When reflecting and planning for the new year we often think of our physical wellbeing, but mental health is just as much a part of wellness as physical health is. We can easily fall into bad habits and thought patterns without realizing it and that only makes it more difficult to process the rest. This year, prioritize a little self-care in your routine, whatever that may look like and see if everything else falls into place more easily.

For some of us, self-care might mean forming new relationships.

As Bill Withers sang, “We all need somebody to lean on,” and that’s one thing that hasn’t changed. In an increasingly isolated world, we have some thoughts on finding some common ground with others.

In 2010, 19 year old Becca lost her life in a tragic accident. Now, the Because of Becca Foundation strives to give kids and families the opportunity to live every moment to its fullest, as Becca did, by raising funds for youth sports organizations and camps. The annual Leftover Turkey Trot 5K was held at Roger’s Grove on November 30.

Hypnotherapy saves lives Eager to renounce 45 years of smoking two packs of cigarettes a day, Bruce Plasket, a former Daily TimesCall reporter who retired from media in 2005, first dabbled in hypnotherapy while covering the JonBenet Ramsey case. Yet the so-called hypnotherapy session “turned out to be phony scam,” he recalled, “and I ended up buying a carton of smokes on the way back from the session.” A few years later Plasket contacted Rachel Mullis Koenigsberg, a certified hypnotherapist with more than 20 years LongmontMagazine.com

Recognized since 1958 by the American Medical Association as a viable treatment, hypnotherapy is “considered an aid to psychotherapy because the hypnotic state allows people to explore painful thoughts, feelings and memories they might have hidden from their conscious minds,” Koenigsberg said. “It can also help people change perceptions and sensations.” Koenigsberg starts a session with discussion and deep breathing. Then, she explained, “I have them follow my voice as I take them into a guided deep trance relaxation and address the reason they are here to see me. It is a peaceful yet powerful process.”

Cole C., a client with Koenigsberg for 12 years, commutes from Aurora to Longmont for sessions at Healthy Thoughts Hypnosis. She said, “The hypnosis sessions I experience with (Koenigsberg) help me to calm my body and focus my mind, and they are both enlightening and enjoyable to me.” Koenigsberg and Cole work together on “staying optimistic, managing active anxiety and depression, releasing stress, maintaining a calm mind, increasing self-esteem and openly receiving joy,” Cole said.

Koenigsberg has helped a woman confined to a wheelchair lose more than 100 pounds with the help of hypnosis and has guided numerous pre-surgery clients. Koenigsberg said, “I worked with a woman who had a tumor in her abdomen and was preparing for surgery to have it removed.

We did a couple of sessions to prepare her mentally and emotionally for the surgery and for rapid healing afterwards. The surgeon removed a football- sized tumor, and they were amazed by her ability to be so relaxed before, during and after the surgery.”

Therapy as a journey Traditional, time-tested therapy likewise changes and saves lives. Lisa Mikesell and Lynn Braunagel, who co-own Journey Counseling Center in Longmont, help clients “take responsibility for their own happiness and liberty,” Mikesell said. A licensed social worker and certified addictions counselor, she works with residents from Boulder County struggling with substance abuse and mental health disorders.

After one of Mikesell’s clients was jailed due to continued drug abuse, the client decided “to take care of their own inner child,” Mikesell said.

With Journey Counseling Center’s guidance, the client determined to care for herself “inside out and outside in.” When the client was released, she stayed clean, started exercising, joined a support group and started eating more healthfully.

Since “the blues” and clinical depression sometimes spike after the holidays, Journey Counseling Center encourage clients, again, to tackle mental fitness from the outside and inside. Outside strategies include exercising, soaking up sunshine, eating frequent meals composed of healthy protein, fruit and vegetables, keeping regular sleeping hours and seeing a medical doctor for annual checkups.

Mikesell noted, “Physical ailments that can contribute to depression include diabetes, low thyroid, low vitamin D and hormonal abnormalities.” Focusing on the inside means “mindfulness of self and strategies to balance moods.” She said, “Mindfulness strategies include yoga, positive LongmontMagazine.com

thoughts, cognitive behavior therapy, tending the needs of the inner child and increasing insight through talk therapy.”

