Sections of wrought iron fencing have been added along Pawnee Avenue this year to match the new gates to the Logan County Fairgrounds that were installed last year. Buildings and Grounds manager Chance Wright said more sections will be installed by the start of the fair; he hopes to have all of the chainlink along Pawnee replaced with wrought iron by 2021.

Brooke Sigmon is from Fleming, Colorado. She is the 18-year-old daughter of Todd and Susan Sigmon, and she would like to thank them for all of their continuous love and support. Brooke graduated with the Fleming High School class of 2019. As a Fleming Wildcat, she was involved in FFA, FBLA, Student Council and a member of the volleyball team. Meet Makayla Motzkus, 2020 MRLC contestant

Makayla Motzkus is a 2020 Miss Rodeo Logan County contestant. She is the 16-year-old daughter of Jim and Rachael Motzkus. Makayla will be a sophomore at Peetz High School this coming year, where she is an active member of the Peetz FFA chapter. During her free time, she enjoys spending time with her horses and dogs. Although Makayla has a true love for animals, her dream is to be a nurse for a neonatal intensive care unit. Meet Natali Boerner, 2019 MRLC Sweetheart candidate
Natali Boerner is running for the 2019 Miss Rodeo Logan County Sweetheart. She is the daughter of Rodney and Regina Boerner of Fleming, Colorado. Natali is currently a sophomore at Fleming High School, where she is involved in basketball, FBLA, the Student Council, FFA, and 4-H. She is a member of the Logan County Livestock Judging Team, and she is an FFA District XVI Officer.

Five participants in 2019 Little Miss pageant The Little Miss program, for girls ages 5-10, offers participants a chance to learn about what it’s like to be rodeo royalty. This year, there are five girls participating as Little Misses: Elizabeth Waller was born in Fort Smith, Arkansas. She has lived in Sterling for five years with her mom, Jennifer Waller, and sister, Carolynn. Elizabeth will be going into the fifth grade this year at Campbell Elementary. Her passions include any and all animals, dance/gymnastics, outdoors and sports. Elizabeth would like to say thank you to community for this wonderful chance to help represent Logan County as Little Miss. Ella Rose Sonnenberg, a Sterling native, is the 9-year-old daughter of Kylan and Jami Sonnenberg. She is enjoying her first year of 4-H. Ella and her market steer, Hotzie, have participated in a few “jackpot shows” and a calf clinic. Ella is looking forward to the Logan County Beef Show. In the fall, Ella will be attending Campbell Elementary. Janda Ommen is the daughter of Theresa and Ron Ommen. The 10year-old lives on a farm in Padroni and attends school in Peetz, Janda
participates in 4-H; her project is market goats. Her hobbies are horseback riding and swimming. She thanks her sponsor Big Iron Auctions for their support and also her parents. Piper Withers is the 9-year-old daughter of Jeneva and Adam Withers. She will be in fourth grade at Campbell Elementary this year. Piper wants to be a veterinarian when she grows up because she loves animals, especially horses and dogs. Livie Ziegler is the 10-year-old daughter of Brian and Danyell Ziegler and big sister to Garrett. She will be attending Campbell Elementary as a fifth grader this fall. She is a very active young lady who enjoys horse riding, cheer, softball, volleyball, basketball, church and 4-H. She likes to get her fingers dirty outside in the garden, taking care of her chickens, baby chicks and three cats, Frankie, Sammy and Daisy. When she isn’t outside you can find her in the kitchen baking cakes. Livie would like to thank her sponsor, Big Iron Auctions, and hopes that everyone enjoys all the fun events at the Logan County Fair!

