply company that touts itself as a friend of domestic companions of all breeds and species.Though part of Good’s official job is tied to the events and promotions spelled out in her job title, she also plays a role that’s directly tied to Poudre Feed’s furry clientele.

Specifically, Good does all of the baking for the Poudre Pet and Feed Supply’s relatively new Treat Truck,a mobile purveyor of treats specifically made for dogs. Good has been the creative force behind canine spins on food truck goodies, items like “Pup Cream Sandwiches”,turkey muffins and goat’s milk shakes – all designed to delight the canine palate.

Recently,Good sold a pair of dog owners a “Pupsicle,” a frozen treat designed specifically for dogs,and was able to immediately see how it went over.

“We were just at Maxline Brewing with the truck.We did some Pupsicles, and I made one that had an edible chicken stick,”Good recalled.“The couple that bought 18 | mywindsor | JULY 2021

the treat sat on a little bench – they held the popsicles and the dogs ate it out of their hands. It’s fun to watch people and pets interact like that.”

Encouraging those kinds of moments is the mission behind Poudre Feed’s Treat Truck, a converted mobile food station for dogs that the owners procured in New Mexico. Though the Treat Truck officially made its debut in 2019, a year marked by the challenges of a global pandemic got in the way of the vehicle’s official debut.

With COVID numbers headed down and more public events on track for the summer of 2021, Good and the rest of the crew at Poudre Feed are hoping the coming months will prove to be kind for the Treat Truck.

“We did bring the truck to a few of our winter events in 2019,but then 2020 hit; this is the first year that we’re hitting the ground running.This is the first year that we have it at all our events,” Good said. “Basically, we’ve titled ourselves a food truck for dogs. We use products that we sell at our store to create homemade treats for dogs. We also have some bulk options, which we’d sell at our treat bins.”

Even though it’s a converted food truck, Good said that none of the treats are prepared in the vehicle itself.Instead,treats ranging from canine ice cream goodies to doggie smoothies and sandwiches are lovingly prepared in the kitchen and simply transported via the truck.

The entire process has proven rewarding for Good,who balances her office duties for the pet chain with work in the kitchen for four-legged diners.

“We’ll also be at Taste of Fort Collins,” she added. “We’re going to try to be anywhere we can be to serve all our customers.”

“I do all the baking personally. A lot of the recipes I find online and I’ll tweak,” Good said, adding that the truck also offers items that customers can take home to dogs. “Personally, I love to bake; it fed into that.When I get to the events, it’s fun to watch.”

hursday, July 15 marks the return of Taste of Windsor after hitting pause last summer because of COVID-19.

Over its 11 years, Taste has become so much more than a food festival. The town’s premier event kicks off the Summer Concert Series, which this year features live music by the Stolen Winnebagos, a Kansas City trio performing a diverse range of upbeat songs from the 1950s to today’s hottest tunes. The event showcases both longtime and new food vendors, alongside local businesses offering giveaways and the chance to visit and mingle in the sunshine. Taste promises a sampling of what laid-back summertime used to be like.

In that, it’s an opportunity to savor all the separate elements of the town’s character, which combined, make Windsor the wonderful, welcoming community it is.

MASKS CONTINUE TO BE SOURCE OF DEBATE FOR WINDSOR-AREA SCHOOL DISTRICT COMMUNITY

For nearly an hour on Monday night, the Weld RE-4 School District Board of Education listened to an impassioned group of parents and community members.

The topic of conversation early in the board meeting was masks, the district policy on masks for the upcoming school year and, to a lesser degree, the COVID-19 vaccine.

Approximately 55 to 60 people crowded into the board meeting room in the district office building in Windsor looking for clarity and guidance on when the district might reveal its mask plans for next year — and to register their displeasure with the slow pace of sending out requested information.

“The inaction by the board is the same as blatantly ignoring us,” Windsor resident Aaron Smith said. “You have to represent us, parents and residents.

As parents, we have an obligation to 28 | mywindsor | JULY 2021

speak up when we see something out of place.”

The district, though, said it’s taking a measured approach and on the established timeline it laid out for families in the spring. In mid-May, the district sent an email saying changes would be made for 2021-22 on masks and quarantines and the information would be shared this summer.

