Gerald "Jerry" Benson 08/22/1929 - 11/24/2018

With great sadness, the nephew of Jerry announces his passing on Saturday, Nov 24, 2018, at the Bonaventure Nursing Home, Castle Rock, CO. He was born on August 22, 1929. He is survived by his twin brother, Garrett, sister, Gail, son, Eddie (Jeannean), daughters, Linda Thompson and Brenda White Eagle, nine grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren, and five great-greatgrandchildren. His wives, Claire, Marge, Betty, Melva, and Mary Frances, his siblings, Howard, Helen, Ruth, Jane Ellen, Alice, and Richard predeceased Jerry. He was a Korean veteran and combat infantryman. He was

wounded in combat three times and awarded the Purple Heart. He was a long-time resident of Canon City, CO and Lake Havasu, AZ, where he was a business owner, rabbit rancher, furniture-store owner, rental property owner, among other things. He was a Shriner and a member of the VFW Post and the FOE in Havasu. A Memorial Service was held on Saturday, Dec 1, 2018, at the Bonaventure Nursing home. His Funeral Service will be on Saturday, Dec 8, 2018, 10:00 am, at the Lake Havasu Mortuary, Lake Havasu AZ, and Committal Service at Lake Havasu Memorial Gardens, Lake Havasu, AZ.

Patricia "Trish" Greco

December 18, 1945 - November 28, 2018 Patricia "Trish" Greco, 72, passed away November 28, 2018 in Canon City. She was born in Detroit, Michigan to Raymond and Corrine (Thompson) Hering. A hairdresser by trade Trish loved taking care of her customers and treated them like family. She believed in AA and attending meetings faithfully and worked to encourage others in the program. Trish loved going out to eat and baking. She is survived by her daughter Amber

(David) Whitney of Penrose, son Gerald Cerveny, granddaughter Ashlee, Alex and Stella (Tyler), siblings Anita (Lundie) and Richard and great-granddaughter Addyson. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Frank Greco and sisters Renee and Diana. At her request cremation has taken place and no services will be held. Donna Jean Maxey

November 16, 1929 - December 1, 2018 Donna Jean Maxey, age 89, passed away peacefully on December 1, 2018. She was born November 16, 1929 in Pueblo, Colorado to Marion Wilson Pantier and Earl Pantier. She was preceded in death by her first born son David in 1994. She will always be remembered by her loving husband (James) and her 2 sons (Daniel and Douglas). Donna has 6 grandchildren by her 2 sons (Children of Daniel and Margret: Dana, Jason, Ryan, Kevin. Children of Douglas: David, Gillian). Donna graduated from Centennial High School

in 1947, and was married on March 21, 1952 in Pueblo, Colorado. Donna moved to Canon City in 1969 where she lived for the remainder of her life. She was a gifted pianist and played at countless gatherings for weddings, funerals, and religious ceremonies. Donna was the head piano player at the former Canon City Cristian Church (Gray's Family Church) for nearly 50 years. Donna's love and compassion will be dearly missed by all that knew her. The family has requested no flowers or donations.

Cleo Bertie Day

January 17, 1929 ~ December 1, 2018 Cleo Bertie (McColm) Day went to be with her Lord and Savior on December 1, 2018 at the age of 89. Cleo was born on January 17, 1929 in Lakin Kansas to Owen Bentley McColm and Maudie Louisa (Ginther) McColm. She was one of nine children. During her childhood she and her family lived in Poncha Springs, Mineral Hot Springs in the San Luis Valley, and ultimately settled in Florence. Cleo was homecoming queen and graduated from Florence High School in 1947. Cleo married Willis Day on October 11, 1947. Together they raised their seven children; Cathleen (George) Goodwin, Mitchell Day, Diane (John) Mahlberg, Jennifer (Jerry) Burtard, Colleen (Gary) Carroll, Kevin (Gayla) Day, and Judy (Randy) Sawyer. Throughout their 71 years of marriage, Cleo and Willis owned and operated several different businesses, including grocery stores/meat markets in the Canon City area, a game center in Florence and the Wetmore General Store in Wetmore, CO. Cleo was the first female Custer County Commissioner and served two terms. Cleo was a strong woman of faith and this was evident to everyone who had the pleasure of meeting her. Demonstrating compassion and love for others is how she lived her life every day. She loved being a grandmother and great-grandmother. Her dog, CC, was her "baby." Cleo was known for miles around for her homemade pies and chicken noodle soup.

