Support Fremont County Nonprofits Fremont County is fortunate to have dozens of nonprofits that are vital to the community. From services for those in need of food and shelter to organizations that provide children a positive place to go to after school to fun events that have become yearly staples of the community, one thing has become clear: Fremont County would not be the same community without the contributions of these organizations.

Since 2012, the Daily Record has offered free advertising to these nonprofits because we see the need to support their causes. This section is another way for all of us as a community to help promote them. Boys & Girls Club of Fremont County, INC What they do: The Club opened their doors in June of 2011 with a roster of eight middle school students. By the end of that year, the participation had ballooned to 113 kids. Since then, satellite programs have opened throughout the county.

Their is mission is, “To inspire and enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible, and caring citizens.” The Club provides a safe, positive environment to learn and grow, supportive relationships with caring, adult professionals, and life-enhancing programs and character development experiences. The current director is Eric Thompson.

Cañon Literacy Center, INC What they do: The Center was founded in 2009 as a non-profit corporation. They have since evolved into a regional effort that receives support from a broad base of individual donors, businesses, corporations, schools, and more recently, foundations.

They are very proud to partner with the local Fremont County Schools to offer 3 semesters of tutoring on a year-round basis.

Their all-volunteer tutoring staff is the engine of our existence and has completed over 30,000 hours of community service since inception. Their mission is to, “empower children to become lifelong learners through literacy,” and their vision is, “to establish a permanent, sustainable, community-supported literacy initiative for the children of the Fremont County area.” The current director is Eileen Lakey.

Cañon City Music and Blossom Committee What they do: The first recorded mention of a festival in Cañon City occurred in 1860. By the 1880s, residents were celebrating Fruit Day as both an acknowledgment of their remarkable harvests and a way to acquaint neighboring communities with their bountiful products. The 1890s found Fruit Day being organized by the Fremont County Horticultural Society, with as many as 10,000 annual visitors enjoying this one-day event.

By 1948 more than 35,000 visitors made a rousing return to Canon City. Since that time, the Jaycees-sponsored Blossom Festival has consistently been Canon City’s longest and best-attended event in the city’s history. The Canon City Music & Blossom Festival Committee continues to host a parade, carnival, craft fair, music competitions and performances and more the first weekend of May every year.

Cañon City Pregnancy Center What they do: The Center’s mission is, “to provide pregnancy & family services to residents of Fremont County & the surrounding areas. We are here to support each family member with their emotional, physical, material & spiritual needs.” The strive to serve all who enter their doors with grace. Canon City Pregnancy Center (CCPC) has been serving needy families in our community for 35 years. During this time, CCPC has been expanding & will continue to empower families through educational opportunities, spiritual & emotional support, miscarriage & post-abortive support and of course, material items such as diapers, wipes, formula & baby food that help many families increase the reach of their budget. Crosses for Losses / My Neighbor’s Cupboard What they do: Crosses for Losses was founded in 2013 after the devastating Black Forest Fire. Founder and Director Amanda Suddoth took it as her personal mission to help provide for those less fortunate and those in need. My Neighbor’s Cupboard opened to both provide food and toiletry resources to those in need as well as offer a communal place for people to gather and enjoy one another. Crosses for Losses functions out of My Neighbor’s Cupboard as a disaster relief nonprofit. Should a natural disaster hit, whether it be local or not, Crosses for Losses springs into action to provide clothing, food, and to help rebuild whatever was destroyed.

Desert Waters Correctional Outreach What they do: DWCO was founded in 2003 by a handful of caring citizens in Florence, a city whose county housed 12 prisons – four federal and eight state, and a county jail. These citizens became aware of how psychologically and spiritually toxic the correctional work environment could be when Caterina Spinaris, Ph.D., LPC, began to offer professional counseling to corrections staff and their families in 2000.

