William James "Bill" Hook April 19, 1931 ~ August 14, 2019
William James "Bill" Hook, 88 passed away on August 14, 2019 following a long battle with esophageal cancer. He was surrounded by family in his home. Bill was born April 19, 1931 in Colorado Springs, Colorado to Clifford and Emma (Hansen) Hook. He attended grade school in Midland, CO and then rode in the back of the unheated mail truck to Cripple Creek for high school. When Bill was old enough to drive, he was paid to transport other students to school. He married his high school sweetheart, Dixie June (Hovey) who survives him. Bill and his brothers worked on the Midland Railroad with their dad until 1950. In 1951 he joined the U.S. Navy with his brother Paul, serving as a Dental Technician. After receiving an honorable discharge, he settled in Canon City, driving to Colorado Springs to work at Universal Electric. In 1956, he began working at the Colorado Department of Corrections, retiring as Senior Captain in 1977. He was known as "Capt. Hook". When given an opportunity, he could capture an audience, sharing his many wide-ranging experiences. Bill also worked his family farm and did custom haying during the time he worked at the prison. In the early 1960's, Bill was also one of the original organizers of what is now the Park Center Water District. He later became superintendent. After finally retiring, he spent his winters in Port Aransas, Texas fishing in the Gulf and eating fine seafood. You would find him in his little 12 foot aluminum boat fishing alongside huge
oil tankers, or tied up at the old docks catching sheep head fish. Bill was a hard worker and loved adventure. During his life, he loved fishing, hunting, square dancing, bowling, traveling, and attending Sunday breakfast at the VFW with friends. He was a member of the Cattleman's Association and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows where he recently was honored with a 30 Year Jewel. He leaves behind his beloved children, Jim (Luanne) Hook of Bluff, Utah, Debbie (Dave) Dickens, Alan Hook, Monica (Ken) McGowan all of Canon City, CO; brothers, Bob and Ken Hook; grandchildren, Jennifer, Will, Lacey, Jill, Thomas, Sofie, Jason, Jamie, Jarad, Karri, Kelly, Aaron, Chelsea and Logan; 16 great grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Paul and Vernon. The family would like to thank the staff of Sangre de Christo Hospice, and the friends from the Royal Gorge Manor for their loving support and care. Special thanks to caregivers Adrienne and Eliza Cash. At his request, cremation has taken place. The family wishes to invite all friends for a gathering and light lunch to celebrate his life at the V.F.W. Hall located at 215 N. Geneva Fay (Lewis) Garoutte, age 81, passed away August 16, 2019 in Pueblo, Colorado. Geneva was born in Florence, CO to Wilbur and Verdie Lewis. Geneva is survived by her children, Linda (Don) Maqnino, Cheryl Garoutte, Gail (David) Ellis; grandchildren, Devin Magnino, Curtis Magnino, Renee Lee, Kyle Gardner, Riley (Anthony) Ellis-Beach, Sean Ellis; great-grandchildren, Colt Lamborn, Asher Beach, Shelby Lee; sisters, Wilma Munson, Lola Davies, Vera (Jim)

Pamela Marie Owens, age 64, of Dunbar PA, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 16, 2019, surrounded by loved ones. Born in Colorado, she was the daughter of the late Charles Willis and Beverly Ann (Ireland) Willcox; loving wife of 31 years to William H. Owens, Jr., mother of John (Wendy) Dennison and Steven (Tiffany) Dennison; step-mother of William H. Owens III and Alicia Owens; sister of Gerald (Lorri) Padgett and Patricia Hash; sister-in-law of Robert (Kim) Owens and Elisabeth P. Owens; daughter-in-law of the late William H. Sr., and Mary P. Owens; also survived by 14 wonderful
grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Pamela graduated from Florence High School in 1972 and went on to earn an Associate's degree in accounting. Family will be receiving friends on Wednesday from 11 AM until time of service at 2 PM in the Orion C. Shelli LeAnn Sanders November 4, 1978 ~ August 17, 2019
Shelli LeAnn Sanders, age 40, passed away August 17, 2019 in Parker, Colorado surrounded by her family. She was a lifelong Colorado resident. Shelli's life changed on June 11, 1996 when she was involved in a one car accident, which left her a quadriplegic. Shelli believed if one person came to Christ because of her accident it was worth it all. After many years of witnessing to people, God said "Well done my faithful servant" and took her home to be with Him where she is greeted by many family members. Shelli enjoyed taking walks with her dog Boomer, especially in downtown Denver. Shelli enjoyed living in downtown Denver where she made many friends while living in her own apartment. With the help of qualified people caring for her, she also spread the gospel. She would also spend time caring
