Springdoesn’texactlyunfoldintheRockyMountains accordingtothetraditional calendarinthenorthern hemisphere.Becauseofthe elevationofEstes,7,523feet abovesealevel,winterhangs onalittlelonger,andspring rollsoutslowly.
Seasonedgardenersknow nottoputoutcontainerplantingsuntilafterMemorialDay weekendintheEstesValley becausethecoolnights,which candipintothe30sthroughoutMay,andevensnowshowerscanthwarteventhebest ofgreenthumbs.
Signsofnewlifeemerge slowlyaswillowbranches showthecolorsofnew growth.Bighornsheepcome outofhidingandcanbeseen intheBigThompsonCanyon andalongFallRiverRoad. Deerandelkshowuplookingliketheyneedabathand ashave.Finally,bythefrst ofJune,ornamentaltrees, foweringbushes,andtulip bulbsburstforthwithcolors,followedbyColoradocolumbine(Aquilegiacaerulea) andShort fowerIndianpaintbrush(Castillejapuberula) struttingtheirstuf.

BecauseEstesParkHealth hasbeenfundedthrough taxes,thevotersinthespecialtaxingdistrictknown astheParkHospitalDistrict mustweighinonwhetheror nottoauthorizetheboard ofdirectorstomoveforward withamulti-yearfscalnegotiation.
AgroupofEstesParkresidentsplantedtheseedsto establishalocalhospital inthespringof19 .They formedasteeringcommitteeandlaunchedapetition drivethatgatheredmore than 20signaturesofregisteredvoterswhosupported bringingahospitaltothe
Estes alley.Atthetime, 0 signatureswereneededfor apetitioneforttoavoidthe expenseofanelection.
TheParkHospitalDistrictwasestablishedinDecember19 bycourtorder aftertheLarimerCounty Commissionersapprovedthe steeringcommittee’splan. Severalcommunityfundraiserswereheld,andThe EstesParkTrailranarticlesandeditorialssupportingthehospitalplant.The newspaperevenconducted asubscriptiondriveanddonatedtheproceedstothe hospitalfund.
InJanuary19 9,the newlyformedboardofdirectorshelditsfrstformalmeeting.Thatsame month,apublicannouncementwasmadethatRoger nutssondonated 100,000 inhislatewife’smemory.A guild,theElizabeth nutssonAuxiliary theforerunnertotheEstesParkHealth oundation wasformed in19 2,andaftermuchdelay,groundwasfnallybrokenin19 4.
TheElizabeth nutsson MemorialHospital later renamedtheEstesPark MedicalCenterandthenEstesParkHealth openedits doorsonApril1 ,19 .The costoftheproject, 1.2million,wasfundedbyacombinationofprivatedonations anda 900,000bondissue supportedbythevotersof theParkHospitalDistrict.
Whenthehospital opened,ithad1 beds, twolaborbeds,twocribs, fvebassinets,onedelivery room,anoperatingroom, andanemergencydepartment.Sincethen,thehospitalgrewandexpandedtoincludeEMTservices,home
health,andhospicecare.In addition,from19 4to2021, EPHoperatedaskillednursinghome.
Healthcaredeliveryhas undergonemanychanges sincethehospitalopened 4 yearsago.Interestingly, thehospital’sestablishment parallelsthetimethatDr. Welbywasontelevision 19 9to19 .Liketherotary dialtelephone,theeraofthe small-townfamilydoctorin asolopracticehaspassed. Todaymostphysicianspracticeingroups,andmany doctorsarecorporateemployees.Toputthisinperspective,theAmericanMedicalAssociationreportsthat lessthan1 %ofdoctorstodayareinasolopractice.
Becauseofeconomies ofscaleandtheescalating healthcarecostsoverthe pastfvedecades,small,independenthospitalshave hadtofndnewoperating models,includinga liationswithlargerhealthcare systems,toremaininbusiness.
EstesParkHealthisa small,ruralhospital,and theeconomicdynamicsof thepastfewyears,includingtheCO ID-19pandemic, havetakenasubstantialtoll onindependenthospitals.
Accordingtoareportby theCenterforHealthcare ualityandPaymentReform CH PR ,anational policycenterfocusingon healthcarepaymentanddeliverysystems,morethan 100ruralhospitalshave closedoverthepastdecade, including19in2020and 10morebetween2021and 2022.Moreover,anadditional 00ruralhospitals nearly30%ofallruralhospitalsinthecountry are
atriskofclosinginthenear futurebecauseofpersistent fnanciallossesonpatient services.
In ationandworkforce shortagesaretwopiecesof thehealthcarefnancialpuzzle.Thebottomline,however,isthatruralhospitals aresimplynotpaidenough byprivateinsurancecarriers,Medicaid,orMedicare tofullycoverthecostofdeliveringservices.
Deliveringmedicalservicesinruralareasismore expensivebecauseofthe smallernumberofpatients served.Asmallruralhospitalwillhavefeweremergencyroomvisitsthana largerurbanhospitalsimplybecausetherearefewer residents,buttheminimum costofsta ngtheemergencyroom24 isthesame, sotheaveragecostpervisit intheruralhospitalwill behigher.Apaymentsucienttocoverthecostofa visittotheemergencyroom inalargehospitalcanfall shortofthecostatasmall ruralhospitalbecausemany healthinsurancecompanies justdonotpaywhatitactuallycoststoprovideservices.
Whileitisessentialfor peopletohavehealthinsurancetoprotectthemselves fnancially,lowmarginsor evenlossesonpatientswith privateinsurance,combinedwithlossesonMedicaidanduninsuredpatients, canforcesmallruralhospitalstoclose.
IfEstesParkHealthwere toa liatewithalarger healthcareprovider,there wouldbeseveralbenefts.

