Fun for the whole family

The 2022 Morgan County Fair official fair dates are July 29 – Aug. 4, and a variety of events will be held that guarantee to be fun for everyone. The fair officially kicks off Friday with the market poultry show at 8:30 a.m. and the breeding and market rabbit show at 10 a.m.

Also on Friday is the Open Class Home Economics Show which has a variety of classes from baking and canning to photography, crafts, and more. Entries can be taken Thursday July 28 from 6:30-8 p.m., or from 8-11 a.m. on Friday July 29. Judging begins at 12 p.m., and is open to the public. The Open Class Bake Sale will be Friday evening at 6:30 p.m. in the Mark Arndt Events Center.

day, July 30. The bull competition on Friday evening and Saturday morning are free to the public and the bull riding will start at 6:30 p.m. with the gates opening at 5 p.m. Tickets are available for purchase at the gate.

Saturday also brings the goat show, in which members of Morgan County 4-H and FFA members from Morgan County will show their breeding and market goats.

This show begins with goat showmanship at 9 a.m., at the MultiPurpose Building at the Morgan County Fairgrounds.

The market lamb and breeding sheep show are the main event on Sunday, July 31, with that show starting at 3 p.m. For its second year at the Morgan County Fair will be the breeding swine show which will be held at 3: p.m. on Monday, Aug. 1, with swine showmanship and market swine to follow.

On Tuesday, Aug. 2, the day will kick off with the breeding beef judging at 10 a.m., followed by the market beef show and then beef showmanship. That afternoon the annual Bottle Calf, Lamb and Kid show will be held at 3 p.m. in the Indoor Arena, for children under 8 years of age. No pre-entry is needed, however all animals must be tame and must be born after Jan. 1, 2022. This is a fun opportunity for the younger youth to bring out an animal to show off.

Rounding out the day on Tuesday, Aug.2 is a Family Fun Event hosted by the Morgan County 4-H Council that will include a dunk tank, corn hole tournament, and other games for youth and families to partake in. The day will end with entertainment by comedian, David Testroet from 6-7 p.m., which will provide fun for the whole family. This event is free to attend and is sponsored by the Morgan County 4-H Council and Premier Farm Credit.

Wednesday, Aug. 3 offers many events for all ages. The day kicks off with the Dairy show at 9 a.m. and Second Year Catch-it Dairy Sale at noon. Then 7th Annual Mud Volleyball Tournament will begin at 12:30, Cricket Races will be at 2 p.m. followed by the Pedal Tractor Pull. Next is the annual

Steak Fry dinner which is from 5-7 p.m. After the Steak Fry Dinner stick around to watch the youth participate in the Catch-it-Contests as they attempt to catch animals ranging from rabbits and chickens to calves, lambs, goats, and pigs.

Following the Catch-it-Contests will be a free barn dance featuring Owl Canyon Outlaws, who will play from 8-11 p.m. and is sponsored by the City of Brush! and the Morgan County Fair Board.

Wrapping up the 2022 Morgan County Fair is the Junior Livestock Sale which is held at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 4. This is an opportunity for community members to come and support the youth in Morgan County 4-H and FFA as they display their hard work through their livestock in the sale.

Enjoy special foods made by Morgan County 4-H members at the 2022 Creative Cooks Contest Thursday, July 28th at 5:30 p.m. at the Morgan County Fairgrounds Event Center in Brush. 4-H members will be presenting a wide variety of dishes from cuisines around the world.

Judging of Creative Cooks begins at 3 p.m. on July 28 with awards being announced about 5:30 p.m. Following awards, the public is invited to sample foods from all the entries and receive a booklet of recipes.

The top entries of each category will be eligible to compete at the state Creative Cooks Contest held during the Colorado State Fair on Aug. 28 in Pueblo.

Home Economics Exhibit update

Open Class Home Economics has nearly 300 opportunities for individuals from Morgan County and surrounding areas to enter. In fact, our Open Class Divisions are open to “the world” and it is not uncommon to have exhibits from Morgan County natives who now live in distant states. Entries for Open Class Home Economics are accepted Thursday July 28th from 6:30-8 p.m. and again on Friday July 29 from 8-11 a.m. All judging will begin at 12 p.m. and will be open to the public again this year!

There are no fees to enter the Open Home Economics classes, and there are many great prizes that can be won.

Before bringing exhibits to the fair, it is important to check the fair book for class requirements.

Annually, the overall superintendents look at classes for revisions.

In photography, there are many different classes that one can exhibit in, and the entries are to be matted only and not framed or put under glass. This came about as a suggestion from several photography judges and is the way exhibits are presented in other fairs. It will also be much safer to exhibit without the concern for broken pictures which might fall.