Trick gun twirler Rider Kiesner will provide some extra entertainment during the 2019 PRCA Rodeo at the Logan County Fair.
Rodeo lovers will find something for everyone, from a PRCA-sponsored, two-night rodeo to extreme bull riding, 4-H’ers on bucking cows and an entire afternoon of team roping. Rodeo committee chairman John Korrey said the two-evening Dick Stull Memorial Rodeo will again honor those in the military and first responders, and the watermelon races,
which were a hit the last two years, will be back. The rodeo performances are scheduled for Aug. 8 and 9 in the Grandstand Arena. Thursday night’s rodeo will be Armed Forces Night, Korrey said, with “Thank you tickets” given to all active duty and veterans of the U.S. military, including reservists and National Guardsmen. “This is our way of saying ‘Thank you for your service,’” Korrey said. Thank-you tickets can be gotten wherever the rodeo tickets are sold. Tickets are on sale now at the Logan County Commissioners office.
“They can show an ID if they have one, but no one will be turned away,” Korrey said. “And we don’t call them free because they’ve already paid for them with their service.” Active duty and retired military personnel have identification cards issued to them. Veterans who didn’t retire from the military can have their driver’s licenses stamped with the word “VETERAN.” Friday’s performance will honor area first responders and thank-you tickets will be issued to members of Logan County fire and police departments. Korrey said rodeo fans will be treated to performances by Rider Kiesner, a trick rider, roper and gun twirler who performs at some of the biggest rodeos in the country. According to his website, Kiesner was given a Will Rodgers trick roping kit for Christmas when he was 9. He would push the living room furniture back and watch instructional videos over and over until he mastered each trick. He started performing locally that next summer. He then began performing in professional rodeos by the time he was 11. Kiesner continues to practice the cowboy skills of trick roping, gun spinning, and whip cracking daily.
Watermelon races will be held both nights as well. The basic format will be the same — watermelons, wheelbarrows, pushers and riders will be involved. Area banks will be invited to participate on Thursday evening and first responders will be invited to enter teams on Friday night. Friday also will be “Tough Enough to Wear Pink” night, with all attendees encouraged to wear pink shirts to promote awareness of the fight against breast cancer. The Stull Memorial Rodeo, sanctioned by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association, is a onego-round, two-performance rodeo. That means all scores from both performances are figured together to determine winners and placers. Rodeo fans are encouraged to plan to attend both performances to see a complete go-round.

The couple’s involvement in the Logan County Fair goes back decades

Giving back to the community is just a way of life for Coy and Bernadette Marick. The couple, owners of
Marick’s ™Waste Disposal, will be honored as Parade Marshals during the Logan County Fair Parade on Aug. 10. The Maricks have been involved in the fair for
decades. Coy was a 4-H leader for more than 30 years and during most of that time he served as swine superintendent for the fair. He was uniquely qualified for the job; he’d shown hogs
as a young 4-H’er and, by his own account, was pretty good at it. “Never had the Grand Champion, but I didn’t do too bad,” he said. Bernadette was involved
in 4-H while she was growing up in Kansas, so when they had children of their own, it was only natural that their kids would be involved. Todd, Joe and Nikki all showed hogs, both in Logan County and at the Crook Fair when animals were still entered. Todd and Joe also won awards for their leathercraft and Nikki became a talented cake decorator, once winning Reserve Grand Champion at the Colorado State Fair. The Maricks still participate actively in the Logan County Fair. Bernadette announces the sheep, lamb, goat and swine shows and helps with weigh-in of the animals at the beginning of the fair. The company always has a float in the annual Crook Fair parade, and their sons, Joe and Todd, are pretty much responsible for keeping that event going from year to year. The Maricks always participate in the 4-H animal sale, sometimes buying animals just to bid the price up a little. Last year they bought the Grand Champion turkey, which is still in the freezer. the Maricks are looking for an opportunity to share the big bird with the community. But the paying back doesn’t end with fairs and 4-H. The Maricks’ contributions to community cover a broad spectrum of service. Coy and Bernadette have help sponsor the Community Fund Gala, July Jamz, Sugar Beet Days and Relay For Life. The Maricks have passed the tradition of community service on to their children. Daughter Nikki is mayor of Crook, and son Joe coaches wrestling at Caliche High School. Todd does occasional work for the town of Crook, such as grading the streets when needed. The company helped sponsor the renovation of the Caliche School gymnasium. And Marick’s Waste Disposal this year granted four $1,000 college scholarships to local high school graduates. Asked why they do so much for others, Coy Marick gave the answer that so often comes from successful business people: “We wouldn’t be here without the support of the community,” he said. “This is just payback for everything they’ve given us.”

