William Carl "Bill" Korf June 28, 1949 - April 11, 2019
William Carl "Bill" Korf died peacefully at home on April 11, 2019 in Canon City, CO at the age of 69. Bill was born on June 28, 1949, in Garden City, KS to Jim and Virginia (Thomas) Korf. He graduated from Ingalls High School in Ingalls, KS in 1967. He married Mary Rector, his college sweetheart , in 1970, and over the next 14 years, they had five daughters. He graduated from Sterling College in Sterling, KS in 1971 with a Bachelor of Science degree. He taught school and coached various sports in Jennings, KS and Ensign, KS, before attending seminary at Calvary Bible College in Kansas City, MO. For the next 36 years, he worked for Village Missions, pastoring three churches: Philipsburg, MT, Oakley, KS, and Cotopaxi, CO. He retired to Canon City, CO in 2016. Bill lived his life with the goal of "preaching the Word and loving the people." He never met a stranger and was very involved in his communities. Sports were always an important part of his life, whether playing, watching, refereeing, coaching, or talking about and sharing his memories of them. His story-telling abilities
and outgoing spirit were loved by all. Bill is survived by his wife, Mary; his five daughters Carrie (Jeremy) Luce of Raytown, MO, Rebecca (Collin) Grant of Colorado Springs, CO, Melissa (Luke) Heim of Cherokee, OK, Paula (Christopher) Bertolino of Coaldale, CO, and Heather (Tony) VanHorn of Colorado Springs, CO; his eighteen grandchildren; his five brothers and sisters - Jim (Gail) of Colorado City, CO, Ina Smith of Penrose, CO, Cliff (Lavetta) of Firth, NE, Dinah (Rob) Eden of Caney, KS, and Nina (Vaughn) Nash of Dodge City, KS; and his foster brother, Ernie (Janice) Bigelow of Gordon, NE. He is preceded in death by his parents. Bill donated his body to Science Care. A memorial service is scheduled for May 4, 2019 at 2:00 pm, at the Cotopaxi High School Gymnasium, Cotopaxi, CO. Pastor Larry Weaver and Pastor Jim Karg will officiate the ceremony. All are welcome to attend. Earl Edward Nielson March 4, 1951 ~ March 29, 2019
Earl Edward Nielson, of Canon City passed away March 29, 2019. He was born in Cleveland, Ohio to Margaret and John Nielson on March 4, 1951. Earl attended schools in the Cleveland and the St. Louis area. He graduated from Southwest Missouri State University in 1973. After graduation he traveled throughout Europe and then worked in Kansas City, MO for a short while. He joined his brother in Colorado in 1976 where the Nielson Dragos Engineering was established from 1976 to 1986 in Buena Vista. When the business closed Earl went to work in the health care field at Heart of the Rockies Regional Medical Center in Salida for five years. From there he moved to Canon City and joined Centura Health Systems for 20 years retiring as Director of Imaging Technology. He was a leader in his field and passionate about delivering health care to rural areas through technology and innovation. While in Buena Vista he met and married Jill who survives him. During the Buena Vista years the Engineering Company sponsored an annual golf tournament
in various mountain locales. These were raucous occasions and the subject of many conversations over the years. Earl belonged to the Rotary Club and many other professional organizations. Earl and his wife travelled extensively throughout the US and Canada. He was a sports enthusiast and particularly enjoyed gold and baseball. His greatest asset was his humor. Other adjectives used to describe him are warm, compassionate, honest and romantic. He loved his dogs and named all the squirrels in his back yard. He was an avid music lover. He is survived by his wife Jill; son, Jeff; brother, Chris (Heather); sister, Barb (Dave) sister-in-law, Jeanie; sister-in-law Karen (Joe); six "favorite" nieces and specials persons, Jessi (Michael) and Toby. Donations may be made in Earl's honor to the Fremont County Humane Society. At Earl's request no services will be held. Cremation has been entrusted to Holt Funeral Home. April 3,1972 - April 6, 2019 Rick was a caring, loveable, gentle, and giving person, that brought joy to everyone that knew him. His first love was his wife, and he showed her each and every day how much she meant to him. He also loved riding motorcycles, building classic cars, and listening to music (especially Ozzy). He belong to several clubs were he enjoyed participating in fundraiser for those in need. Rick was a hard worker and was eager to learn new things. He
had an excellent sense of humor and always made everyone laugh. Rick made a lasting impression on everyone who knew him, and he will never be forgotten. He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Cheryl; a father, John Jaquez; two very close friends, Sharon and Russ Bebford; and numerous other friends. Diane Meese of Canon City passed away April 8, 2019. She was born in Wayne, Nebraska on February 23, 1944 to Edgar and Mildred (Simons) Meese. She Graduated from Canon City High School in 1962. She received a BA in Business from Colorado State University, Ft. Collins. She was employed by TWA airlines for 30 years where she began as a stewardess and climbed the ladder to a PR Executive for the company. She was a world traveler, an avid Rockies fan and loved her time spent at the family cabin in Twin Lakes Colorado. Diane is survived by her brother, Dennis Meese; niece, Carrie
