The Mad Moose offers new shopping experience

or Maureen McCann, a lost job turned into a dream opportunity.

Months after moving up from Loveland to start a new career in hospitality, she was furloughed, like so many were during the pandemic.

Feeling disappointed and unsure of what to do next, she began searching for new business opportunities. One afternoon last June, while enjoying a latte at Coffee on the Rocks with her sister, the idea of starting their own business began to formulate and what began as a far-off dream soon became reality.

It’s then that she learned The Mad Moose was for sale.

McCann had dreamed about owning a shop in town and had been a customer of The Mad Moose for years, stopping by whenever she was visiting.

“I love the name and the mountain furnishings and specialty cabin and home decor you can’t find in the downtown retail shops,” McCann says.

The opportunity was too good to pass up. She bought the store in Aug. 2020 along with partner Chris Tedford, John Floeter, and her sister Judy Floeter.

The new owners immediately went to work creating a more open floor plan with displays showcasing the rustic furniture and how each item can fit in the home. McCann says the store will continue to offer the same quality merchandise it is known for, from fine furnishings and bedding to home goods, lighting, sou-

If you have been in the shop recently, you may have noticed yet another change.

Shortly after they bought The Mad Moose, the new owners were offered the opportunity to acquire The Village Store, which was right next door. A bit sooner than they had anticipated, they decided to take a leap of faith and go for it. The Village Store is now The Mad Moose, all under one roof and one cohesive space.

décor, ideal for a mountain home or cozy cabin. And, of course, you can find plenty of whimsical moose items. With the acquisition, The Mad Moose will continue to sell men and women’s clothing, shoes and accessories along with souvenirs, T-shirts and must have items for the kiddos. The new owners know how valuable the two stores are to visitors and locals and they want to carry on with the specialty merchandise that customers have loved for many, many years.

Much of the artwork and products in the store come from local artists and

craftspeople, as well as manufacturers in nearby states. In addition, The Mad Moose is actively seeking and sourcing specialty products from small independent retailers such as Abound (helloabound.com) and Faire (faire.com) says McCann.

The one-of-a-kind merchandise and the downhome welcoming atmosphere is what makes The Mad Moose a must-stop shop for thousands of tourists and locals alike each year.

Both McCann and Tedford say they enjoy greeting the customers and helping them find what they are looking for.

You can almost always find the new owners on the showroom floor. While they do intend to hire more sales associates, especially for the high season, McCann says she and Tedford want to be in the store as much as possible.

“That matters to us. We want to connect with everyone who comes in and really showcase not only the store, but this great town. We are excited to be a part of this vibrant business community,” McCann says. “It really was a dream of mine and we are thrilled to be living here.”

The Mad Moose will have new signage soon as they have been working with a local graphic designer to help them create a new look that will incorporate their full offerings, which now includes the clothing and accessories.

Unique to previous years, this show will be performed outside the historic building. Carriage House at The Stanley being preserved

he Carriage House at The Stanley Hotel is the last building left in F.O. Stanley’s legacy that has yet to be preserved, until now. Out of his passion for the property’s history, John Cullen, owner of The Stanley, went through great lengths to keep the historic structure of the building including spending over $1 million to remove the roof piece by piece and place it back on

top. John’s mission was to preserve the historic nature of the building and create something F.O Stanley himself would be proud of. He is excited to share that the building will now serve the new purpose as a restaurant and performance venue, while creating over 70 new jobs in the Estes Valley.

Rocky Mountain National Park has timed entry permit reservations

ocky Mountain National Park implemented a new pilot temporary timed entry permit reservation system on May 28. Park staff are managing for significant increases in visitation to public lands in Colorado, including Rocky Mountain National Park, along with continued COVID-19 concerns, ongoing park seasonal staff shared housing challenges, reduced shuttle bus capacity and residual fire impacts in some areas of the park from historic fires in 2020.

There are two types of reservations available. One permit is for the Bear Lake Road Corridor, which will include the entire corridor and access to the rest of the park. This reservation period will be from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. The second permit will be for the rest of Rocky Mountain National Park, excluding the Bear Lake Road corridor. This reservation period will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Permits issued using the reservation system will allow park visitors to enter the park within two-hour windows of availability. The reservation system will apply to all areas of the park.