Avoiding alcohol is especially crucial for those with depression. Mikesell said, “Alcohol is a depressant. If we drink alcohol because we are depressed, we are in danger of increasing our depression.” Instead, she said, “The truth is we are each in charge of our own happiness. No one outside of ourselves can achieve happiness for us. Happiness is made up of positive social support, meaningful work, inner control, optimism and spiritual practice. Happiness is resolving early childhood difficulties through understanding, forgiving and stopping the cycle by doing something different.”

Braunagel said, “Anger held in becomes depression. So if you find yourself depressed, you should ask yourself, ‘Am I also angry?’ It is crucial to know that anger is a secondary emotion, which feeds on the fuel of fear, pain and unmet expectations.”

She concluded, “The earlier you become aware of the downward spiral the better. Typically, eating and sleeping patterns will change first, or (one will) begin to isolate and withdraw from activities and relationships.”

As with Koenigsberg, Mikesell and Braunagel believe the crux of selfcare is nurturing oneself and others.

Mikesell said, “A happy home is the foundation of your life. Be kind, use kind words. Never drink for emotional reasons.”

Find humor in the moment Laughter is an excellent way to beat depression. Watch a funny movie or attend a comedy club. Laughing at the madness of things can be helpful.

Shift your perspective Step back for a moment from what you are feeling and try to observe as a bystander.

Be flexible People often get depressed when their expectations are not met. Being flexible helps you realize that sometimes things turn out differently.

Keep yourself occupied Organize your room or office, volunteer at an animal shelter, call a friend or meditate.

Cultivate gratitude Remember little joys that have shown up in your life.

By SHELLEY WIDHALM for LONGMONT MAGAZINE Making friends as an adult can prove difficult, especially for those who work at home or become absorbed in social media and gaining Likes and Shares, trading in three-dimensional life for virtual relationships.

Statistics show that a high number of adults face what is called the “loneliness epidemic,” where they feel lonely, lack companionship or are isolated. A 2018 survey from “The Economist” and the Kaiser Family Foundation found that 22% of American adults are lonely and isolated, while a 2018 survey from the Cigna health insurance company shows that 46% of Americans feel alone, 47% feel left out and 54% believe that no one knows them well.

“I try to tell folks that the physical and mental consequences are greater than we think for both loneliness and social isolation,” Walker said.

Research indicates that those consequences can include depression, anxiety, high blood pressure and chronic inflammation trigged by cellular change, potentially leading to heart disease, stroke and Alzheimer’s disease. “The opposite of loneliness is community, maybe that’s one way to look at it,” said Dixon Dick, cofounder and co-executive director of CoSolve Coworking, a coworking space that opened in Longmont in 2016, and cofounder of TinkerMill, a maker space, also in Longmont. “When you’re lonely, do you have friends?

Mill to share the available resources, but they soon formed interest groups and Meetups that became more social, Dick said, adding that he’s seen Meetups also come out of coworking spaces, as well as the events there that are open to the public.

“People are somehow falling into loneliness without realizing it,” Dick said. “Online friendship is not the same thing as seeing someone in the flesh (where) all of you is there. …

Social media might be separating us, but it also is used to create communities where you physically can go.”

Facebook users use the platform to create groups and facilitate meeting in public, and a number of “friendship” apps work like online dating by giving people a way to get out and make friends. They include Meetups for local interest-based get-togethers, Atleto for sporting interests and

Head to the Library for Options

Going to the local library is another way to meet people, as is joining a club or group, such as a book club, Moms group or a group focused on learning a language, writing, quilting, running, walking or doing yoga. The idea is to find a hobby or interest and meet potential friends through the shared experiences.

“We are a really good vehicle for combating loneliness,” said Teresa Myers, coordinator of marketing and communications for the Longmont Public Library. “We have an awful lot of programs for adults.”

The library offers a bimonthly book group that meets at two different times, one during the day and the second in the evening, and each group picks its own fiction and nonfiction books. A new nonfiction book group, Read for Your Health, will start up in January and meet every other month to focus on health-related issues.

