T

hroughout the world, there are certain symbols and icons that are associated with different countries.

There’s Big Ben and the Queen’s castle in England, the Eiffel Tower and croissants for France,Viki kings i of Sweden and the Great Wall and samurai of China.

Apple pie, baseball, the Statue of Liberty tyy and the cowboy are definitely notable icons of America.

The image of a lone cowboy mounted on a horse, looki king i over his cattle across open plains lined with grass became even more of a symbol of America as actors such as Gene Autry, Roy Rogers,John Wayne,Kevin Costner and Clint Eastw twood w captured our love of the west through movies and television.

While donning a cowboy hat and wearing a western shirt may be a once or twice tw w a year thing for city slickers, many 6 · Greeley Stampede

people in Greeley and Weld County have been living the western lifesty tyle y and following its culture for more than 100 years.

As we embark on the 100th Greeley Stampede,let’s take a look back at how the Greeley Stampede began and has evolved over the years to become one of the best and most anticipated annual events in northern Colorado.

The Greeley Stampede is in favorable company when it comes to historic rodeos, sharing the heritage with the Prescott, Ariz., rodeo which began in 1888 and is considered the first official rodeo; Cheyenne Frontier Days, which celebrates is 126th event this year; the Pendleton RoundUp in Oregon that began in 1910; and Canada’s Calgary Stampede which was founded in 1912. greeleytribune.com

The Greeley Stampede began in the late 1800s as a way to honor local potato farmers. The event took on a name, the Greeley Spud Rodeo, in 1922 and featured bronc riding, roping, a pie eating contest, a horse race, motorcycle and bicycle races and a two-mile tw w Model-T Ford race.

In 1997, the rodeo ranked among the top 10 rodeos in the world when it increased prize money. That year organizers also unveiled the 15-foot “When Champions Meet” bronze sculpture of a saddle bronc rider.The sculpture still sits outside the Greeley Stampede Arena.

The Greeley Stampede Foundation was formed in 2006 as a way to support continuing education for Weld County students.The Stampede hosts three annual events that raise money for the Stampede Foundation — a golf tournament, Western Art Show and Opening Night Gala and the Big Buckl kle l Ball. Since its formation, the Greeley Stampede Fo u n d a t i o n h a s awarded over $665,000 in scholarships to more than 640 northern Colorado students.

The first Spud Rodeo drew in around 2,500 people of all ages to Greeley for the one-day event.

The Wo m e n ’ s Christian Temperance Union tried to put the kibosh on the rodeo in 1927. Fortunately, the event was saved when John M.B. Pitkin, president of the First National Bank and one of Greeley’s most infl fluential l residents, told the city that he supported the rodeo.

The rodeo became an official member of the Professional Cowboys Rodeo Association, PRCA, in 1945. The now-sanctioned PRCA events drew larger names in the rodeo world to compete in Greeley and gave the event a reputation on the national rodeo circuit.

In addition to the name changes over the years, the event was expanded from one day to two tw w days to a week and then to the 12 days we currently celebrate.

In 1949, the rodeo under went another name change with An official event program for the Greeley Spud Rodeo from 1930.

The name honored the city ty’s y One of the most anticipated community tyy events during the namesake, Horace Greeley, who told Union Colony founder Stampede is the annual Independence Day Parade. As the city tyy of Greeley grew, so did the Independence Day Parade.To date, the event attracts thousands of attendees and features over 150 entries.

The parade begins at 9 a.m. with a flyover before the longhorns and parade entries make their way along the parade route beginning at 19th Street and ending at Lincoln Park near 5th Street.

The parade has become such a tradition in the community tyy that people will often stake out their spots days ahead of the event.

As in previous years,the Greeley Stampede will be handing out awards for several categories including the new UNC Community tyy Fan Pick and best marching band or 4H youth entry.

Fans of parades can also watch the Stampede’s daily Parade in the Park, which features the iconic longhorns, tractors, hitches and rodeo royalty tyy from Colorado and across the U.S. As with any event, it takes a lot of help from community tyy members who volunteer their time and talents and the Greeley Stampede is no exception.

