Loveland delivers magic with iconic classic It’s as timeless as mistletoe. Whether you’re captivated by the choreography, enchanted by the music, or dazzled by visions of sugar plum fairies, chances are your holiday traditions include a performance of The Nutcracker. Tchaikovsky’s classic ballet seems as synonymous with the season as Santa himself. And here in Loveland, we are spoiled with two opportunities to enjoy.

For a guaranteed dose of warm fuzzies, you won’t want to miss Loveland’s only performance of the holiday tale featuring local artists—the tal6 LOVELAND MAGAZINE

ented students of Loveland Dance Academy and The Conservatory of Greeley! Now in its eighth year, the beloved show is organized, produced and choreographed by Loveland Dance Academy teacher and Artistic Director, Jenni Leinweber. Passionate about dance, Leinweber goes the extra mile and beyond to ensure everyone involved has the chance to shine.

“Ms. Jenni creates roles that open up the play to everyone,” says Loveland Dance Academy Event Manager, Chelsea Garza. “Our take on the classic includes reindeer, candy canes…a whole bunch of fun additions.”

Auditions are held in June, representing the opportunity for young dancers to declare interest and for older students to present themselves for key roles. No one who desires to be involved is turned down. Ultimately, ReporterHerald.com - LovelandMag.com

the cast consists of approximately 100 youth, ages three to 18, with roughly 50 adult volunteers, some of whom participate in the action onstage. “It’s a true family affair,” Garza says. “We have parents who volunteer backstage, help with costumes, and perform. When we have [high school] seniors dancing, we specifically invite their parents to participate onstage, to share their child’s last Nutcracker experience with us.”

For parents participating in the play, no dance experience is necessary.

Leinweber and fellow Loveland Dance Academy instructor Nessa Kerr, facilitate simple roles that can be mastered in just a few rehearsals and to the overall emotion for audience and performers alike. Don’t let the family-centric focus convey the sense that this production is anything December 2018/January 2019

but exceptional in its professionalism, however. “Last year was my first with this production,” Garza says. “I was literally blown away. It is absolutely beautiful.

The dancers do a phenomenal job.”

Orchestra. The combination of high-caliber dancing with the emotive sounds of the orchestra is nothing short of spectacular—just ask any of the 125 committed cast or the roughly 8000 annual attendees.

Early auditions are crucial for Loveland Dance Academy’s high standards. Costume Mistress Jen Tow, needs every minute. In addition to preparing costuming, Tow creates all decorations and props.

The academy rents out specific background sets. “By fall, we’ve got costumes bursting out of our closets,” Garza says.

Heading into its 40th year, Canyon Concert Ballet Company was founded in 1979 by Carole Torguson, a passionate teacher formally trained in classical ballet.

Loveland Dance Academy began producing The Nutcracker to enhance the community’s exposure to the arts and provide a traditional ballet production for its students. “So many people want to come and see it,” Garza says. “And all of our dancers love to be a part of it. It’s more than a beautiful show. It’s a beautiful community.” Loveland Dance Academy’s performances, held over two days, serve to contribute to that community. “We are so proud to showcase our beautiful and talented dancers and artists from our community, in our community,” Leinweber says.

Torguson strongly believed in the importance of listening to one’s body and meeting its needs, from challenge and work to rest.

She had a fondness for nurturing young students and providing them with opportunities to dance. “Her passion and beliefs continue to guide our philosophies today,” says Canyon Concert Ballet Company Executive Director, Jenna Riedi. “Through our dance education offerings and performance opportunities, we try to provide our dancers with every opportunity to thrive.

Our main goal is to bring dance, and the excitement around it, to the community.”

A nonprofit organization, Canyon Concert Ballet Company’s production comes together through the tireless efforts of volunteers and the results are breathtaking. A semi-professional company, Canyon Concert Ballet Company dancers are unpaid; they are, however, provided with numerous opportunities, from free classes to free toe shoes.

“Many of our dancers are preprofessional,” Riedi says. “We have lots of up-and-coming dancers who will get scooped up by a company. We know we’ll lose them eventually—and that’s

a good thing. We want them to have every opportunity.

Maybe one day they’ll return, settle down, and dance with us again.”

While the talent from within the company is staggering, two professional dancers are hired each year for the roles of the Sugar Plum Fairy and her cavalier. This year, the Sugar Plum Fairy will be performed by ballerina Julia Erickson, who dances for the Pittsburgh Ballet. The cavalier will be represented by Christian Tworcyanski, a former New York City Ballet dancer who now performs with a company in Monte Carlo.

