Before heading out to the garden this spring or tackling that list of home improvement projects consider another list.

Falls, sprains, strains, cuts, burns, poisoning, and insect bites and stings are just a few injuries that can occur when a moment of inattention turns a fun project into a trip to the emergency room, urgent care or doctor’s office.

“Don’t get in over your head if you’re trying to do something, especially a handy homeowner thing. It’s best to hire it out,” said Christine Stone, owner of Remedy Clinic, an internal medicine practice that opened in Longmont in 2020.

and avid gardeners stay up to date on vaccines, wear protection and hire out any task that could potentially lead to injury.

A particularly important vaccine is the tetanus shot every 10 years.

The shot prevents tetanus bacterial infection, characterized by muscle spasms, from entering the nervous system from a cut or puncture or direct contact with dirt and soil.

Also important is engaging in proper hygiene, washing hands and covering cuts and scrapes to prevent additional bacteria in soil from causing skin and other soft tissue infections.

Gardeners in particular will want to wear protection, such as a wide-brimmed hat, sunscreen and sunglasses, to prevent sun exposure, as well as gloves and long sleeves to avoid contact with poisonous plants, such as English ivy, a cousin of poison ivy that causes a rash.

“Here in Colorado, sun protection is kind of key,” Stone said. “We get a lot of exposure to solar rays.”

time. Lightning can cause a number of injuries, including burns and respiratory arrest or failure, so having situational awareness is key, Stone said.

“If you’re out and there’s lightning, you probably should not be out,” Stone said.

For those with seasonal allergies to allergens like grass and pollen, additional protective measures are recommended for mowing and trimming.

Stone recommends full clothing coverage and wearing a mask to cut down on exposure to the allergens.

“I hate to say it but maybe they should wear a mask,” Stone said.

“It’s just a barrier. Compared to the coronavirus, pollen is pretty huge (in size).”

Another protective measure is lifting to ability and asking for help or hiring out the chore, Stone said.

“A common injury I see in the springtime, ladies of a certain age in their sixties, seventies and eighties getting really excited about gardening

and lifting things that are too heavy for them,” Stone said.

Women, and men, too, may lift a 50-pound bag of potting soil or something equally as heavy and cause a compression fracture in the thoracic spine or upper back.

Women age 60 and older are more prone to osteoporosis and should take extra care to protect their backs, Stone said.

“Save your energy and body for the stuff you really enjoy doing and hire out the things that might not be appropriate for your age,” Stone said.

Opens Doors (and hearts)

It was jam packed.

The grand opening of Yoga Pod’s Longmont studio on Feb. 6 exceeded every hope of co-owners and husband and wife, Gerry and Nicole Wienholt. The community’s response to the new site was a blessing, to say the least. ”The studio was bustling,” Nicole said.

“Both community classes at noon and four o’clock were at capacity. It filled us up. We were energized for days.”

Forty-five of Yoga Pod’s 73 teachers turned up for the celebration, too, and a happy reunion amongst themselves and students ensued. The Chamber of Commerce orchestrated the ribbon cutting. Champagne flowed. ”This was what we envi12 LONGMONT MAGAZINE

The Wienholts, both 200-hour certified teachers, live in Longmont and have put heart and soul into creating a local studio that embraces their community, judges no one, and encourages people of all skill levels and body types to try yoga.

Yoga begins with breath. Without mastering the breath work, you’re just stretching, as Nicole explains.

“Conscious breathing can help calm the nervous system.

Though everyone is singular on the mat, the fact that they come in community to do the work is extraordinary. Everyone who takes a yoga class is potentially going through something, and it’s normal to experience tremendous emotions right then and there. with his grief. A testimony like that is why Yoga Pod exists. “There’s nothing like the energy of loving, compassionate people coming together and the healing power that it has,” Nicole says.

While the practice of yoga is ancient, it’s often viewed with a suspicious side-eye caused by miscon-

ceptions, chief among them that it’s a religion.

Nicole and Gerry take pains to keep their studio pure of any perception of a dominant belief system so that everyone can safely bring their own background and experiences to the mat. Yoga Pod is an open book for anyone to come and just be part of the community.