Another group, ThriftU, engages in different crafts each month, using upcycled thrift store finds to do the creating, not requiring any specific crafting skills. There’s also the Longmont Ukulele Club, Anime-niacs: Anime Club for Adults, Genealogy Basics with the Longmont Genealogy Society and a writers group that all meet at the library.

“There’s lots of chatting going on, so people can get to know each other,” Myers said. “It’s face to face, so you can get to know other people.”

and those participating need to be at least 21. Mostly consisting of millennials and Generation Xers, the group discusses books and book trivia over a beer, led by a librarian.

“There is such a variety that hopefully most folks can find something that connects with them,” said Michele Waite, manager of senior services at the Longmont Senior Center, which tallies an average of 10,000 visits a month.

“One of the other things that we see a lot of here, we have people who come here, particularly older folks, they come in here every day, look at the computer, read the newspaper—it’s part of their routine. It’s their chance to get out and interact,” Myers said.

Or Try the Senior Center For older adults, the Longmont Senior Center offers a long list of programs that includes lifelong learning classes on a variety of subjects from art to computers and drop-in programs, groups and clubs that meet around common interests. Resource specialists at the senior center can provide information on services such as the Respite Companion Volunteer Program for in-home friendly visits, transportation options and home delivery programs such as Meals on Wheels and library books that includes companionship.

Brandy Queen, senior counselor and senior resource education coordinator at the senior center, points out the difference between loneliness and isolation. Loneliness isn’t something that is chosen but can become the result of losing a partner, family members being absent or far away, having health problems and friends January/February 2020

else at another time or with another person.

“Don’t take it personally,” Queen said. “There are a lot of people open to making new friends.”

Waite and the staff at the senior center have seen many relationships develop there, she said.

“It’s possible for folks who are willing to invest themselves. … That’s true at any age,” Waite said. “It’s about taking that step and trying oftentimes more than once to reach out and find people with common ideas, common interests and common values.”

Some groups, like book clubs, bridge the age gap making it easy for anyone to get involved.

“A lot of our older adults identified from conversations sometimes choose to be alone and like that,” Queen said, adding that for others, “it is an isolation that is not chosen.

They want to have connections in their life that they do not have.”

Older adults may not have a natural network in place, such as from school, a job or being part of a group in their community, Queen said. They can build a network by going to a recreation or senior center to learn about the local offerings and to start meeting people, though it can take

more effort, she said.

Queen advises taking baby steps by picking one or two activities and not immediately building a full social calendar every day of the week. After the activities become comfortable, more can be added, she said.

Walker recommends getting some form of exercise for the physical and mental health benefits and finding a hobby to get out of the house and keep the mind busy and body moving. Other ways to reach out include writing a letter, making a phone call and asking friends and family for help if needed, finding that many are willing to do so, she said.

The activities are a way to reach out, though Queen hears a common complaint that people already have full lives and do not have time for new friends, she said. Her advice is to try a second time by suggesting something

NEW PROGRAM HELPS PEOPLE QUIT TOBACCO, NICOTINE

Using multiple tools and counseling increase success GREELEY, Colo.—The Tobacco and Nicotine Recovery program at Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center at North Colorado Medical Center and McKee Medical Center is improving the odds for patients who want to quit tobacco and nicotine.

Clinical health psychologist Monica Foster, PhD, offers the program at Banner Health Clinic specializing in pulmonology in partnership with Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center at NCMC and McKee. Dr. Foster said the program, developed by the Behavioral Science department of MD Anderson Cancer Center, succeeds because it uses many approaches rather than one tactic.

Research has shown that a person trying to quit “cold turkey” has a 7 percent chance of remaining absti16 LONGMONT MAGAZINE

nent. If that person tries products, like replacement patches, gums or lozenges, medication and behavioral therapy, the odds increase to 45 percent to 50 percent, as shown in a recent JAMA Network Open study on MD Anderson’s Tobacco Treatment Program.

“To help someone recover completely from tobacco and nicotine, the program has to be designed to be personal.

It has to be for the long term,” Dr. Foster said. “This is not a workshop.

This is multifaceted and intensive.”

The first step is to look at a person’s readiness to quit. What are their patterns and history with tobacco and nicotine? This helps to create a customized plan to reduce or quit tobacco use.

