Once the focal point of meetings with governors, financial managers, politicians and business leaders, the Peabody Mansion continues to be a hub of activity in downtown Cañon City. Built in the 1880s for James Clelland, the Victorian house set on a quiet, residential, tree-lined lane known as River Street, now Royal Gorge Boulevard. In 1875, James H. Peabody moved to Cañon City and married Clelland’s daughter. They were given the Peabody Mansion as a wedding present. Biggerstaff later sold it to Cañon City as part of a downtown revitalization and urban renewal effort, known as the River Station Project. The Cañon City Chamber of Commerce took over its operation and purchased the building from Cañon City. As part of its use, the chamber has become a focal point for tourists coming into town, as well as businesses joining the organization. Naomie "Nonie" Jene (Erps) Merrill, 41, passed Nov. 1, 2018 in Canon City. Naomie was born in Canon City on April 16, 1977 to Eugene and Sandra (Steffens) Erps. She graduated from Canon City High School having made life-long impressions on everyone she met with her creative spirit. She was even recognized as Ms. Personality in the Blossom Festival. Throughout her life, she continued to charm and inspire with her stunning smile and passionate spirit. Naomie's greatest accomplishment has been her children. She found meaning in helping many people as a recovery sponsor. Through these efforts she came to value the Serenity Prayer, "God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can and wisdom to know the difference." She loved her Starbucks, spending time listening to music, painting, crafting, arranging flowers, traveling and expanding her collections of rock and roll t-shirts. Naomie is survived by
her husband, Nathan Merrill; her parents, Eugene and Sandy Erps; children Kieren Skelly and Virginia Coover; stepchildren, Corrie, Christian and Caydance Merrill; sister, Melissa (Eddie) Newby; nephew, Ayden Erps; and niece, Audrey Newby as well as many other loving family and friends. She lived her life authentically and with unending passion. Naomie recently shared this quote with her family, "Don't change so people will like you, be yourself and the right people will love you." Harold Dale Gregory Jr. July 26, 1933 ~ November 4, 2018
Harold Dale Gregory Jr., age 85, died on Sunday, November 4, 2018 at the Bruce McCandless State Veterans Community Living Center in Florence. He was born on July 26, 1933 in Hominy, Oklahoma to Harold and Mary (Elliot) Gregory. On September 11, 1971, he married Anita Williams, his wife of 47 years. Harold served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War as a drafting clerk. He left the Air Force in 1956 as an Airman First Class. He later worked 26 years with the Civil Service in various postings in New Mexico and Colorado. He retired in 1989 as the budget officer for Evans Army Community Hospital. Harold enjoyed hunting, fishing and wood carving. He was locally known for the irises he grew in the front yard and the Northwest Pacific Coast styled totem poles he carved that once stood in yard.
He is survived by his wife, Anita; children, Michael (Audrey) Gregory, Theresa (Emmett) Howell, William (Jennifer) Gregory, Steven Gregory; one brother; a sister; and three grandchildren. George Edgar Carson Jr. was born December 14, 1933 in Denver, Colorado to George Edgar Carson Sr. and Gladys (Halverson) Carson. George graduated from South High School and attended classes at the Emily Griffith Opportunity School. George enjoyed the Denver area especially fishing in the mountain streams. George was a lawn mower technician for Carson Bros., the family business. After the business closed George worked for Steel Inc. until a car accident in 1974 brought him to Canon City to be under the care of Canon's nursing homes facilities which eventually enabled him to ride a bike and/or walk collecting and recycling cans. Then a pedestrian/truck encounter required George to depend on a walker to take
advantage of all Canon City has to offer and the kindness of its residents especially the First United Methodist Church that he attended regularly. George is survived by his sister, Edith (Carson) Cook and brother-in-law, Charles "Bud" Cook; nephews, Tom Cook, Dane(Patti)Cook; nieces, Cheryl (Conrad) Lindberg, Linda (Jim) Hitt; three grandnieces and one grandnephew. Rex C. Love, Jr., (age 82) passed away November 1, 2018 at home after a long battle with cancer. Rex was born on October 23, 1936 in Pueblo, Colorado to Rex Sr. and Magdalene (Anna) Love. His family who lived in Lime, Colorado at the time relocated to Canon City shortly after he was born. Rex spent most of his life in and around Canon City where he attended St. Michael School and graduated from the Abbey. He then went on to attend Regis University where he received a Bachelor of Arts in Accounting and a Masters in Business Administration, Finance and Accounting. Rex was a proud veteran of the United States Army. On June 25, 1966 he married Jo Ellen Goodale at St. Michael Catholic Church in Canon City. Rex worked as an assistant administrator and controller at St. Thomas More Hospital and Progressive Care Center for 20 years before he began operating his own accounting business for many years. An avid hunter and fisherman, Rex enjoyed the Colorado mountains