for the homeless around her, by giving them drinking water and food or new clothes and socks. Since her accident in 1996 she spent her time telling people about our savior Jesus Christ and worked at saving souls. Shelli is survived by her parents, Thomas and Diane Sanders; sister, Amy (Matt) Brown; nephews, Brenden and Caeden Brown; many aunts, uncles, cousins, and of course her dog Boomer. She was preceded in death by her grandparents Jim and Margaret Sanders, and Steve and Patsy Brandt; and a cousin Brieonna Sanders Samora. Florence Arts Council to present Paint the Town event
Paint the Town, sponsored by the Florence Arts Council, is celebrating the event’s 15th year and will run from Oct. 14-19. The event includes painting in and around historic downtown Florence and selected sites in Fremont County, including the Royal Gorge Bridge and the Holy Cross Abbey on selected days. All work must be done on-site during the week. The event is open to 2D and 3D artists. It is a fun and artistic six days for the artists as there is, in addition to painting on-site through-out Florence, a
“Dinner on the Range,” a Painters/Patrons Reception, a Quick Draw event at a mystery location, culminating in an artist reception, dinner and sale on Saturday. The exhibition and sale runs Oct. 19 through Nov. 25. There is more than $3,500 in prize money donated by sponsors in additions to donor awards to artists. Best of show this year again will be $1000. Other prizes include first, second and third place, Spirit of the West awards (three) and Body of Works, in addition to other committed patron awards. The judge this year is
Dena Peterson, well-known regional artist and art instructor. The Florence Arts Council welcomes local and out-of-town artists. There are numerous local venues that work with the Council to facilitate a warm welcome to the artists needing housing. Paint the Town is also an opportunity for art patrons to participate in the event. There are opportunities to donate prize money for the artists and the possibility to purchase incredible art at the reception and sale. For more information about participat-

a benefit dinner Sept. 21 Mercy Over Bondage, an outreach ministry to struggling young adults in Fremont County, will host a benefit dinner at 6 p.m. Sept. 21 at the Abbey Events Center, located at 2951 E. U.S. 50. A silent auction will begin at 5:30 p.m. with the dinner and presentations starting at 6 p.m. There is no charge to attend. All proceeds will go to support the ministry, which was founded by Joetta Bender. Mercy Over Bondage, a ministry officially formed in September 2016, aims to help at-risk youth and young adults by bringing the Gospel to them where they are: on the streets, in the taverns and behind bars. The ministry helps the felons, prisoners, gang members, addicts and prostitutes living here in Fremont County. Bender’s journey with many of these individuals began more than 20 years
ago when she worked as a tracker, mentor and screener for youth and young adults at Gateway Youth and Family Services. The calling for her to minister to these adults led her to quit her full-time job so she could focus more on her ministry. Call for Nominations for School Directors Fremont RE-2 School District Fremont County, Colorado The Fremont RE-2 School District in the County of Fremont, State of Colorado, calls for nomination of candidates for school directors to be placed on the ballot for the regular biennial school election to be held on Tuesday, November 5, 2019. At this election three directors will be elected for a term of office of four years and one director will be elected for a term of office of two years. To be qualified, a candidate must have been a registered elector of the school district for at least 12 consecutive months before the election. A person is ineligible to run for school director if he or she has been convicted of committing a sexual offense against a child. A person who desires to be a candidate for school director shall file a written notice of intention to be a candidate and a nomination petition signed by at least 50 eligible electors who are registered to vote in the regular biennial school election. Nomination petitions may be obtained at Fremont RE-2 School Administration Office, 403 W. 5th Street, Florence, Colorado 81226. Office hours are 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday.