“You can make such a difference in people’s lives through health changes, when you see a person have that ‘aha’ moment and really commit to making a difficult choice for the benefit of their long-term health, it is empowering,” Dr. Foster said.

Why is it so hard to change our habits? We caught up with Longmontbased Hypnotic Coach Zolita Grant, M.S. to find out what gives. Grant teaches a New Year’s Resolution workshop that helps people unravel the mental minutia that holds them back from achieving their goals. She says the big reason why people don’t hit their goals has more to do with their mental blocks.

After the group session, her clients can decide if they want more sessions that include coaching. When people work with a coach, Grant said it helps add accountability. It also helps to attach dates to goals because now you are working toward something more concrete.

But it’s not always about winning. Neary reminds us that failure is part of life—and there is no escaping it.

“If starting out, you don’t need to take a class five times a week and feel muscle sore,” Stohler said. “Let your body recover—you need to see how sore you feel … if you’re sore the next day, don’t work the same muscles.”

“Failure is necessary—it will happen. Move on,” she said.

During classes, Neary gives pep talks about how to handle failure and why it’s so important to never quit on your goals and dreams—especially three weeks into the new year.

“Don’t look at a failure as one and done. There’s no end to failure, if you keep moving, it’s a process and you will get past those points of failure,” Neary said.

INGREDIENTS: 2 Eggs 1 teaspoon water Fresh veggies, meats and cheeses of your choice INSTRUCTIONS The secret to a perfect omelette is starting out with a heated pan and oil of your choice.

The temperature should be hot enough that a drop of water will sizzle when splashed into the pan. If the oil is too hot, then your egg will brown all around the edges before the interior is cooked.

Whisk water into eggs thoroughly to get the best results. The added water will create steam when the egg mixture hits the hot pan causing the eggs to rise beautifully.

As you see the edges start to cook, pull the cooked egg to the middle and let the loose egg flow to the outer edges. As the egg cooks throughout then pull up the cooked edges and tilt your pan to let the uncooked egg on the top flow underneath the cooked egg.

As this uncooked egg hits the pan over and over again the water will puff up the egg to create a very fluffy omelette. Without this step, you will end up with a very flat and rubbery omelette.

The other secret is to have the filling ingredients hot and ready to put right onto the omelette as you plate it so that the omelette does not have time to deflate.

The timing may sound difficult, but once you do it a few times it will become easy and the reward of presenting this to family and friendss is in all the oohs and ahhs you will get!

To keep it healthy, choose veggies or tofu or add potatoes and serve up with veggie hash. For additional flavor, add a cheese, chile or sauce — you have many delightful options.

“We’ve added language that specifically references servers and their role in encouraging healthy beverages,” says Tessa Hale, Healthy Beverage and Food Advisor at Boulder County Public Health and a leader of the Healthy Longmont Coalition which has been the driving force behind

Composed of committed community members and representatives of numerous organizations including the American Heart Association, Dental Aid, Salud Family Health Centers, Ollin Farms and more, the Healthy Longmont Coalition formally began working together in September of 2018. Prior to that time, a growing movement was building through numerous grassroots efforts, aimed at providing education for children and families and developing an environment where the healthy choice is the easy choice. “We aren’t about eliminating choice,” Hale says, emphasizing that parents will continue to have a full menu to choose from. “This is about empowering healthy choices for life through a supportive environment.”

We know what you’re thinking: isn’t Boulder County the healthiest county in the healthiest state? The truth is, despite our active, healthy image, we are in the midst of a growing Public Health crisis. In fact, on October 15, 2019, Boulder County

Board of Health passed a resolution declaring children experiencing overweight and obesity an epidemic. “Children in my son and daughter’s generation—those born after 2000—have a one-in-three chance of developing type 2 diabetes,” says Christina Edstrom, co-founder of St. Vrain Healthy Kids, a parent group which has worked closely with schools and the community over the past several years to promote children’s health. “Shockingly, while Colorado ranks number one for having for having the lowest rates of obesity and overweight for adults, we’re ranked thirteen in the nation for children. Even within Colorado, 13 counties are ahead of ours for having lower rates of childhood obesity.”