Over the past 100 years,there have been hundreds of people who have made valuable contributions to help make the Stampede a success.

Ron Jackson was instrumental in some of the major capital improvements to the grounds such as the west arena enclosure,the Stampede office expansion and construction of the portable music stage.

Lynn Settje was the first CEO of the Greeley Stampede and helped raise the event to international recognition.

formed a Hall of Fame program in 2018 to recognize and honor people who have given their time toward the event.

Each year,community tyy members from around Greeley and Weld County tyy submit nominations for outstanding individuals and families that they think should be inducted into the Hall of Fame.

A steering committee collects all of the nominations and determines the candidates for the year’s induction.Due to the pandemic and the cancellation of the Greeley Stampede,there were no Hall of Fame inductees for 2020.

“This process gets harder and harder each year as there were so many great nomination forms to review. The Stampede is what it is today because of the countless hours that all of these nominees put in to make our community tyy better,” said Justin Watada, Greeley Stampede general manager and Hall of Fame chairman.

For 2022, the committee has chosen Ron Jackson, Lynn Settje and the Hill Family for the honor.

“The selection committee felt these two tw w individuals and the Hill Family made the biggest impact and deserve to be recognized for their contributions as part of the 2022 Hall of Fame class.”

The Hill Family became involved with the Stampede in the 1970s when the event transitioned to a stand-alone organization.The family has served as trail bosses, wranglers and were instrumental in rebuilding the grandstands and construction of the Island Grove Events Center.

New events and activities you’re not going to want to miss at the 100th Greeley Stampede TAMARA RA A MARKARD • STAFF REPORTER •

W

hile the Greeley Stampede is known for its rodeo events and concert series, that’s just a small part of what takes place each year.

Every year organizers of the event work to feature a variety of events and activities for adults, teens and children of all ages and this year is no different.

While the Stampede will be hosting its popular Big Buckl kle l Ball, Tea with the Queen and Longhorn Drive, there are a few new events and activities that you will not want to miss.

Below is a list of some the gotta see events taki king i place beginning Saturday, June 25 and running through Sunday, July 3 at the 100th Greeley Stampede.

From noon to 6 p.m. Saturday, June 25, Saturday, July 2 and Sunday, July 3, swing by the Centennial Village Museum, 1475 A. St. to check out the Living History Museum. The event will feature educational demonstrations, tours of the buildings and more for adults, teens and children of all ages.

At 1 p.m. Saturday, June 25, guests are invited to come watch as participants in the LEGO Creation Festival pit their creativity and imagination against one another to create a structure using LEGOs and incorporating the theme of “Celebrating 100 Years of the Greeley Stampede.” The event will take place in the Events Center and 12 · Greeley Stampede

The Boots & Bags Cornhole Tournament kicks off at noon Saturday, June 25 with two different flights/ divisions for all ages and ski kill i levels of players. Sponsored

by Flatiron Steel, each tournament will consist of two tw w rounds of pool play going into a double elimination bracket as well as a recreational tournament. Entry for the competitive tournament is $50 per person and for the recreational tournament the fee is $25 per person.

Registration is required to participate and can be done by going to https://bit.ly/3aIELRt. Family Funday Sunday on Sunday, June 26 will feature a variety of field events and potato-themed activities honoring Greeley’s Spud Rodeo. Festivities kick kii off at 3 p.m. in the Greeley Stampede Park.

Get ready for some boot scootin’as the Barn Dance hits the floor at 4 p.m. Sunday, June 26 in the 4H Building.

The evening begins with free country line dancing lessons, beginning swing dance instruction and a demonstration of new county swing moves from instructors with greeleytribune.com

Country Kickup. Social dancing begins at 7 p.m. All ages are welcome to attend.

W hiskey and Cigar Tasting presented by Brad Inhulsen Sears Real Estate and hosted by Scott James from BIG 97.9 is set to take place at 6:30 p.m.Wednesday, June 29 and will feature the opportunity for attendees to learn about the world of whiskey and different cigars as well as enjoy a flight of five whiskey or scotch samples and a cigar. Participants must be 21 or older to attend.

District will guide attendees through various poses and breathing exercises.The free event is open to people of all fitness levels and ages.