Emmaus of the Rockies What they do: The Walk to Emmaus is an experience of Christian spiritual renewal and strengthening that begins with a three-day course in Christianity. It is an opportunity to meet Jesus Christ in a new way as God’s grace and love is revealed to you through other believers. The gathering was inspired by the original Walk to Emmaus, shared in Luke 24:13-35.

Several churches throughout Fremont County are member churches and include Christ Episcopal Church, Christian Family Fellowship, Evangelical Free, First Christian Church, First United Methodist Church, and Saint Michael’s Catholic Church.

The Equine Lameness Prevention Organization What they do: The E.L.P.O. is dedicated to questioning, monitoring, and improving upon practices regarding hoof care.

This organization was designed to be a place where horse owners, horse enthusiasts and equine professionals can go to get help, offer assistance to others, exchange ideas, and discuss the health & soundness of their equine companions.

They know from both treating and preventing lameness, that many solutions start from the ground up. Many of their contributor and members are part of the hoof care community, however they have input and participation from individuals that are involved in all aspect of equine care and stewardship.

Family Crisis Services, INC What they do: Their mission is, “dedicated to promoting safety and justice for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault through advocacy, support, and education.”

Domestic violence and sexual assault are all about the power and control of one person over another. The aftermath of these experiences can be devastating, confusing and overwhelming for the survivor and their loved ones. The trauma of these experiences impact survivors on a daily basis. The staff at Family Crisis Services, Inc. are available to support victims of sexual assault and domestic violence throughout the healing process, regardless of if the crime is reported to law enforcement.

Their vision is to bring cowboys and all those who enjoy the western lifestyle together and to support them in impacting their communities for the Kingdom of God.

By 2014, more than $1.3 million in locally raised funds and 40,000 hours of volunteer work had been invested in the restoration efforts, which included a new sewer line, fire suppression system, electrical upgrade, plumbing, heating and air conditioning.

The current F.A.C.T. Board is committed to seeing the theater fully restored. When totally finished, the renovated theater will have approximately 500 seats, a bar and concessions area, private social rooms on the second floor and restrooms on both floors. The Rialto Theater will serve Southern Colorado and the entire Royal Gorge region, providing live theater performances, concerts, dances, movies, among other attractions. The current President/Treasurer is Carolyn Solseth.

The theater was added to the Colorado State Register of Historical Places on March 10, 1993.

This diverse range of art is a reflection of the unique city of Florence. Their mission is “to promote, preserve, and pursue collaboration between the arts and the communities in Fremont County by fostering awareness and interest in the arts among youths and adults by inspiring, educating and engaging the community; supporting and encouraging artists of all media and ability; and utilizing art to enhance and enrich quality of life.”

Florence Elks Lodge 611 What they do: The Elks began in 1868 as a social club for minstrel show performers, called the “Jolly Corks”. It was established as a private club to elude New York City laws governing the opening hours of public taverns. Florence Architectural and Cultural Tradition What they do: The Florence Architectural and Cultural Tradition (FACT) group came together in 1992 in order to take ownership of the then-condemned Historic Rialto Theatre. FACT had the intention of restoring the theater and included Joyce Emory, pastor of the Presbyterian Church in Florence, who started the group that included Leopold (Pol) Saint-Paul, Sandy Alyward, John and Pamm Maxwell, Sam and Bobbi Carlsson, John and Carol Fox, and Peg and Tom Piltingsrud. They began raising funds to assist with their efforts. The roof had collapsed and major beams were sagging. Under the direction of Leopold Saint-Paul, an expert in art restoration and the former head of a Canon City museum, they started the process of restoring the theater. In 2000, Saint-Paul died and the project halted for nearly four years. F.A.C.T. then hired Suzanne Phipps.

