Stephen Charles Johnston "GRIZZ" November 19, 1954 ~ February 3, 2019
Stephen Charles Johnston, "GRIZZ", age 64, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 3, 2019, surrounded by family and friends, after a courageous battle with cancer. Steve was born in La Mesa, California, but lived most of his life in Fremont County, Colorado. He retired from the Department of Corrections in 2014, then spent his retirement years enjoying the outdoors and coin collecting. Some of his greatest enjoyment during those years were his time spent camping, hunting and fishing with Donda, brothers and his friends. Steve was known for his sense of humor, humility and honesty. He also collected and bought baseball gloves for little league teams, raising 4-H lambs, and tending
to the land and animals on his farm. He was preceded in death by grandparents, Noma and Charles Johnston, parents, Edna and Norman Johnston and wife, Rhonda Miller Johnston. Steve is survived by wife, Donda Caughman Johnston, daughter, Monica Ragsdale of Florence, and brothers, Roger and Dave Johnston of Colorado Springs, CO. The family would like to thank nurses, Kim and Brittany of Sangre De Cristo Hospice, and dear friend, Shawnett Weltz for the care and support during Steve's final journey. A celebration of life will be held at 2:00 pm at the Elk's lodge, 131 East Front St. Florence, CO. Arrangements are under the direction of Return to Nature Funeral Service.

July 28, 1988 ~ February 24, 2019 Lukas Cox was born on July 28, 1988 to Carmen and Jon-Eric Cox in Gelnhausen, Germany. Lukas passed away on February 24, 2019 at the University Of Colorado Hospital due to Bacterial Endocarditis. Lukas is left behind by his mother and father, Carmen and Jon-Eric Cox and the dogs he rescued named Shiloh and Abigail. Lukas was a great son; he had a big heart and only cared about making people happy. He no longer has to suffer, and is now with the good Lord in Heaven.

Adolph Ben Zamarripa February 13, 1929 - January 5, 2019
Adolph Ben Zamarripa, age 89, passed away on January 5, 2019. Adolph was born in Chandler, CO on February 13, 1929 to Leo and Helen (Carillo) Zamarripa. He was preceded in death by his mother, father and five brothers:Ernest, Alfred, Leo Jr, Arthur and Edward. He is survived by his sisters, Marge Herrera of Florence and Helen Vigil of Denver and by brothers: John, Ben, Tom (Phyllis) of Pueblo and Robert (Lucille) of Colorado Springs and
also many nieces and nephews. Adolph was a veteran of the Army serving in the Korean war with the 3rd Infantry Division. After service, Adolph became a barber and then became a steel worker in Colorado Springs. Funeral services will be held March 1, 2019 at St Joseph Catholic Church 1830 So. Corona Street at 10 AM. Mixed reaction from parents, teachers about district’s proposed schedule change By Chris Graham The Daily Record The Cañon City School District heard mixed reactions Monday night from teachers, parents and community members about a proposed change to the school year schedule. The schedule shortens the school year by six days, extends the school day by 10 to 15 minutes, and on alternating Fridays, there will be either no school or an early release. The school district has said the reason behind the change is to retain and attract high-quality teachers. “The best thing we can do for kids is to put an outstanding educator in front of them,” Superintendent George Welsh said at Monday’s meeting. Welsh said while that there is no data to confirm that schools that switch to a four-day week get more applicants, he has heard from current teachers who were considering leaving the district for a new job but would commit to staying if the new schedule is approved. “Teacher quality is far and away the most important factor in the outcome of our students,” said Shannon Daly, who is a husband of a teacher in the district. The district also touts a positive to the change would be to add more professional development time for teachers. More teacher work time allows teachers to work on lesson plans and grade homework without sacrificing their weekend. More professional development allows teachers to talk with other teachers about the best ways to teach children, educators in the district said Monday. “This calendar allows people like me to learn how to be an educator while I’m also trying to be the best educator I can be for these kids,” said
Ellen Holcomb, who is an alternatively licensed teacher in the district. Only adding 15 minutes to the school day is another plus for those in favor of the change. Usually, when schools switch to a four-day school week, the day is extended by an hour. That hour can fatigue younger students and only adding 15 minutes doesn’t create as much fatigue. Early release, as opposed to a late start, means children would only miss two meals a month on the Fridays where there isn’t school. But not all are in favor of the new schedule and argued the lack of structure that the calendar would create for the parents and students. Many community members brought up their concerns with the structure and consistency of the calendar. Trying to remember if there is school on Friday or an early release can be confusing to both parents and children. “To give any of these students a calendar like the one proposed is kind of confusing and number one does not give them consistency they need to do their best learning,” said parent Michelle Cook. Also, parents and community members cited structure and consistency helps students. Speakers told the school board that they would rather the district pick one or the other, a four-day or five-day school week, to give more consistency to the schedule. “Research shows that consistency helps children feel safe, secure and comfortable,” Cook said. Some parents feel that consistency applies most to special needs students who rely on strict schedules the most. They said e-learning days, which occur in the event of inclement weather closing the schools, also would be difficult for special needs students
who require aids and assistance when learning. “E-learning days, for my kids, they need special education supports to be able to do e-learning,” said Tina Rowe, who is the parent of special needs students. Another concern for parents is how to watch or take care of kids on the Fridays that there are no school and early releases. Parents mentioned they would have to take time off work to either pick up their child or find a program to take care of their child on those days. Welsh mentioned before public comment that programs would be offered by the recreation district and Boys and Girls Club. An issue with that is cost and transportation. While the district would not be a four-day week calendar, parents are concerned about the lack of supervision on the Fridays the district doesn’t have school. Also at Monday’s school board meeting the start and stop times were also released that would coincide with the proposed schedule. Those times are: Cañon City High School: 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Cañon City Middle School: 7:55 a.m. to 3:25 p.m. Cañon Exploratory School K-6th: 8 a.m. to 3:05 p.m. Cañon Exploratory School 7-8th: 7:45 a.m. to 2:55 p.m. Harrison K-5th: 8:10 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. Harrison 6-8th: 7:45 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. Lincoln: 8:15 a.m. to 3:20 p.m. McKinley: 8:40 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. Washington: 8:10 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. The district plans to vote on the proposed schedule during the March 11 meeting.