Reservations to enter the park are on sale through www.recreation.gov. The next release of reservations will be on June 1, for the month of July and any remaining days that have not been booked for June.

Initially, 25 percent of permits will be held and available for purchase the day prior at 5 p.m. through recreation.gov.

These are expected to sell out quickly and visitors are encouraged to plan ahead when possible.

This year’s pilot reservation system allows for a greater number of reservations per day. Reservations will be based on approximately 75 percent to 85 percent of the park’s total parking capacity.

Last year’s system was based on approximately 60 percent of the park’s total parking capacity. This system spreads use throughout the park to better utilize all parking/trailhead areas. This system will be adaptable to changes in visitation trends and public health concerns.

Last year, after being closed for two months amid the Covid-19 pandemic, Rocky Mountain National Park reopened in late May and was the first national park in the country to implement a temporary timed entry permit system to increase park access while providing the public a reasonable opportunity to comply with health guidelines. That timed entry permit system ended on October 12, 2020.

In 2020, Rocky Mountain National Park was the fourth most visited national park in the country with a 28 percent increase in visitation in November and a 38 percent increase in visitation in December over those months in 2019.

In February, to protect the health of those who live, work, and visit national parks and National Park Service (NPS) facilities, and in support of President Biden’s Executive Order on Protecting the Federal Workforce and Requiring Mask-Wearing the NPS implemented a mask requirement

for employees, visitors, partners and contractors. At Rocky Mountain National Park, face masks are required in all park buildings and facilities. Masks are also required on NPS-managed lands when physical distancing cannot be maintained, including narrow or busy trails, parking lots, pull-offs and overlooks.

When recreating, park visitors should follow local area and federal health orders, maintain social distance and avoid high-risk outdoor activities. Please do not visit if you are sick or were recently exposed to COVID-19. Park staff will continue to monitor all park functions to ensure that visitors adhere to CDC guidance for mitigating risks associated with the transmission of COVID-19 and take any additional steps necessary to protect public health.

101 years of guided hiking

T

he summer of 1920 was the first summer that Anna and Isabel Pifer stayed at YMCA of the Rockies. Their father was the YMCA secretary. They quickly became known as the “hikemasters” of the YMCA. Though they worked for free, guests often gifted them dinner after the hikes and the YMCA gifted them free baths in the bath house. Their hikes ranged from interpretive nature walks to summitting Long’s Peak from the Y grounds (26 miles and 6200 feet).

Carissa Streib brought her kids out for the ride. “It is such a fun activity for the kids, and they get to see a view they normally wouldn’t get to see without going on a t10-mile hike. So it allows them to see some good views.

It’s also an activity that doesn’t take a whole day either. You can still do other activities.” Her children say that the ride is “awesome!”

“I had no idea what to expect. I didn’t know what a mountain coaster was, and then when I got here and realized it was this alpine gravity-driven experience, I thought it was amazing. This is such a great attraction that tourists would want to see when they come here. I’m geeking out on this right now because I love the adrenaline rush.” Kara Franker says of her experience.

reathtaking mountain vistas welcomed a small crowd gathered Friday, May 21st, for the official ribbon cutting and grand opening of Estes Park’s newest family-friendly attraction, the Mustang Mountain Coaster, located at 1180 Dry Gulch Rd. A group of Estes Park locals attended the event.

Owner Cody Walker said a few brief words and then cut a red ribbon while he sat in one of the coasters.

“We are excited to bring something to families and youth in Estes. The view has always been here, but this is such a great way to experience it for people who cannot hike, and with the problems we are having with the National Park, it gives more opportunities. It allows more people to enjoy our community.” Walker said of the coaster’s grand opening. He adds with a smile, “It’s a $20 view, and the rides are free.”

Elkhorn Stables thrives at Dao House

hen renovations began in earnest at the Elkhorn Lodge, Elkhorn Stables had to move. This was no small undertaking. On April 1, Amy and Ivan Smith and their wranglers moved horses, saddles, halters, blankets and all of the gear to the new location at the Dao House, 6120 Hwy. 7 in Estes Park.

The stables at Dao House had not been in use since 2017.