With such a healthy ethos, how can childhood obesity and overweight be reaching such disturbing proportions? It doesn’t all come down to dancing sugarplums. When it comes to healthy habits, the most earnest efforts can be challenged by the environment throughout the year.

One big culprit: the prevalence of sugary drinks served to children.

“We see the impact of sugary drink consumption on children in our clinics on a daily basis,” says Ernest Duff, Executive Director of Dental Aid. “Tooth decay is the most common disease of childhood: five times more common than asthma. The impact is such that, given years of 30 LONGMONT MAGAZINE

Since making the changes, Gafner adds, the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. “We recognize that parents want to be the decisionmakers for what their kids eat and drink, and we want to support their efforts to make healthy choices,” he says. “If a parent chooses to give a child a sugary drink, we want that to be a conscious decision and not in response to the only options they see on our menu.”

Ways to keep relationships fulfilling in the face of

By JOHN TEEHAN for LONGMONT MAGAZINE A diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia can be devastating to a loving relationship.

The stress, the fear, the uncertainty and general rigors of this new daily life can be daunting—throwing up barriers between people where none had existed before. One of the biggest obstacles people experience with this new and unwelcome change in life is the challenges it presents toward maintaining the same emotional connection people have with each other.

Keeping a healthy, loving relationship thriving seems like a hopeless cause.

But it doesn’t have to.

Take a breath. Look at the larger picture and take things day by day.

Seek understanding not just between caregiver and partner, but friends and family as well. Break down some of the barriers in communication and work to eliminate the unfair stigma attached to dementia.

It can be done and life can have as much meaning as it has always had.

Possibly even more.

Understand that relationships will likely change

It’s not unusual for caregiving partners to experience grief regarding the changes in their relationship. This is not being selfish. When a partner’s cognitive abilities become impaired, maintaining the emotional or physical intimacy that was once enjoyed becomes a significant challenge.

Changes in memory, perception, and attention span can make many previously enjoyed activities difficult for dementia patients. Partners may have to adapt their own activities in order to accommodate their partners’ ability to participate. Because dementia can affect communication skills, dementia sufferers may no longer be able to share personal or intimate conversation the same way as before, and unintentionally create distance with their partners, friends, and family.

All of this can ultimately impact intimacy. With changes in mood, behavior, and ability to communicate effectively, personal relationships can be put under great strain. Partners of dementia patients can also be deeply affected by these changes with feelings of increased loneliness and a wish for things to go back to where they were.

Solace can be found in expressing affection Showing affection is essential to our well-being, and cognitive decline does not lessen the need for closeness.

While there are now some different ways to be acknowledged, dementia patients seek and thrive in closeness.

Partners need to adapt to their loved one’s changes to allow for loving expressions.

Very often, people suffering from Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia experience changes in sexual drive. Depression often associated with cognitive impairment, along with medications or physical illness, January/February 2020

can reduce interest in sex. The demands of caregiving—moving from intimate partner to caregiver—can also result in caregivers experiencing a waning of sexual desire. This is not something caregiving partners should be distressed about. Rather, they could take this as an opportunity to explore new ways to connect with each other.

Joleen McGee of the Life Care Center of Longmont offers this advice: “Everyone’s experience with Alzheimers or dementia is going to be different. Take things day by day. Understand, too, that what is happening to your partner is not a choice, but part of the disease process.”

Taking on a new role A friend or loved one suffering from Alzheimer’s disease or some other form of dementia may find it difficult to perform certain tasks such as handling finances, household chores, legal matters, and personal hygiene and maintenance. Even making small decisions may, at times, feel January/February 2020

overwhelming for those suffering cognitive impairment.

There are ways caregivers can help.

One particularly useful, but commonly overlooked way is to locate financial and legal documents such as life insurance policies, property deeds, and retirement accounts.

There will come a time when knowing where these documents are and what they mean that will help everyone involved when it comes to making certain life decisions and figuring out what options exist. If these documents aren’t readily accessible, caregivers should ask for help from other friends and family. They could also consult with professionals or community resources for help as needed.

