Healthy New Year I don’t know about everyone else, but I definitely indulged a bit too much over the holidays. There’s no avoiding it now, its time to get back to healthy routines and practice a little self care.

2018 brought a lot of disruptive life changes for me and I’m sure, many of you as well, but the birth of the new year always seems like the best time for re-evaluating the old and implementing the new.

From joining in the fitness trends of 2019 to using tech to keep us on track at home, where there’s a will, there is a way.

Living in Longmont means there are all sorts of ways to eat healthy, even when dining out and as someone who has lived in other parts of the country where that’s not the case— it’s something to take advantage of.

Being healthy can also mean working on relationships and February is all about the love. Healthy social events like the evening runs at Shoes and Brews are a great way to connect with like minded friends and spend time with the significant other.

Why do I need to check my alignment?

What do I do when my check engine light comes on?

When your vehicle is in alignment your tires wear evenly and will last longer.

Also a properly aligned vehicle will not pull to the left or right, but stay in the center of the lane. Have your alignment checked every 5000 miles, or yearly to protect your tires and stay in the center of the lane.

A red check engine light is a sign of immediate trouble. Pull over to a safe location and call for a tow truck. Take your vehicle to a qualified repair shop that can properly diagnose and repair the problem.

An amber check engine light is a sign that your engine requires attention.

The future of the arts in the United States is not in New York or San Francisco, but in towns like Longmont, where creativity is alive and well—and growing.

According to Salowa Skiredj-Salzer, the new president of the Board of Directors of the Left Hand Artist Group, Longmont artists are flourishing and blooming. “This is the right time and the right place for the amalgamation of creative people involved in the arts,” she said.

“In Longmont people celebrate art, they buy art, they collaborate with each other. It is a very vivacious place to be.”

At the heart of the arts boom is the Left Hand Artist Group, which is undergoing an overhaul in its fifth year. There are over 1,700 local musicians, artists, poets, writers, culinary artists and other creative members. There’s a Board of Direc-

Don Wilson founded the Lefthand Artist Group in 2013. He moved to Longmont as a retired logistics expert, and wanted to do art fulltime. He explained, “All the galleries want a deposit or to be paid to show the art. Then they take 35 percent, and that raises the price of the art. The higher price means there’s less opportunity to sell it, and therefore less opportunity for people to buy art for their home.”

Wilson felt there had to be a better way, so he started moving furniture out of his house and showing his art there. Other artists joined him, until it got too expensive and cumbersome for him to continue being a free in-house gallery.

He was approached by Left Hand Brewing Company to work in logistics. “I said, ‘Oh what the heck, this will give me money for beer and insurance,’” he explained. His new

employers knew he was an artist and allowed him a meeting space and use of the warehouse. They also offered him three pallets of retired beer labels that artists could use in their creations.

Three people came to Don’s first meeting. Don and his artistic friends used those defunct beer labels in their art and created a Label Show that raised $5,000 to donate to the brewing company’s charitable organization. From those humble brewery beginnings, Left Hand Artist Group has grown by quantum leaps. Now over $48,000 has been donated to charities.

Patty Fabian is on the new board and explained the make-up of the group. “The group is definitely Longmont-centric,” she said. “But we’re starting to show in places like Erie, Fort Collins, Loveland and Berthoud. Of the 1,700 members, there are usually about 100 in the monthly meetings. To become a member, you only have to like our Facebook page, Lefthand Artist Group, and you’re in. We are getting our ducks in a row and working with other community groups to help navigate the waters of becoming a not-for-profit organization.”

Spring Fever

Sometime soon after packing the last Christmas ornaments away, and long before the first crocus blooms, I come down with it. The first symptoms range from simple daydreaming to acute frustration every time I scrape snow and ice off my car windows.