and the many wonderful streams. Rex is survived by his wife, Jo Ellen; daughter, Regina (Jeff) Perkins; grandsons, Matthew Perkins and Luke Perkins; sisters, Barbara Love(David) Wells, Mary Jane Dickinson; brother, Tim (Pasty) Love; along with many wonderful nieces, nephews and cousins. Wallace Vangen, age 67, passed away October 26, 2018 in Denver, Colorado. Wallace served as a sergeant in the 82nd field artillery U.S. Army for 18 years. Wallace was born November 22, 1950 in Stanley, North Dakota to Willard and Dorothy Vangen. He was able to marry Cynthia Mayer on January 5, 1985 in North Dakota. Wallace enjoyed fishing although he was not able to do it recently. He loved firearms and shooting, even becoming a gunsmith. He also enjoyed riding motorcycles but he lived to be with his grandchildren.
He is survived by his two daughters, Chelsea Embrey, Jessica Straight; four grandchildren; sister, Wanda (Sonny) Holt; along with many nieces and nephews. In Colorado, more than 410,000 people have diabetes and 1.5 million have prediabetes. It’s an effort to revive the golden age of radio. The Rialto Players will present six productions of “Vintage Hitchcock, a Live Radio Play,” by Joe Landry, at the historic Rialto Theater, located at 209 W. Main St. in Florence. Directed by Janet Romanos, the production includes spies, murder, love and other trademarks of Alfred Hitchcock come to life in the style of a 1940’s radio broadcast of the

master of suspense’s earlier films: “The Lodger,” “Sabotage” and “The 39 Steps”. “Vintage Hitchcock, a Live Radio Play is not your typical stage play,” states a press release from the Rialto Players. “It is a Readers Theater performance, a dramatic presentation of a written work in script form.” The readers in this production are the employees of the 1940’s WBRF Radio station, where the stage is set. “The experience intends to recreate an old-time radio broadcast,” the release states. “The audience will
experience the stories through the magic of sound: the actors’ voices, music and the foley, who creates the sound effects live on stage.” Performances are at 7 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Nov. 16 and 17, and at 3 p.m. Sunday and Nov. 18. Fremont County voters elect Allen Cooper as new sheriff By Carie Canterbury The Daily Record
A new era is soon to begin at the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office, and Allen Cooper will be leading the charge. The 65-year-old Republican candidate was elected as Fremont County’s new sheriff Tuesday, beating out independent candidates Boyd Canterbury, 66, and Skip Moreau, 68, in the General Election. Cooper garnered 61.25 percent of the votes, compared to 23.95 percent for Canterbury and 14.81 percent for Moreau. “I just want to thank everybody for having the confidence in me to elect me to this position,” Cooper said. “I really want to do the best job that I can for the people of Fremont County, and I am ready to start working.” Cooper will replace Jim Beicker, who was elected four times and held the office longer than any other sheriff since Fremont County’s first one was appointed in 1861. Cooper said he wishes to thank the voters who cared enough to get out and back their candidates. “That meant a lot to us,” he said. “We were well
received at every function we attended. I personally was glad that people approached me and asked questions and allowed me to give them a response to those questions.” Cooper said he also was pleased with the voter turnout in Fremont County. “I think that credit can be given to all the candidates because we were all actively pushing to get the votes out regardless of whether people voted for us or not,” he said. “We felt this race was important enough that we needed everybody’s vote to make sure that everybody got a chance to voice their opinion.” Of the 19,860 ballots cast in Fremont County, the race for sheriff garnered 18,713 votes. Canterbury said it’s hard to run against a Republican candidate in Fremont County, however, he was pleased to have been part of a “good, clean race.” “Allen is a good man,” he said. “Hopefully, he’ll do well and go forward for the betterment of the sheriff’s department.” This was Canterbury’s second run for sheriff, but he said it will be his last. “I knew we had a hard road ahead going into this,”
