4-H AND OPEN CLASS EXHIBITS
4-H members work hard all year long with an eye on showing their projects at the fair. But the fair is also an opportunity for the community to display their talents in many categories in the Open Class Exhibits. Individuals enter and compete in departments ranging from jam making to garden produce to arts to sewing and much more.
CARNIVAL AMERICANA
Enjoy the excitement of rides, games and food, food, food all along the Carnival Americana midway! The Carnival is open weeknights 4 pm-midnight, weekends noon-midnight. TICKETS: $80 All-Days MegaPasses, $30 One-Day passes. Advance sales online and at box office end on Aug. 2 at noon. Day of fair prices increase $5 to $35 at Carnival Gate.
COLORADO CRAFT CAVE
New this year, the Colorado Craft Cave will be located where the Gnarly Barley Brew Festival was previously, but will be open all five central days of the fair and will not be ticketed. The Craft Cave will feature a full range of Colorado beers and will highlight different breweries daily. The cave will offer a covered area for craft beer lovers and families alike to relax during the fair. In addition to featuring beer from around the state, the new Craft Cave will expand into craft liquors, Colorado wines and fun daily activities.
The Larimer County Fair boasts over 100,000 attendees, exhibits, a marketplace, live music, rodeo, tons of entertainment, a carnival and more!

Each year, approximately 225 youth, ages 8-19 years old, participate in the Junior Livestock Sale. Participants learn responsibility, time management, record keeping and public speaking, while working to earn back their investment on the animal they are selling. Funds raised from each animal sold returns to the youth as funds for college.

LARIMER COUNTY 4-H AND THE FAIR: A Symbiotic Relationship
By Emma Castleberry for Larimer County Fair Guide With more than 1100 youth participants, Larimer County boasts the largest 4-H Club enrollment in the state. This engagement makes for an exciting and expansive Larimer County Fair. Marvin Witt, chairman of the Larimer County Fair Board, admits that the relationship between 4-H and the Larimer County Fair is a close, strong bond. “We need eachother,” he says. “The fair needs the 4-H because it’s the center piece of what we’re offering for the public.” Witt adds that the relationship is reciprocal. “It goes both ways,” he says. “We’ve got to work together to make it a really good learning experience for the kids of 4-H as well as the people who come in from surrounding areas.” In addition to providing an opportunity for youth to showcase their skills, the Larimer County Fair provides an opportunity for visitors to learn about agriculture and other industries through the 4-H projects. This was one of the initial purposes of the fair, and it is all the more important today, as it is estimated that less than 2 percent of the US population is involved in production agriculture. 10 LARIMER COUNTY FAIR GUIDE
4-H at the Fair
The 4-H Club is a youth development program of Colorado State University Extension that offers various projects that cater to youth interests, from fashion to dairy to pygmy goats. Colorado conducted a study on the benefits of 4-H which found that youth participating in the program were more likely to succeed in school, be more involved in leadership opportunities, be viewed as role models and help others. “The partnership between 4-H and the Larimer County Fair allows youth to extend their learning, showcase their skills and it also provides recognition to the members for their year-long efforts,” says Megan Blaser, 4-H youth development agent. Blaser demonstrated an early interest in sewing that inspired her mother to ReporterHerald.com
enroll her in a 4-H club. She completed a number of sewing, visual arts and needle work projects that led to her pursuit of a degree in Apparel Design. “I worked as an intern with our local 4-H program through the summers, and upon graduation, I realized I wanted to support offering educational opportunities to others, as 4-H did for me,” she says. “I continued my education to retain a career as a 4-H Youth Development Agent.” Blaser explains that all 4-H projects use youth’s interests to help them develop essential life skills. “The Fair and these types of contests are an opportunity for youth to showcase the skills they have developed throughout the year,” she says. Youth will need to solve problems, manage time, keep records, communicate and practice public speaking skills as they work through projects and prepare them to showcase at the county fair. A perfect example of these tasks culminating in a single project is the Model Rocketry Fly Day contest, which takes place this year on July 28. Youth will learn about design, engineering, science and July 28, 2019
safety and participants are judged on construction of the rocket, range safety, flight stability, parachute deployment and landing. “Youth watch for flying aircrafts, assess the wind and make decisions to support positive outcomes and ensure
safety,” says Blaser. “These projects help provide an avenue for youth to learn, and the county fair is the place for them to test their knowledge.” Another prime example of the beneficial relationship between 4-H and the Larimer County Fair is the Dairy Barn. “This is a retail outlet that is completely run by 4-H youth,” says Kathy Mason, communications special-
ist with 4-H. “They do all of the operations—planning, scheduling, ordering and staffing. that was voted in in 2017 will bring in another 216 million dollars to expand the Larimer County Fairgrounds,” says Witt. “It’s astronomical what’s going to happen.” Future plans for the fairgrounds include an additional hotel and convention center on site; an ice-skating rink; and an olympic-sized pool with arena seating for tournaments. “We have taken 4-H and developed it into a much bigger thing for the county,” says Witt. “We’re so excited because there is nothing like it in the US. We’ll be operating all 52 weeks of the year with tournaments and conventions.” This kind of team work between 4-H and the Fair Board is emblematic of the long-term and fulfilling partnership between the organizations.