Kathryn Lock is proud of her time in 4-H and now she is giving back to the organization that means so much to her, as the 2019-2020 Colorado State 4-H President. Lock was selected as the state president at the Colorado State 4-H Conference, held June 18-21, at Colorado State University. “I was shocked — I started crying,” Lock said about being named state president. “It had been my dream since I was 10 years old, so when they said my name, I was shaking, because my dream was coming true.” The process for being selected state president took a lot of time and dedication. First she had to fill out an application. in front of 300 people. Lock, a member of the High Plains 4-H Club, has been involved in 4-H for eight years now. When she was younger and would go to the fair, she would look at all the projects and with friends involved in 4-H, she knew it was something that she wanted to do. “I like that there’s always something new to try; there’s always new projects to try out,” Lock said. It was at her first 4-H leadership conference that she decided she would make it her goal to some day run for state officer. “I saw these big kids up front and they were so sweet and kind and encouraging and I thought, ‘I want to be on the officer team,’” Lock said. Before aiming for the state officer team, she served as an officer for her 4-H club, as well as the Logan County 4-H Council and just this past year she was the District
1 4-H president. Her work as state 4-H president is already keeping her busy. At the time she was interviewed for this story, she was in New Mexico helping to lead that state’s 4-H conference. The state officer team is asked to put on four conferences throughout the year, they also participate in Ag Day at CSU, which this year is set for Sept. 21; attend the Western National Roundup; and travel the state promoting 4-H and doing community service. Lock will also be attending the Logan County Fair. Over the years she has done just about every family and consumer science project you can think of: foods, cakes, quilting, scrapbooking, home environment, decorate your duds, sewing, photography and visual arts. This year much of her time has been devoted to running for and now serving as state president, but See LOCK, 15

she will still be entering projects in three contest categories at the fair — quilting, global citizenship and leadership. “I’m really excited about it; I really love the fair,” Lock said. While she enjoys doing all of her projects, quilting is probably her favorite and her talent for it shows; last year she took home a Reserve Grand Champion award at the Colorado State Fair for her quilt. She also took home a Grand Champion award in Global Citizenship for “Study of Another Country Senior Division.” Lock has no shortage of things to say about how being involved in 4-H has impacted her life and encourages others to join. “People should join 4-H because it teaches you life skills and how to work with others,” she said, adding that it’s also an opportunity to make friends. Plus, “it teaches kids how to succeed, but also how to fail in a safe, supportive environment.”

MAKERS from page 16 in his footsteps and is now in her sixth year. It’s very much a family enterprise, with the siblings both participating in the swine and beef shows at the county and state fairs. They also both compete in Sterling FFA’s jackpot show, and Jayce shows at Aksarben and National Western Stock Show. Both are also members of the Logan County 4-H Livestock Judging team, and Jayce is on the senior team that qualified to go to the national contest in Kansas City this fall. Jayce, an incoming senior at Ster-
ling High School, is also second vice president on the Logan County 4-H Council, which took him to the state 4-H conference and the leadership development conference, where he learned leadership skills. It was also an opportunity to meet new people and see friends, he said. “It’s a really fun time,” he said. Jalyssa is looking forward to having additional opportunities in 4-H as she enters high school in the fall, and hopes to be as involved as her brother. She has given a demonstration for her club on how to pre-

They also participated in community service projects with their club, helping decorate the Overland Trail Museum for the Christmas season and delivering food baskets for Cooperating Ministry of Logan County. When Jayce joined 4-H, he started with three pigs at the county fair. He loved the experience enough that he began adding more pigs and competing at the state fair. By the time Jalyssa joined, they had 10 pigs. Jayce said favorite memories for him include winning the Junior Swine Showmanship trophy in 2012, and last year winning the Senior
Beef Showmanship. Jalyssa’s favorite 4-H moments include winning the champion white OPB at the state fair swine show and getting to sell her pig in the livestock auction. She also has won Reserve Grand Champion Overall in at the county swine show for the last two years. “That’s been pretty cool to experience,” she said. Both said their experiences with 4-H have taught them some important lessons, key among them responsibility. “Going out every day, twice a day, and feeding and walking and washing the hogs and cattle,”