Jack and Debbie Gaudin established the organization and Jack travels travels internationally casting vision to fulfill the Great Commission of Jesus Christ to go and make disciples of all nations by empowering national church leaders to evangelize and disciple their own nations. Other multipurpose spaces on the lower level are used for classrooms, exhibits, performances, and workshop space. The Wendell H. Black Memorial Arts Library houses a collection of of over 300 books dealing with art history, the lives and works of artists, as well as books on art techniques. Fremont Community Foundation What they do: Founded in 1999, Fremont Community Foundation is an all-volunteer board of community members dedicated to improving the quality of life for those in need in Fremont County by financially supporting community non-profit organizations. They do that by organizing and promoting fun, community events such as Royal Gorge Whitewater Festival, Flash Back on Main Street and Cajun Crawl, that raise the funds they use to help area non-profits meet their budget shortfall, provide new programming or help support existing programs, all with the mission of improving the lives of those in need throughout the community. Fremont Community Foundation also manages education scholarship funds on behalf of Fremont County. The Colorado Opportunity Scholarship Initiative (COSI) is a state program that provides a 1-1 match for education grants awarded to underserved Colorado students to continue their education in Colorado. The current president is Dawn Schmittle.

Meetings for members are programs presented with historical content at the Steeple Event Center, 7th and Macon, Cañon City, CO. These meetings are held at 2:00 PM six times a year on the third Sunday of January, March, May, July, September and November. Everyone is invited.

Their hospice team includes nurses, certified nursing assistants, chaplains, medical social workers, and volunteers all working under the direction of each patient’s physician.

The organization was founded in 2006 by Charlene Seaney and Marie Downer. It has grown from a staff of three to 15. The current administrator and president is Michelle Quinn, clinical director is Lisa Larsen and Chairmen is Cathy Riggorozzi.

The corporation helps pay counselors and other

mental health professionals and makes annual contributions for preschool progression in the county. The board consists of seven people, four of which work directly for the school district and three of which are early childhood professionals and/or community members. The current director is Adam Hartman.

Its membership consists of professionally trained searchers, technical rope rescue and swiftwater rescue technicians, emergency medical technicians and first responders, as well as technical search and rescue management personnel.

Fremont Search and Rescue has been in continuous operation since 1967 serving all of Fremont County and the many visitors to our area. The current team consists of approximately 25 professionally trained volunteers who are dispatched by the Sheriff’s Office when their services are needed for urban and back country searches, rescues of ill or injured individuals in remote areas, and recoveries. The Team is on-call 365/24/7 and trains year round in a variety of disciplines, including Technical Ropes, Tracking, K-9, Swiftwater, Alpine/Avalanche, navigation, mapping and medical skills. Sgt. Troy Johnston is the Sheriff’s Office SAR Coordinator. The Team is governed by a 7-member Board of Directors. The current Commander is Dustin Elliott and Team Captain is Kris Hegler.

Fremont Library District What they do: Friends provide financial and moral support to the John C. Fremont Library. Money raised by this group will be used to help fund various library programs such as The Summer Reading, Early Literacy, and Teen Programs, as well as a future expansion and building projects for our rapidly growing library. Garden Park Paleontology Society What they do: Founded in 1991 by Pat Monaco and Donna Engard, the society has been active in the community ever since. Initially, the society was responsible for helping put together the Dinosaur Depot in Canon City that was open 1995-2013. After the Depot was closed, the society continued to provide classes and tours to those interested in paleontology. In 2016, the Royal Gorge Dinosaur Experience was opened to the public and the society was invited to formally occupy and run the lab—which they do to this day.

Today the Golden Age Center provides meals 5 days a week, a transit service 5 days a week to Canon City, Florence and Penrose. They have numerous activities and groups that meet each week and serve 420 members in the community. They are proud to be part of such a wonderful community and hope to continue to not only serve the seniors but the community as a whole for many generations to come. Their mission is to prevent/reduce the occurrence of unhealthy coping, mental and physical illness for individuals of all ages, walks of life (socioeconomic status), and geographical locations through inclusive cultural understanding and change. Through equity of access to resources (such as stigma-free mental health/ behavioral health, STEAM Education, cooking & nutritional education) their research not only shows a reduction in substance abuse and misuse and patterns of unhealthy coping mechanisms of anxiety, depression, and suicidal ideation; it also shows a reduction in chronic illnesses such as obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. Habitat for Humanity of Fremont County What they do: Habitat for Humanity of Fremont County is part of a global, nonprofit housing organization operated on Christian principles that seeks to put God’s love into action by building homes, communities and hope. Habitat for Humanity of Fremont County is dedicated to eliminating substandard housing locally and worldwide through constructing, rehabilitating and preserving homes; by advocating for fair and just housing policies; and by providing training and access to resources to help families improve their shelter conditions.