Men’smentalhealthisa growingtopicofdiscussion. AccordingtotheCDC,males makeup49%ofthepopulation,butnearly80%ofcompletedsuicides.It’snotjust suicide,though.Manymen aresuferinginawaythat culturecurrentlyhasnoway totalkaboutorunderstand. Notsurprisingly,thisleadsto manymenfeelingmisunderstoodandalone.
Men,therapywillnotmake youweak.Isitweaktogeta personaltrainertohelpyou makegainsinthegym?Of cour senot.Thereisnoteam whohasasingleplayerthat doeseverythingonhisown. EvenMichaelJordanneeded histeammatesonthecourt, orhecouldnotplayatall. TheMichaelJordansofthe worldunderstandthatindividualsuccessisalwaysbuilt withthehelpofothers.Rome wasn’tbuiltinadayorbyonly oneman.
Therapymakesyoustronger.Asatherapist,Ihelpclientsconfrontthethingsthat theyhavebeenavoiding.It
takesstrength,courage,and willpowertoconfrontwhatis lockedawayinyourownpersonalvault.Ifyoucatchyourselfsaying,“Ijustmovedon fromthat,”or“nomatterhow hardItrythingsjustdon’tget better,”thenthatisexactly thetopictodiscusswithyour therapist.
Howdoestherapywork?
Taketheideaofcourage.You needcouragetodoalmost anythingworthwhile.Many
ofyouhaveexperienceda coachorsomeoneyourespect oferingyouencouragement
whenfacingadifcultproblem.To“encourage”isliterallytoinsti llcourageinanotherperson.Yourcoach,father,teacher,orwhoeveryou admirecaneffectivelyencourageyouwhentheyunderstandyourstruggle,believein yourabilitytoovercomeyour challengesandsaytheright wordsattherighttimeinthe rightway.Thisiswhattherapistsaretrainedtodo,andwe takeourworkveryseriously.
Therapywillnotweaken you.Avoidingproblemswill weakenyou.Teamupwith atherapisttofndoutwhat frightensyou,de-motivates you,anddepressesyou.Then facethoseproblemswithyour therapistatyourside.Therapistsaretrainedtohelp,and weareeagertodoit.Wecan’t doitforyou,andyoucan’tdo italone,either.

SomeinEsteswillhave concernsaboutthecom-
munitylosingitscontrolof EPH.Therealconcern,however,shouldbeaboutkeepingEPHopen,andthebest waytoinsurethatisforEPH toformanafliationwitha largerhealthcareprovider.
Thecommunitymustrecognizethattoday’shealthcarelandscapeisdynamic andfardiferentthanwhen thehospitalwasestablished. Thingsaremovingfastbecausetoday’seconomyand itsinnovationsmovefast.
Ourhospitalmustbeagiletorespondfexiblytofnancialthreatsandopportunities.Votingyeson8Awill givethehospitalboardofdirectorstheauthoritytodo whattheyneedtodo.