In it’s chronic stages, I find myself scratching bits of bark from the stems of trees and shrubs to be sure they’re surviving the winter, or pacing back and forth in the garden, trowel in hand, as if that will wake up my strawberries and shasta daisies a little sooner. Is that a robin I hear?? I don’t have the patience to endure the winter blahs! There must be something I can do!

With a new growing season just around the corner, now is the perfect time to clean up and re-pot house plants that are getting crowded. If roots are poking out the drain holes, or wrapped around and around in the pot, it might appreciate some new territory to grow into. Only go an inch or so larger than the present pot size, or plants will sometimes stay too wet in all that extra soil.

Seeds are a fun and inexpensive way to try new plants, or to start your own favorites early. Flowers and vegetables will bloom much sooner when started early indoors. We have seed starting supplies and of course millions of seeds!

Try something new!!! Maybe some everlastings for dried arrangements, or herbs to spice up summer salads, or giant pumpkins, or….. Have fun!

many different artists and looking for what we can bring to make the group more solid. We know there is funding available for not-for-profits, and there are other groups we can collaborate with. We are looking to create lasting art projects and events, and we want to get a permanent place where we can show, meet and even have classes. We want to create bridges through creativity with children in schools and so many other different possibilities. We want to make a group that lasts whether any of us are part of it or not.”

Salowa said one of the impacts the group can have is by meeting in a different brewery every First Sunday of the month. “It makes a big impact to the businesses to have 75-100 people in their place on a Sunday at noon. We are re-establishing our relationship with the community as much as we can.” The monthly meeting place is listed on the Facebook page and everyone is invited.

and has gone to almost all of the meetings and events. “I like that we’re community-oriented and everybody helps everybody else. We support each other by buying each other’s art and joining in collaborations. Sometimes there’ll be musicians playing and there are even local food truck vendors in the group. I just think it’s a great opportunity for artists to get to know other artists, to be able to create networking. The musicians are getting exposed to each other and making music with each other in ways they may not have known otherwise.”

One of Don’s ideas was to make Longmont a music town. “Musicians weren’t communicating or working with each other when we started. There were only a few gigs and the musicians didn’t want to lose a gig to anyone else. Now because of the group they are working together, new bands are being created and some musicians are playing in three or four bands.”

For the first time since 2013, Don isn’t heading Left Hand Artist Group. “I stepped down from running the group three months ago,” he said. “For five years this group has consumed my life, and I need to get my life back and make some of my own art. The new board wants to find their own space and develop a unique group. The basic thing, though, is that everyone supports each other.”

A few final tips? Set reasonable goals! Remember, safe weight loss is 1 to 2 pounds per week. You won’t be the first person to use the mullet analogy to describe the store: Business in the front, party in the back.

The concept is the brainchild of three friends who ran track and cross country together at CSU while enjoying the embarrassment of riches that is Fort Collins’ craft beer culture.

For Ashlee Anderson (née Velez), Colin Anderson, and Dave Zakavec, meeting up for a beer after a run was standard. In fact, it was while running one day that Colin speculated that Longmont could be a good place to open a business that offers running shoes and expertise up front and a beer worth savoring out back. And

that’s exactly what they did in July 2014. Along with two more partners, Roger Anderson (Colin’s dad and the company brewer) and Mike Donohoe, with their respective spouses helping in many ways, the Shoes & Brews team has accomplished something totally unique in their business model and their love for this community. Along the way, they’ve made running fun for everyone.

Each member of the close-knit ownership team brings unique strengths and opinions to the table. They were warned early on that getting into business with friends and family can be disastrous, but Ashlee, also the store manager, considers herself lucky to work with a team that is in-

vested in the community and each other. “Combining shoes and beer might not make sense to everyone,” she says. “But our question was why can’t we bring these two communities together and make running culture more social and open?”

“Longmont has seen a change in the past five years,” Ashlee adds. “We used to spend a lot of time going to Boulder for races or shoes, and now there’s such a great sense of community here. The races and social runs we put on bring people together. Shoes & Brews is a community hub.”