he said. Cooper’s first order of business as sheriff will be to put together a transition team made up of subject matter experts to audit the entire sheriff’s office that will provide him with feedback on areas that are working well and areas that need work. He said this is something that typically is done when there is a significant change of command. “Then I want to take those individual reports and put those together in a document and then present it to the county commissioners as a state of the office,” he said. “My hope is to accomplish that before I am sworn in, if possible.” He also plans to meet with the commissioners in the next couple of weeks before formally announcing his selection for undersheriff. Cooper, who has lived in Cañon City since he was 16, is married to Sandy McCoy-Cooper and has three sons and five grandchildren. He started his law enforcement career in the 1970s with the FCSO and eventually became a volunteer reserve officer with the Cañon City Police Department. He started working

In the rest of his time with the department, Cooper has worked as a range officer, patrol sergeant, SWAT team entry, sniper and a team leader. Additionally, he has worked as a detective sergeant, commander of support services, commander of operations
and commander of the Fremont County Combined Investigative Response team. When former CCPD Chief Paul Schultz left the department last year, Cooper served as the interim leader until Cañon City hired current Chief Daric Harvey. Cooper said he decided not to apply for that position.
Cooper told the Daily Record early in his campaign that if elected, one of his first goal’s for the department would be to plan a patrol schedule based on the number and types of calls for service received. Cooper said he also would focus on homelessness and mental health issues, as well as changing the way deputies are hired.
Tourism group ‘baffled’ by failure of lodging tax By Carie Canterbury The Daily Record For the second consecutive year, voters said no to boosting the lodging tax rate from two to five percent for those staying in short-term lodging facilities, such as motels, hotels and campgrounds. Fifty-two percent of voters turned down the issue Tuesday, the same percentage as those who said no in 2017. Dennis Wied, a member of 2A’s Tourism Group to Increase Funding and former longtime Cañon City Council member, said he was disappointed by the voter response, but he said there are two possible explanations as to why voters turned down a tax that they won’t even have to pay.
“Either it just wasn’t understood what a lodging tax is and who pays it, or maybe people are more informed than I think and they simply don’t want tourism here,” he said. “Maybe they aren’t interested in growing the area, they live here and they don’t want things to change, they don’t want more people to come visit, they are happy paying taxes and they are happy with the way the economy is here, and the potential for additional revenue from outside sources isn’t attractive.” Ballot Issue 2A’s tax hike was projected to generate $300,000 in revenue for marketing and promotions in its first year, with the city, setting aside matching funds. With additional county taxes, it was esti-
mated that the marketing operating budget, which would have been managed by the Royal Gorge Regional Tourism Council, would hover at about $700,000. By comparison, total lodging tax collections for Fremont County in 2017 were around just $220,000. Wied said the FCTC will continue to exist and continue to manage the funds raised by the current lodging tax, and the RGRTC will continue to exist unless it is disbanded by the city council. Mayor Preston Troutman said the city council will decide what the next steps are before the 2019 budget is approved. He said he also was surprised that the question failed.
“I don’t think we ever thought it wouldn’t pass,” he said. “It’s a tax that doesn’t cost (local residents) anything. And everywhere you go, you end up paying a facility fee or tourism fee when you spend the night — we are getting our butt kicked by Salida and Buena Vista, but they are spending close to a million dollars a year because of their taxes.” Wied said he seriously doubts if another such effort will move forward again. “Me personally, I’ll keep doing what I do and I know that those of us in the tourism industry will continue to promote the area,” he said. Wied said he would like to know the reasons why people voted against it.