The Greeley Stampede is featuring its newest idea, Hoverboard Barrel Racing, at 4 p.m. on Sunday, July 3.

What to know before heading out to the 100th Greeley Stampede TAMARA RA A MARKARD • STAFF REPORTER •

A

s we dust off our boots and get our cowboy hats re-formed in preparation for the upcoming 100th Greeley Stampede,there’s a few rules and guidelines, as well as some new amenities, that visitors should be familiar with before heading out for a day of rodeo, carnival rides and fair food.

The first and probably the most important is that the arena clear bag policy willlll be in force again this year and all alll arena rodeo, concerts and demolition derby events are subject to the clear bag policy.That means if you planned to bring a backpack, purse or bag with your essentials in it to an arena event,you might want to read this first.

Visitors to the Greeley Stampede Arena are allowed to bring in a clear plastic, vinyl or PVC bag that does not exceed 12-inches long, 6-inches wide and 12-inches high, or basically the size of a one-gallon Ziploc plastic bag. In addition, visitors can carry one small clutch bag that is no larger than 6.5-inches long by 3-inches wide by 4.5-inches high, with or without a 14 · Greeley Stampede

Diaper bags smal allller l than 24-inches by 15-inches by 18-inches are allowed, however, they must be accompanied by a child as well as medically necessary items that will not fit into a clutch.

A new featu ture u this year to the arena’s clear bag policy includes the use of wallets. Visitors are allowed to bring in a wallet no larger than 4.5-inches by 3-inches by 6.5 inches.

Sassy Bagz in downtown Greeley sells a variety tyy of different clear bags that can be used in place of a clear plastic freezer bag or small clutch. The store features cross body and backpack options that meet the Greeley Stampede’s guidelines.Amazon and other online retailers also sell different clear bag options if you are looki king i to purchase a reusable bag that can be used at the Stampede and other events.

All bags are subject to searches and the Stampede does offer All day-use lockers for free use during arena events. Lockers are located in the Buckl kle l and guests can bring their own lock or greeleytribune.com

The Stampede Park does allllow l non-clear backpacks,bags and purses as long as they do not exceed 24-inches long by 15-inches wide by 18-inches high. As with the arena policy, all bags are subject to search and seizure.

Items prohibited from the Greeley Stampede grounds include: • Gang clothing or symbols • Selfie sticks, drones, Go Pro style cameras and laser pointers • Professional camera and video equipment • No filming with iPads or tablets • Non-serv rvice v animals • Bikes, skateboards, skates, rollerblades or hover boards • Pepper spray or mace • Open carry ry y firearms • Knives with blades larger than 3 ½-inches • Outside food and non-water beverages Guests are allllowed l to bring one 20-ounce or smallller l water bottle that is factory sealed and/ d/or / one empty tyy water bottle that can be filled inside the event grounds.Al Alll bottles must be non-glass.

While in the arena, guests are asked to not stand on chairs/ seats, block aisles or interfere with the event or participants in any way.

Taunting,offensive language,drunk and disorderly conduct, fighting and distu turbing u other guests’time at the Stampede can result in being ejected from the event.

Strollers are allowed on the grounds, however strollers must be parked in the new stroller corral located outside the south and north entrances to the arena during events. Strollers must be picked up within 15 minutes of the event ending.

In addition to the new stroller corral, the Stampede has added a few other amenities such as a first aid tent,shade tents, sunscreen stations, relax axation x stations with air conditioning, a private nursing suite in the Buckl kle l Club for nursing mothers,a shuttle service and ride share.

Restrooms are available in the Buckl kle l Club, Aven’s Village, around the carnival and in the event’s center.

Tickets for daily park admission are $5 per person age 2 and older.

Tickets to rodeo,concerts and the demolition derby includes access to the park grounds and range in price from $15 to $130 depending on the event. Children under age 2 do not require a ticket for arena events.

Wrist bands and coupons for carnival rides will be available for purchase onsite at the carnival.