“Instead of taking the year off,” Amy Smith said, “we decided to contact the Dao House and see, because we’ve got a huge following.

be able to increase our business through that time was phenomenal.”

In a time when people were avoiding other indoors, activities like horseback riding remained popular.

“They just wanted to be outdoors,” Smith comment-

ed. “A lot of times people come yearly to Estes for their vacations. And they come to see us every year. I recognize voices on the telephone. We have people all along the Front Range who will ride with us two and three times a month.”

At the Elkhorn Stables new location, riders can take one or two-hour rides on the Dao House’s 80-plus acres and in to the Roosevelt National Forest. After the first year of operation, the operation plans to add all-day rides and perhaps dinner rides.

“I didn’t grow up with horses,” Smith explained. “I didn’t start riding until I was in my teens. I didn’t even buy my first horse until I was in my late 20s. Even though horses were expensive and I didn’t have a lot of money, if a girl wants a horse, she’s going to figure out a way to pay for it. Now I have 43 horses and I have figures out a way to pay for it.”

Baldpate Inn now Seven Keys Lodge

The Powells had always dreamed about finding a place in the mountains and decided this strange time might be the right time to look for land.

“We literally spent all summer last year in negotiations, making up our minds,” Powell noted. “We came to an agreement. Then in October, we were afraid the property would burn down during the wildfires.”

The Powells and their

three children moved to the property in December of 2020.

“It’s been a whirlwind of events,” Powell remarked.

“We were able to sell our home in Park for the full price. We transferred our children from Douglas County Schools to Estes Park. We moved from a 4,900 square foot house to a 1,900 square foot house with three kids and a dog.”

While revamping some of the rooms, Seven Keys Lodge is renting out some of the cabins for the summer.

The famous Key Room is being turned into an upscale bar that be open to people staying at Seven Keys Lodge and the public as well, offering cocktails in the evenings.

“We really wanted it to have an Ernest Hemingway/ secluded in a lodge kind of feel,” Powell explained. “It’s dripping in history. We’ve got a big stone fireplace, keys hanging from the rafters and elk antlers to hold the spirits.

I’m hoping people will say, ‘I’m not going to a bar, I’m going for the experience.’”

The Powells are hoping to open the public areas and a few cabins on June 1.

They also have big plans for July through October when Seven Keys Lodge will host singer/songwriter events that will also be open to the public.

The Baldpate Inn which opened in 1917 will reopen in June with a new look and new owners, Mark and Meredith Powell.

The Powells closed on the property in December of 2020 and moved from Parker, Colo., to a home on the property off of Hwy. 7 at 4900 CO-7.

“We are the first owners in 104 years to live on site,” Meredith Powell said.

The Baldpate Inn was named after a popular mystery novel, play and films Seven Keys to Baldpate by Earl Derr Biggers.

According to Visit Estes Park, “Guests began bringing their own keys, from all over the world. The competition was so fierce to bring the most exotic key, the Maces began collecting them on display in the Inn’s famed Key Room. This was the beginning of the world’s largest key collection, which boasts over 20,000 keys to this day.”

The Baldpate Inn had been on the market for six years.

Lois Smith had owned it for 35 years and ran it as an inn plus a restaurant that served soup, salad and pies that was operational until October 2020.

The Powells visited Estes Park over Memorial Day 2020. Even though, they had visited the area before, they fell in love with Estes all over again. As they were leaving for home, they passed the property on Highway 7 and noticed the sign saying the Baldpate was for sale.

Two days later, the Powells came back to Estes Park to talk to the owner.

“You could call our decision to look into this property as a mixture of mid-life crisis and COVID crisis,” Powell said. COVID hit when we were going host a music

Estes Park Health offers urgent care to visitors and residents

W

hen Estes Park Health decided a couple of years ago to build Estes Park’s first dedicated Urgent Care Clinic, we could hardly have known what the fates had in store for 2020. As plans finalized and work progressed toward a May opening for Urgent Care, the world fell into the grip of COVID-19, and it became very difficult to imagine how long the pandemic might last and how severe it might become. We all know the story (so far), and we certainly hope that the vaccine continues to do its good work, and we all hope that the variants of the virus don’t take us backwards. EPH, of course, continues to urge everyone to stay smart and careful, and to continue to practice proper distancing and masking, and we’ll all get through this together.

