Seed and Sage shared studio space now open

Seed and Sage Studio is a new addition to a unique community located in the Peak to Peak Plaza, where the businesses in the area all have their own distinct artisanal craft. The Seed and Sage Studio is a shared work space where artists can work, create and connect to a network of artists.

Located at 343 S. Saint Vrain Ave., opposite the street of Avant Garde Aleworks, is the Peak to Peak Plaza and where the new Seed and Sage Studio has opened. Recently the area has been through a

number of changes; Estes Valley Asphalt, Wendy’s Optical, Third One Barbershop, Peak Health and Greg Miles’ Frame Studio remain after the shuffle over the last year resulted in a wave of new shops in the Peak to Peak Plaza.

Explore Estes Park’s best Christmas light displays

One of my fondest memories from my childhood was driving around Haddonfield, N.J. at Christmastime with my father to look at the light displays. He grew up in the colonial town, which has a history that dates back to 1682 and is located about 15 miles from Philadelphia. The charm of the traditional holiday displays, with the red ribbons, white lights and boughs of holly and pine, are as vivid today as they were many decades ago.

When I saw the color change of the holiday light display in downtown Estes

Park — from the white, blue, purple and green of the past several years to the blankets of white covering the trees — my mind immediately returned to those cold December nights with my dad.

But the holiday lights don’t just bring cheer when strolling around downtown Estes Park. All across Estes Valley, there are lights in a full spectrum of colors adorning hotels, breweries, homes and shops.

Things to do in Estes Park on a visit during winter

For a small town in the Rocky Mountains, Estes Park holds a wide variety of things to do. Most people anticipate the outdoor adventures that can be experienced in this basecamp community for Rocky Mountain National Park, like snowshoeing, photography and backcountry skiing.

Many may not, however, anticipate the assortment of activities beyond the park boundaries to fill a visit to this quaint community nestled at the base of the Continental Divide.

My latest book which is due out next month — “100 Things to Do in Estes Park Before You Die” —says 100 things on the cover but there are actually more than 200 within the pages of book. The activities go beyond the park boundaries — and a few inside — to introduce visitors and locals alike to the history, culture, recreation, entertainment and dining options for all sorts of interests.

Of the more than 200 activities, these twelve reflect the ones I enjoy most on a winter’s day in Estes Park.

First, start with a sunrise photo shoot to capture the region’s beauty at Sprague Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park. This easy-to-access lake might require spikes on your feet to prevent slipping as you walk the flat, snow-packed trail around the lake but the fresh air and the views of the mountain peaks to the west that light up with the morning glow will start off any day the right way. (Thing #45) While in the park, stop at the former home of the Hidden Valley Ski Area to get a couple of runs in the powdery snow. The runs might

be on backcountry skis, snowshoes or a plastic sled but any method is sure to bring out the kid in snow enthusiasts of all ages. (Thing #62) To wind out a day in the park, book a tour or class with Rocky Mountain Conservancy. This non profit organization that supports Rocky Mountain National Park hosts classes and tours for a wide variety of interests, like snowshoeing, photography and avalanche awareness throughout the year. (Thing #47) Estes Park has a vibrant craft beverage scene with four breweries, two distilleries, a winery, a world-class whiskey bar, and a smattering Stanley Hotel is an iconic and historic destination in Estes of places to drink. The adult Park, Colorado beverage connoisseur is sure to find something appealing. Festive trees raise funds for Quota Club’s Loan Closet

The lobby of The Estes Park Resort feels like Santa’s workshop with 45 Christmas trees wrapped with colorful twinkling lights and decorated in holiday cheer of blue, purple, red, white and green.

The trees are part of the Estes Park Quota Club’s annual fundraiser to raise money to operate their Loan Closet, a service to provide durable medical equipment to locals and visitors for a temporary period of time.

The equipment includes such things as hospital beds, walkers, toilet risers, canes, crutches and more.

The fundraiser also helps Quota purchase ambulances for Estes Park Health, AEDs for Estes Park Police and Estes Valley businesses, hearing equipment for schools, and provide assistance for local youth, seniors and disadvantaged women and children.

This year’s trees, all purchased by Quota and then decorated by volunteers, include themes like Star Wars, birds, polar bears, travel, traditional Christmas, donuts, a rustic holiday, stuffed animals and fiber optic.

With the winds howling and the snow firmly covering the peaks of the surrounding mountains, it is time to start exploring the snowy trails.

Whether you are looking for a quick family friendly stroll to play in the snow or an all-day adventure into the backcountry, these trail options will offer an exhilarating opportunity to enjoy the outdoors in Estes Valley.

Lily Lake Located more than 1,000 feet higher than downtown Estes Park, Lily Lake is a pretty alpine destination in Rocky Mountain National Park easily accessed on Colorado Highway 7 south of Estes Park. At 8,930 feet, it sees more snow than in town and the water freezes sooner for a wintery scene appreciated by any visitor to Estes Park.

The easy trail around the lake only gains 29 feet of elevation over three-quarters of a mile. Passing willow bottoms, rocky shorelines and dramatic views of Longs Peak to the south, this hike gives winter explorers a chance to enjoy the snowy season at an easy pace.