She could make a meal out of nothing. A lot of people did not know that she was an excellent writer and poet. The whole family loved hearing her recite "Annie and Willie's Prayer" every Christmas Eve. Welcoming Cleo in Heaven is her parents, siblings, daughter, Judy and grandson, Jason Mahlberg. She is survived by her husband, Willis; her six children; sixteen grandchildren, David (Trena) Goodwin, Willis (Diana) Day, Jamie Mahlberg, Wendy (Tim) Conley, Carrie (Zeke) Porter, Heidi (Chad) Bair, Josh (Anna) Carroll, Joe Burtard, Cody Day, Dominic (Lora) Day, Jared Burtard, Meagan (Mike) Kilcoyne, Casey (Stephanie) Day, Kelly (Zach) Kruis, Caleb Sawyer, Katie Sawyer; and twenty five great-grandchildren. "My dear family, don't think of me as in the cold barren earth. Remember, I am with my Savior and my God and I can sing praises to him forever more. Come join me, I am waiting for you. - Love Mom" Mom- "We love you a bushel and a peck and a hug around the neck, a barrel and a heap and I am talking in my sleep about you." Funeral service, 10:00 a.m. Saturday December 8, 2018 at Evangelical Free Church. Burial will follow at Mountain Vale Cemetery in Canon City. The Lord welcomed our dad, Donald Richard Rocchio home 2-1-1936 to 11-27-18. He is survived by his three daughters Kristina Rychter (Jeff, Bobbi, Ryan and Jandi), Lisa Rocchio, Colleen Rocchio (Tim Eberhardt).

Danny Dean Jackson

November 10,1947 ~ November 24, 2018 On November 24, 2018, at 71 years of age, Danny Dean Jackson walked into the arms of his loving Lord and Savior, hearing Him say the words he had longed to hear all of his life, "Well done my good and faithful servant". Danny lived his life with love, a hug and a smile for everyone he met. Besides Jesus, the greatest love of his life was his wife of almost 52 years, Sandi Jackson. With her by his side he began his life of service in ministry to the Lord, he served as youth pastor and associate pastor through college then took his first church in Rawlins Wyoming in 1970. He founded Table Mountain Baptist/Calvary Fundamental in 1974 where he served for 20 years. The last almost 18 years he has served as a chaplain for the Colorado Department of Corrections. There are five things Danny truly loved in his life: 1) Jesus Christ, his Lord and Savior 2) his family, those which he is survived by, wife Sandi Jackson, Daughter Krystal (Jeff) Travis, Son Daniel (Ayami Sakaeda) Jackson, granddaughters; Karissa Travis, Hannah (Scott) Arndt, Grace Travis Grandson; Issac Travis great grandson;

Griffin Arndt, Father-in-law Russell Hamilton, sisters; Virginia (Bill) Johnson, Marion(Doug) Ludwig brother; Larry (Janie) Jackson sister-in-law Jan (Dan) Hummel and countless nieces and nephews. 3) Christmas, but he lived every holiday to its fullest. 4) All things Disney and Mickey Mouse 5) Food. Danny was a true Colorado native and except for the two years at his first church, he lived his whole life in Colorado. He graduated from Lakewood High School in 1965 and Denver Baptist Bible College in 1970. We love you as high as the mountains, as deep as the ocean, as wide as the sky, with our whole hearts and we know Jesus is loving you even more. His celebration of life service will be Friday December 7, 2018 at 2:00 pm at the Evangelical Free Church in Canon City Colorado. In his honor please wear something Christmassy or Disney. Laurie L.Christiansen Mendon May 22, 1955 - November 24, 2018