The Urgent Care opened in late May 2020, and our first patients begin to roll in. The volume of patient traffic, like the volume of traffic to the town of Estes, was significantly less than expected.

Through the summer, EPH chose to keep the Urgent Care open for long hours, seven days a week, to be there when needed by our community and visitors. And then, of course, our other Colorado crisis began to take shape: The Cameron Peak Fire began to threaten Estes from the northwest, and later the north, though the primary effect of that fire ultimately became the prevailing smoke, sometimes terribly

thick in town, plaguing young and old alike. Another effect of that fire was to help motivate EPH to set up an emergency Incident Command operation, and to work through and update evacuation plans for all departments.

And it was a good thing that EPH did so. When the East Troublesome Creek Fire exploded in the third week in October, leading to the mandatory evacuation of Estes on October 22, those evacuation plans were set in motion, and with high urgency. The fires were already nipping close to the edge of town, and only the friendly winds, heroic work by an army of firefighters, and the snow of the following weekend saved Estes Park from a truly disastrous situation.

When we were able to return to Estes Park, the combination of the challenges of reopening the hospital

and the great financial losses of the year led to the decision to reduce open hours and days for the Urgent Care.

While we had anticipated that there would be a summer/winter change of rhythm for that clinic, the uniqueness of 2020 forced us to reduce hours more quickly than originally considered.

Now, with 2021 looking like it may be a more “normal” year for summer activity in Estes, we have high hopes that the Urgent Care business will be busier this year and will begin to provide the breadth and quality of service that we know it can provide for residents and visitors. The Urgent Care gives patients another option aside from the Emergency Department for injuries and illnesses. Often, the patient’s problem doesn’t requirean emergent level of care but does need medical attention.

open seven days a week; the current plan is to be open 11 AM to 7 PM for those seven days each week for the summer.

In addition to the Urgent Care Clinic, the building (just east of the Safeway gas station on the north side of Big Thompson Avenue, aka Highway 34) houses our Rehabilitative Services (physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy), which is now open five days a week. And, our Specialty Clinic visiting physicians (dermatology, urology, ear/nose/throat, and much more) also provide their services at the Urgent Care Center. The services, and dates and times for the various specialists, can be found on the eph.org website, as well as the open times for the Urgent Care.

The Urgent Care Clinic will be part of the fabric of healthcare here for years.

Fun City for the whole family

F

un City is most recognized for its rainbowcolored slides and its popular go-karts. Greg Davis bought Fun City in the spring of 2017 with his business partner Kevin Braun.

They added a few new things in the last couple of years like Inflatable Water Walking balls, a gem stone mining sluice and also brand new Go-Karts. They have also expanded their arcade room and added a redemption room where winners go to choose their prizes. New for 2021 they have added complimentar y WIFI for guests while visiting Fun City.

Visitors to Fun City can also play a water fight game where players shoot water from a water fun into a hole to race to the top for a chance to win a stuffed animal.

The Davis/Braun partnership has been working on updating and taking care of some maintenance issues in the off season.

Due to a pipe freezing in Januar y, it enabled them to make some significant upgrades to the interior and exterior of the main building.

They replaced all of the carpets for the 36-hole miniature golf course as well and put in a new parking lot and sign. The addition of a new point of sale computer system is making purchases easier and quicker for the customers. Another new feature is the all-day pass, where someone can have fun all day for one price.

For those who want to relax while their family

members are enjoying themselves, Fun City has installed Adirondack chairs.

Davis has worked in the entertainment industr y since 1997, mostly managing portable attractions like bounce houses and portable climbing walls.

He managed Fun City for two years before purchasing it. Braun had knows Davis for several years and worked for him during the summer.

With the summer season quickly approaching, Davis and Braun are hard at work making sure ever yone will have a great season at Fun City and are constantly exploring new attraction options for the future.

S

ticks N’ Stones owners, Chris and Val Jafferis, have been making and selling furniture for over 30 years. Their unique designs can be attributed to the amazing work that nature creates. From junipers to aspens, they design, cut, and polish beautiful pieces into functional tables, lamps, chairs, bed frames, and accessories.