OPEN CLASS COMPETITION: A Take on Competitive Creativity

W
hen you think of county fair competitions, what usually comes to mind? People showing their livestock—a surefire hit. But, what if there’s another aspect of the fair for the public to enjoy and even get involved in? Maybe animals aren’t your thing. That’s ok, because there are many departments or categories—11 to be exact— in The Larimer County Fair Open Class competitions. Open Class has been the rising star of Larimer County Fair since the fair’s beginnings and continues to grow into a huge part of the fair’s yearly celebration of talent. The Open Class competition offers something different and in sync with society’s renewed interest in all things artisan. From crafting to canning, people are exploring the pioneer days which have become a modern delight! It is almost common knowledge now that being creative relieves stress and brings a certain joy that can only be found in making something from mind to matter. The fair is a place to recognize these efforts. No membership is required to enter the Open Class competition so come out and see how creative your community is. Maybe you’ll be inspired to do a little creating yourself. Pre-registration ended on July 15, but now is the time to start planning for next year. And, it’s not just about the ribbon or prize at the fair, but the input from expert, professional judges, 14 LARIMER COUNTY FAIR GUIDE
which helps to improve all competitors’ work. With everything from a wide array of photography, to the intricacies of quilting, the Open Class competition offers an opportunity for people of different ages and walks of life to be creative and participate in the fair. In some categories, like photography, there are hundreds of entries that range from children to senior citizens. Superintendent of Open Photography, Anne Peterson, has been overseeing the photography competition for almost two decades. As a volunteer and amateur photographer, Anne continues to come back year after year to encourage photographers to continue to perfect their skills. Anne talks about her highlight of the fair, “The night of check-in is fun because I get to see the photos entered and encourage the kids. And it’s always fun to see returning entries. People enter year after year.” Photography is the largest department in the Open Class competition. Each division within the department of photography has multiple classes that individuals can enter to compete. Within photography there are the following classes: scenic; wildlife; domestic animals; plants, flowers and insects; people; sports action; humor; other; black and white and digital photo class entries. The first competition there were about 40 entries total within all of photography, last year there was a total of 428. Talk about amazing growth! ReporterHerald.com
Another department in the Open Class competitions that is seeing rapid growth is quilting. Newly appointed Superintendent of quilting for 2019, Susan Lynd, is excited for this year’s competition. She spends time in the community encouraging fellow quilters to participate. About 3 years ago there were around 80 quilts entered and last year 161 were entered. Lynd was in 4-H in her youth and sees much value in the county fair: “To me, the fair is family time, learning, appreciation for creative crafts, and appreciation of talents.” All departments with the Open Class include: Horticulture, garden flowers, baked products, canned and dried products, needlework, quilting, spinning and weaving, machine work, fine arts, photography, and creative crafts. Entries are all available for viewing after judging has been conducted throughout the duration of the fair. Open Class Exhibit opens to the public at 10 a.m., August 3.