Greeley Stampede gussies up the arena with murals from artists as well as pieces from local students TAMARA RA A MARKARD • STAFF REPORTER •

I

n addition to a towering new stage, the Greeley Stampede Arena has gotten some pops of color and western flair along the walls of the two tw w main stairways leading up into the stands and visitors are guaranteed to be wowed when they see the new additions.

“We were going through a brainstorm process of how we could make the 100th special. I’m a product of the art department of Weld County School District 6 so I’m always trying to push art at the Stampede,” explained Kevin McFarling, Greeley Stampede Marketing coordinator. “We had talked about ways we could 16 · Greeley Stampede

incorporate art and I have walked through these entry ways a million times; it’s a blank canvas and a perfect opportunity for doing something like this.”

McFarling reached out to the city of Greeley to see if it would be interested in partnering with the Stampede for a mural project in the two tw w stairwells and as it turned out, the city was elated at the idea and jumped on board.

Kevin McFarling, Greeley Stampede Marketing coordinator. “We had talked about ways we could incorporate art and I have walked through these entry ways a million times; it’s a blank canvas and a perfect opportunity for doing something like this.”

With the Stampede and the city already having worked with local artist Armando Silva and Denver-based artist Cody Kuehl, it was an easy decision to commission the tw two w for the mural project.

When the Stampede and city viewed the proposed designs, organizers were “not surprised because both pieces fit their own styles”and the designs were accepted on the first draft, said Kim Snyder with the Greeley Arts Commission.

“They know the place, they know the audience and it just came out and we were like,‘yeah, do it’,”Snyder said.

“We weren’t going to hold hands to make sure they did it. We wanted them to have fun.They are so experienced and know what they are doing.”

Silva created a vibrant mural featuring a boy wrestling a rooster on one side of the stairwell with a young girl in a charro outfit on the other.

In true Armando Silva fashion, both pieces contain intricate details and line work that will keep the eyes of visitors occupied for some time.

Much like Silva’s piece, Kuehl’s mural of a bronc rider jumps off of the wall with bright colors and the illusion of action.

“The initial concept when we were talking about it, I thought about how old libraries and museums have marble statues of lions and things like that. That was kii of the initial idea of the color pallet, these grandiose kind marble figures that are popping out on the way into the arena,”Kuehl said.“It’s very illustration based, very comic book base. I approached it as what would be an iconic image for the Stampede.”

While both murals are vibrant and full of action, each encompasses a completely different style and look, creating a treat for the eyes of visitors.

“We knew we wanted them to be different, because that was going to make the two tw w entrances exciting. But we were really excited to see how different they were,” McFarling said. “It’s amazing what adding some color does. There’s lot of energy going on in here too.”

“To see the transition of it all has been really fun to watch,” Kuehl added.

While Silva was pretty comfortable taki king i on the mural project, Kuehl admitted he was a bit hesitant at first.

“The designs are really simple. It’s feminine piece and a masculine piece, but they are both meant for the kids. kii I did lean a bit on my cultural background, but mainly it’s a piece for the kids,” kii Silva explained. “These are kind kii of elements that I have incorporated in previous pieces and it was a nice way to put them together.”

Silva designed the mural so that visitors get a different perspective going up and coming down the stairwell.

“The composition is meant to carry you up the stairs,” Silva said. “And as you come down the stairs, you see different elements.”

Silva’s piece perfectly times with the Greeley Stampede’s addition of the Heritage of Mexico Rodeo at 1 p.m. Sunday, July 3. The event is set to include dancing horses, performances by a matador, rope artistry demonstration, folkl klorico l dancing and more.The event’s acts are choreographed by fourth-generation champion charro, Jerry Diaz.

“As people are walking into the arena, seeing all the colors and the action, it’s fun and they are going to be ready to experience what is going on inside the arena,” McFarling said.“It’s really going to change the vibes. It’s that whole walki king i through the art that makes it special.”

“I don’t do a ton of murals; I’ve done about three this size. I mainly show in galleries so it hasn’t been a thing I really pursued much,”Kuehl said. “When they first brought me out here and asked me what I thought, I told them, ‘this is a terrible idea.’ There’s so many logistical hurdles I wasn’t sure how we were going to do it. I was like, ‘are you sure you don’t want to do any of these other walls?’

time to dry, a UV clear-coat will be laid on top of the pieces to protect them from the weather and outdoor elements.