On the Brews side, the company’s taproom is completely unique to Longmont. Roger Anderson brews beer on a single barrel all electric system. The taproom has 20 taps, generally with 16 guest taps and two to four Shoes & Brews originals. Most of the beer they’re serving isn’t found anywhere 40 LONGMONT MAGAZINE

Thursday Night Social Run

This familyfavorite event has been going strong since the week the business opened four and a half years ago. Rain or shine, snow or clear skies, the Thursday night social run happens weekly at 6 p.m. (unless it falls on a holiday, in which case they’re closed).

The run itself is an “out and back” that heads west on the St. Vrain Greenway. Eventually, the hope is to be able to run east as well, but construction currently prevents that. Landmarks to look out for are marked on the trail, which minimizes guesswork if you just want to get out there for a mile or two and turn around. run a 6-minute mile and others run a 14. There’s a huge range in age and ability, which proves how true it is that running can become a passion at any point in someone’s life.

The run is free, and sometimes vendors are there with demo shoes to try on the run with no obligation. When you get back to Shoes & Brews, drinks are discounted and some awesome giveaways are a safe bet. Especially on nights when you just want to be cozy on your couch, knowing that 60 other people will be out there running is a great motivator!

when compared to recent Gallop data. Health IQ, a vegan advocacy group reported that in 2009, only .5 percent of the U.S. population consumed a vegan diet.

Plant-based eating is more than the it thing. Rumor has it that plant-loving vegetarians and their vegan counterparts are taking over. Just kidding.

According to a 2018 Gallup poll, only 5 percent of Americans eat vegetarian diets, while 3 percent ditch the dairy and meat products altogether and call themselves vegans. Turns out, veganism is growing slightly,

There are several types of vegetarians, according to Vegetarian-nation, a group that offers vegetarian and vegan information. Lacto-vegetarians do not consume red or white meat, fish, fowl or eggs—they do eat dairy products like cheese and milk.

Ovo-vegetarians also do not eat any of these meats, no dairy products,

but may consume eggs. Vegans eat no meat or animal byproducts, like eggs, dairy and honey.

Despite some growth in vegetarian style eating, low numbers suggest that the plant-based eating craze is not as big as one might think. The question is—did Gallup forgot to survey foodies from Boulder and Weld counties?

Because after talking to local dining establishments, they’re reporting a healthy fan base.

After talking to Restaurant Manager Jon Lee, with Next Door American Eatery, in Longmont, about 40 percent of his customers order vegetarian dishes, while about 10 percent opt for vegan or non-dairy menu items.

There a few standout vegetarian and vegan menu options, he said.

Even though it’s not made in-house, Lee said the Impossible Burger is one of their main draws at the restaurant.

“It’s a vegan burger that uses plant proteins. It’s a mixture of wheat, potato and soy proteins,” he said.

For a plant-based burger, he said it tastes pretty good. And the customers agree.

“People say the texture and taste is good, but others say it tastes too much like meat. They’ve done too good of a job that it pushes some people outside they’re comfort zone because it reminds them too much January/February 2019

of an animal,” Lee said.

Loaded with a roasted veggie combo of mushrooms and onions and topped off with dairy free Thousand Island sauce, Lee said it’s a popular among vegans. (The vegetarian option comes with cheese and a pickle.)

Next up on the menu—Southwest Roasted Veggie Tacos. Vegetarians rave about it, said Lee. “It’s more of a Mexican-style dish, instead of a kale salad like what other restaurants have. People like it because it’s a nice big portion,” he said.

Nestled inside that taco shell –layers of roasted veggies—mushrooms, onion, and corn. Comes with pico de gallo and Mexican slaw.

there’s no one size fits all, says Katharine Kissane, MS, RD clinical dietitian, Center for Diabetes and Nutrition with Poudre Valley Hospital, UC Health, in Fort Collins. While she could not definitively say that vegan and vegetarian diets are more healthy than, say, Paleo or Mediterranean diets, what she did say is that eating more vegetables is a healthy way to eat because they contain so many vitamins and fiber.