The Art Center of Estes Park was established in 1987 and celebrates 36 years of community art exhibits. Located in the middle of Stanley Village Shopping Center between Safeway and Subway, the Art Center is dedicated to education and excellence in the visual arts, and is operated through artist and community volunteers, membership, sales and donations.

The Center now represents local and regional artists from across the Rocky Mountain area. Featuring the high-quality artwork of approximately 40 local Colorado artists in a broad selection of media. Whether you’re searching for a large piece of fine art or photography to enhance your home, or the perfect gift of jewelry, fiber, pottery or a notecard for a friend, the Art Center of Estes Park will have it.

“There are a lot of minor injuries and illnesses that don’t need emergency room attention but simply can be taken care of at urgent care,” said Elise Booth, EPH Urgent Care Family Nurse Practitioner.

“We identified a need in the community to fill some gaps for people who were either traveling or locals who couldn’t see their primary care providers. We also saw an opportunity that we could relieve some of the patient care done by the emergency department when people didn’t need to be there.”

The Estes Park Health Urgent Care opened in May of 2020. It’s conveniently located off Highway 34 at 420 Steamer Drive. The spacious, state-of-the art facility includes seven exam rooms, an x-ray suite, a pharmacy, an orthopedic room for splinting, testing equipment and — most importantly — a staff of professionals ready for whoever walks in the door.

“This is a very nice facility,” Dr. Cynthia DiLauro of EPH commented. “It’s large and the rooms are open and new and modern. Everything’s available to you. It’s accessible. And the staff here is wonderful. Everyone works

Dr. DiLauro is one of the internal medicine physicians at EPH. She covers some shifts at the Urgent Care on the weekends. DiLauro and the nurse practitioners, EMTs and paramedics who help patients address many common complaints.

“We see a lot of people with a sore throat,” Dr. DiLauro pointed out. “I would say overall probably pharyngitis. And then COVID symptoms have been more popular recently. We can do a rapid strep to rule out strep pharyngitis. We can give you a COVID test. And then we can do x-rays. We do start IVs sometimes because sometimes we see people with altitude related symptoms. Often oxygen if that’s appropriate. Anti-nausea drugs for sometimes related altitude symptoms. And then injuries, many injuries, whether it’s your elbow, your knee, from hiking and falling. Ankle sprains. Fractures. Fishhooks that maybe are caught in someone’s ear lobe.”

The staff at EPH Urgent Care says the variety of medical cases keeps them on their toes.

that starts in the same general vicinity, which dogs cannot use, the road into Upper Beaver Meadows follows the pavement that is open from spring to fall for vehicles.

When closed, however, dogs and their owners, cross-country skiers and hikers will find the route to be free of cars, generally quiet and lacking the dusty conditions experienced on a dry summer day.

This three-mile, in-and-out easy hike starts at the gate into Upper Beaver Meadows that is located just to the east of the first switchback along the Park Road near the Beaver Meadows entrance station.

T he route continues through the meadows with views of Longs Peak, Beaver Mountain and the peaks of the Continental Divide. The road ends at the official trailhead for Upper Beaver Meadows, where dogs are not permitted. The total three-mile, in-and-out trail takes about one hour to complete and only rises about 145 feet in elevation.

Chasm Falls In summertime, Chasm Falls is one of the most popular waterfalls in the park.

Easily accessible on Old Fall River Road, it only takes a short walk down some steep steps in summer to reach the falls.

In winter, however, Old Fall River Road is closed to vehicles, and the road into Endovalley is also closed past Alluvial Fan. These two winter closures make this a 5-mile roundtrip hike. The first one mile of this hike is along a flat road that gains only about 30 feet. The remaining 1.5 miles climb about 500 feet along Old Fall River Road before reaching the steep climb down 50 feet to the base of Chasm Falls.

Preparing for a Winter Hike For any winter hike, it is important to watch the weather to avoid being caught in a winter storm. Carry plenty of water, food, warm clothing and a GPS tracker to quickly assist with a search and rescue should that become necessary. Avoid wearing cotton clothing as it gets wet easily and stays wet. Keep in mind that tubes from water bladders inside of a backpack may freeze; keep them inside the bag or inside of a jacket to prevent the water from freezing. Foot traction, like microspikes or snowshoes, are also a must for winter hiking in RMNP. Enjoy the snow days!

The Estes Park area, however, never saw the riches of other mining districts, rather focusing more on the recreation opportunities provided by the surrounding mountains. Step into the pages of Estes Park’s history by visiting the Estes Park Museum, where visitors can learn about the characters of the region’s past — from the adventurous to the shrewd to the conservationists that shaped the town into what it is today. by F.O. Stanley and his wife, Flora, and opened in 1909.

But their summer home, located to the west of the ho-

tel, is five years older and still maintains a feel for the Stanley’s posh style of the time.

Used by the Stanley’s until his death in 1940, the home is now a museum that emphasizes and preserves the story about this influential couple that had a tremendous impact on Estes Park. (Thing #85) Finally, to round out a visit to Estes Park, and taste a blast of summer on a snowy winter day, why not try something that seems so out of place in the mountains — saltwater taffy. Developed on the East Coast, this gooey, melt-in-your-mouth treat has found a home in Estes Park with many shops selling the sugary snack but only two making the product in town.