“It was passionate and intense and I know it was com ing from a place of love for the kids,” Board of education president Jennifer Lieber said during and after

the meeting that the district hopes to have more information for families in early July — at some point in the range of July 4-9.

Weld RE-4 starts school on Aug. 11.

Lieber said “there a lot of what ifs” in crafting a plan for returning district students to school this year, relating to COVID-19. Lieber said the district recognizes the importance of such a decision that will impact “the dayto-day operations of the district and making sure we have the resources to educate students.”

“If it’s not masks, then what does that mean for quarantines?” Lieber asked. “We’re trying to work through the consequences” of all of the possible scenarios.

Chief operating officer Jason Seybert said the district is in correspondence and collaboration with the Weld County Department of Public Health and Environment to help the school system “make the best educational decision” on policies this fall.

But, the process is not moving fast enough for some families in the district, which serves approximately 7,500 students in kindergarten through 12th grades, mainly in Windsor and Severance.

While some in the board meeting room were focused on the district to communicating plans as soon as possible, a few others raised the issue of vaccines. Specifically, mention was made on mandates on vaccines might come down from the district and how unvaccinated students might then be treated.

“It’ll have to be addressed before school starts,” Seybert said.

At times the meeting was intense and dramatic.

The public comments boiled down to choice for many of those assembled before the board — choice in wearing a mask and choice on the vaccine.

A man who declined to give his name told the board if the district requires unvaccinated students to wear a mask they will be branded as if wearing “a Scarlet Letter or Star of David.”

“What we are asking is that parents will be able to have a choice,” Smith said. “We won’t wait for another month to pass by. We are demanding a decision.”

started by Windsor resident Brooke Alles and several others in the district community. Alles, who spoke earlier in the public-comment period, is among those who have since started a Facebook page called Guardians of RE4. Alles and Smith are among the administrators of the 128-member private group started on June 17.

“I think a lot of parents want to know what our core values are this year,” Alles said after the meeting. “Last year it was in-person learning. I think it’s hard when we don’t know where they stand.”

Lieber was unperturbed by any tension or intensity generated during the meeting.

“It was passionate and intense and I know it was coming from a place of love for the kids,” Lieber said, adding the comments and information from the meeting would be shared with district administration. “It’s our job to listen.

They want information and they want it now.”

FORMER ARMY ILLUSTRATOR AMONG ARTISTS TO BE FEATURED AT GREELEY ARTS PICNIC

A

fter emigrating from Holland to the United States with his wife and firstborn, Seiger Hartger found it increasingly difficult to make a living as an artist.

Harger, 72, was a working artist and teacher before emigrating in 1971.To help make ends meet in his family’s new home country, Hartger enlisted in the Army.

Instead of issuing Hartger a weapon to wield, the Army assigned him as an illustrator, to document daily military life and create artistic works for military communications and publications.

“Every headquarters has a visual aides department where they do illustrations for advertisements, briefings and books,” Hartger said.

During his service, Hartger created drawings, watercolors, etchings, woodcuts 34 | mywindsor | JULY 2021

and other types of artwork depicting various scenes of military combat, training and life. He also managed a creative team and was the director of the graphics school for the NCO Illustrators School at Lowry Air Force Base in Colorado.

“We taught people from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard,” Hartgers explained. “Anyone who wanted to be an illustrator would have to come through my school.”

In 1990, Hartger was asked to create artwork documenting the life of soldiers deployed to Operation Desert Shield in the Persian Gulf.

“We visited all the combat units for two weeks, as many as we could find,” he said. “And then … we looked around and saw units doing their thing, and we documented it to our best ability.”

Despite being in charge of illustrating life during combat, Hartger doesn’t like to talk about some of the tragedies and horror

that he witnessed on the battlefield.

“Don’t think that war is pretty. It’s not,” he said. “I make nice paintings about it, but I don’t want to talk about it.”

After 24 years of service, Hartger retired from the Army in 1996 with the title of master sergeant.

After leaving the Army, Hartgers moved to Greeley, where he earned his second bachelor’s degree as well as a master’s degree from the University of Northern Colorado.