“If you’re vegetarian or vegan, it does not guarantee that you are eating healthy,” she said. “The biggest thing to keep in mind, if people go vegan, you will likely have to supplement, with vitamin B12, and zinc.”

Even though there are other options, meat is the best source of B12, said Kissane. Nutritional yeast offers some B12, but she said it’s not as bioavailable and the body has a hard time absorbing it.

“Iron is another nutrient that is hard to get enough of. We do get some iron from plants,” Kissanee said.

She suggests that vegans and vegetarians opt for dark leafy green like spinach, kale, legumes, and raisins, for iron. Molasses, which comes from sugar cane or beet juice, also contains some iron.

No doubt, processed foods add convenience to our lives. Kissane suggests reading the labels carefully when you see vegan and dairy free labeling claims.

No one said you have to be a vegetarian to enjoy eating vegetarian food. Knowing how to prepare vegetables is the key to unlocking their yummy flavors, says Gafner.

Lessons from the chef

“Vegetarian food can be significantly more delicious than steak and potatoes. Where we get the flavoring is from herbs and fresh vegetables,” Gafner said. “You need to treat vegetables with the same care you treat meat.”

Want to know how chefs turn hohum vegetarian dishes into flavor creations that send blissful shock waves to your taste buds? We thought so, that’s why we caught up with Chef Sean Gafner, owner of two Longmont-based restaurants—The Roost and Jefes Tacos & Tequila.

Anyone who grew up on a cattle ranch knows that meat eating is likely a daily ritual, at least it was for Gafner, who grew up on a cattle ranch in San Joaquin Valley, CA. While he eats vegetarian meals two times a week as an adult—it wasn’t that way growing up. He recalls childhood meals prepared with both chicken and beef in one sitting.

“The ratio of meat to vegetable was backwards, as a kid,” Gafner said.

Aromatic herbs like basil, rosemary and cilantro are a few that come to mind. While garlic is not considered an herb, it drops loads of flavor on any dish, according chefs and foodies. Fresh mint, oregano and Thyme are a few more favorites.

If you boil vegetables before serving them, think again. Instead, Gafner suggests sautéing vegetables in high heat to let them caramelize – similar to meat. That’s how to bring out the flavors.

2 cups butternut squash, cleaned and diced into 1/2-inch cubes 2 tablespoons olive oil ½ cup salted butter ½ yellow onion, minced finely 1 clove garlic, minced finely ¼ cup dry white wine 1 teaspoon Thyme, finely chopped 1 quart veggie stock 1 quart red quinoa ¼ cup fresh sage brunoise (finely sliced) Salt and Pepper Makes four servings

Pre-heat oven to 400 degrees (or 350 convection roast). Spread squash over a baking sheet. Drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Cook until edges brown and it’s soft enough to smash with fork.

Cook butter over high heat until dark brown. Add onion and garlic and sauté until brown. Add wine and reduce by half. Add thyme and veggie stock – bring to boil. Add quinoa, return to a boil, then turn to lowest setting and stir well. Cover and cook 15 minutes; let rest 5 minutes. Stir in roasted butternut squash and sage.

Garnish with parmesan. Want more protein? Top with chicken breast or Portobello mushroom.

“When we were kids, my mom worked hard behind-the-scenes,” Snyder says. “She did the bookkeeping, all the buying and merchandising, and so much more. My dad was the designer and jeweler and was up front. He was much more visible, but my mom was a quiet force of the store’s success. ”

Feeling refreshed for the new year? So is Snyder Jewelers. The Third Generation - locally owned jewelry store marked its 70th Anniversary year with a major remodel in autumn 2018.

The results are much like the gems they showcase: bright, unique, and sparkling.

