Robert Larry Davison July 22, 1931 ~ February 19, 2019

Robert Larry Davison, age 87, passed away on February 19, 2019. Larry was born in Imperial, Nebraska on July 22, 1931, to Clay and Helen Davison. He was brought up learning how to hunt, fish and work. At the age of 17 Larry enlisted in the Army. His last post was Ft. Carson, Co, where he retired as a Captain. He was preceded in death by his mother, father, brother, Arlyn, and son, Ronald Larry Davison. Larry is survived by his wife, Peg Davison. Children by his first wife, Lily Price, Bob Davison of Parlin, CO, Connie Davison of Richmond, VA, JoDee Davison of FL, Cathy Dewsbury of Richmond,

VA. His grandchildren: Lyndsey Winters (Jonny), grandaughter Sofie, Stephanie Davison (Steve Botham, grandaughter, Kayleigh) both of Plante City, FL Kristin Davison and David Davison (Beth), both of Colorado Springs, CO. Also, many nieces and nephews. Larry loved to hunt, fish, build things and party with family and friends. He was a huge guy in stature and personality. He will be missed. A "Celebration of Life" will be held Aug 3, 2019 at Larry's home. Friends and family are invited. More specific times will be disclosed closer to August.

Opal Lorena (Tabler) Retzer June 12,1915 ~ March 7, 2019

Opal Lorena (Tabler) Retzer, passed away March 7, 2019 at the age of 103. She was born June 12, 1915 to Moses L. Tabler and CoraBelle (Wolfkill) Tabler in Pottawatomie County, Kansas. Opal graduated from Wamego High School in 1934. From 1934 to 1938, she taught in one room schools. Opal married Eldon E. Retzer on Dec. 27, 1938. They lived in Kansas, Minnesota, Brazil, Mexico, and Illinois. She enjoyed raising their two sons. She retired in 1980 to Colorado, then in 1998 she moved with Eldon to Kidron Bethel Retirement Home in N. Newton, Kansas. They loved living back in Kansas. Opal is survived by her two sons, Keith (Viva Kellogg) Retzer of Pittsburg, Kansas, Kent (Jeanne Smidl) Retzer of Rockford, Illinois; grandson, Kevin Retzer and fiancee' Louse Bauer of Yorkville, Illinois; three granddaughters, Joy (Retzer) Stahl of Elkhard, Kansas, Faith Retzer of Pittsburg, Kansas, Heather (Retzer) Owen and husband Mark of Island

Cañon City School District approves new calendar By Chris Graham The Daily Record

No doubt, we’re competing with every district around us getting more applications, people more interested in going there because of that four-day school week.” The district will monitor different aspects that are affected by the change in the calendar, such as juvenile crime rates, teacher and student attendance, teacher applications and academic achievement, along with making sure professional development time is being used properly. This will be done to see the impact in the district by the change in the calendar. Public comment at the Feb. 25 school board meeting saw some concerns regarding special education needs on “e-learning” days, which happen on days that school is canceled, because of weather, resulting in students using Chromebooks to complete assignments. The district would use their compensatory services program to meet those needs or a possibility could be to pay special education staff to come in on a noschool Friday to help those students. The compensatory services program is a summer program used to help special education students who miss extended amounts of school because of health reasons. Another concern at the public comment meeting that was addressed was the concern of supervision on the Fridays there is no school. Superintendent George Welsh touched on meetings with local agencies to help with that issue, such as Boys and Girls Club of Fremont County, the Cañon City Area Recreation and Park District and the Fremont Adventure Recreation. “I feel we have made good headway with (those) organizations,” Welsh said.

All American Freedom Festival of Colorado to present annual Scholarship Award All American Freedom Festival of Colorado will hold their annual scholarship awards ceremony at 6 p.m. April 26 at the Mountain View Core Knowledge School gymnasium. Fremont County high school seniors from RE-1, RE2, RE-3, GOAL Academy and home schools will have submitted their essays or videos answering the question, “Why Are Liberty and Freedom Critical to the Future of the United States of America,” in hopes of winning AAFFCO’s scholarship award of $3,000 or more for 2019. The winning video or essay will be highlighted at the April 26 event by the winning student. In addition to the scholarship award, 5th through 8th graders at Mountain View Core Knowledge School will be competing in a “Bill of Rights” poster competition for prizes, and the younger students will be presenting a patriotic tribute. This event is the culmination of AAFFCO’s 2019 “Scholarships for Leaders” program where Fremont County graduating high school seniors from public, private, online and home schools can win a scholarship award paid to their chosen institute of higher learning universities, academies, colleges, seminaries, institutes of technology, vocational schools, trade schools and any other career college that awards academic degrees or professional certifications. Fremont County women recognized, celebrated during third annual event By India Beach The Daily Record The Fremont Exceptional Women board honored 15 women Friday during its annual banquet at the E-Free Church. The third annual event, which fittingly landed this year on International Women’s Day, aims to recognize, honor and empower women in Fremont County. The evening was spent celebrating the women in Fremont County and recognizing each woman’s impact on the community. Five women from the 15 nominees were selected as winners from the organized five groups of three. Each group was centered around a uniting theme and an exceptional woman who displayed that characteristic. The year’s winners included Rosalyn Walker, Norma Hatfield Award for Professional Achievement; Sandi Allen, Minnie Harding Award for Overcoming Adversity; Beth Katchmar, Cara Fisher Award for Community Service; Linda Carlson, Ruth Carter Award for Excellence in Character, and Sasha Dierdorff, Janet Gunkel Award for Rising Star. The first group honored Norma Hatfield, a woman who held the position of County Clerk for the longest amount of time in Colorado history. The group of honorees in this group have displayed outstanding professional achievement. Nominees in this group included Diana Armstrong, Marcy Epperson and Walker. “This is a true blessing in my life,” Walker said after winning her award. “May we all have an inspired evening.” The next group was guided by the ability to overcome adversity. The woman this award was based off was Minnie Harding, who started a kindergarten for Fremont County out of a tent while dealing with the loss of her husband. The woman nominated for this award were Allen, Kinsey Larsen and Linda Mulder. “Every nominee has a passion and they all listen to that small voice in their heart”, Allen said. The third group was dedicated to Cara Fisher, who volunteered for several organizations to help Fremont County. The women nominated for her category displayed incredible community service. “I’m humbled to be in the company of so many wonderful people”, said Beth Katchmar. The three young women nominated for the rising star award were Dierdorff, Alyssa McGlamery and Emily Reynolds. The rising star award was based on Janet Gunkel, a woman who dedicated her life to teaching the young students of Fremont County. “To all the women up on this stage, thank you for all you do for the place we get to call home”, said Sasha Dierdorff. The final group was for the Ruth Carter Excellence in Character. Ruth Carter was an outstanding woman who became the first female Chief Probation Officer to be appointed in Colorado. The nominees for this category were Carie Canterbury,

Carlson and Vicki Meier. “I’m so passionate about it (speaking about her teaching work in Africa) I can hardly see straight,” Carlson said. Each of the 15 women nominated was awarded a necklace provided by Nelson’s Fine Jewelry and a yellow rose gifted by the Zonta Club. Before awards were announced, the Cañon City High School Tiger Ladies and Women of Encore performed a choir piece together. The 60 girls on stage sang “Fearless” with an additional twist. Many girls stood up and quoted powerful women during their performance, such as Amelia Earhart, Rosa Parks, and many others. This year, F.E.W. partnered with Kindred Kids Child Advo-