Laurie Lynn Christiansen Mendon, age 63, passed away peacefully on November 24th, 2018. She was born May 22nd, 1955 in to Nels and Ethel Christiansen in Beloit, Wisconsin. She was preceded in death by both her parents and her brother Neil, Belvidere, IL. She will forever be remembered by her husband Stephen and their son Collin. She is also survived by her brother, Lee and his wife, Anna, Oxnard, CA; her brother, Jerry and his wife Joan, Beloit, WI; and her brother, Steven and his wife Linda, Beloit, WI. Laurie was also blessed to be survived by all of their families extending multiple generations. Laurie graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1977 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing. Upon graduation, her first position was at Salida

Hospital in Colorado as a floor nurse. Her career was concentrated in child maternal health, retiring from WIC as director of the program encompassing four counties. Laurie was a gifted pianist and served as co-music director of Saint Michael parish in Canon City, CO. She will always be remembered for the love she gave to everyone she met and her infectious spirit. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday December 5th, 2018 at 11am at Saint Michael Catholic Church, 1016 Mystic Avenue Canon City, CO 81212. There will a reception to follow the services at the church. Internment and graveside services will be held at a later date in Wisconsin. Maggie Lee Francis Engle October 18, 1944 - November 21, 2018

Maggie was born October 18, 1944 to Donald and Lorraine (Bishop) Weber in Omaha, Nebraska. She had fond memories growing up in Bensen, Nebraska. Just outside of Omaha, during the "Happy Days" of the 1950's. In 1959 the family moved to Huntington Beach, California. Maggie married Frank Walker in 1961 and had three sons, Franke, Chad, and Bowen. The family resided in Chino, California where she had several horses, dogs, and various other critters. In the late afternoon and evening, Maggie would be out riding in the surrounding fields on her welsh mare "Brandy". In 1975 they moved to Canon City where they soon divorced. For the next seven years Maggie worked as a waitress in the Boulder area, raising her three boys alone. In 1982 Maggie married David Engle of Indiana, where they lived for five years before returning to Canon City in 1987. After receiving an annulment from her first marriage, Maggie was baptized into the Roman Catholic Church on October 6, 2007; two weeks later, she and David were remarried at St. Michaels Catholic Church in Canon City. Maggie was an accomplished artist in multiple mediums, oil, acrylics, pastel chalk, and sculpting in stone ware clay and paper mache'. During the 90's, she did art shows along the front range under her art name "M.L.SMOKE". Putting smiles on the faces of passersby with her " black and white" whimsical animals and figures, each with their own personality. She later switched to sculpting in paper mache' using much more vibrant colors. With the dawn of the

internet, Maggie again switched gears and started sculpting miniature (4") one of a kind fairies using oven baked clay and selling her creations on eBay, also under the name "M.L.SMOKE" There she enjoyed a small but loyal following of buyers for her work. After several years of successful selling the fairies, Maggie searched eBay again and found another category to create in. Ultra-miniature (1 1/2") doll house animals, each realistically made down to the eyeballs and fur. After a few years Maggie's health was beginning to decline and her hands were no longer "Rock steady" to continue sculpting. Always the homemaker, Maggie made all of our homes warm, cozy and inviting. Usually with little material to work with, and her eye for color and design, she could make a room visually pleasing and relaxing to be in. Maggie died peacefully at home with her husband of 36 years at her side. She was preceded in death by her parents, younger sister, Susan Keanaaina. And her first born son Franke. Maggie is survived be her husband David, sons; Chad Walker of Lafayette, CO, and Bowen Walker of Denver CO., grandson, Josh Walker, granddaughters; Jensen Walker and Taylor Fonseca, her sister Judith Houston and Brother Scott (Susie) Weber of California. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1:00 P.M. Thursday, December 6, 2018, at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Canon City, CO, Monsignor Jame King as Celebrant. Jewett’s Liquor celebrates grand opening of new location India Beach The Daily Record Jewett’s Liquor has been a well-established, family-owned business in Cañon City for more than 50 years. And now Jewett’s is ready to enter its next era at a new location. The owners of Jewett’s Liquor, Rick and Julie Wright, hosted the grand opening Friday on the 77th anniversary of Pearl Harbor. This was to honor Rick’s grandfather, Orville Wright, and Julie’s father, Russell Jewett, since they were both World War II veterans. Jewett’s grand opening included gift baskets awarded throughout the day, a tasting of wine, champagne, beer from Bristol Brewery and liquor from Distillery 291. Also for the grand opening, there were discounted prices on all beer, wine, and spirits. Moving to a new location for Jewett’s Liquor has been in the works since July 2017. The past location