Dan has upgraded closets in his family’s homes as they’ve lived in Boulder, Gunbarrel and Niwot. His solutions have gotten more elaborate as their needs increased.

Simple Steps His first upgrade was a gift for his wife Andrea. He said, “When she was young, she would go to stores in the mall and all fancy ones had wooden hangers. She felt like you can tell you’ve made it when your closet has wooden hangers. So I ordered a lot of them from Amazon and replaced all her hangers. It made the whole closet feel pretty fancy and well-put together. We March/April 2022

weren’t really planning to reorganize the closet but when we got the new hangers some things were eliminated, and the net result was that it was less crowded.”

In another home, they had used the guest room as an office. “We needed storage,” he said. “It had large, mirrored doors that felt really dated. We took the doors and the hardware off. We found an inexpensive office system for closets at a big box store. It was easy to install and gave the closet structure. We put it together on the weekend. It was quick and easy and hung from the top and didn’t require screws.”

As they have moved, Dan has renovated closets for both children.

“We always put the chest of drawers in the children’s closets. That keeps the chests out of their main bedrooms and hidden away. We put the curtain rods lower down in our daughter’s closet so she can reach everything and she can dress herself without waiting for us to get things down. Sometimes that resulted in questionable style but she’s learning!”

the same space,” he said. “Our closets have automatic lights that come on when the doors open. That’s good because you’re not searching for the switch. I haven’t added long strips of LEDs under the cabinets but that might be next level.”

Dan’s personal pet peeve is wire closet shelves that allow things to fall through and don’t let hangers move back and forth. “There are a lot of innovations that would make it worthwhile to have professionals create complete closets,” he said.

“But for simple systems, it’s pretty easy to cut pieces of plywood and create shelves and add rods. You can make your closets really suit you and your family.”

hile we’ve all been actively encouraged to spend a lot of times on outdoor patios enjoying cocktails over the past few years, there’s nothing quite like an outdoor bar at your own home. A wellstocked outdoor bar can be a great gathering place and, during summer months, offer a bit of privacy when everyone and their dog (quite literally) hits the commercial patio circuit.

Whether an elaborate setup with a full outdoor cooking facility, a tiki theme or something in between, stocking and securing your own

outdoor watering hole comes with a few special considerations.

Matt Dinsmore, whose family owns Longmont’s Wyatt’s Wet Goods, said the primary issues related to an outdoor bar come down to several things: the impact of summertime heat on the products you store out there and the very real hazards of glass bottles and summertime flipflop parties.

“Direct sunlight damages beer and wine quite quickly, while spirits are a lot more resilient,” he said. “I know people who’ve spent a quarter-

million dollars on their patio, but for everyone, it’s important to keep your beer and wine cool. Probably a setup without a glass front is a good idea.”

An enclosed refrigerator or cooler will do the trick. And if you’re planning on including wine, Dinsmore suggests keeping it indoors and bringing it out on the day (or evening) of use.

“If you leave stuff out in the middle of July, it can literally cook the wine.

And if it’s warm enough, the bottle will pop out the cork, and you’re going to end up with a sticky mess.”

Summer Landscaping IN SPRING

BY JOHN TEEHAN for LONGMONT MAGAZINE It’s been a long winter, and we’re all looking forward to enjoying the outdoors again. One of the best ways to do that is in your own yard. It’s convenient and the perfect place to gather with friends and family.

Managing your landscaping can make for a fun and relaxing pastime as well.

But what’s the best way to do it?

When should you get started?

In most cases, the best time to get your summer landscaping plans underway is in the spring. This is the March/April 2022

time to get bulbs in, get the lawn ready, and set up your outdoor spaces in anticipation of the summer.

Here are some things to consider when planning your summer landscaping.

BASIC LAWN CARE People take enormous pride in their lawns. A neat, well-cultivated property not only looks nice but can add significant value to your home.

Here are a few bits of lawn care knowledge to use this spring.

Soil and Fertilization If you’ve been dissatisfied with your lawn in the past, get your soil tested to see what nutrients may need to be added or if there are any other issues you should be aware of. From there, get recommendations from local lawn care experts on the best type of grass to grow in your yard, whether you should start with seed or sod, and what kind of fertilizer to use.