No detail is too slight to receive the utmost attention with Canyon Concert Ballet Company’s Nutcracker. The company begins work for the December performances in May, formulating concepts and costumes, with the majority of costumes being made in-house. Each year, the company brings subtle but fascinating variations to the show. Rehearsals begin in August, and become a family-affair. “We rehearse all day Saturdays, and it’s all hustle and bustle, but also all smiles,” Riedi says. “With younger dancers, parents come and hang out. Everyone is all in.

It’s a really special thing.”

And that really resonates with me—if you like someone, or love someone and appreciate them, let them know. He’s taught me to take only what you need, and leave something behind through his persistent generosity at Partners activities. Finally, don’t be afraid to show off and get the attention you deserve. Jesse is the most amazing kid I’ve ever met in my entire life. He’s had some circumstances that require a positive male influence, but we haven’t run into any issues. We are friends— genuine friends who are just hanging out. The impact I’ve had on Jesse has come full circle, and he now has such a huge effect on me.’

And Jesse says, ‘I enjoy being around Ian and hanging out with him. We really like to do archery together and the fun thing about archery is that we practice year round. It is a good experience to keep learning how to get better.’

Partners Mentoring Youth supports its mission with the funds raised through its Christmas for Kids fund drive.

It costs $1,500 a year to support a youth in the program, which includes costs for finding and training safe, quality mentors, hosting activities for youth waiting to be matched, and providing constant support for the youth, families, and volunteers in the programs. “This is a fair price to pay for local kids to gain confidence, build their social and communication skills, get more engaged in their schools

“In conjunction with the fundraising campaign, the organization hosts an annual holiday life-skill activity for kids in our programs each December,” Lewis says. “They get to purchase gifts for their family and loved ones with a donated gift card. They work with their mentors to build a budget that includes the gifts they want to buy, and then we hold a shopping spree and giftwrapping party for them. The youth have so much fun getting to be in the role of gift-giver, which is a new experience for many of them. We also have kids who are able to get within a few cents of their limit –factoring in tax and all –and who learn about budgeting from this activity. It is such a fun way to celebrate the end of the year with generosity and gratitude.”

Visit Loveland, which promotes Loveland events and tourism, created a map of some of the places to see lights, such as Winter Wonderlights and the Christmas Walk in the Woods. The city of Loveland’s Chilson Senior Center wants to bring people inside for lunch, prizes and ugly sweaters.

And the Berthoud Area Chamber of Commerce figured a winter festival should have a lighted parade, a decorating contest, an artisan market—and of course a snow sculpting contest.

“It’s a fun grand entrance,” Mackin said. “It’s all lit up and kind of translucent and there are color-changing lights in it. It’s a magical welcome into the great lawn area.”

There also are six 4-foot LED snowflakes on the hilltop and six new 8-foot LED-lit arches at the base.

“We want to add fun new elements every year to make it different,” Mackin said. “We want to make it bigger and better every year.”

Christmas Walk in the Woods

Take Christmas Walk in the Woods along a quarter-mile trail, where nearly 100,000 lights sparkle on trees, along the ground and over built display structures. Along the way, there will be carolers, musical acts, a Santa stop and a nativity scene.

The event is free, but a canned food item to benefit the Food Bank for Larimer County or an unwrapped toy to benefit Santa Cops of Larimer County is requested. The first 200 people who attend Friday and Saturday nights through Dec. 15 will receive a free gift. There also will be hourly drawings for gift cards, tickets, and other items.

Visit Loveland also launched a Loveland Light Trail map depicting the locations of Winter Wonderlights, the Christmas Walk in the Woods and lights at shopping centers, parks and downtown.

Santa and Mrs. Claus will be waiting to hear Christmas wishes from 5-9 p.m. Friday to Sunday, Dec. 14-16 and 21-23, and cameras are welcome or photographs can be purchased.

The cost is $12 per person, and children 5 and under are free. During the week, the woods will be open with lights only 5-9 p.m. Dec. 17-20 and 7-9 p.m. Dec. 26-31 at $3 per person.

“It makes the magic complete when you can hear the carols all through the woods,” Wild said.

Other stops along the trail will include a 1,500-foot nativity scene and angels, Wild said. The Santa visits, some snowmen and a scene from The Nutcracker will add a commercial appeal, plus there will be a stop for hot chocolate, she said.

