ccording to the most recent statistics from the U.S. Census, there are around 17.4 million U.S. veterans. On and around Veterans Day, Americans take time to honor our military veterans for their patriotism, braveness, willingness to serve and the sacrifices they’ve made to ensure our freedom. Veterans Day was originally known as Armistice Day. World War I – known at the time as “The Great War” – officially ended when the Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919, in the Palace of Versailles outside the town of Versailles, France. However, fighting ceased seven months earlier when an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, between the Allied nations and Germany went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. For that reason, Nov. 11, 1918, is generally regarded as the end of “the war to end all wars.” An Act (52 Stat. 351; 5 U. S. Code, Sec. 87a) approved May 13, 1938, made the 11th of November in each year a legal holiday — a day to be dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be thereafter celebrated and known as “Armistice Day.” Armistice Day was primarily a day set aside to honor veterans of World War I, but in 1954, after World War II had required the greatest mobilization of soldiers, sailors, Marines and airmen in the Nation’s history; after American forces had fought

Joseph Applehans served in the Army during World War II in Europe, Africa and the Middle East. He received the Good Conduct Award. Joseph is buried at Riverside Cemetery.

He an. became a flight instructor until being sent to the Pacific Theater where he flew C-46’s and C-47’s and followed the front from New Guinea to Tokyo, pulling gliders on the front and hauling wounded soldiers and cargo until World War II ended. He was honorably discharged as a Captain in 1946. He died in January 2010 and is buried next to his wife, Edna, at Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife honors military service with benefits Colorado Parks and Wildlife offers a variety of programs intended to thank active duty members of the military and veterans:
Active duty benefits
• Advance purchase of leftover hunting licenses. Active duty military members who are deployed outside of the United States and are stationed in Colorado or a Colorado resident can purchase leftover licenses after the draw and prior to the annual leftover purchase date (normally available end of July). A military leftover application must be completed and restrictions do apply. • Preference points while deployed outside the U.S. Active duty members of the U.S. Armed
Forces who are stationed in Colorado and actively deployed outside the U.S. can apply to receive a preference point for a future hunt. The “military preference point application” is normally available in July annually and must be postmarked by the first Tuesday in January. • License refund or preference point return if deployed after applying for a hunting license. Disabled Veterans license plates may access Colorado State Parks free without a pass on the windshield. These plates are obtained through the Division of Motor Vehicles. The law for individuals with Disabled Veterans license plates provides free entrance to state parks and does not provide special camping rates. The veteran must be present in the vehicle. • Lifetime fishing and combo license. Military veterans who are disabled and residents of Colorado are eligible to apply for a lifetime fishing and small game combo license. The veteran must have proof of service-connected disability of 60% or more, as rated by the Department of Veteran’s Affairs. Purple Heart recipients are also eligible to apply for the combo license. •Independence Parks Pass. Colorado resident disabled veterans may apply for the free Independence Pass. Independence Pass holders over age 64 qualify for discounted camping in state parks Sunday through Thursday, excluding holidays.
