Mexican restaurant Casa Bonita in Lakewood has been a memorymaking institution for decades, filling children with countless sopapillas and dreams of plummeting from the top of a man-made, three-story indoor waterfall while people eat tacos, listen to Mariachi music and watch puppet shows around them. The Next Gallery, a nearby artist co-op, has been paying homage to the restaurant for the last three years.

This year’s show is taking artist submissions through Feb. 3, with a exhibition set for Feb. 21 through March 8.

When the Catacombs fired me for writing a snarky Colorado Daily column about what it’s like to be a bouncer, the guys at Easton helped me find a new job, this time at the original Foundry (I have no clue what that’s called now).

The Foundry was a different place in all types of ways.

Let’s just say the moves I practiced on soft mats in the gym worked perfectly in this rowdy club full of drunk college d-bags.

Eventually, I suffered an injury and then relocated.

Years later, out of boredom I started again. I’m a lot older and less flexible, but I still know some moves the young kids don’t. And that’s a big point of BJJ. A month ago, my boss at my university here in Korea asked if we had any ideas to teach our students. This would need to be a lecture

and activity, both to be taught in English. There was ice skating and, um, nothing else.

As a joke and to brainstorm, I said, BJJ. Not one of my other teachers was interested, but my boss was, so I prepared.

Last week I gave a lecture that nearly bored all my students and coworkers to death, but later we walked to my new BJJ gym and I showed some moves and how to protect yourself against a bigger person — which is pretty much what BJJ is all about.

Once the kids (and my boss) learned how easy it was to choke somebody unconscious (and how fun it is) they actually paid attention and enjoyed this lesson.

Now a few days later they may think I’m a badass, when in reality, I’m just a blue belt and not even close to a master. However, I received that belt from Easton BJJ in Boulder and will always be proud of that. This would have never happened without a big lie and Easton’s kindness.

Classes, which have been offered there since the spring of 2017, and are now increasing in popularity across the country, are geared toward all ages and all levels, and it’s gotten air time from CNN and National Geographic. An instructor at Mountain Flower once noted that “it’s taking something normal that people love and adding a unique twist.” Like so much of what goes on in this town.

Photography project helps BVSD Transition Program

T

he Boulder Valley School District Transitions Program works with students with disabilities ages 18-21 who have finished high school but require additional time to prepare for adulthood.

To help make this happen, the Transition Program collaborates with local businesses and nonprofits to provide on the job training for students. Through these unpaid work experiences, students not only increase their independence on the job but also allow them to learn other important work skills such as interpersonal communication and time management.

BVSD has partnered with many departments at the University of Colorado Boulder to set up work experiences. Through this partnership, Transition students are able to work alongside their CU peers at places such as Sewall Dining Hall, the CU Rec Center, the CU Bookstore,

In addition, the students with disabilities get a touch of the college experience as they often enjoy lunch at the UMC, bowl at the Connections, or run into former classmates on campus. All these opportunities allow these young adults to learn critical employment and life skills while taking part in the CU experience.

hether you’re angling for a part-time gig at a coffee shop or a summer internship at a swanky corporate office, it’s never too early to craft a stellar resume.

A resume is often your first chance to show a potential boss you’re the best fit for the job, so don’t be humble about your accomplishments. Be specific about your accomplishments — a 4.0 GPA is great, but did you also graduate in the top 1% of your class?

“Quantifying with numbers can make a resume look really sharp,” said Ben Wurzel, a manager in University of Colorado Boulder’s Office of Career Services.

Wurzel said one of the biggest mistakes students make when crafting a resume is leaving out work experience they think isn’t relevant to the job. But any job you’ve had is relevant, he said, because it proves you can hold a job.

Most employers, particularly for entry-level jobs, are less concerned with specific majors students have but more with the strengths they potentially bring to the table.

Wurzel recommends having a master resume with all your credentials on it, then creating a one-page resume that targets a specific job.

“Keep it simple and basic,” he said. “Stay away from anything that’s too flashy. One important thing to keep in mind is your resume is your marketing material. The goal is not to get the job, it’s to get the interview.”

Equally important is a cover letter that clearly and succinctly convinces a company you’re the best candidate for

the job. Don’t just restate what’s listed in your resume — look at what skills the job needs and give specific examples of how you have demonstrated those skills in previous jobs or experiences.

Be confident you’re the right fit and that confidence will come through to the person reading your letter.

You must write individual cover letters for each job you’re applying for — don’t send out mass mailings.

“Do not send out 100 of the same cover letters just changing names of company,” Wurzel said. “For jobs you really want, write a cover letter for each individual job.

It shows you’ve done your research and matched what you’ve got to offer with what they’re looking for.”

Check, double-check and triple-check your resume and letter for typos — reading starting at the last sentence and reading up often helps — and ask someone you trust to read over your resume and letter, particularly if they have experience in the field you’re pursuing.

Counselors in the Office of Career Services are also willing to take a look and review your efforts and can help you figure out what types of jobs you should apply for in the first place, Wurzel said.

If you can reach out to someone at the company you know through LinkedIn or the CU Alumni Association, all the better. Don’t be shy about asking for help.

“For those looking to enter the job market, it’s essential they understand their strengths, weaknesses, goals and values,” said Brad Graham, licensed professional counselor and founder of Collaborative Careers in Boulder.