The Christmas lights walk started in 2015 with 70,000 lights. The show took a year off in 2017 to not compete with Winter Wonderlights and is returning this year bringing the religious origins of the holiday.

“We decided if we focus on the Christ aspect of the business with a night off from shopping, (visitors) will want to see the Christmas lights with the mention of Christ,” Wild said. “It’s a great way to spend time with your family doing something very Christmas-y.”

The tour is 5-9 p.m. now-Jan. 1, including holidays, featuring more than 150,000 lights on five acres.

“Ultimately, our event is unlike anything in Northern Colorado. It’s botanically-based,” said Korrie Johnston, marketing manager of Gardens on Spring Creek. “It’s a very unique experience.”

Lights are added to garden structures to emulate different elements of a garden. There’s the Garden of Eatin’ outdoor kitchen with fruits and vegetables made out of lights, plus huge flowers, apple trees, a brilliant blue pond, pumpkin patches, grapevines and butterflies, also made out of ReporterHerald.com - LovelandMag.com

“They’re all a little different, but they really add a whimsical holiday flavor to our Garden of Lights,” Johnston said, adding that each year, changes are made to add variety to the walk. “You’ll come through, and it will be a new experience.”

The tour adds to that experience with four lighted village buildings from Woodward’s Holiday Village, which the garden agreed to display last year during construction at the Drake Campus and to continue this year.

During the weekends, there will be visits with Santa, holiday music and entertainment, and seasonal crafts.

Berthoud Snowfest

The ugly sweater can be worn again at Berthoud Snowfest, which combines a hometown winter festival with the sanctioned Colorado State Snow Sculpting Championship Dec. 12-15.

The event will take place on 7th Street on the west side of Fickel Park with the championship ending at 10 a.m. on Dec. 15. Teams of two to three snow sculptors will use handmade snow and hand tools to create large snow sculptures. Five teams are returning from last year of the 11 teams that participated.

“The caliber of the artists is incredible,” said Deanne Mulvihill, executive director of the Berthoud Area Chamber of Commerce, host of the event.

“Coming and watching the creativity of what they do and how they do it is wonderful. Not very often do you get to see artists in action. To actually watch them create, that’s what people need to come and see.”

Four generations ago, Wesley Jones started the business in 1958. Wesley’s son Tom Jones added on a shop and the excavation component as people started requesting underground water line installments.

Tom’s son, and third generation owner Thomas Jones, just handed the reigns over to his son Josh Jones about five years ago.

All four generations have sustained their business by taking on all types of jobs, even the tough ones no one else wants to do. Sometimes that

means excavating through rock at Carter Lake. Other times the hard jobs happen when cities need help in the deep of winter as their water lines keep freezing and breaking.

“One winter we worked day and night to thaw out underground lines and we had to dig down with jack hammers 5-feet deep to reach the lines,” Thomas said. “This was before big excavators came into play. I remember we would do anything in our power to get the job done.

So this time we worked in shifts around the clock to get the water lines thawed out.”

Thomas began his plumbing and excavating career at the age of 14, out in the field on a bulldozer with his father, Tom Jones Sr. “I was very artistic,” Thomas said.

“I have a lot of art abilities. I kind of saw myself doing that. But as I helped my father, I realized I am a person who loves to help others.

him, and the customers, I realized that it touched my heart, and so I stayed in that field.

After he graduated from high school, Thomas trained on the excavation end by learning how to install underground water and sewer lines. He eventually got his plumbers license as well.

“The biggest memories are the amount of different things we used to do,” Thomas said. “My father would blast roads to get water lines into the rock. We did the Berthoud high school foundations and all of the water and sewer, which was a big job for us at the time. We did a lot of farm work, and irrigation. We did

“We are down in holes a lot,” he said.

“I remember one night in Johnstown, I was down in a hole 12-feet deep.

We were repairing a water main. They had a bucket down there to protect me. It caved in, and they yelled, and I just stood up in the bucket and the hole collapsed around me. I was okay. They hauled me up in the bucket to make sure I was okay, and we went back to it.”

It was 10 times harder than when the beds were dry. I remember to some customers I had to say, ‘we just can›t do this right now’ and they were pushing for their water and gas. I am pretty ballsy, and there were definitely times where I did it anyway. When you are around this long, you have some old customers you have a hard time telling no to.”