Seventeen-year-old Lindsey Fancher-Owen applied to be the Larimer County Fair & Rodeo Queen in memory of her stepfather, and during her reign, she learned the best ways to promote the agriculture lifestyle they both loved. Loveland native Fancher-Owen grew up on a small rodeo cattle ranch, the Fancy R, with her stepfather, Richard Rule, brothers, Rayne and Drake Rule, and mother, Dr. Shannon Fancher, a doctor of veterinary medicine as is her father, Dr. William Patrick Owen. “It was out of his memory I decided to go for it,” said Fancher-Owen about Rule, who died two years ago of cancer. “I fell in love with rodeo because it was his love. … It is such a great tieback to our Western heritage and our Western way of life. I love that it still keeps that Western feel and our country roots alive.” Fancher-Owen admires how Rule served 25 years on the rodeo committee, meeting rodeo contestants and rodeo queens, and served as the arena director. “He was the guy that took care of things that went on during performance. He was the action guy,” Fancher-Owen said. 18 LARIMER COUNTY FAIR GUIDE
Becoming Interested in Being Queen Fancher-Owen, a rising senior at Thompson Valley High School, often went behind the chutes with Rule and as a child dreamed of being a fair and rodeo queen, a tradition in place in Larimer County since 1951. She participated in the agricultural lifestyle in other ways, including as a member of the Desperados 4H Club for nine years. She and her queen’s horse, a seven-year-old gelding named Cutter, ride in the queen’s activities and also compete in gymkhana, something she has done since she was five, as well as barrel racing. She’s also done theater since she was four and track and field since the fifth grade, plus loves singing the National Anthem as part of the Thompson Valley Choir. ReporterHerald.com
The first queen for Larimer County was Donna Adcock Haussermann, also known as Pepper, in a program started to provide education about agriculture and rodeo life. Since then, the program has seen 68 queens, including Fancher-Owen, the 2019 queen whose term will end Aug. 6, when the next queen will be crowned. She is the sole member of fair royalty, though for awhile, there was a lady-in-waiting.
Applying to be the Queen Fancher-Owen and the other queens are overseen by the queens subcommittee of the Larimer County Fair Board. The role of the queens is to be an ambassador to Larimer County, to promote The Ranch and to serve as spokeswoman for the PRCA (Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association) Rodeo, the Larimer County Fair and the sport of rodeo and the agricultural lifestyle. “She is just an ambassador to Larimer County to represent Larimer County and be a spokesman for the rodeo and the county fair … for young girls to look up to and hopefully want to July 28, 2019
be the queen of the fair and rodeo,” said Pat Young, co-chairman of the fair board and chairman of the queens committee. “We’ve been fortunate to have in this county the quality of girls we have had. … A lot of counties are a little envious of how good of a program we have had.” To be selected as the next year’s queen, queen candidates go through an application and competition process. They are required to be residents of Larimer County or involved in 4-H or Future Farmers of America in Larimer County and at least 16 years of age at the start of their reign up to 22 when their reign ends. The candidates submit an essay explaining why they want to be queen, along with a resume and school transcripts in the application that this year is due July 15. If they meet the qualifications, they will move on to the

next level and compete in the queen’s contest in four areas of appearance, personality, knowledge and horsemanship. This year, the queens’ contest will be July 27 during and following the Larimer County Fair Parade. The contestants will ride in the parade, which begins at 9 a.m., and take part in a competition at the Budweiser Events Center, where they will model, give
a speech, answer impromptu media questions and take part in an interview about horse and rodeo facts and current events, plus take a written test on county and state facts and horse and rodeo knowledge. They will conclude the competition in the arena by performing a reigning pattern on horseback and doing a queen’s run, waving to the crowd, and a separate flag run. The winning queen will be announced that day. “The judges are really looking for polished, knowledgeable, down-to-earth girls that can be really gentle and kind and bubbly to people and have enough grit to handle the responsibilities for a year,” Fancher-Owen said. Last year, there were six contestants, the most in 15 years, and this year, it is expected there will be five. Usually, two to four compete.

Generations of families have come back year after year to take in the sights and sounds of pro rodeo, making it an August tradition in Northern Colorado. The rodeo was held at the old fairgrounds south of downtown Loveland for decades until 2003, when The Ranch Events Complex became its permanent home. I found that comedy was a lot harder to do successfully than bullfighting! I love to hear people laugh and to know that I am responsible for that. I still study my craft on a daily basis.” The rodeo faithful will also be dazzled by the unique talents of pro freestyle bullfighters Dusty Tuckness and Nathan Harp. These are top tier guys, both champions many

times over, who some would say are just plain crazy. But to see them get in the ring with a bull that wants to tear them apart is to witness a dance that’s beautiful in its own way and only exists in the rodeo. Freestyle bullfighting was developed by the gutsy rodeo clowns whose job it is to protect bull riders from the horns of a raging bull. If not in person, you’ve undoubtedly seen a rodeo clown waving his or her arms wildly and running around the bull while the rider scrambles to safety. In freestyle bullfighting, the bullfighter ducks and dodges, jumps and even uses a barrel to avoid the

They impart a persona of longtime pals joking around in their lyrical style, says vocalist Jordan Anderson— who grew up right here in Loveland. Bandmate Caleb Maitland is originally from Michigan. Anderson’s excitement to come back home. She said performing in Loveland, at the fair, is like no other venue because of the crowd’s warm delicious welcome. “Last year when we played in Loveland [at the fair] my whole family and all of my friends were there…and people who didn’t know me became fans. The feeling we had last year is incomparable to any other show. There was a spark in the air and that was something I’ve never felt before ,” she said. Undoubtedly Anderson’s all time fave song, “Let Goodbye Have The Last Say,” the deeply personal song that launched this band’s career into stardom, Anderson said.