He then began teaching for his alma mater’s School of Art and Design, eventually working his way up to becoming head of the printmaking department and co-heading the drawing department.

“An artist has to work, and I always loved to work. I am proud of my work,” Hartger said. “The city of Greeley and the university took great care of me.”

During his tenure at UNC, Hartger created a series of 16 paintings and

drawings for the university, called “Impressions of Campus.” The series is the first of its kind for UNC and commemorates the school’s more than 100 years of history.

The work, interestingly enough, is a painting of the arts picnic itself. The watercolor piece features visitors pursuing artists’ booths while soft, billowy clouds hang overhead.

“When the rubber meets the road, your work needs to show people what you are,” Hartger said. “And I am a romantic. I am overly romantic and overly emotional.”

In addition to watercolors, Hartger creates etchings, drawings and oil paintings. He is working with the city of Greeley for an exhibit at the Tointon Gallery at the Union Colony Civic Center.

Hartger specializes in photorealistic artwork using a variety of different mediums. The artist said he works in one type of medium for three to four months and then switches to a different one, which prevents him from getting bored or burned out. No matter what he’s using, Hartger loves them all.

“On a flat piece of canvas, I create the illusion of three dimension. I create the illusion of people walking,” he said.

“I even painted myself into some of my paintings. I’m 72. I am a senior, and I felt that I earned the right to put myself in to the paintings too.”

One of Hartger’s pieces has been chosen as the backdrop and inspiration for the 2021 Greeley Arts Picnic poster.

“We had him scheduled to show in 2020 and COVID interfered,” said Kim Snyder, the city’s public art coordinator.

“The gallery has been closed since the start of all that and will not reopen until early 2022. Hartger’s exhibit will probably be scheduled for late spring 2022.”

Hartger is eager to showcase his work at the Tointon and described the pieces as some of his best work.

Hartger hopes to work with the state to document some Colorado’s most majestic and beautiful sites.

“I want to do the same thing I did for Greeley for the state of Colorado, but I don’t know who to approach yet,” he said.

“But I want to wait until my show at the Tointon is over, so they can see my work.

That’s my next goal.”

Until then, Hartger is keeping busy by visiting his grandchildren and taking numerous trips around the U.S. to capture the beauty of the country in his artwork.

“America is so beautiful. Oh man, you just can’t believe it. I love America,” Hartger said. “You go to Texas, and they are different, but they are still Americans.

They are not the same as the people from New York or Colorado or other states. And I love that difference between the people.

That’s what makes America great.”

he Weld County Department of Public Health and Environment is once again reminding residents to use caution around wild animals due to the risk of rabies.

A resident recently received a court summons for adopting a litter of baby raccoons that appeared to be abandoned.

Wild animals should be left alone, because they are known for carrying rabies. They are often euthanized to test for rabies as well, the department states.

People should not feed, touch or otherwise handle wild animals, including stray cats and dogs, to minimize their risk of contracting rabies.

Weld County has recorded six confirmed cases of animal rabies, all of which were from skunks. Skunks and bats are the primary carriers of rabies in the state, but the disease has previously been found in raccoons, foxes, coyotes, dogs and cats. It impacts the nervous system by causing inflammation in the brain and spinal cord, and it is almost always fatal.

WINDSOR MUSEUM SEEKS REGIONAL ARTISTS TO CONTRIBUTE TO FORCES OF NATURE EXHIBIT

he Windsor Art and Heritage Center is looking for regional artists to submit works for an upcoming exhibit.

“Forces of Nature” will be on display at the center from Sept. 4 through Jan. 9, 2022. The exhibit will represent the beauty, chaos, symmetry and destruction of the forces of nature, according to a news release from the town of Windsor.

The Windsor Art and Heritage Center is located at 116 5th St., in Windsor.

Entry to the exhibit is free, and all forms of art will be considered. Each artist may submit up to three items for consideration. Submissions will be accepted online through Sunday, Aug. 8 at www.surveymonkey.com/r/ WindsorForcesofNature.

Artists will compete for f irst, second, third and Community Choice awards of $150, $75, $50 and $75, respectively.
