Keith Michael Decker 1953 ~ 2019

Keith Michael Decker, local artist and long-time Cañon City resident, passed away during the early morning hours of August 19th after a two and half year battle with cancer. His mother, Dolores, and his two younger brothers Kurt and Karl were with him during his last days and hours.

Keith was a committed artist and created a significant body of work that was recognizably unique. His early background in building and renovation informed his later deliberate, artistic exploration into the profound nature of structure itself; By applying real property construction methods and interior finishing techniques to common household objects such as the bookshelf, wardrobe, table, mirror and clock, Keith's pieces were regarded as fine art while also maintaining both their intrinsic function and strong relationship to the whole structures within which they were placed. The wood, metal, paper and paint he used as the mediums for his work, as well as the hundreds of custom finishes and finishing

techniques he developed, added to the inherited bond of each piece to it's environment.

His signature piece, simple boxes of various sizes and finishes, transcended analogous comparisons to a room or a house and were instead, by direct association, a representation of home.

Over the years, Keith sold his work to several private collectors as well as showed in galleries and design studios but was just as likely to gift pieces to friends and family or make a trade with a local colleague for electrical or plumbing work to his house or studio.

Keith was kind and generous in private but uncompromising and outspoken in his search for truth and meaning.

He was an avid reader and led a life of artistic and spiritual exploration. His absence will have a profound effect on all who knew him most especially his family.

Larry Dean Woolsey August 21, 1968 ~ August 24, 2019

Larry Dean Woolsey, 51, passed away peacefully at home, in Canon City Saturday, August 24, 2019 after a courageous 9 year battle with cancer.

Larry was born on August 21, 1968 to Earl E. and Pauline L. (McCartney) Woolsey.

Larry attended school in Canon City and worked in the construction industry most of his working career but in recent years he really enjoyed working in the auction business with his brother Alan. Larry enjoyed traveling and spending time with family, especially with his special cousins, Steve, Bonnie, & Bubba Mitchum from South Carolina.

Larry married Margaret (Mitchum) Woolsey, December 14, 2014 in Canon City.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret; siblings, Ron (Amy) Woolsey, Linda (John) Sand, & Alan (Sherril) Woolsey; along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and his loveable pet dogs Michael & Aja. Larry was preceded in death by both parents; brother, Clyde; and daughter, Ciara.

— Approved Lease for Office Space at the Fremont County Airport with Justin Time Cargo, LLC effective Sept. 1.

— Proclaimed September for Kinship Care Month in Fremont County.

Artists’ Gallery to host First Friday reception

As the summer begins to wind down, The Artists’ Gallery invites the community and visitors to share an evening at the First Friday artist’s reception Sept. 6. From 5 to 8 p.m., the gallery will be welcoming guests for this popular monthly event, prominently featuring the work of three of our exceptionally talented artists.

Fead will present the most successful of these plein air works, plus some larger paintings inspired by Provincetown. She’ll also be offering fall painting classes to share what she gleaned from the Cape School of Art! Haley Atkinson will be displaying two of her favorite mediums—pen and ink “Tangle” drawings and Quilling.

Tangle is often described as “intentional doodling”; taking a pattern and repeating it to create a beautiful mosaic of shapes.

Haley said, “Starting with a subject that intrigues me, I fill the shape with a myriad of patterns and bring it to life with the addition of shading, giving my pieces depth and dimension. My signature in this medium has been the addition of one small splash of color to an otherwise black and white piece.”

Painter, Mary Cotner, states, “I am a watercolorist, and though I have tried different painting mediums, my love for the richness and fluidity of watercolor always brings me back.” Mary mainly paints on a paper called Yupo—a slick synthetic paper. “It can be very challenging, yet, a lot of fun!”

As the current President of the Southern Colorado Watercolor Society, Cotner has coordinated numerous art shows and events for her organization and other groups.

Complimentary refreshments are always served by member-artists, while guests mingle. Be sure to enter the drawing to win an item of original art!

On Sept. 15, Haley Atkinson will offer a beginner class at the gallery. Students will be making a beautiful snowflake ornament to take home. Materials and tools will be provided. The fee is $20 per student, with the class size limited to 12. Sign up information is available at the gallery.

Boys & Girls Club of Fremont County looks to expand in Florence India Beach The Daily Record

The Boys & Girls Club of Fremont County is raising funds to expand in Florence.

During Saturday’s ninth annual Bids N’ BBQ event at Harrison School, the club raised funds for a new location in Florence. Presently, the club is located at the former Fremont Middle School, which was purchased in May by Unbridled Holdings VIII, LLC. The club in Florence serves children from seventh to 12th grade. The club, which set a goal of $40,000 to raise, wants a new location to host elementary schoolage children, too.

Bids N’ BBQ is the club’s signature event to raise funds for the organization.

At this event, items are auctioned to fund the club, and youth leaders in the community are recognized.

Key speaker Georga Joyce spoke about Boys and Girls Club’s impact on the youth in the community. Joyce is a unit director at Boys and Girls Club Fremont County and works closely with the teenagers who attend the current Florence club location.

She spoke of children who expressed their respect and gratitude for having an empowering and safe location for them to enjoy at the Boys and Girls Club.

“Within the club, we try to show the kids trust, respect and a way to help the community. Watching these kids form into leaders and peer mentors is truly incredible,” Joyce said.

After dinner, items were auctioned online and in person. The Volunteer of the

At this event, items are auctioned to fund the Boys and Girls Club, and youth leaders in the community are recognized.

2019 Rotary Rubber Ducky Derby a success The books for this year’s Rotary Rubber Ducky Derby are balanced and the annual event was the most successful to date.

The Duck Race is a cooperative effort between the Rotary Club of Cañon City and the Florence and Eastern Fremont Rotary Club.

For the first time ever, all ducky tickets were sold and sponsorships were at the highest level to date, according to Cañon City Rotarian Jason Messer, Chair of the Rotary Rubber Ducky Derby Committee.