In the beginning, Tom had to build his own machines to use this technique. Now these tools and techniques are much more common.

How to improve your

Mental Health

during the holidays and beyond While the holidays are billed as the most wonderful time of the year, they can also be the most stressful.

Between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day, high expectations surrounding the holiday season, as well as loneliness and stress can bring about the “holiday blues” for some people. While these holiday blues are often temporary, for some the feelings can be more serious, especially if they last more than a couple of weeks or trigger anxiety or depression.

In fact, the National Alliance on Mental Illness conducted a survey a few years ago that found 24 percent of people with a diagnosed mental illness find that the holidays make their condition “a lot” worse and 40 percent said their conditions became “somewhat” worse.

With the holiday season here, we talked with Jennifer Cooper, a Licensed and Professional Counselor with SummitStone Health Partners, which is a private, non-profit behavioral health organization that provides prevention, intervention and treatment services in Larimer County.

Here’s a guide on how to handle stress during the holiday season and beyond, and how you can tell the difference between the holiday blues and depression.

Coping with stress during the holidays The first step in developing coping strategies for handling stress is to identify what is causing the stress,

For example, finances are oftentimes a key source of stress during the holidays, she says. “So, we might look at ways to help manage our finances better during this time such as spending cash, not credit; setting a budget and sticking to it; and concretely tracking expenses to avoid overspending,” Cooper says.

Another idea is to plan ahead for next year by setting aside monthly funds to help ease the financial stress when the holidays roll around again next year.

But holiday stress can be more than just financial, and may be linked to emotional triggers, she says.

Here are some of Cooper’s tips to December 2018/January 2019

What you need to know about the new mental health tax

Voters in Larimer County in November passed a mental health tax initiative that will add a .25 percent sales tax in the county to help build, staff and fund a mental health treatment center and drug detox facility just north of Loveland.

The tax is expected to raise $19 million in its first year, and proponents say it will expand and improve mental health and addiction treatment delivered through satellite service options.

“Having Larimer County residents approve the tax for behavioral health services shows that our community recognizes the importance of mental health to our overall wellness,” says Cyndi Dodds, Chief Clinical Officer with SummitStone.

The funding, she says, will help the county fill the gaps that it currently has in mental health and addiction services.

Things are comfortable at A.K.A. Kitchen, located in the former longtime Adelita’s space, but a little quirky.

For instance, rare is the brewpub or grill that doesn’t offers a standard French dip sandwich. A.K.A. dishes a dip but it’s a tweaked and craveable variation called a Pho-French Dip. For the sandwich part, you have brisket, cilantro, sriracha lime mayo and veggies spiced like Vietnamese noodle pho soup on a bun. The beef jus for dipping the sandwich is seasoned with hoisin sauce for a savory take on a classic.

The menu reflects the Loveland restaurant’s name, according to owner Julie Shaffer.

A.K.A. Kitchen opened in August serving breakfast through late night in the former Adelita’s Mexican Restaurant space, an iconic Loveland dining destination for 26 years. The space is completely remodeled with a comfortable contemporary look but will also remind locals of Adelita’s history.

“It’s great to be in business with my son. He worked in restaurants, mainly fine dining, in California for many years and wanted to come home and open a new place,” she said. .

Weekend brunch has been a big deal at A.K.A. Kitchen since the first week the brewpub was open and there’s usually a wait list. “On Saturdays customers like the Bloody Mary bar where you choose your

mix and top the glass off with all sorts of meats, cheese and pickles.

We pour bottomless mimosas and beer-mosas for Sunday brunch,” Shaffer said.

Before the staff heads home to celebrate the holidays they will host a Christmas Eve brunch on December 24th for those last-minute shoppers.

In honor of the new restaurant’s first year, the chefs are teaming up to serve a special four-course tasting menu with beverages from 5 to 10 pm on New Year’s Eve. And, just because this is quirky Colorado, Shaffer says that if it isn’t snowing that night, there will probably be folks sitting out on A.K.A.’s big patio warmed by the firepit and outdoor heaters.

problems because they present a physical challenge that need a solution in order to be climbed. Think of a Rubik’s cube that requires your entire body to solve.”

Since bouldering problems extend only 15 feet from the ground at Wooden Mountain and the floor is draped with a giant cushion to mitigate falls, climbers don’t need a rope harness. “Bouldering is the most accessible form of climbing.