Volunteers help rescue bald eagle near Eleven Mile State Park

Volunteers came together in frigid conditions to rescue a bald eagle that appeared injured Feb. 18 near Eleven Mile State Park in Park County. The bird fittingly was named “George Washington” since he was rescued on Presidents’ Day. Cory Dunkin was out walking his dog Feb. 17 when the eagle jumped out in front of him. Dunkin noticed the eagle had appeared to be injured and went to tell his neighbor, Denise Kelly, who is a wildlife and eagle photographer. Kelly hiked out to find the eagle, also taking note that he was unable to fly. Brian and Angie Davis of the Catamount Wildlife Center in Woodland Park met her at the campground and tried to catch the eagle in a blanket, but he hopped down a hill and dropped into a partially-blocked culvert. “It was getting late, and we didn’t have any flashlights,” Kelly said. “(Angie Davis) stuck a stick down by its feet, and it wasn’t latching onto it.” They put blankets on both sides of the culvert so the eagle wouldn’t freeze during the night and made plans to meet the next day. On the morning of Feb. 18, Kelly met Colorado Parks and Wildlife volunteer Joe Kraudelt and Brian Davis at the campground. Kraudelt brought a sled, a fishing net and a large plastic dog kennel, Kelly said. Kelly took a photo of the eagle, who was about seven feet back in the culvert. “He looked so much better,” she said. “He was up on his feet, and he didn’t look near as scared as he did the night before.” Davis crawled through the backside of the culvert to nudge the eagle out, but he didn’t move, Kelly said, so she went in the culvert with the net in front of her. “It was trapped under the road in a culvert that was 24-inches in diameter and 20 feet long,” Kraudelt said in a press release issued by CPW. Kelly was face to face with the eagle, just four feet from him. “I thought what if he attacks me, what would I do?” she said. “I reached out and pulled him toward me.” She pushed the eagle up toward the

Collins said once the eagle can fly, he will be returned to Eleven Mile Canyon. “The goal is to get him back out there as soon as he is healthy enough to be released,” she said. He is expected to make a full recovery. “I thought it was kind of ironic, that here I’ve watched (eagles) and taken pictures of them for years, then to have the opportunity to get to help one was just amazing,” Kelly said. “All that matters is that we all came together and helped — he is just an amazing bird.”