had a land lease issue, which encouraged Jewett’s management to seek more options. Their new location is at 3120 East Main St., and the Wright couldn’t be more excited about their new property. The Wrights designed the new Jewett’s Liquor building themselves. The said their goal was to create an ambiance of a destination shopping experience in their store. The new Jewett’s building was constructed to have a strong western theme. Within the store, there is woodwork, etched lights and a massive mural. These highlighted features were made possible by Diorio Signs and artist Dixie Claire. Encouraged by the Western theme, the Tasting Room is designed to mimic an Old West saloon complete with saloon doors. The Wrights said they hope that their new and improved building will encourage more businesses to move into Cañon City and create more job

opportunities for community residents. The Wright’s families have run businesses in Cañon for more than 60 years. Jewett’s Liquor regularly empowers the community by supporting CASA, 4-H, the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and the employee councils of the Department of Corrections. Along with the new building, Jewett’s Liquor has started selling high-quality cigars because of multiple customer requests. A humidor has been installed to ensure the quality of the cigars, as well. Jewett’s Liquor is a long-standing business that has grown immensely through the years — the new location being the latest chapter. The hours of operation for Jewett’s Liquor is 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday. On Sundays, Jewett’s is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. For the holiday season, Jewett’s Liquor will be open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Christmas Eve and closed on Christmas Day.

HISTORIC PEABODY MANSION 403 Royal Gorge Boulevard Cañon City

Once the focal point of meetings with governors, financial managers, politicians and business leaders, the Peabody Mansion continues to be a hub of activity in downtown Cañon City. Built in the 1880s for James Clelland, the Victorian house set on a quiet, residential, tree-lined lane known as River Street, now Royal Gorge Boulevard. In 1875, James H. Peabody moved to Cañon City and married Clelland’s daughter. They were given the Peabody Mansion as a wedding present. Peabody was elected to a two-year term as governor while Frances Lillian Clelland Peabody took over the duties First Lady of Colorado. When Peabody died at age 65 in 1917, Mrs. Peabody sold the home, which served many different purposes until purchased by Darryl Biggerstaff in 1988. Biggerstaff later sold it to Cañon City as part of a downtown revitalization and urban renewal effort, known as the River Station Project. The Cañon City Chamber of Commerce took over its operation and purchased the building from Cañon City. As part of its use, the chamber has become a focal point for tourists coming into town, as well as businesses joining the organization. The Chamber now sees an opportunity to grow and relocate to another property. The Chamber’s board of directors will review offers on this wonderful and historic property. Notice of Public Comment Opportunity The Former Cotter Uranium Mill / Lincoln Park Superfund Site The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) and Colorado Legacy Land, LLC (CLL) are proposing to amend the existing Administrative Settlement Agreement and Order on Consent for Remedial Investigation/ Feasibility Study at the Lincoln Park Superfund Site. The amendment would allow the property owner, CLL, to request authorization from EPA, in coordination with CDPHE, to perform removal actions prior to the finalization of the Superfund Remedial Investigation/Feasibility Study. The Remedial Investigation/Feasibility Study is a significant step in the Superfund process whereby EPA determines the nature and extent of the contamination at a Superfund Site and develops potential remedial alternatives that will be protective of human health and the environment. Should CLL propose a removal action to the agencies prior to finalization of the Remedial Investigation/Feasibility Study, the agencies will determine whether the proposed action is necessary to protect human health and the environment; is consistent with Superfund law; and is consistent with future remedial actions at the site. This amendment to the Administrative Settlement Agreement and Order on Consent for Remedial Investigation/Feasibility Study at the Lincoln Park Superfund Site is subject to a public comment period of 60 days, from Monday December 10, 2018 to Thursday February 7, 2019. •