“But it’s been a really neat project in so many ways.”

In addition to the murals, the Stampede asked high school students from a few different schools to create 10 selfie stations that will be placed around the grounds for visitors to snap fun and memorable pictures in front of.

Unlike Silva who worked on both sides of the stairwell at the same time, Kuehl’s game plan was to paint one side of the stairwell to see how the mural came out and then make any necessary adjustments for the other side.

“I finished the right side first, so that was kind kii of like proof of concept,” Kuehl said, laughing.

Both Silva and Kuhel used exterior paint provided by Sherwin Williams store in Greeley. The artists provided the paint store with the color pallets they needed and the store mixed each one specifically for the mural project.

“They were so cool and accommodating,” Kuehl said.

“They were very excited to be part of the project.”

“The UV protectant will add a nice gloss to it and give it years of protection from the weather, any spills and peoples’ hands on it. It will also minimize any visible brush strokes,”Silva said.“And it can be pressured washed whenever it needs it.”

The 8-foot by 8-foot panels will feature a variety of designs including a pirate themed panel The Stampede also sent rodeo barrels to local elementary schools, giving them a chance to add their own touch on decorating the grounds for the 100th event.

Johnson comes from a long line of musicians that have written songs about rodeos including Garth Brooks, Chris LeDoux ux, x George Strait and Brooks and Dunn.

Rodeo is the passion that pumps through the veins of cowboys across the U.S. and separates the men from the boys.

The sport of rodeo evolved from the daily challenges cowboys faced on ranches such as breaking horses and roping calves. Rodeo’s roots date back to the 16th century with Spanish conquistador and Spanish-Mexican settlers playing a key role in the origin of rodeo through the introduction of horses and cattle in the southwest. greeleytribune.com

The true cowboy era began after the Civil War as ranchers in the southwest organized cattle drives to train stations where the animals would be transported east, AGDaily.com reports.

During their free time on these cattle drives, cowboys would keep themselves occupied and entertained by taking part in competitions against each other to determine who had the best riding and roping ski kills. i While the actual location and date of the first official rodeo is up for debate, many historians claim that the first organized rodeo took place in 1869 in Deer Trail, Colo.

First, let’s take a look at the rules and regulations around roughstock events.

Professional rodeos consist of two tw w types of competition: roughstock events and timed events, according to the PRCA website.

Bull Riding

Roughstock events include bareback riding, saddle bronc riding and bull riding while timed events consist of steer wrestling, team roping, tie-down roping, steer roping and barrel racing.

Riders grasp a flat braided rope, or bull rope, which is wrapped around the bull’s chest behind its front legs and over its withers. The tail of the rope is threaded through a loop on the other end and tightened around the bull.

The rider then wraps the tail around his hand to secure his grip.

In roughstock events, the goal of the rider is to stay on a bucki king i bull or bronc for eight seconds and pits his ski kills i against that of the animal. In timed events, participants go against the clock to get the shortest time as well as against other contestants.

Rodeo events are much more involved than dealing

Size, agility and powers is what creates the danger, and excitement, of bull riding.

Once ready, the cowboy will nod and the chute gate will swing open and he and the bull will explode into the arena. The rider must attempt to stay on the bull using only one hand to hang on for eight seconds while the bull

bucks, turns, jumps and twists. tw w The rider’s other hand must not touch the bull.

Two judges each score the rider’s performance and the bull’s performance with each able to earn up to 50 points. The points are then combined and averaged for a final score of the ride.

Bareback Riding While one would think that bull riders would be considered the ones who would sustain the most physical damage in rodeo, it’s actually the bareback riders who endure the most abuse, suffer more injuries and sustain more long-term damage than all other rodeo athletes.

In bareback riding, a cowboy will mount a bronc using only a rigging made of leather. The rigging looks like a handle of a suitcase and is placed atop the horse’s withers and secured with a cinch.

Once the bronc and its rider emerge from the chute, the rider must have both spurs touching the horse’s shoulders until the horse’s feet hit the ground after the initial move from the chute.This is called “marki king i out” and if the rider fails to do so, he will be disqualified.