Everything they make is one-of-a-kind! Chris specializes in live-edge organic wood furniture using wood sourced from around the United States. His furniture incorporates the natural beauty of the wood to create unique pieces of furniture and lamps.

All the aspen wood Jafferis use come right from the Estes Valley thanks to a partnership with Cheley Colorado Camps. Many of the pieces also include turquoise inlays, in what could very well be the most wonderful combination of sticks and stones one could imagine.

Jafferis got his start in Florida in 1973, at the time he sourced all of his products from the rivers of Northern Florida, where he found everything from unique woods to mastodon molars buried in the river silt.

Jafferis made his way to Estes Park in the late 1980s.

Like most, he was impressed with the aspen trees and twisted pines found in the valley. So he opened a retail store at 907 Moraine Ave. that featured these trees as furniture and home décor.

Boutique distillery to open in downtown Estes Park

hile the name Full Throttle Saloon may conjure up images of rowdy bikers, and the exciting events of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, Michael Ballard owns multiple brands and what he intends to bring to Elkhorn Avenue is dramatically different from the Saloon.

“The distillery and restaurant concept that we are developing will be unique to Estes Park. Bob and Tony’s Pizza has been a fantastic staple for the community, and while there will be changes, we’ll continue to serve their pizza and honor many of their traditions. We have four other boutique distilleries, including ones in Trimble, Tennessee and Deadwood, South Dakota.

Our distilleries offer tours and tastings, and we’ll sell everything from hats to hot sauces to candles. Full Throttle owns several brands, and this distillery will be very different than our bar concept in Sturgis.

We’re continuing to work through the logistics, but we’re excited to be joining the amazing community in Estes Park,” said Ballard.

A taste of tradition

A

n opportunity was presented to local business owner Erika Santana Gonzales when a space on the “golden block” of downtown Estes Park became available. Gonzales already owns Chelito’s Mexican Restaurant and the La Mexicana mini-market. Santana says that with the Chelito’s location was difficult for locals to visit in the summer season due to a lack of adequate parking in the area.

“It was just a dream, an idea and someone came to us offering us the space for the where the new restaurant is,” Gonzales said.

What are tacos? According to Gonzales, “You define tacos as just basically of the flavor of the meat with salsa. In Mexico, we use tortillas for everything and any dish we eat, like

There is ample, free parking at the Estes Park Visitor Center, with a four-story parking structure that has increased parking availability for downtown Estes Park, with a total of 412 spaces.

The structure is reducing emissions by allowing more people to park vehicles and quickly access the seasonal shuttle system (www.estes.org/shuttles) that is available at the Visitor Center. We also provide clean public restrooms and a water fountain for your convenience.

With the tourist season quickly approaching, Smith expects a busy summer season.

“People love to horseback here,” she said. “Colorado is still the frontier. When they come to our stables, we’ve got wranglers who are working cowboys.”

up in Estes Park and has lived her as an adult since 2006, called Elkhorn Stables a big draw in town.

“They run a good operation,” Kennedy stated. “If you haven’t been out to the Dao House, you need to come. It is some of the most beautiful country in the world. If you’re into horseback riding, you need to go try this out.”

“I was sad to leave the Elkhorn because my husband and I met there 11 years ago,” Smith noted. “When I pulled into the Dao House for the first time and walked into the barn and looked at Longs Peak, I thought, ‘This is it.’”

Elkhorn Stables works with the Colorado Horse Rescue Network. The Smith take in a lot of horses that cannot be adopted out. If the net-

work gets a horse that could be trained, they calls the Smiths who evaluate them and try them.

“If they work, great,” Smith said. “If they don’t, unfortunately we adopt them out to another home. We also hit the sale barn. We will buy horses before they hit the killer trucks, as we call them.”

collapsed house made of stone was a bungalow with a huge wrap-around deck and a massive fireplace that still stands. Sadly, the house caught fire and burned before it could be saved.

Metal decking has been placed in and around the Ruins so you can get a good idea of the amazing views Birch had of the Continental Divide Mountain and the surrounding mountains. One of the windows remains intact, providing a spectacular frame of the natural beauty beyond.