“There were many reasons to remodel,” says third generation owner Linda Snyder. “Certainly we wanted to celebrate our 70th Anniversary in a big way. But also, after 18 years in this location, it was time to renew, 54 LONGMONT MAGAZINE

refresh and revitalize.”

For Snyder, taking on a store remodel was far from straightforward.

Having grown up within it, she was exceptionally invested in the impact of every change. Throughout, she and her 89 year old mother, Barbara Ann Snyder, made design decisions

She was once featured in a two-page article in Look Magazine as ‘College Wonder Girl’, and was selected as the Betsy Ross - Flag Day Daughter of America.

“My mother always took pride in doing big window displays,” Snyder says. “Every month they would change themes and design. The downtown merchants had competitions at Holidays for «Best Windows» and mom won almost every year. If I have an eye for decorating,

She poured heart and soul into planning and preparing for the overhaul over a period of nine months, after which time the store was closed for merely a two-week period in late October. “We closed at seven in the evening and started the demo right away,” Snyder says. “We worked every day from first thing in the morning to nearly midnight.”

Over the course of the closure, Snyder Jewelers replaced the ceiling, flooring, and carpet. They further added a marble wall, new cabinets, trim, crown moulding, countertops, and new showcases. Other cases

were refinished with added allure.

Snyder invested considerable time selecting the perfect chandeliers, which shine from the ceiling like diamond starbursts. “I wanted something that fit in a fine jewelry store,” Snyder says. “I found a picture of one I liked, and Julie, my neighbor at Lumenarea, was able to find and order them for me. I love keeping my purchases local!»

hen it comes to finding a reputable plumbing service, maybe you’ve come across some stray stereotypes here and there.

Namely, plumbers are rarely upfront regarding cost, and there are always hidden fees. Right? Not Steve’s Plumbing. In fact, Steve’s Plumbing owner, Steve Moskal, and his son are about as close to the anti-stereotype as you can get, making integrity in service and fair pricing top priority.

Growing up, Moskal always liked working with his hands and loved figuring out how things worked. “My father was a supervisor at Bell Labs [industrial research and scientific development company] in Murray Hill, New Jersey,” Moskal says. “He encouraged me, and taught me how to do a lot of things.”

He started Steve’s Plumbing in 1987, which he describes as “the wrong time, wrong year.” Economic recession presented challenges for a new business, and Moskal found himself bartering at times in place of charging fees in early days. Tough beginnings, but Moskal’s determination, skills and personal, honest approach outlasted the downturn and for over 30 years, Steve’s Plumbing has steadily grown and solidified its reputation largely by word-of-mouth. What makes Steve’s Plumbing stand out? “We just always make sure to do the best job we possibly can,” Moskal, senior, says. “We give a fair price. We don’t gouge people. Honestly and fairness are pillars of Steve’s Plumbing operations, but their professionalism goes beyond that, incorporating compassion and love of local community. Reviews consistently note the quality of work, responsiveness, and time taken to offer tips for home maintenance. “Much of our time is spent helping older people,” Moskal says. “We’ll give them a better discount. Sometimes we’ll go to an elderly person’s house, and if the problem is something really simple, we don’t even charge them.”

Margaret provides one-on-one nutrition consultations for people with cancer who have a weakened immune system due to the effects of treatment, but she says keeping a healthy immune system is important for everyone. “Boosting your immune system during and after cancer treatment can help you feel better, maintain your strength, avoid treatment delays and speed your recovery. This goes for anyone fighting an illness, or preventing one.”

Margaret offers these important tips to help boost your immune system and keep it running smoothly throughout the year.

Keep a plant-based, hearthealthy menu.

Choose foods first as your source of vitamins and nutrients. Unless your healthcare team directs you to take a vitamin or supplement, you likely do not need one.

The best way to include these nutrients is by eating whole foods. Make sure your meals incorporate a variety of vegetables and fruits, whole grains, legumes, beans, lean protein and healthy fats.