As the bronc bucks, the rider will pull his knees up, rolling his spurs on the horse’s shoulders. As the horse hits the ground, the rider will straighten his legs back out.

Riders are judged on their spurring technique, the degree to which their toes remain turned out while spurring and the rider’s determination to “take whatever might come during his ride.”

As in bull riding, the cowboy can earn a max aximum x of 50 points and the horse can earn a max aximum x of 50 points.

Saddle Bronc Riding Saddle bronc riding is considered rodeo’s “classic event” that evolved from cowboys breaki king i and training horses.

In saddle bronc riding, every move the rider makes must be synchronized with the movement of the horse.

The objective is to create a fluid ride.

Riders sit atop a special saddle and only use a thick rein attached to the horse’s halter to hang on to. The cowboy can only use one hand to hold the rein to stay seated in the saddle. If he touches the horse or his own body with his free hand, he is disqualified.

As in bareback riding, saddle bronc riders must mark out their horse and if he misses his mark, he does not receive a score. Riders continuously spur the horse from its shoulders to the back of the saddle and must continue spurring throughout the eight-second ride.

Rides are scored based on the horse’s bucki king i action, the cowboy’s control of the horse and their spurring action for a combined total of up to 100 points.

and unpredictability, timed events are no less exciting and entertaining.

Now, here are the rules associated with the timed rodeo events.

Steer Wrestling Steer wrestlers are often referred to as “the giants” in rodeo due to their large stature, unlike bull and bronc riders where are typically shorter and more slender.

The event is the quickest event in rodeo with a world record sitting at 2.4 seconds. Yes, you read that right seconds.

Steer wrestlers, or “bulldoggers,” use their strength and technique to wrestle a steer to the ground. The steer generally weigh more than twice tw w a much as the cowboy and to add another challenge, both are often traveling at around 30 mph.

The event begins with the cowboy on horseback in a box behind a breakaway rope barrier that is attached to the steer.The steer gets a head start and as they reach the advantage point, the breakaway rope is released and the cowboy takes off in pursuit of the steer.

If the barrier is broken before the steer reaches the advantage point, the cowboy will be assessed a 10-second penalty.

As the cowboy reaches the steer, he slides off the right side of his galloping horse, hooks his right arm around the steer’s right horn, grasps the left horn with his left hand and using strength and leverage, slows the animal down, wrestling it to the ground. The steer must be on its side

with all four feet pointing in the same direction.

The steer wrestler who can get the steer down in the proper fashion in the quickest amount of time wins the competition.

In addition to the bulldogger, a “hazer,” another mounted cowboy, rides along the right side of the steer to keep it from veering off away from the steer wrestler.

The effort of the hazer can be just as important as that of the steer wrestler and sometimes hazers provide the steer wrestler with the use of one of their horses. The hazer often receives a fourth of the payout.

Team Roping Team roping requires close cooperation and timing betw tween w tw two w highly ski killed i riders and ropers — a header and a heeler.

Teams of ropers can be comprised of men and women and the sport is a popular event for couples who enjoy participating in rodeo together.

Team ropers start the competition from boxes on each side of the chute from where the steer will enter the arena.

As with steer wrestling, ropers must be sure to not break the barrier until the steer has reached its advantage point.

If the barrier is broken, the team will receive a devastating 10-second penalty.

Barrel Racing

The header is the first to take off after the steer with the heeler following shortly behind.The header ropes the steer around the head, neck or horns and uses their horse to turn the steer to the left to expose its hind legs to the heeler. The heeler then attempts to rope both hind legs.

If the heeler catches only one foot, the team will receive a 5-second penalty.

Barrel racing has no judges, which means that time is the determining factor for competitors’ success.

Once the cowboys catch the steer and there is no slack in the rope and the ropers’horses are facing each other the clock is stopped and that determines the team’s official score.

Tie Down Roping This event requires cowboys to be a good horseman and fast sprinter as well as being accurate with a rope.

This event is geared toward the cowgirls and is dependent on the cowgirl and her horse’s speed and agility.