Clothing construction is another area that has changed over the

years. Most classes in construction were regrouped into home sewing and specialty sewing classes. This provides more opportunities for those who enjoy showing their sewing skills to exhibit in a variety of classes.

Youth are also encouraged to enter into the open class, with some divisions having separate classes just for youth, and others the youth competing against all entries in that class.

Showing your flowers, vegetables at the fair

The Morgan County Fair Open Class Floriculture and Open Crops and Garden Vegetables Show will begin with entries being accepted from 6:30- 8 p.m. on Friday, July 29 and 8-11 a.m. Saturday, July 30 at the Mark Arndt Events Center in Brush. Judging is closed to the public this year and begins at 1 p.m. at the Events Center. A $.50 fee is collected for each entry. All flowers and garden vegetables must be grown by the exhibitor.

Children under eight years of age as of Jan. 1, 2022, may enter the Tiny Tots Floriculture Division where there is no entry fee. The Tiny Tots Floriculture Division is not judged and participants do not receive premiums; however the participants have the opportunity to talk to the judge about their project.

Adults and children may participate in any of over 40 classes in floriculture. A few examples of classes are calendula, 3 blooms; Echinacea, 3 blooms; marigolds, dwarf type, 3 blooms; celosia, 3 blooms, any variety; snapdragons, 3 spikes; zinnia, button type, 3 blooms, and many more. In Open Crops and Garden, adults and children may choose to participate in any of more than 60 classes of fruits, vegetables and herbs.

Youth may also enter into the Adult/Youth Veggie Basket with first place receiving a useful gift that is sponsored by the Morgan County Garden Club and Plains Realty.

There are also five special classes in the Floral Arrangement Division including Mini Bouquet, Designer’s Choice and Fairy Garden. For the Floral Arrangement Division no artificial flowers are allowed. The Grand Champion Floriculture Exhibitor will receive a Trophy sponsored by Edward’s Right Price Market and Flowerland as well as a $50 cash award donated by the open floriculture sponsors.

Cake Decorating Contest champs Morgan County Extension Office

On Thursday, July 7, Morgan County Extension held a Cake Decorating Contest. At this contest, 4-H members are asked to bake a cake before the contest and then decorate it while the judge watches them. We had 14 amazing participants this year!

The Unit 1 Junior reserve champion was Lainey Jones with a candy flower cake. Collins Anderson was the Unit 1 Junior division champion, and she created a sheep cake.

In the Unit 2 Junior division, Ella Farnik took Unit Champion with a pink rose cake, and Peighton Arndt took reserve with her sunflower cake.

Talan Hall and Thatcher Queen captured the first place awards in the senior and junior divisions at the 2022 Morgan County Fair 4-H Shotgun Shoot. Twenty-five youth competed in the contest on July 10, 2022.

Twenty-three Morgan County 4-H shooters gathered for their County Fair air rifle and air pistol shoot on July 17, at the Morgan County Fairgrounds Multi-purpose Building. Individual champions and place finishers were determined in all air rifle and air pistol shooting disciplines. Muzzleloader shoot held, pre-county fair events continue

Danielle Moon and Ben Werner captured the first place awards in the senior and junior divisions at the 2022 Morgan County Fair 4-H Muzzleloader Shoot. Eleven youth competed in the contest that was held on Friday July 15. The contest requires 4-H members to shoot a total of 15 shots, five at targets shaped like bottles, five at bullseye targets, and five at a metal gong.

Placings in the senior division were 1) Danielle Moon, 2) Chad Schilling, 3) Talan Hall, 4) Madison Thomas, 5) Ethan Bohl, and 6) Rylan Schreiner.

Placings in the junior division were 1) Ben Werner, 2) Kaine Eicher, 3) Arisa Eicher, 4) Shylynn Larrick, and 5) Bentley Larrick.

Superintendents for the muzzleloader shoot were DJ Eicher and Andy Larrick. All coaches for 4-H Shooting Sports are volunteers through Morgan County 4-H, are trained by individuals with Colorado 4-H using a nationally approved curriculum. The season runs from around April- August, and the coaches spend an average of four hours a month teaching the youth in this discipline.

The 2022 Morgan County Fair 4-H Shooting Sports Contests kicked off with the 4-H Five Stand and Skeet shoot on Saturday morning south of Akron. Twelve senior shooters and three junior shooter delivered several exciting rounds of competition on July 9.

Five Stand results for the senior division were Odin Nilsen, first, with a score of 33 out of 50; Grayson Johnson, second; Americo Lorenzini, third; Talan Hall, fourth; and Travis Hall, fifth. Also Senior grayson Johnson competing in the Morgan County 4-H Shotgun Skeet Contest.