Eat small, frequent meals throughout the day to stay energized and to ensure your body is getting enough calories, proteins and nutrients. Protein acts as a “builder” and the body uses it to build and repair tissues. In addition, drinking eight to 10 glasses of fluids every day is one of the most effective ways to flush waste from your body and support the health of your immune system.

Phytochemicals act as soldiers in the immune system to protect the body from damage. In addition to using nutrition to boost your immune system, you can also make changes to your lifestyle to help support health and immunity. These include: • Decrease your exposure to bacteria, viruses and germs.

• Aim for 7 hours or more of sleep every night. If your sleep is interrupted, try a 30-minute nap during the day.

• Reduce stress by taking time to do things you enjoy such as spending time with family, spending time outdoors or reading. If your feelings of anxiety or depression make it difficult for you to complete daily tasks, talk to your healthcare team.

Event At Local School Celebrated 6 Millionth Milk Bottle Cap Redemption By Students Katie Herrmann, Longmont Dairy Farm co-owner, and Gary Schlagel, Community Service Director of Longmont Dairy Farm, presented a special certificate to the school, along with an additional check.

Cookies and—of course—milk were served.

Blue Mountain Elementary School in Longmont turned in the six millionth milk bottle cap under a special program sponsored by local company Longmont Dairy Farm.

On Wednesday, December 5 a special ceremony was held at Blue Mountain Elementary School, celebrating the six millionth milk cap.

Over 370 schools from the Front Range area participate in Longmont Dairy Farm’s Milk Caps for Mooola program which helps students earn money for their schools and students. Longmont Dairy reimburses schools 5 cents for each of the dairy’s milk bottle caps.

“We are excited to report that we have donated over $300,000

to participating schools since we started the program five years ago,” said Herrmann, “and it’s fun to see the students’ enthusiasm and the meaningful ways these funds have enhanced their programs.”

Schools are free to spend their Milk Caps for Mooola money as they wish. Students have sent letters to the dairy describing the creative ways they have promoted the program and used some of the bottle caps.

Interfaith Quilters Of Longmont Hold Their 333rd Annual Show and Sale

Interfaith Quilters of Longmont is proud to present their 33rd annual quilt show and sale on March 1-2 at the First Lutheran Church, 803 3rd Avenue in Longmont.

The proceeds from the sale of these hand- and machine-made quilts will benefit OUR Center and the Safe Shelter of the St. Vrain Valley.

The preview showing will be open on Friday, March 1 from 5-8 p.m., but no sales will be available at that time. The $5 admission to the preview showing also gives guests entry into the show and sale the following day. For those who only want to attend the show and sale on Saturday, admission is only $1.

There will be about 600 quilts to choose from. You will find a wide variety of baby quilts, teen-themed quilts, wall hangings, table toppers, placemats, lap quilts and pillows.

Learn about health and wellness by exploring various rooms of vendors, practitioners, providers, and readers. Fitness classes also take place throughout the day, so come ready to sample something new.

Practitioners and readers will provide 10-minute sessions for $5 or 20-minute sessions for $10. Cashonly fee is paid directly to the practitioner at the fair.

Medals will be given to the top three men and women overall as well as to the top three in each age group.

A limited number of tickets will be sold for $25— so don’t wait. Each ticket includes a mug and a $10 coupon redeemable at participating stores and businesses valid from February 24- March 16.

A small quantity of tickets will be available for purchase on the day of the event on a first come, first serve basis at 12 p.m. at Niwot Realty.

PUCK O’ THE IRISH ADULT HOCKEY TOURNAMENT March 14-17; Longmont Ice Pavilion, 725 8th Ave., Longmont Compete in this fast-paced 4-on-4 hockey tournament.

Two divisions will be offered: Intermediate (IC/D), and Competitive (A/B) and all games will be refereed by officials from the Colorado Ice Hockey Referees Association. There’s a 4-game minimum with the top two teams in each division competing for the championship.

Winners of each division will receive official Puck o’ the Irish beer mugs and jerseys.