For the event, three barrels are placed in the arena in a cloverleaf pattern. The rider makes a run around the barrels and back to the starting point as fast as she can.

Tipping a barrel is ok, however, if the barrel falls over, the rider is assessed a 5-second penalty.

An electronic eye marks when the rider crosses into the arena and stops when she makes her return back to the starting line.The time is then recorded as the rider’s score.

Over the years, barrel racers have become so quick that the sport is timed to the hundredth of a second.

Tie down roping again starts with the cowboy mounted on his horse in a box behind a breakaway barrier rope.

One end of the breakaway rope is looped around the calf ’s neck and once the calf reaches the advantage point, the breakaway barrier is released the cowboy can begin chase.

If the cowboy breaks the barrier, a 10-second penalty is added to their time.

As soon as the cowboy throws his loop and catches the calf, the horse is trained to come to a stop. The cowboy then dismounts, runs to the calf, picks it up, also called flanki king, i and get the calf to the ground on its side. Once the calf is flanked, the roper ties any three legs together with a pigging string — a short, looped rope he holds in his teeth during the run.

As the cowboy is tying the calf ’s legs, the horse must pull back hard enough to eliminate any slack in the rope without dragging the calf.

When the calf is tied, the roper throws his hands up in the air, returns to his horse to remount, rides forward to add slack in the rope and see if the calf remains tied.

If the calf kicks free the roper receives no time. If the calf stays tied, then the clock is stopped and the roper receives a score.

No matter if you’re a newbie to the sport of rodeo or a veteran, there’s something that will catch everyone’s interest.

’’Getting dirty together’’ It takes a lot to create the best grounds around for the Greeley Stampede

rom award-winning dirt and clean stands to well manicured lawns and setting up for various arena events, it takes a lot of helping hands to get what needs to be done done over the 12 days of the annual Greeley Stampede.

Jeff Reck is the Grounds chairman for the Greeley Stampede committee and oversees all of the work on the grounds and in the arena throughout the event.

“So if we need equipment like loaders, tractors, anything like that, it’s my job to get it together and talk to a bunch of equipment vendors and dealers and get that stuff lined up and work with them to donate and be part 28 · Greeley Stampede

of our Gold Spur program,” Reck explained. “Anything that needs to be done or moved, like light towers in the park, it’s my job to take care of that.

When it comes to the dirt in the arena, one would think that just any old dirt would suffice, but not so, says Reck.

The dirt in the Greeley Stampede Arena is comprised of a mixture of clay, sand and silt.

“Ultimately, it’s how we prepare it for this arena. We’ve had volunteers working out here for 20 plus years and these guys know the dirt better than anybody around here,” Reck explained. “It’s a matter of getting it tilled the correct way, having the right amount of water at greeleytribune.com

certain times after a rodeo. We will come back in, rework the ground, add water and get it prepared for the next morning.”

The goal for Reck and the grounds team is to have little to no dust during an event.

“If there’s dust then that means it’s too dry. But if you see a horse slip, or an animal slip, then we may have put too much water on,” he said. “We care about the welfare of the animal and the person riding the animal. We want good footing for the animal but also a safe landing for contestants.”

The arena floor has a solid base under about four to six inches of “fluff ”that sits on top, Reck said.The fluff allows horses to dig in and move well.

As agility and traction are key factors in barrel racing, these athletes tend to be the most vocal when it comes to maki king i comments about the quality of dirt in a rodeo arena.

“They are a timed event where their horse has to get around three barrels in the quickest amount of time,” Reck said.“So if their horse is losing traction because the dirt is either too deep or too shallow, then that is going to cause them time and possibly miss out on money.”

Keeping the dirt clean and free of debris and rocks is also a top priority. That’s why the popular demolition

derby takes place after the rodeo events have wrapped up.

“We have to be pretty meticulous about picking everything up, especially metal and small metal objects like screws and nails,” Reck said. “We need to leave the arena better than we got it and stuff like that can hurt animals and riders.”

Working the dirt doesn’t stop when the Stampede rides out of town. Grounds keepers from the city come each week and till the dirt, removing rocks and other debris, keeping the dirt clean until the next year’s Greeley Stampede.