Hewasabodybuilderin highschoolandcollege,as wellasamartialartsinstructor.InOctober2019on ahuntingtrip,Jontripped andfellnumeroustimes.He knewsomethingwasn’tright, andsoughtmedicalcare.Edy wasdiagnosedwithacollapseddiscandhadsurgery torepair.
Hebeganphysicaltherapy, andwhileheinitiallymade progress,Edyexperienceda declineinfunctionandanincreaseinpain.
Duringthenexttwoyears, EdyunderwenttwelveMRIs, threesetsofbrainscans, bloodpanels,CATscansand

X-raysalongwithaspinaltap. Nosourceofhissymptoms thatincludednumbnessand neuropathywerefound.
In2021,afterseeingtwelve diferentspecialists,EdyconnectedwithDr.DixonatAnschutzinAurora.DixonconductedandEMGthatleadto adiagnosisofALS.Edywas giventwo tofveyearstolive.
Therewasstillthematterofthespinaldiscinjury, andDr.Dixonperformedcorrectivesurgerythatchanged Edy’slife,allowinghimto becomeactiveandpainfree again.
Edywaspartofaclinical
trialthatwasrecentlydiscontinued.Helaughedand saidthatconfrmedwhathe wasdoingwithnaturaland plant-basedsupplementswas working.

SiliconValleyBank,thenation’s16th-largestbank,failed inMarchandtheFederalDepositInsuranceCorporation wasnamedthereceiver.The failureofthe40-year-oldinstitutionbecamethelargest bankcrashsincethe2008 financialcrisis,anditput nearly$175billionincustomerdepositsundertheregulator’scontrol.
ThecollapseofSiliconValleyBank(SVB)wascaused byacombinationoffactors.
First,thebankhado verextendeditselfintermsofits lendingpractices.Thisbank waswidelyusedwithstart-up venturecompaniesinSilicon Valley.Ithadmadeloansto manycompaniesthatwere unabletorepaythem,leaving thebankwithalargeamount ofbaddebtonitsbooks.
Secondly,thebankhadinvestedheavilyinriskyinvestmentsandlonger-datedsecurities,whichleftitexposed tomarketvolatilityandlarge losseswhensellingthelonger-datedsecurities.
Finally,theban khadnot setasideenoughfundsto coverdepositors’withdrawals whentheyneededthemmost. Asaresult,whencustomers begantogetnervousabout thebank’sliquiditytheybeganwithdrawingtheirfunds fromSVB,itwasunableto meettheirdemandsandeventuallycollapsed.
ThecollapseofSiliconValleyBank(SVB)hashadanimpactonbankingregulationin theU.S.TheFDICsteppedin toprotectdepositorsfrom potentiallosses.Currently, FDICinsuresaccountsupto
$250,000.Theproblemwith bankfailureofthissizeisthat manycustomers’accountsare businessaccountsthatcover payrolls.Ifthemoneydisappearsthencompaniescan’t payemployeesandyougeta snowballefect.TheFDIChas statedtheywillnowinsureall customerdeposits.
Thisisgoodthatcustomers’depositscanbemade whole,butthiscreatesaprecedentthatmaynotbeableto backoutof.Thereisanethicalandmoralargumentto bemadethatinsuringalldepos itstakenbySiliconValleyBank(SVB)couldcreate amoralhazard.Byguaranteeingthatalldepositsare fullyinsured,thegovernment couldreduceincentivesfor depositorstothoroughlyevaluatetheriskofinvestingtheir moneyinabank.Thiscould leadtofurtherriskyinvestments,suchaslendingmoney tocompanieswithhighdefaultrisks,whichwouldincreasethepotentiallossesincurredthatwouldbesimilar bySVBandnecessitateeven greatergovernmentbailouts toaddressthem.

Thegut,commonlyknown asthedigestivesystem, needstohavejusttheright balanceoftinybacteriaand othermicrobestobeconsideredhealthy.Thestateofour guttendstoafectthehealth ofjustabouteverypartof ourbody—whenthemicrobiomeisoutofbalanceit canleadtoavarietyofmentalandphysicalhealthproblemsrangingfromautoimmunedisorderstodepressionandanxiety.Whenthe gutishealthy,itcanhelppromotehappinessandwellbeingasitdictatesthestrength ofourimmunesystem,our moodandencouragesefectivedigestionthatisfreeof discomfort.