Graduating seniors should be actively looking for information about the jobs they

are interested in by connecting with people in the industry, he said. Using LinkedIn is a great way to network and find out about potential job opportunities, Graham said, and many people end up finding their first jobs through the people they know.

A professional resume, a solid cover letter and refined interview techniques help market a job seeker better, but nothing beats active networking, Graham said.

Graham said he wants students to know the difference between a job and a career, and to remember: “You’re never too old to get an internship.”

Once you’re asked to interview for a position, make a short list of possible questions you might be asked.

Ask classmates to practice interviews with you, and challenge each other with questions that might come up. Often, interviewers want to judge your suitability for the position based on your education and experience and whether you’re willing to learn new skills.

If your phone interview goes well and you’re asked to an in-person interview, dress professionally — yes, if you need to ask, you should iron your shirt — and show up 10 minutes early.

Above all, remember it’s not the end of the world if you don’t get the job. Thank the hiring manager for their time and if you’re open to critique, ask what you could do to improve your chances of landing the next job.

Five things to do that aren’t skiing

or those who don’t ski or snowboard, winter in Colorado can feel slow — even boring at times.

But winter fun can be found in Colorado without having to strap waxed planks to your feet and slide down the face of a mountain at high speeds.

For one, you can take up the flatlander’s equivalent to skiing and go sledding, which is the almost the same thing except with less risk, less of a workout and a lot less expensive.

Drinking hot chocolate after building a snowman and launching snowballs at each other in the front yard is also an option.

So here are five nonskiing and nonsnowboarding options for winter recreation in Colorado:

Snowshowing, Indian Peaks Wilderness

Get your breath taken away — both by the high altitude and the amazing views of 12,000-foot peaks and some frozen mountain lakes — above Ward in the Indian Peaks Wilderness, a snowshoe enthusiast’s dream.

From the parking lot at the Brainard Gateway Trailhead, suit up in the warming hut if you like, then head out on showshoe-only trails toward the frozen lake itself (the backcountry skiers have their own trails, and you’ll have yours; just follow the signs).

The Colorado Mountain Club’s cabin on the north side of the lake is a good spot to check out for a quick warmup before you hike back, or go beyond to Long Lake.

Don’t ski or snowboard? Don’t worry. There’s plenty to do in the winter in Colorado, like skating at Denver’s Skyline Park.

Ice skating in Longmont, Louisville, Nederland, Denver No outdoor ice skating rinks in Boulder this year, but grab your skates (or rent some) and drive down to Longmont, Louisville, Denver, or take a high-altitude trek to Nederland for some nearby ice skating rinks.

Nederland boasts its Ice and Racquet Park at 500 Indian Peaks Drive as the largest outdoor rink in Colorado.

“Worst-case scenario, you can jump in your car,” Larsen said.

But if you’re set on hiking in, you can load as much junk onto a sled and tow it behind you over snowpack covering branches, rocks and other obstacles.

And because designated camping sites are hidden under that frosty layer, he said, there are more options and less competition when claiming your land.

For shelter, he said, you

could build an igloo or ice cave.

Larsen also recommends a fourseason tent, but he said a three-season tent will do if you stuff it with extra blankets or your comforter.

CU has camping stuff available to rent, including sleeping bags and pads, tents, cook stoves and rain pants.

He said most people think they have to buy the most cutting-edge gear to survive, “but you can also use your current equipment in a way that actually allows you a way to be somewhat comfortable.”

Victims of crimes that are nonemergencies — including theft, graffiti and traffic concerns — are encouraged to use the online system, which is easy and convenient for victims, who can file a report at colorado.edu/police/records-reports/ online-reporting-campus-incidents.

Keep these tips in mind and you should have a fun and memorable spring break.

Ice skate rentals are $3.50.

And in Denver, hit Downtown Denver Rink at Skyline Park on Arapahoe Street between 16th and 17th streets to skate. Admission is free, skate rentals are $7 for kids 12 and younger and $9 for those 13 and older.

Wildlife watching, Rocky Mountain National Park Without the cover of leaves on the trees the rest of the year, winter is one of the best times for viewing the park’s large animals. Elk, mule deer and moose are active in the park during the winter season, with dusk and

dawn being the best times for seeing full herds of elk in the meadows.

So grab your camera and trek into the mountains, and see if you can catch a shot that will hit calendars next year of the peaks, a frozen Boulder Falls or some ice-covered canyon walls.

Ice climbing

Make sure you have the right equipment and know how to use it before you try, but the Ouray Ice Park in southwestern Colorado is one of the best places in the world to get started climbing ice. If you don’t want to drive across the state, head to the popular Hidden Falls or Loch Vale Gorge, both in Rocky Mountain National Park. The closest ice to Boulder is east of Nederland in the Boulder Canyon.

“There’s no reason why you shouldn’t be comfortable being out there,” he said.

However, getting too warm can be a rookie mistake. He said sweaty pits can be the ultimate enemy because it fills in the layer of air needed for insulation and wets clothes that are less likely to dr y.

“As you warm up, stop and take those layers off,” Larsen said.

In Antarctica once, he said, he stripped down to a T-shirt because he was overheated, but he was careful to pull warmer layers on once he got chilly again.