Reck and his grounds crews aren’t just responsible for taki king i care of the dirt in the arena. The group also helps clean up the stands after the event and when the arena and park flooded last year prior to the Dwight Yoakam concert, Reck and crew were the ones frantically running around trying to get the water pumped out so that fans could attend the concert and carnival.

Reck was on his way to the Stampede when the downpour began.

“I was just sitting in Justin’s office and we stared at each other for about two tw w hours trying to come up with a game plan. After about the third hour of rain, finally it stopped,” Reck said. “I had made phone calls and got stuff prepared for doing stuff when we could and as we

could. It was enough to get the arena clear, for the most part. Unfortunately, we only got a quarter of the carnival opened up.”

Reck was able to finagle 10-12 pump trucks to help pump the water out of the arena and carnival area.There were areas of water as deep as 4-feet in some places of the carnival.

“We were surprised we had anything open that night,” he added.

In preparation for any rain at this year’s event, Reck has partnered up Big Creek Resources to be on standby should they need help pumping water out.

“They can move water even faster than trucks can do. God forbid we get another flood and do need their services, they are on standby,” Reck said.

And that half-eaten chicken wing that you decided to

just toss on the floor next to your seat? Well, there’s a crew that comes in after every event and cleans up the stands so that the next set of visitors can enjoy a concert or rodeo event in a clean arena.

“We work with the city of Greeley, they help us out with their employees and we have other volunteer programs,” Reck explained. “Northern Colorado Wrestling Club is going to be a big help for us this year. They are going to come in and clean after hours or the next morning.

They’ll empty trash cans, replace the bags and clean up the parki king i lots.”

The great part about the Greeley Stampede volunteer program is that groups that participate in it earn money for their organization.

The program experienced a shortage of volunteers last year, so committee members were out picking up trash and helping chip in to clean up the grounds.

“We learned that it was on a great job, fun job to do because the committee after concerts and rodeos, we were in there collecting trash on the ground and in the stands,” Reck said, laughing. “It is not an easy job and it makes us appreciative of those who do show up and take care of what we need.”

Whether you attend a concert, the rodeo or the demolition derby or not, you can’t miss the newest attraction to the Greeley Stampede Arena — the JBS Arena Stage.

The project was funded through a partnership betw tween w JBS, the City of Greeley and Weld County. Once completed, the project will cost more than $2.5 million.

The project initially began three years ago when Stampede staff decided that the event and arena needed to upgrade its stage to help attract larger acts to the event.

At 120-feet by 80-feet and standing 55-feet from the ground, the new stage is nearly twice tw w the size of the previous one.

“Eventually it will be two-stories, tw w but we are just trying to get this done first and in the future start on the other story,”Reck said.“It was important for us to get this done for the 100th as a present to the community.”

Reck, who has served in the grounds position on the committee for six years, will be retiring his rake and turning over the lead to Jerod Lichtenberg after the 2022 event wraps up.

Unlike the previous stage that was mobile, the new stage sits on a concrete foundation that took several sessions to build. The stage is fully enclosed and the bay doors can be opened or shut to protect the inside of the stage from weather.

“I’ll have summers a little more open or less meetings.

Who knows, I’ll probably find something else to do. I’m kii of a busy body, so I’ll find something to take up my kind time,”Reck said, laughing.“I enjoy our committee and the people that sit around that table. I can say, unequivocally, that everybody that sits around that table is here for this event and that’s awesome to be a part of. We are all in it together, getting dirty together.”

Ramps and two tw w large bay doors on the right side of the stage will allow bands to be able to bring in equipment while rodeo events are still taki king i place.

“Brad Paisley, I think, has a huge production so having this new stage is going to be a lot easier for everybody,” Reck said. “You’ve got five or six different semis coming in with equipment. You get all these bigger acts that do have that type of stuff and that’s what they want for their show. Now we actually have a stage that can provide that.”

The new stage will offer musicians access to stateof-the-art sound, and lighting systems and audience members on the arena floor and in the stands will be able to watch performances on two tw w large LED screens positioned on each side of the structure.