Dealing with family and friends

Sadly, it’s not uncommon to find that some friends and family may pull back from their previous relationship with the caregiver or their partner, making both feel socially isolated.

Many people are unsure about what to do or what to say, and this causes hesitation in spending as much time socializing as they had previously. Some people have trouble, consciously or unconsciously, understanding how dementia can cause changes in behavior and be illequipped with facing those changes.

When this happens—or before this has a chance to happen—caregivers should make an effort to reach out to family and friends and explain that while Alzheimer’s disease or other dementia may have changed their lives in some ways, they very much value their friends and families’ love and support.

Caregivers should take the time to inform a few friends and family members as to what physical or emotional changes are being experienced by the person with dementia, then Invite a few over. Getting past misconceptions over cognitive dysfunction serves an additional purpose. By overcoming the stigma often attached to Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia, people may become more willing to seek medical help when problem symptoms first appear.

Through patience, love, empathy, and education, caring for a loved one suffering dementia does not mean the end of a relationship. While there will be trials and hardships, there are also opportunities to strengthen bonds by discovering new ways of interacting and meeting challenges together.

Flower Bin

By LUCY EWING for LONGMONT MAGAZINE It started in 1971 as one ramshackle, abandoned greenhouse on a two-lane country highway, adopted by a young carnation grower named Don Weakland, a recent arrival in Longmont’s town of 23,000. Now, The Flower Bin Garden Center and Nursery covers more than four acres of greenhouses at the corner of Sunset Street and Nelson Road. It is a Longmont landmark by which directions are given and where generations work and shop. It’s still a family business, and

by Weakland’s estimation, that family includes 17 longtime employees and 10,000 regular customers among Longmont’s burgeoning population of 96,000.

“We know their children and grandchildren now,” says Weakland, breaking into a grin. “It’s what makes it so much fun. They will come in and say, ‘I used to come here when I was a 38 LONGMONT MAGAZINE

shipments of soil, seed, fertilizer, pots and tools. They also help diagnose ailing plants or sod carried in by customers. Oftentimes it’s a watering challenge that can be improved by soil amendments. Other times, insects or diseases are the culprits. The solutions are close at hand.

The Flower Bin’s employees start young and stay long, averaging more

than 20 years of service, because they love growing plants and the atmosphere cultivated by the Weaklands.

“We also have great customers,” says Frizzle. “We know them by name.”

Back in the 70’s, fierce winds in Longmont wreaked havoc on The Flower Bin’s greenhouses, but the Weaklands recouped, and now son Michael, nursery manager, provides full-time construction work on the property, raising giant greenhouses and pago-

When she was diagnosed with cervical cancer in 2016, Tracy Jiminez didn’t know anything about the disease or the undetected HPV (human papillomavirus) infection that caused it. To her, the not-knowing was the worse thing about it. Now Jiminez is on a mission to educate the public about HPV and cervical cancer, the fourth most common cancer among women worldwide, with 12,000 cases and 4,000 deaths every year in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. (CDC) Jiminez attended a Cervivor conference on cervical cancer in Chicago in September, 2019, becoming further armed as an ambassador to educate and empower people about it.

“It was very life-changing for me, because I learned so much. I got to 42 LONGMONT MAGAZINE

The lower back and leg pain that Jiminez was experiencing before her diagnosis were initially considered sciatic nerve pain. When the pain became more intense and she experienced abnormal discharge, a CAT scan revealed an 8-centimeter (approximately 3-inch) large tumor on her cervix, which connects the vagina (birth canal) to the uterus (womb).

Lower back and pelvic pain are symptomatic of cervical cancer, and Jiminez wishes the connection had been made earlier in her case. “Today I want to teach everyone about HPV, cervical cancer and the other cancers that HPV can cause. I want to encourage all parents of boys and girls to make sure their kids get the HPV vaccine. I also want to educate women of all ages to keep up with their annual gynecological exams,” says Jiminez.