Habitat for Humanity was founded on the conviction that every man, woman and child should have a simple, durable place to live in dignity and safety, and that decent shelter in decent communities should be a matter of conscience and action for all. Fremont County Nonprofits A-Z H What they do: The Howard Volunteer Fire Howard Volunteer Fire Department

Department is committed firmly to their mission no matter the circumstances they face. Their mission is to suppress fires, train and equip local residents as volunteer firefighters, to educate the public in fire safety, to assist the local ambulance service, to provide a variety of community support when requested, and provide mutual aid with local fire districts and BLM/USFS. They are 100% volunteer driven and rely on 100% community donations to operate. The department was formed in 1962 by a small group of Howard residents. Harold Willoughby and Denzel Goodwin were listed on the charter.

The first “fire truck” was a pick-up truck. In the years that followed they were loaned a Forestry Service truck from the state. In the summer of 1994, they acquired a 1949 4X4 fire truck. After putting a newer larger engine in it, the “Red Truck” (as it was called) became the flagship of the fleet. They now have several more “modern” trucks, but the Red Truck holds a special place in their hearts and it now sits at Station 1. Their first firehouse was the Willoughby dugout on Co Rd 45 & Co Rd 4. It is still used for storage. The current fire chief is Dan Ogden.

by Cañon City businessman and animal advocate, Ralph J. Wann, his wife Hazel, and close friend Grace Green, the Humane Society of Fremont County (aka Cañon City Humane Society) was established as an independent, nonprofit organization with a mission to “provide refuge for the hurt and homeless, to prevent neglect and cruelty, to promote humane education and, by doing so, to enrich our own lives.”

Thanks to the generous support provided by Mr. Wann during his lifetime, and later through the Ralph J. Wann Foundation, the Humane Society of Fremont County has been able to provide shelter and care to thousands of homeless and stray animals since 1950.

The shelter was founded in memory of Mr. Wann’s dog, Tippy, who lived to be 21. Tippy became depressed and refused to eat during a trip Mr. Wann took to Europe. Distressed, Mr. Wann cut short his trip and returned home. The idea to build an animal shelter took root during that time frame.

JJ’S Helping Paws What they do: The purpose of JJ’s Helping Paws is to prevent cruelty to animals, prevent homelessness, abuse, abandonment or unwanted animals and improve public education about the benefits of spay and neutering. JJ’s provides approximately 1,300 spay/neuter surgeries a year for Fremont County cats and dogs. JJ’s has an active low-cost spay/neuter program, trap, neuter and return program and a low-cost vaccination program with approximately 2,200 low-cost vaccines provided annually. They have a low-cost pit bull spay/neuter program, cat transfer program, PACFA license and a cat food bank, providing food for approximately 600 cats daily. JJ’s rescues about 300 cats each year.

O What they do: The Orchard of Hope Orchard of Hope Foundation

Foundation was established to raise funds for cancer champions and/or their families in Fremont County. The Orchard of Hope Foundation is a non-profit, 501(c)3 organization that is dedicated to improving the quality of life for cancer champions in Fremont County. Three Cañon City couples formed the Orchard of Hope Foundation in early 2001. One of the founding members, Sandi Allen, was a cancer survivor, giving insight into the needs of cancer patients during the treatment and recovery process. The small group started by scheduling two major fundraisers each year to assist local individuals with a diagnosis of cancer. Now, the Orchard of Hope Foundation is guided by a working board of directors, who strive to keep the Foundation rooted in the original vision of the founding members.