(Brad) Hanenberg; great-nephews, Zac Hanenberg and Blake Hanenberg; along with numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Edgar and Mildred Meese; brother, Morris Meese and her sister-in-law, Carol Meese. Roberta Swisher June 30, 1956 ~ April 8, 2019
Roberta Swisher, 62, of Cañon City passed away April 8, 2019. The daughter of Robert E. and Maxine (Grandfield) Hamilton was born in Cañon City, Colorado on June 30, 1956. First and foremost she loved her family. She took pride in providing daycare to family and friends. Her greatest joy was spending time with her husband Lester, her daughter Katee (James) and grandchildren Tristyn, Julia, Jeremiah and Briella. Roberta enjoyed raising her daughter and contributed to the care of many other children. Once those kids reached school, Roberta began work as a para-professional at Harrison School. She retired from that position upon her diagnosis of ovarian cancer in 2008. During this period, she discovered the Orchard of Hope Organization and was blessed to become a cancer warrior. The true gift she received was to form a team, "Berta's Blessings" and be able to give back to others. This endeavor was supported by family and friends who shared the belief that it is important to pay it forward. Roberta is survived by
her husband, Lester; daughter Katee (James); grandchildren; siblings, Dennis (Roxye), Larry (Lynnette), Joan (Steve), John (Cindy), and many extended family members. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister Susan. The family wishes to extend their thanks to Pam Swisher for her selfless love and devotion during this time as well as countless friends and family for providing comfort and encouragement. Fremont County to host vaccine clinic once a month in Florence Fremont County Department of Public Health and Environment will host a vaccine clinic once a month in Florence to help make immunizations more accessible to local residents. The Fremont County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday approved a lease agreement with the City of Florence for space at the Florence Municipal Center, located at 600 W. Third St., to allow for the clinic. It will be available the last Friday of each month, beginning April 26, by appointment only. Walkins will not be accepted. “The initial plan is to start with one Friday a month and see how it grows from there,” said Emma Davis, the FCDPHE director. “This will be similar to a travel clinic.” The clinic is an effort to address low immunization rates in Florence, Davis said. Fremont County’s vaccination rate for individuals zero to 22 is 66 percent, which is mid-range compared to other counties, Davis said, but that rate should be at 95 percent to prevent any type of outbreak. Most recently, the department was notified March 31 of a third positive hepatitis A (Hep-A) case in Fremont County. “That is something that

is preventable through a vaccine,” Davis said. Colorado ranks last in the U.S. for kindergarten immunization rates, Davis said, because parents are opting to fill out exemption cards for their children, citing personal, medical or religious reasons. According to the FCDPHE, vaccinations save the lives of about 33,000 people each year in the U.S., and in 2017 in Colorado, 9,424 children were taken to the hospital because they were ill from a disease that could have been prevented by vaccination. The Florence clinic will be open to all Fremont County residents. Davis said having Fridays available should be helpful to families whose children don’t have school on those days or adults who have Fridays off and can’t get to the Cañon City office earlier in the week. All other regular services will continue to be offered at the main office, which located at the Garden Park Building, 201 N. As the signs of spring appear, weather warms and the ground is ready for digging, eager do-it-yourself residents and contractors are jumping into projects. A recent national survey by the Common Ground Alliance (CGA) revealed that 42 percent of homeowners who plan to dig this year for projects like landscaping, installing a fence or mailbox, building a deck, pond or patio and other DIY projects, will put themselves and their communities at risk by not calling 811 a few days beforehand to learn the approximate location of underground utilities. CGA is a national advocacy organization focused on preventing damage to underground
infrastructure. Contacting 811 notifies the appropriate utility companies of the intent to dig. Utility representatives are then sent free of charge to the requested digging sites to mark the approximate locations of underground lines with flags or spray paint. The approximate location of underground utility lines will be marked with color-coded spray paint, flags or stakes that correspond to the utility. The color used for natural gas is yellow. -- Respect the Marks: Only use hand digging tools to carefully uncover the area around a utility when you need to dig close to the marks. Use extreme care around natural gas facilities. Just a nick on

The purpose of the Cañon City Area Recreation District Youth Volleyball program is to emphasize skill development, fair play, sportsmanship, and fun. Each participant will play in each game, learning basic volleyball fundamentals and rules.