Most cervical cancers are caused by HPV, the most common sexuallytransmitted disease. Cervical cancer is most often diagnosed between the ages of 35 and 44. A Pap/HPV co-test is recommended for women 30 and older. Most sexually active individuals have HPV at some point in their lifetimes, and 20 million people are currently infected with the disease, according to the Centers for Disease Control. HPV infections are usually harmless and are cleared by the body, However, different types of HPV are linked to a woman’s risk for cervical cancer. HPV can also cause cancers to other parts of the reproductive system, male and female, as well as the anus and throat.

According to cervivor.org, mortality (death) rates of cervical cancer among Hispanic women are 50 percent higher than those of nonHispanic women, and incidence rates among Hispanics are twice the rates of non-Hispanic women. Poverty and limited access to health screenings account for higher incidences as well.

Because cervical cancer is typically caused by HPV, the simplest way to prevent cervical cancer is to prevent HPV infection in the first place.

Since 2006, an effective HPV vaccination has been used. The HPV vaccine helps the immune system create an antibody response that protects against the infection.

The CDC recommends all boys and girls get the multi-dose vaccination at 11 or 12 years old. At this age, it pro-

vides a stronger immune response, and provides full protection against HPV long before becoming sexually active. The vaccine is targeted most specifically up to age 26, but individuals up to 45 years of age may receive the vaccination after consulting with their doctors about their risks for HPV.

Jiminez’s story is featured at cervivor. org and in local coverage. Her doctor at the Rocky Mountain Cancer Center at Longmont United Hospital has Jiminez’s pamphlet and business cards in her office. She has recently linked up with a survivor’s network in Colorado Springs and hopes to branch out state-wide.

In her work to educate citizens about HPV and cervical cancer, Jiminez says she frequently encounters people who are afraid of the vaccination, sometimes because of “misinformation they read on the internet,” she says. “But they want to keep their kids safe. It’s as important for boys as it is for girls to get the vaccinations, and they are as important as other vaccinations they receive.” Jiminez was happy to see her daughter start the series of vaccinations for her grandson.

“I love the feeling I get knowing that I am getting the word out, because you never want anyone to go through what I did,” says Jiminez.

TUNES Josiah Johnson has recently measured his life in chunks, with the last four-year “chunk” a time of healing and recovery from what came before, and a return to writing and performing music. He has only started performing again in the last year and a half, after taking a break from the nationally-touring band, “The Head and the Heart,” four years ago. He will perform at the first weekend of Winter Folk in February.

A Greeley-based band that has become well-known in the area, The Burroughs, is working on a lot of new music for 2020, and plan to debut some of it at the Winter Walkabout, another winter festival happening in February.

“Once we knew that the Longmont market could handle more nationally-touring musicians, we started to think about other events,” Albright said. “We sold out 10 of the 12 shows (for Strings and Stories).”

Winter Folk will consist of nationally-touring artists over four weekends at “The St. Vrain” venue in Longmont, which opened a couple years ago. “It’s a luxury wedding venue with exposed brick, wood beams, fancy suede leather couches, secret rooms that have foosball and darts,” Albright said.

Music and food will be on the top floor of the two-story building, and a photography expo will be on the bottom floor.

The venue is usually booked for most of the year, but February is a down time for them and Albright January/February 2020

Three to four bands or solo musicians will play each night. The music falls under the umbrella of folk and will encompass bluegrass, Indy, soul and more. Tickets will include general standing admission or VIP seating. Food will be provided by Sugar Pine Catering.

“The first weekend we have Josiah Johnson. He’s releasing a solo album soon so that’ll be a good show, too,” Albright said.

Nights will end by 10:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 9:30 p.m. Sunday.

Albright said that’s for people like him (in his 40s with a one-year-old) who don’t want to stay out all night but get home at a reasonable hour.

“I’ve used everything I can to help myself feel better,” Johnson said.

ultimately drugs that were the reason why he finally reached a point where he realized something was wrong. It wasn’t an easy place to reach. When things went wrong, it was everyone else’s fault.

“I dug myself a hole and sat there wondering why things weren’t working out,” Johnson said. “It’s more common than you think. (And doesn’t just happen to) people that have addiction problems.”