Get this started in the early spring if you can. Because roots grow before the more visible grass blades, you want to take advantage of early fertilization, so your grass has all the LONGMONT MAGAZINE 31

nutrients it needs to give you a nice, even growth.

At the same time, over-fertilization can be a problem, notably if your lawn features bluegrass or tall fescue. Too much growth leads to excessive mowing and watering, which can lead to damage from insects or disease.

Mowing Your Lawn

It’s okay to start mowing your lawn in the spring—keeping the length to around two and a half inches to start and waiting for summer before letting it grow another half-inch or more.

One thing you’ll want to do is make sure your lawn mower blades are sharp. If you haven’t had your blades sharpened in a while, have that done before you begin mowing your lawn. Dull blades can end up tearing your grass instead of neatly slicing through it. Torn grass can be more susceptible to drying out.

Dealing With Crabgrass

If you’re trying to cultivate the perfect lawn, unsightly crabgrass is the last thing you want. Many people find success with a pre-emergent herbicide applied two weeks before crabgrass seeds germinate from mid-April to mid-May. You can also pull crabgrass and other weeds like dandelions or spray them with an herbicide. If you decide to physically remove these unwelcome visitors to your lawn, make sure to get as much of the root as possible.

ESTABLISHING A SUMMER FLOWER GARDEN

Flower gardening can bring a significant amount of pleasure, and many

find developing a flower garden to be both relaxing and invigorating at the same time. But it can also get overwhelming if you take on too much at once. And there is a wealth of variety to choose from.

Here are some tips for setting up your flower garden this year.

Start Small If this will be your first year going for a nicely cultivated flower garden, don’t be too ambitious at first.

While there is a lot of great gardening advice to be found in books and online, there is no better teacher than experience. With that in mind, start your garden small.

By observing your garden over time, you can make adjustments as necessary, such as digging up what didn’t work well and focusing more on those plants that did.

Choose only two or three varieties of flowers to begin with—preferably hardy plants such as irises, tulips, and daffodils. These are cold-resistant flowers you can lay in during the early spring. Hyacinths can be planted after the last spring thaw.

Because Colorado can get very dry in the summer, consider droughttolerant flowers such as petunias and day lilies. Colorful native perennials like yarrow, sage and butterfly weed are a way to add color to beds that don’t receive as much water.

Another good local resource to utilize is the Boulder County CSU Extension office. Their website, boulder.extension.colostate.edu, contains a wealth of information on native plants and Master Gardeners are an email away at mggpa@bouldercounty.org.

Location Matters Choosing the right location is key.

Many flowers you’ll want to plant do best under partial sun. Therefore, you’ll want to pick a place that gets ample light for a good portion of the day, but not so much where excessive sun might do damage.

You’ll also want to choose a spot that is out of the way of foot traffic and other activities. If you use your yard for entertaining or expect to have a lot of kids running around, you should place your flowers where they won’t get trampled.

‘Garden In A Box’

Help Save One of Earth’s Most Valuable Resources— Water.

According to the CSU Extension website, “Outdoor water use accounts for about 55 percent of the residential water use in urban areas along the Front Range, most of which is used on turf.” If that statistic is surprising to you in light of the recent and prolonged droughts—good news—you can play a role in the conservation of possibly the most important asset on earth— water—by swapping a portion, or all, of your lawn for a low-water Garden In A Box from Resource Central.

We put actionable programs into place that people can participate in to save resources.

We educate people to transform their concepts about what Colorado yards should look like. Gardens are a great alternative to a lawn that requires a large volume of water.

Maintaining a lawn requires significantly more water than a low-water/ Xeric garden. We offer residents an affordable way to play their part in water conservation, through Garden In A Box, which is one of our oldest and most popular programs. In 2021 alone, our programs conserved 17.2 million gallons of water! Not only are we a non-profit but we consider ourselves to be a ‘social enterprise’. We don’t rely solely on grants and donations, we form partnerships and get secured funding and pass that down to the residents.”

This program has been a part of the community for nearly two decades.

Resource Central also hosts other programs like their Waterwise Yard Seminars, which start on March 15.