The trail dips down at this point and takes you to a feature called the Cabin. When the Ruins burned down, Birch started working on this cabin in the willows below the original house. A sturdy structure made of lodge pole pines, it served as a summer retreat for the Birch family until the 1980s.

Both the Cabin and the Ruins were placed on the State Register of Historic Places in 2001.

After the Cabin, the trail then circles back to the Trailhead. Along this section, I got to enjoy wonderful views of Lumpy Ridge and The Stanley Hotel.

When you get back to the Trailhead, you can take a path that cuts right through the center of the loop.

The entire loop and the trail that cuts across it is less than a mile, but you can do it several times as I did to get your heart rate up and get in some more steps. Parts of the trail are rocky and there are some ups and downs.

I saw abundant wildlife on the sunny day I took the trek, some small mammals to a multitude of birds. It was a peaceful way to while away the morning.

From here, we wound our way down some switchbacks surrounded by stunning rock walls to the water itself. The foot of the dam is fascinating with a water shoot so powerful, it’s hard not to stare and difficult to pull yourself away.

This protected watershed is managed and maintained by the City of Longmont. The reservoir provides that city with water. I have learned since this hike that the area was severely damaged in the 2013 flood. The preserve was closed for 643 days before it reopened to the public in June of 2015!

In total, our hike was about 4.7 miles and considered a moderate outing with an elevation gain of 605 feet.

Dogs are also allowed on this trail and we saw a lot of them. They must be kept on a leash. For a beautifully forested and dynamically different hike nearby, consider trying this trail.

Lake Estes Loop Trail

For a quick, scenic hike inside the town limits which you can make as leisurely or difficult as you want, try to Lake Estes Loop Trail. This is a 3.8-mile paved path that draws locals and visitors alike.This is a delightful way to feel part of the community during the pandemic. The bright sunny morning I went by myself, I delighted in the people of all ages enjoying the great outdoors, from cyclists to joggers to mothers pushing strollers.

You can start anywhere by parking in the lots near the lake or the Visitor Center. I parked at the Dog Park and walked under the highway bridge to begin.

Looking at the beautiful lake from the top of the hill, I watched the boaters and paddle boarders and people fishing from the edge of the lake.

An entire flock of migrating geese settled on the lake for a rest after making a honking ruckus during their landing.

After the brief climb, the trail takes you below the 70foot tall Olympus Dam through a meadow that often features wildlife. Walking along the edge of the dam back up toward the lake, I saw many couples – young and old – enjoying the brilliant blue mountain morning together.

At the eastern side of the lake, there are many more trees and what is the only measurable shade along the route.

Lake Estes is nearly a mileand-a-quarter long and a third of a mile wide. There are lovely vistas everywhere you look. I worked up a sweat and felt like a part of Estes Park in a way I hadn’t for a long time.

Just a short drive south of Estes Park near the Town of Ward is an excellent place to hike. The Brainard Lake Recreation Area, run by the U.S.D.A. elevation. The elevation gain during the 4.9-mile trek was about 400 feet. As autumn erupted in all of its glory, this trail was full of changing colors and beautiful water features. I was also treated to spiky peaks with patches of snow on top and beautiful streams.

We started on a paved road around Brainard Lake itself which reflected the clouds in the brilliant blue sky and mirrored the lovely trees that line the edges. A huge boulder near the shoreline is a favorite for visitors taking photos of themselves.

There are plenty of picnic tables here and restroom facilities.

When we reached the Long Lake Trailhead, the walk became more of a hike. The aptly named Long Lake is nestled in a beautiful part of the recreation area. You begin by walking past a sign for the Indian Peaks Wilderness boundary.

The Long Lake Loop (also called Jean Lunning Loop) is considered an easy hike that takes you 2.8 miles around the lake.

During the first part of the hike, you are nestled in trees and not walking right along the water. However, the views of the mountains beyond are stunning, from bald mountains to spiky mountain tops and even a glacier.

After rounding the tip of the very long lake, you begin a decent that takes you near the edge of the water. This was my favorite part of the trail. Many small inlets are perfect places to stop for a rest or a picnic.

When I read up on the hike, it said this is a prime spot for moose, though we did not see any the day were there.