He said that he identifies as bisexual now and feels that this was part of the problem growing up. He was raised as a Christian, and it took him a long time to understand he could love his whole self. He said that touring was also very tough and grueling. “The people that tour and stay healthy (are) very impressive,” Johnson said. When asked what enabled him to climb out of that “hole,” he said having a strong support system helped. He moved in with his parents for a year, which was humbling in his 30s. And his friends, who did take a step back to not entangle themselves in his lifestyle, stuck by him through supportive phone calls.

nothing. I had a lot of things to work through there,” he said. Life started to make more sense in the last couple of years and he slowly started writing and performing music again. He lives in Oakland, Calif., and goes on mini tours around the U.S. for a couple of weeks at a time.

His music is folk rock with soul elements. He tours with a band of drums, bass, guitar, trumpet and vocals. He sings the music he wrote while recovering and he said it feels wonderful to sing about things he’s been through, having come out the other side.

“My parents have gotten their son back,” Johnson said.

He has done other benefit concerts with Albright from the Future Arts Foundation, and feels connected to the other man since they’ve known each other 10 years and have seen each other grow in many ways. “It’s wonderful to see the way people light up doing the things they love,” Johnson said.

He will tour for about a week and a half in February, with one stop in Colorado at Winter Folk.

The Winter Walkabout Music Showcase

The Winter Walkabout went so well in its first year that the Longmont Downtown Development Authority is bringing it back for a second year on Feb. 1, 2020. “We weren’t sure if there was going to be enough buy-in but we sold out of tickets and heard really positive things from people that attended,” Argys said. “We want to use that momentum going into year two.”

The one-day multi-venue music festival will feature over 50 performances in 17 venues around downtown Longmont, which tops last year’s 12 venues and 35 performances. While visitors won’t be able to hit them all, there should be something for everyone, Argys said.

The restaurants, breweries and bars will feature food and drink deals for ticket holders to the day-long event. And each venue will have a genre theme, like blues, Americana, alternative, jazz, bluegrass, folk, singer/songwriter, tribute bands, cover bands, and more.

“The energy that was downtown last year was almost palpable, people smiling, walking around, people who had never been to Longmont saying how cool it was,” Argys said. Attendees were able to visit businesses they hadn’t been to before, listen to live music and explore downtown Longmont. The one all-inclusive ticket will give visitors access to every show and food and drink deal. Argys said that the concept of the Walkabout is to showcase local talent and that every venue is within walking distance in the downtown creative district. There will be a free shuttle for outlying venues and for people who can’t make the walk.

The shuttle will be provided by Wonder Tours.

“The fact that we’re able to get 52 local performers lined up is a testament to how much talent we have in the Longmont area musically and it’s such an awesome showcase of the talent in the area,” Argys said. “The performers are all from Colorado and the majority are from along the Front Range and Boulder County. There is a strong Longmont presence. “At its core, we’re showcasing local talent that we have here,” Argys said.

Argys said that the Walkabout and other musical events happening here are really putting Longmont on the map as a music destination.

“This (the Winter Walkabout Music Showcase) is going to be a super fun event for Longmont; it’s great this event is starting and bringing music together,” said Bri Harris, co-owner and manager of The Burroughs.

The Greeley-based band performs what they call “Sweaty Soul” music, which Harris said is their own little brand of soul and funk music that get people moving and having a good time. “It’s always a big sweaty party when people come to one of our shows,” she said. “We want the audience to leave feeling better than when they walked in.”

six years ago starting with a trumpet player, Craig Dasarich, and singer, Johnny Burroughs. Harris said it was supposed to be one show, but it went so well that the band started getting inquiries for other shows. The nine-person band of guitars, keyboard, bass, drums and four-piece horn section has traveled all over the Front Range, across Colorado and to many other states. Dasarich went on to graduate school on the east coast, but the core group of players have been together for five years. The name of the band - Johnny’s last name - was Dasarich’s idea.

Harris, an alto saxaphonist, said they’ve been to some great shows, like the Salmon Fest in Alaska and a residency project in the Roosevelt National Forest in Colorado.

They wrote a song inspired by the landscape in the forest, as part of a project to raise awareness of national lands. The Burroughs has also opened for national acts like The Motet at Bohemian Nights New West Fest in Fort Collins and The Main Squeeze at the Bluebird Theater in Denver.