They are free, online and taught by trained experts.

Residents have different program

Resource Central’s Elisabeth Bowman said, “Kentucky Bluegrass lawns require high water consumption whereas a Xeric, lowwater garden uses 50-60 percent less water.”

Bowman, explains it beautifully, “Instead of worrying about which plants should be planted and how to plant them and how will they fair in the weather, we set it up for residents in the Garden In A Box kit. The plants for Garden In A Box are all grown locally. We also work with local landscape designers, Master Gardeners, horticulturists and experts at CSU Extension.”

A big benefit of the Garden In A Box program is in its organizational system for the resident. In other words, gardening can be complicated, especially in a semi-arid state like Colorado. No worries! Resource Central has you covered. Box kits are available in a variety of color palettes, light requirements and sizes.

Some have the added benefit of drawing pollinators and birds to the garden.

We caught up with Carmen Gibson, lead designer at Budget Home Supply (BHS) in Longmont to find out how to get the most bang for your buck — and achieve a timeless look you’ll love many years from now — when planning your next home renovation project.

According to Gibson, in kitchen smart appliances and large, deep drawers are on trend right now, as is the move toward a clean, uncluttered look. To achieve it, many consumers are gravitating toward organizational accessories and products such as utensil holders, spice racks, roll trays, and cabinets dedicated to waste and recycling bins. Do’s and Don’ts

It’s easy to determine the style you’re drawn to today. Knowing what you’re going to enjoy five or 10 years from now, however, is a bit harder. While no one has a crystal ball, Gibson’s design tips are the next thing.

Keep it simple.

Choose simple door styles, white or neutral wood tone cabinet colors and

subway tiles (which come in many sizes). And while countertop choices can be dizzying, Gibson steers clients toward a marble look or lightly veined choices such as Calacatta or Carrara, which offer the kind of classy, clean look that doesn’t get old easily.

Meanwhile, Gibson suggests avoiding trends including arched cabinet doors, appliance garages, and painting your kitchen cabinets a trendy color. Instead, opt for clean, straight lines, open spaces, and classic colors that will stand the test of time.

Taking a strategic approach to your color palette will also help your remodel stand the test of time. “Keep things neutral and classic,” suggests

Plan ahead.

No matter what you choose, know your timeline, plan accordingly, and be patient. Another common mistake homeowners make is failing to allow enough time to get the products they want, says Gibson. “Consumers don’t always realize how long it takes to get their materials and they end up settling for pieces just because they are in stock somewhere.” She’s seen customers end up with sinks, plumbing fixtures, and other pieces they weren’t enthusiastic about.

Gibson also notes that people’s attempts to save money often backfire. For example, replacing just door and drawer faces on your current cabinetry can be almost as expensive as new cabinetry — and doesn’t always work out well. “Most cabinet companies sell standard size doors and there are many things to keep in mind such as door overlay, hinge types, etc,” she explains. “Oftentimes it’s like trying to fit a square peg into a round hole.”

Although you might spend a bit more on quality cabinets, Gibson says it’s generally worth it. “Kitchens are a big investment and oftentimes the heart of the home. Get what you like and be willing to spend a bit extra for it.” She says kitchen cabinet consumers’ main regret is not getting the specialty, organizational cabinets they wanted right off the bat. “They were going to buy aftermarket pieces after the fact to save money and years later that still hasn’t been done.”

Similarly, it can pay to hire a professional for painting projects. “We have also had several clients disappointed with a do-it-yourself paint job.”

“It’s our largest fundraising event of the year,” Brackenridge said. “We were virtual with the event the last two years so we are really excited to hold the event. And it’s our 50th anniversary so it’s an opportunity to celebrate our 50 years with the community of Longmont.”

Food and Drink

Attending guests can expect a “locally centered event,” in more ways than one, Brackenridge said. Event goers will have a chance to nibble their way through tasty dishes prepared by some of Longmont’s favorite foodies themselves—including Summit Tacos, Georgia Boys BBQ, The Roost, Flavor of India, and the Pumphouse. “Animals play a huge part in our lives, and many of our fur babies have been adopted from the humane society. We look forward to providing some fun music for a great cause,” Stratton said.