That requires a strong work ethic, which is also needed to get out and work with the animals so they are ready for the show ring. Leadership, public speaking and community service are also life skills taught through 4-H. Jalyssa said that of the five or six community service projects the Little Britches club does, her favorite is delivering food baskets, because it exposes her to “a totally different lifestyle.” “It’s an eye-opener,” she said. 4-H also provides a lot of family time. The siblings typically spend about four hours each morning with their animals; most evenings they are joined by their parents, Jeff and Janae Maker. And there’s plenty of time for friends at shows and activities, Jayce added.

Both would definitely encourage others to join 4-H, with Jayce noting that the organization offers a lot of options beyond livestock. “It teaches you so many different things, from the leadership skills to going out every day to check your animals,” he said.
“Or just making something, like clothes, or Legos,” Jalyssa added. “There’s so many different activities that you can do for 4-H and so much that you can learn and take away from it,” Jayce continued. “It’s something that you can do as a kid that prepares you

for your future.” As for what that future holds, Jalyssa said she’s had “a couple thoughts” about what she’d like to do with her life, but hasn’t decided yet. Jayce plans to attend Northeastern Junior Col-

The Sterling Lions Club is firing up its grill to celebrate “Stars, Stripes and Summer Nights.” The 67th annual Cowboy Breakfast, the traditional kick off to the Logan County Fair for over six decades, will be held Wednesday, Aug. 7, from 6:30 to 7:30 a.m. at the Sterling Elks Lodge. Breakfast goers will be greeted by Sterling Lions Club members as they flip pancakes on their mega-grill in the cool, early morning in front of the Elks. Patrons will enter the Dome Room, take their choice of delectable breakfast items, and proceed into the
ballroom where they will be seated by Lions Club members. Those needing assistance should look for friends in gold Lions vests ready to help them. As in years past, the menu will include pancakes, scrambled eggs, sausage, juice, milk and coffee. At approximately 7 a.m., those attending will enjoy a special program featuring Lion Jack Annan as Master of Ceremonies and a “welcome” from the Lions president. The group recently signed a recording deal with BMG and released their first new album in two decades to celebrate their 30th Anniversary. Shenandoah premiered the debut single off the album, “Noise,” on SiriusXM and marked their first release to radio in 20 years. The track is produced by Jay DeMarcus of Rascal Flatts and hit the top 30 at radio. The new album, “Reloaded,” was their highest debuting album on the Billboard Chart of their entire career. It also debuted in the Top 15 on the iTunes Charts, which was another first. Shenandoah premiered a brand-new music video on CMT for their latest single, “That’s Where I Grew Up,” featuring fellow country star, Michael Ray. Parade rerouted due to S-curve work
The Logan County Fair Parade is being moved to the north end of Sterling for this year to avoid conflict with road construction along West Main associated with the “S-curve” project. Parade Chair Theresa Baessler told the Logan County Fair Board she’s secured the parade permit from the city, and the new route has been cleared by the Sterling Police Department. The new route is necessary because planned con-
struction along West Main this summer probably won’t be finished before the fair, making it almost impossible to conduct a parade along that route. The construction includes installing medians from Eighth Avenue all the way to the beginning of the S-curve project at Division, Main and West Main. The parade is scheduled to start at 9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 10, with check-in for parade entries starting at 7:30 a.m.
The parade participants will stage in the Broadway Plaza parking lot, proceed west along Broadway to North Third Avenue, then turn north to Elm Street, then northwesterly along Elm to North Seventh Avenue. From there the parade will turn south along Seventh back to Broadway, then proceed east on Broadway to Bengal Boulevard in front of Sterling High School. The parade will disperse in the school parking lot or in the

streets to the south. As of July 12, Baessler said she had 25-30 entries for the 2019 parade. The figure is about the same as last year at the same time; she said the bulk of the parade entries usually come in the last weeks leading up to the fair and during the fair itself. Baessler expectgs the new route will be for one year only and the parade will return to its traditional route into downtown Sterling in 2020.