Cañon City resolved to build off Small Business Revolution effort

It wasn’t the news that everyone wanted to hear when Deluxe Corp. announced Tuesday that Searcy, Ark., won the Small Business Revolution contest. Cañon City was in the running to be featured on season four of the makeover show and receive a half-million dollar investment in six small businesses. “Overall, we accomplished what we wanted to accomplish, which was pull the community together and get some momentum going,” said Ryan Stevens, the economic development director for the City of Cañon City. “There is a lot going on in this community — there was a lot going on before the Small Business Revolution started, and we still have a lot going on. We need to keep developing the projects that we have and keep them moving forward.” The news was a disappointment to the hundreds of community members who watched the announcement together in the Tiger Dome at Cañon City High School, but Mayor Preston Troutman still wore a smile when he greeted people as they filed out. “I think we’ve seen the light — we’ve seen forward, we’ve seen the future,” he said. “This has been such a dramatic change for our town and for everybody, not just the businesses.” He said the SBR effort brought people out who hadn’t been involved in the community before. “We want their ideas, and I’m available,” he said. “I’ll talk to any group, anywhere. I want to hear from them.” Cathy Finney, the owner of Vintage Revival, said she plans to keep her signature orange tilde in front of her business. “The things that we’ve learned from this, the things that we’ve learned from each other, the community that we’ve become, we are winners,” she said. Moving forward, she said community members need to continue to believe in one another, continue to lift one another up and help take Cañon City to its next level and find out what it’s made of. “The momentum already started, we have nothing to hang our heads about,” said Debbie Lake, the owner and operator of Classic Furniture and the chair of the Downtown Business Alliance. “We’re still Cañon City and we’re still awesome.” Dan Brown, the president of the Fremont Community Foundation and owner of The Cellhouse, said the last four months have been wearing, but it’s work that must be done anyway if the community wants to flourish — with or without Small Business Revolution. “This was our short-term future, our long-term future is up to us — all of us,” he said. “I think there are a lot of people that are ready to move forward and keep going.” When Searcy, Ark., was announced, the crowd’s disappointment quickly turned to a round of applause and standing ovation for Stevens, who applied for the contest and spearheaded the initiative.

We need to be able to capitalize on the exposure that we just created.” He said one thing that needs to happen is Cañon City needs to take back its brand. “We’re known as a prison community, and we need to reframe that conversation,” he said. “We need to be known as a community of first responders. We’re not the place where El Chapo goes, we’re the place that keeps the state and the country safe from these horrible people, and we need to be proud of that.” Stevens heard about the Small Business Revolution when he lived and worked in La Junta, and he applied for it all four years of its existence based on the community he was in. He submitted a nomination on behalf of Cañon City, for the third season, and it was picked up by SBR for consideration for its fourth season. Out of 12,000 nominations, Cañon City made it to the top six finalists. During the seven-day voting period, Cañon City was in second place the first few days but fell to third about halfway through. “Those last two days we bumped more people through our website than we put through those first four days combined,” Stevens said. “It’s because of all of you — you guys come out and you rocked that vote, you were out there hustling, you were out there reaching out to your networks asking everyone to vote. During the voting period, the weather was too cold for Tim and Emmaly Dennehy to have their wood-fired pizza truck set up, so they spent those three cold days in Denver, handing out 2,500 flyers at the Colorado Avalanche game, at a home and garden show at the Colorado Convention Center and at Arapahoe Community College. The Dennehy’s also got two busy Denver restaurants to agree to place the flyers on
their tables, they convinced KYGO radio to give Cañon City a shout out, and Tim called in during a talk show on KOA radio and got his whole spiel in. “It goes back to doing what you can for your community,” he said. “We are blessed with our food truck and when it was too cold to work, we said let’s work for the community.” As one of the top six finalists in the SBR contest, Deluxe Corp. will host a marketing seminar May 20 at the Abbey Events Center.