You don’t need to have any previous experience, but it does challenge the physique,” Mann said. “If you practice other sports, bouldering should be a friendly learning curve.”

Bouldering improves strength, body awareness and proprioception, or knowing where one’s body is in space. “You can get in shape and tone all areas of the body,” Lum said. “Mostly, it’s fun and very intellectually stimulating.”

After misbehaving out of boredom in school in seventh grade, a teacher sentenced him to a basic climbing class. “I discovered climbing not only as an activity I loved and found challenging, but I also found a community I could fit into. That community and the physical challenge really did change my life,” he said.

Lum believes kids, and adults, who climb learn wise decision-making.

“There’s no risk assessment through phones and apps, and that leaves kids having a really hard time making decisions,” Lum said. “Climbing, which lets you feel the risk and the balance together, fills that gap in a palpable way.” He added, “Climbing is a beautiful way of learning how to make decisions and how to access risk.

Plus, climbers learn in community.

At 7,000 square feet, Wooden Mountain is housed in an eclectic gym and features kids’ mornings, ladies’ nights, high school evenings, day camps and classes. Lum said, “All ages can climb.

We recently had a 74-year-old man here climbing.” Preschoolers enjoy a climbing wall for tots. “If they can walk, they can probably climb,” Evans said.

First-timers at Wooden Mountain, “regardless of skill and experience, will go through a brief orientation of the gym, our walls, how we recommend to climb and what you need to do in order to have a good time and stay safe,” Mann said. Those new to climbing can rent shoes and should dress in comfortable gym clothes.

Experienced climbers are challenged at Wooden Mountain, with some walls sporting bouldering riddles altered at least every five weeks by experienced setters. Memberships and pay-per-visit plans are available.

Club Loveland: A community hub for newbies, experienced athletes “The New Year is always an exciting time to set new fitness goals,” said Robin Depperschmidt-Williams, general manager at Club Loveland, opening this month. “There is endless amounts of research on the importance of including regular exercise in your day to day. It is an extremely rewarding feeling to set a physical goal and reach it,” in addition to the health benefits, improved strength and toned look.

Exercise is good for the brain, too.

“Physical activity stresses our brains similarly to how it works our muscles.

Neurons break down, then recover and become stronger and more resilient,” said Depperschmidt-Williams, who formerly led fitness therapy for people with dementia and other neurological challenges. “(Exercise) has been proven to improve your mood by releasing specific happy endorphins in the brain,” she said.

Club Loveland members receive a free fitness assessment with a personal trainer to evaluate fitness and establish goals. Depperschmidt-Williams said, “For those that need that little extra push or accountability to stay motivated through the rigor of a new exercise program, we always recommend inviting a personal trainer into your workout.”

One way to positively tip the scales this year is to delineate between “eating good and eating right,” urged Depperschmidt-Williams. “Eating good is when you stop eating fast food and start to eat things that you have been told are good for you, such as fruits and vegetables. Although this is a great step in the right direction, you might not see results that you would if you were to start eating right,” she said. “Eating right is when you are setting a caloric goal, including the right macro-nutrient breakdown to reach that caloric goal.” Depperschmidt-Williams helps members ascertain daily caloric need for body type and activity level.

People love the value of our equipment. By the time we go through everything in our refurbishment process, if a customer can deal with a few scratches or dings here and there, they are getting a great piece of equipment for the value. I have had people ask if certain treadmills are new. We do new running belts and decks on them and they can look just like new.”

Like Depperschmidt-Williams, Van Oene emphasized that regular exercise is merely part of the plan.

weight is two-thirds diet and onethird exercise,” he said. “It’s very important to pay attention to diet.

There are lots of great apps for creating a meal plan that fits your needs.”

Van Oene encouraged burgeoning athletes to determine what suits their schedule. “Most people like to work out first thing in the morning, but that doesn’t fit me personally,” he said. “I typically do my workout late afternoon. Be aware of what works for you personally and do your best to get into that routine. Once you do it for about a month, it will become second nature, and you’ll miss it if you don’t get your workout in.”

He recommended, moreover, that athletes push their workout capacity.

“Start with a 20 minute walk if you need to, just to get going. Walking at four miles an hour with three or four degrees of incline will burn calories, which is the goal.”

Colorado Used Gym Equipment welcomes those wanting to try out equipment to stop in. Van Oene said, “Everything in the store can be used and tested to see if it’s something that feels right.”
